I know there a lot of things I would’ve liked to have seen on screen. But one I would put on there is Delly calling out Peeta anytime he’s rude to Katniss.
Delly to Peeta:
Tumblr media
It’s also just a good parallel to Haymitch telling Katniss to try and be nice to Peeta.
Like Delly and Haymitch were fighting for their lives to save Everlark. Ultimate shippers

Note
Character design for Madge Undersee and Delly Cartwright? Thank you.
Thank you, anon for the prompt!
I put them in their reaping outfits. Madge's is described in the books but there was nothing about Delly in THG so I had to improvise.
Tumblr media
I hope you like how they turned out.

Valentine's Tree
Summary: Valentine's is approaching and everyone is excited about hanging a valentine for their sweetheart on the Valentine's Tree. Katniss doubts she's going to receive one - since she hasn't had one since her father died. Canon Compliant - set five years after the ending but before the epilogue in Mockingjay
Rated M: Katniss is Jealous when she learns Peeta received Valentine. Peeta is so Romantic. Romance. Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Delly Cartwright, Haymitch Abernathy, - Thanks to @theforgottenweasley for betaing the story-
Tumblr media
The first year Katniss didn't get a Valentine on the Valentine tree was the year her father died. The Valentine's Tree was located near the town, it was where all of the sweethearts hung up their Valentines. No one remembers when the tradition started. Or how it became a District Twelve tradition. All Katniss knew is that seeing the snow-clad tree strung up with hand spun cut out pink, red, and white hearts lifted the spirits of everyone in the district.
It was supposed to be done in secret, but for the established couples or parents leaving Valentines for their spouses or children, it was a sweet task.
Her father used to hang up Valentines for his gals. One for her mother, one for Prim, and one for Katniss. But because Katniss was pretty popular in school, she used to receive many Valentines from all of her classmates. Many of them liked Katniss for her voice, something she inherited from her father.
The year her father died was the year her light dimmed and she stopped singing. Katniss stopped living and started surviving. She had no time for such things, she told herself over and over again, but in her heart, Katniss wanted a Valentine. Every February 14th when she snuck to that tree to hang up Prim's Valentine, she would browse the tree looking for a small token but there wasn't any.
Then Prim was reaped. And Katniss properly forgot about the tree. She lived with a terror more pressing than hunger. Survival became an art form, she had the weight of the world on her shoulders, and the tree sat empty for the first time in memory. When the bombs came, the tree caught fire and was destroyed much like District Twelve.
That was five years ago.
Katniss couldn't believe how time had flown by. After the war, as she and Peeta healed, they grew closer. A week ago they quietly had a Toasting. Haymitch was present and so was Effie. Though, Effie refused to stay with Haymitch and his geese. Thom, District Twelve's Mayor, filled out their paperwork and sent it to the Capitol, requesting to keep their marriage out of the public eye. There was a great interest in the lives of Katniss and Peeta, and it was important to their mental health and safety to keep their lives out of the media.
Since they Toasted, nothing much changed. Peeta still baked in his bakery. Katniss still hunted. They still lived in the Victors Village, though they often switched homes, whose ever house they were in at nightfall was where they slept.
Tonight they were in her home. Peeta was exhausted after working at the bakery and found her making stew. Katniss embraced him as soon as he stepped through the door and had a steaming cup of tea waiting for him. Life was short, and the war had taught her to appreciate the small moments and not just the grandiose spots.
Later that night she was right where she wanted to be, wrapped in his arms. The fireplace was lit and she was dozing off when she heard Peeta say. "You know, they're thinking of bringing back the Valentine's Tree."
"Hmmm," she hummed. Katniss snuggled into his chest, his scent was warm and delicious, much like the savory cheese-buns she had with her tomato soup tonight.
"Delly thinks it will be a nice way to bring back something to the district. She was going to bring it up to Thom."
Katniss nodded, half asleep.
"I remember my first Valentine that wasn't from Delly."
This brings her fully awake.
"Say what?"

