todd is almost always extremely soft, but i headcanon that he’s soft except for during times when people he cares for are distressed. not that i condone violence or anything, but mr. perry best be glad he and todd weren’t in much proximity to one another after neil’s death

one of the reasons i love dead poets society is because all the characters are so multilayered and relatable. we've all felt anxious and awkward and like everything inside us is 'worthless and embarrasing', and we all have decisions we regret, but we also have moments where we’re confident doing what we love and wanting to carpe diem. dps just feels so real to me :’)

first on the list !! @desire-mona (they/them). mona is everything and I love them. makes the absolute best posts ever and is just so fucking funny. you will see rsl posts very frequently. also posts about house md frequently. one of the best mutuals ever !! their tags under stuff they reblog are the best okay, they're either agreeing with you or it's something like "hey. *leans up against my anxiety diagnosis*" that's an actual tag I've gotten from one of their reblogs btw.

and now @i-am-in-love-with-todd-anderson (she/her). ania is one of the sweetest people ever and is so supportive. also very smart !! her analysis posts over the movie make so much sense and are mostly things I would've never thought of but still make so much sense. (those posts are either so depressing or are just a nice little experience.) also, she's like in love with Meeks. do I need to say any more.

@cimacally (I don't know pronouns, sorry). is also pretty new to the fandom ! comes on every once on a while to post the most accurate headcanons you will ever read in your entire life, reblog a thing or two, goes away (?), and then repeats. blog is still definitely worth checking out !!

I love Todd's arc and his character. It can be extremely difficult for some to find their voice and believe that said voice is worth sharing.

It also seems as though Todd grew up in his brother's shadow. Being told by his parents and teachers, it's not Todd's voice they want. They wants Jeff's. This would only add to the difficulty of speaking up, especially for himself.

Then came Neil, Mr. Keating, and the dead poets.

One thing I always appreciated with this film is that Todd doesn't have this one moment of breaking out of his shell and then he's suddenly confident and outspoken.

It's takes time and support. Neil and Mr. Keating are frequently coaxing Todd out of his shell.

For example the scene of Neil convincing Todd to go to the dps meeting, the "No" scene in the dorm between Todd and Neil, Neil getting Todd to yell the lines at the dock, Mr. Keating clocked Todd and inner thoughts and feelings immediately and actively showed how much he believed in Todd, they both challenged Todd more than once.

Then the dead poets society is a group of people who are all incredibly supportive of one another. They are friends who root for you , they celebrate your wins, they sit with you and listen when it gets bad. For Todd specifically I think this helped a lot with making him feel comfortable and willing to slowly open up to them. Their reaction to Todd's poem he makes up on the spot and in a deleted scene Todd reads aloud an original poem for the poets and I loved to see their reaction when it's finished. They are all so supportive and clearly proud of Todd, standing and cheering for him.

All this to say I love to see how this slowly builds throughout the film.

Rehearsing - Todd Anderson / Neil Perry

Description: It's raining, Todd is almost falling asleep, and Neil is reading his lines for his next play for the millionth time. [Fluff, 600 words]

It's canon that Todd helps Neil with practicing for his plays, so I wanted to write one these times in a warm/soft vibe. Wrote this one purely for comfort. Might write more fics like this. Just small moments of their lifes y'know. Feel free to make requests if you have any idea. Anyway, hope you enjoy it <3

Neil was rehearsing lines for his next play, again.

Todd could swear he knew all those lines back and forth by now. He didn't complain though, it was always nice to help with rehearsing. There was something special in seeing Neil this genuinely happy and excited with something. His happiness was contagious in a way.

"Parting is such a sweet sorrow..." He stamped his feet on the floor as he read the lines, something he always did whenever he was too excited or anxious.

"...that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow" Todd completed in his head, without saying anything. Sometimes, he would help by saying another's character's lines, so Neil could practice dialogues how they are. But for the most part, his "helping" was pretty much just keeping him company, listening to the lines and correcting him if needed.

