So this piece is the “Pemaquid at Noon” and it is a 12 x 20. I like that shape canvas because it allows a little bit more of the composition fitting with the broad spaces that the sea provides. I’d actually like to do a very large pieces with the ocean vista. But one has to have a client first so I’m working on it. So yesterday I painted out on Pemaquid Point LIVE with the Plein Air Painters of Maine. I was a little late because I had a zoom meeting in the morning. I did a live session and painted a piece that resulted. They won’t let me post it to the IGTV but I’ll post it later today on my website. I shortened it down to 28 mins 🤷‍♀️ I often say that painting is like meditation you look at the surface then you look deeper than you look deeper then you look deeper and you get a greater understanding as you go. And not everybody is at the same level and that’s OK. It’s also a metaphor for life in general. First you look at the big picture and you can see all of the ocean and all of the sky and the rocks and then you break it down into smaller and smaller parts. Color and line and the composition and the way you want to focus your attention. And then you start working on the niggly details which would be like the tasks you would probably have in your day-to-day life but if you concentrate solely on the little niggly details you miss the big picture. Notes on the day: The parking lot was completely full, people were having picnic lunches and sitting on the rocks and watching the ocean. I slipped in between a couple of other artists who were already painting on the rocks. I didn’t interrupt them. It was a beautiful day as you can see and perfect weather couldn’t have asked for better. Light breeze and Cool air and yet warm enough that I didn’t have to wear my jacket. A lot of people milling around. I will put up this piece on Pemaquid at Noon when is finished and put it in the AR viewer on my site. Spring is really charging full speed ahead. The cold has slowed down the garden but my #blackparrottulips which were eaten down to the stubs last year all popped this week without a warning. As some of you know I started this piece 2 years ago and but last year I had a setback because of a critter (as yet to be apprehended) ate them right down to the ground. So what I did this year was I covered it up with netting and that worked and I’ve had loads of blossoms to work with. Some of you may have followed the story that I had posted on Thursday etc showing my progress as it developed and today I think I’m finished. I have to let it sit and look at in a few days. I am pressed because I have a lot of little pieces that I want to do & finish and also and the #irises, and #peonies are getting ready to pop and then the #Siberianiris and then the #Japaneseiris and then who knows what else I forgotten because I’ve planted a lot of things in my #paintersgarden #garden. So yesterday I went out painting with the #Pleinairpainters of Maine and they were all in Cozy Harbor on the deck by the restaurant and I chose to look back towards them from another location where there was an old shack. And then I got started on the painting and was told I should move my car and I thought well might as well move. So I went for a little tour around the end of the point Newagan point. Just a short jaunt, the peninsula was so long… 45 mins down from rte 1. Anyway the painting I started I decided I’d just finish up at the studio and I’ll post it when I’m done. So yesterday I was rained out (as you surmised ) for the plein air painters group that was meeting up in Southport. However they rescheduled it for the 12th so next Wednesday I’ll be trucking over there see how that goes. I will try to do a live session if I can get connected if not I’ll just videotape it and pop it up. This week along with finishing the little paintings I’m working on the studio. In the meantime, I’ve pulled out this segment around Long Cove which I’ve been mulling over as a next stop around Muscongus Bay. Looking for that perfect setting for islands and boats. Trying again…. So I’m working on a set of small pieces from #NewHarbor . I just love the light on these little houses and trees in the background. The color and the sculptural quality of the light as it wraps around the trees and hillsides is made for the artist. Starting a 2nd one and finishing up. Also a dawn scene from #Pemaquidharbor. Excuse my mind like a sieve moment. Studio/Gallery Opening May21st…. - Tomorrow if it doesn’t rain I’m going out to painting with the #PAPME (plein air painters of Maine) in Southport. In this next “Touring Maine with art” I want to make some observations about light and its relationship to the sea. This time is dawn light. I put together some examples of what I look for with dawn lighting. - In this first set of photos that I took at Dawn at Pemaquid you can see that the changes in the coloration of the light in the sky doesn’t necessarily go the way you think it will. The whole sequence was about four minutes long I just selected some to illustrate. - One of the great things about dawn light is it low angle to the sea so it adds drama to the waves which catch light. - The clouds can also catch the light but it’s a fleeting thing. - And finally one last thing to think about is if you’re looking into the light versus if you’re looking away from the light at the same time of day, same location you can get dramatically different results. Next time I’ll try backlighting. - There are lots of different terms that I use in referring to light. Light is a fairly big topic so this is just one segment of light. So I took a little tour around to see where I might do an evening scene but I think it’s still pretty cold or chilly when the breeze comes through in the evening. So I haven’t found exactly what I want yet in a protected spot. Docks are still beached. Also I just found out I’m getting my vaccine on Wednesday Yeah 😁 and Thursday is supposed to rain so I’m going out on Tuesday 6:15-ish pm eastern time if the weather holds. So today it’s raining but I put in a few more rocks, leveled up ( I think) the horizon line and finished up the dawn scene I did yesterday. I realized that plein air painting is a little (just a tad) dependent on the weather and that most of you don’t literally get up at the crack of dawn. So the next one I’m going to do will be a dusk scene. A little more viewer friendly. I will try and make the timing work for you although I can’t do anything about wind wave or weather (www). Doing seascapes live is always going to be tricky and I will be exploring the location over the weekend. I’m going to set it up so that you join me in the middle again since preliminary work is just that and IG is only 1 hour long. And I’m going to just turn it on and let it rip and see how it goes again. Sunsets about 7 pm Eastern by next Wednesday or Thursday. So I’ll probably be set up 1-2 hours earlier and turn it on about 6:15 ish. Like I said Plein air painting you can’t be too regular about because it just doesn’t work well on a schedule. So you just have to keep your eyes peeled I’ll try to remind everybody earlier in the day as to my estimated time and plans. At any rate the Dawn Scene is “Muscongus at Dawn”, 12x32 oil on linen. I went out today to see my site at the approximate time that I wanted to paint it. I picked out a site on Muscongus bay with a couple of islands and an oblique angle to the light so that I would have a little more time to paint the morning light scene. It’s amazing how different the weather is this week from last. So I will video tape the session. I probably won’t talk much while I’m painting because I’m right in amongst somebody’s home and I don’t wanna wake them up at 4 AM. So situation normal. Having trouble posting the IG TV and/or much of anything so let’s see if this works. At any rate I did a video of all the different ways to look at the beach on my big screen page. And put it to music the password is Moonset. This morning was bitter cold and still breezy At pre-dawn I figured it would be too bitter at 18 degrees and -3 windchill and no ability to set up an easel in the lee of land makes it pretty cool, even though the scene was perfect and the tide was right. On the other extreme is the beauty. So I thought I would do an abbreviated look at how I decided what to paint on my Live this morning. 6 mins long. What I choose has a lot to do with light and atmosphere. I let the scene captivate me. As I am looking about I’m waiting for an emotional trigger in color and light. Then look for contrasts and form. If A scene has all four of those areas covered I know the painting will be a winner. At any rate I put together a video on my site with all the different views I saw this morning along with some music that fit the setting. On Wednesday March 3rd for Live I will be on Pemaquid Beach. Brrrr . I will try to connect via Satellite??? I wasn’t sure if my test worked uploading on the beach so ..... I have a treat in store 🤞 either way. So here’s the thing at noon the tide rises to full tide at noon. And would be rising the whole time I’m there which could make things interesting. The sea is always sneaky that way. So I’m going to attempt something a little different.