wow the movies really did exclude every female peer Katniss was close with in the books, didn’t they?
like I talk about Madge a lot and obviously she’s the most important example, but Delly wasn’t there either. neither was Lavinia. that makes me so sad. Johanna was there, but their friendship wasn’t really elaborated on much in the movies, either.
now obviously she had Prim and she bonded with Mags, Wiress, and Rue before they died, as well as becoming closer with her mother, but they’re not her peers. (Hazelle isn’t Katniss’s peer either, but I wish she’d been in the movies, too. their relationship is so special to me.)
Katniss’s friendships/connections with her female peers (and other female characters in general) are so much more… profound than her relationships with male characters, or at least in my opinion. she describes female characters and her relationships with them so differently than she does male characters and her relationships with them. she values all of her relationships with other girls and women so highly. with Madge specifically (and maybe Lavinia, too), her admiration borders on sapphic.
but nooooooo apparently the love triangle was more important.

checking in to say I’m such a sucker for Katniss and Peeta discussing their mommy issues once they’re together again. I once saw a post pointing out that they’re the only ones in the series with that kind of trauma and it made so much sense to me why they easily bonded with each other. Just imagine them finally being able to discuss how unsafe they felt even before the games and realize that they have someone in their family who understands that problem and doesn’t make it feel that way. Katniss and Peeta have always been tender with each other but I fear it only gets worse the more they share and get close
we joke a lot about how THG is what Katniss would write about her experiences in the games and war. (Explaining her, frankly, INSANE odes to Peeta's eyelashes.) but also? we're sleeping on the idea that Katniss writes a book absolutely trashing Peeta's mom. It's gonna be a fucking BESTSELLER. I actually have an advanced reader copy, here, lemme show you:
Tumblr media
(Note, i spent like 4 hours making this absolutely garbage fucking cover, please validate me. My feelings gland needs this.) I also have this idea that while Katniss does come to understand her mother better by the end of the book - a relationship, a GOOD relationship, with the two of them - it's just going to take time. In that time, maybe Peeta helps to bridge the gap. He does weekly check-ins with Katniss' mom. Telling her how Katniss is doing but also answering her questions about how HE'S doing. And he realizes how...nice it is for a mom to want to know how his day was or be proud of his accomplishments. It's not a replacement for what he should have had, but it's nicer than what he ever got. His relationship with his family is gone. That's it. There will never be any hope of it ever getting better. But Katniss DOES have her mom and he wants to help them. And, from the conversations and tears they've shared about this, he knows she wants it too. So he starts by suggesting that Katniss' mom go through her own therapy to be able to come to terms with her grief and the consequences of what that grief did to her relationships with her living family. He puts her in touch with Dr. Aurelius who gives him a referral to someone in 4 that works in grief and family counseling. And it's not easy. Not by any means. Not for anyone. But in time, years, decades - the bonds of family are strengthened. They're never perfect, you can't fix the past, of course. But the pains are acknowledged on both sides. Their new relationship is hard-earned and exactly what they both need of each other. 15 years down the line, Mrs. Everdeen gets to push the hair out of her daughters eyes while she delivers her first grandbaby. She gets to watch her baby look in awe, and wonderment at her own baby. She gets to watch her family grow a little bigger and a little stronger. Later, when Peeta makes sure both Katniss and baby are safe and sleeping, he goes over to Mrs. Everdeen and hugs her tightly. "Thanks for being here for us, Ma."

I am behind, unfortunately! We've had non stop family situations from Thanksgiving until now, with rotating players, with everything involving surgeries, new diabetic equipment (T1D), training sessions, and unfortunately worse. I posted this several weeks back on my Patreon, and will be posting the high res color version soon for supporters. The new chapter is coming soon (but I'm afraid to jinx it. The next TWO are almost done in fact, due to a change in the winds...)
As always, mom life is neither simple nor straight, and the amount of pivoting derails and delays.
I do hope all of you are enjoying what I am getting out~

