Good morning! Happy Sunday! I'm @cattycats - DC dancer, co-founder of dance company @agoradance, and Truxton Circle resident! I live on the once infamous street Hanover Place. According to a former policeman who works in bakery nearby it was an open air drug market, then the gays moved in, then the artists and now we're getting million dollar condos on one side of the street, and a hotel on the other. DC is LOVE. I am happy + grateful to be here among DC's amazing + supportive creative community. I don't consider myself as being "from" DC but this place is in my roots. My dad's parents both grew up in the city- my grandma by Eastern Market and my grandpa on U Street. They'll tell you things like before Ben's Chili Bowl was there, that space was an ice cream shop and my grandmother would go there with her mother when she was a kid after getting their hair done. My mom's family transplanted to the DC area from Pakistan living just over the city line. Just about every one of my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins works in the federal government building satellites and military planes, analyzing data for agencies like NOAA and NIH. DC is not a swamp town. It's where we live, where we breathe, where we LOVE. To me, the diversity and culture of DC truly represents the American Dream. It's where people from all over the world have come to make new lives and meet people that look nothing like them but share the same goals.