If it wasn't raining, they would've done this outside. Next to the lake, probably. It's where they usually go. Not that it was all that bad staying inside for once. Todd was tired and their room could be small, but it could also be very cozy. The sound of the rain, slightly muffled by the window, just added to the feeling.

The clock showed 11:02. "It's not that late" Todd thought as he yawned, "There's still time to rehearse this scene at least five more times".

Outside it was already very dark, and the rain made it even harder to see anything. Todd watched as the drops of water on the window fell. Hugging his knees and leaned against the wall as he listened to Romeo and Juliet attentively, as if he hadn't already millions of times.

"Todd?"

"Hm?" He looked at his friend. His eyes obviously sleepy, while Neil's were wide awake.

"We can do this tomorrow if you're too tired," He suggested.

"No, there's no need to"

"You look like you'll fall asleep any second now" That was probably true. "I'm sure I can manage on my own"

"I know you can," Todd laid down, keeping his eyes open. He wasn't quite sure why he cared so much. He could simply go to sleep and let Neil keep practicing on his own, but for some reason he wanted to be awake with him. Everything felt so nice to just sleep it through.

Neil looked at him for a few moments, then got up from the desk he was sitting at. "Move over"

Todd sat up with a groan, giving space for Neil to sit next to him. After that, Neil lightly pulled him down, so Todd's head was laying on his lap.

"Hm?" His tone could be interpreted as either confusion or exhaustion. Or both of them.

"Sleep. I'll keep rehearsing" Neil said softly. And he did go back to what he was doing, repeating the lines quieter this time.

Todd took a few moments to process what he said and how comfortable he was. He let out a content sigh as he gave in to the tiredness.

He took one last glance at the actor close to him before closing his eyes. Neil's smile was so bright and Todd couldn't help but smile too as he tried to focus on Romeo and Juliet coming from the sweetest voice he had ever heard. The warm atmosphere making him even more comfortable and everything simply felt a bit better.

And as Neil's hands gently stroked his hair, soothing him, Todd started to fall asleep.

Dead Poets Society and what their favorite 80s movies would be

including my reasons for why :))

Neil Perry / Indiana Jones

Neil would watch this movie and all he would take away from it was another cool teacher that not only knows his shit but goes on awesome adventures and he’d dream of being him

Todd Anderson / Gremlins

Todd would not only relate to the uniqueness of the main character but he too would also be the only person capable of befriending a random animal while also unintentionally starting a rabid attack against his town

Charlie Dalton / Roadhouse

Charlie would WORSHIP Patrick Swayze, literally kiss the ground he walked on. Not only that but he would adore his tough and take no shit personality and dream of getting to hit people and not get in trouble for it

Knox Overstreet / Can’t Buy Me Love

Knox ever the romantic would look at poor dorky Ronald who is falling over his feet to help a girl he barely knows and relate to the character completely. He doesn’t care if it’s a chick flick, he watches it any chance he gets

Steven Meeks / Weird Science

a movie about two super smart guys scientifically creating their dream women from a barbie doll. He’d grab Pitts and go ‘when do we start?’ (side note a Meeks and Pitts Weird Science AU, obsessed already)

Richard Cameron / Top Gun

You cannot convince me otherwise that Cameron would be a war buff. History through and through and respect to any form of service a man can do. He would watch Top Gun and wish that was him. He would also partake in war reenactments but that’s a whole other story.

Gerard Pitts / Footloose

This man wants to dance and Ren Mccormick would be his idol. Pitts also dreams of being the sole hero to bring music and dance back to his small town and bagging the prettiest girl in school.

Meeks would be the kind of person to play sims city and create his own city.

While Todd would play stardew valley.

Neil plays animal crossings.

Charlie plays music rhythm games or guitar hero.

Pitts would play sims, I get the feeling he would make his friends in sims and make anderperry a couple with a cat.

Cameron would play solitaire

Knox would play dating simulators.