Hunger Games characters and my interpretation of their Enneagram type (explained by Sleeping at Last's Enneagram songs)
Sejanus-"One" I, I want to sing a song worth singing / I'll write an anthem worth repeating
Peeta-"Two" I just want to love you, to love you, to love you well / I just want to learn how, somehow, to be loved myself
Finnick-"Three" It's so exhausting on this silver screen / Where I play the role of anyone but me
Lucy Gray-"Four" Flashlight in hand, determined to find / Authenticity only poetry could even begin / To try to describe
Beetee-"Five" I want to watch the universe expand / I want to break it into pieces small enough to understand / And put it all back together again
Katniss-"Six" I want to take shelter, but I'm ready, ready to fight / Somewhere in the middle, I feel a little paralyzed
Haymitch-"Six" Is it courage or faith / To show up every day?
Delly-"Seven" I'll find the silver lining / No matter what the price
Gale-"Eight" I was just a kid who grew up strong enough / To pick this armor up / And suddenly it fit
Johanna-"Eight" Now you won't see all that I have to lose / And all I've lost in the fight to protect it
Prim-"Nine" It looks like empathy / To understand all sides / But I’m just trying to find myself / Through someone else’s eyes.
Snow-"One" but he doesn't get Sleeping at Last he doesn't deserve it.

Peeta Mellark: *discussing his plan with Delly on asking Katniss out*
Delly Cartwright: I think that’s a great plan-
Peeta Mellark: *sees Katniss coming over* She’s coming, just don’t say anything.
Katniss Everdeen: What up, dorks. Excited about the science trip?
Peeta Mellark: Hey, uh, yeah. We’re just talking about the trip.
Delly Cartwright: Yeah, and Peeta’s plan.
Katniss Everdeen: You have a plan?
Peeta Mellark: I-I don’t have a plan.
Delly Cartwright: Yeah, he’s just going to collect tiny spoons while we travel to other districts. *winks at Peeta*
Katniss Everdeen: Like-like a grandmother?

So I know in the age of the Hunger Games renaissance we have a lot of post-war Katniss and Peeta parenting headcanons however, I’d like to take a moment to talk about their FRIENDSHIPS post war new and old because I love them and they deserve the best support systems.
- One of Greasy Sae’s grandchildren, a scrawny dark-haired man, who asks to be apprenticed in Peeta’s bakery since the coal mines are no longer safe to work in. A quiet man, with a lot of love in his heart for iced cakes, since his daughter likes to look at them in wonder through the glass.
- Johanna Mason and Katniss having four-hour long phone calls AT LEAST once a week.
- a poorer capitol couple who always dreamed of life in a smaller town end up buying one of Victor’s Houses. They’re nervous to say the least, but Peeta helps them settle in the town and Katniss eventually helps them to get comfortable in the woods. When their dog has puppies, the couple gifts them two.
- Gale never returns to District 12, but his siblings, Rory and Posy do. A friendship that’s sparked by reminiscing about cold mornings is now fueled by hot summer evenings, and bonfires, and roasted apples and singing.
- Peeta and Katniss visiting Annie in District three and swimming at the beach with her.
- Delly Cartwright rushing to the bakery to relay the gossip she just happened to hear at the post office.
- Haymitch’s house not being in a fit state, so Katniss and Peeta helping him to host his Senior Veterans’s support group at theirs.
- Speaking of veterans, Katniss’s mother visiting with one, a second-hand ring on her finger. He’s from District 11, a towering battle-scarred soldier but his eyes betray the people he’s lost in his time. His gravelly speaking voice would scare away even the tamest birds, but his hands coax rainbows out of the ground and Katniss is proud of her mother for being happy.
Now, I don’t think Katniss would ever get a full time job, with her mental health and Capitol stipend. I also don’t think she would become a doctor or apothecary, like her mother and sister. But in her late years, when she’s too old for hunting and no need for it anyway, I like to imagine she becomes a midwife. Idk, I think she would have a lovely no-nonsense bedside manner and a deep love for every baby she helps deliver and it is nice to think about. I just weep imagining her helping to deliver Posy’s first baby, or checking up on Newborn mothers around the town with gift baskets full of helping herbs and freshly-baked buns and being a familiar face for everyone in 12.

Nicola Coughlan as Delly Cartwright
Tumblr media
In my head Katniss described Delly as kind of like Nicola...circa the Derry Girls.
Sometimes I think people like Madge more because she is described as a beauty queen. And humans are hardwired to like someone who looks pretty.
Delly is the un-Madge.
The way Katniss dismissively describes her you see her as a pasty-faced girl with bad hair...(possibly round like me). I've seen a lot of people make her the bad guy, because of the way Katniss describes her.
But Delly with her frazzled yellow hair, went toe to toe with a highjacked Peeta, spouting all of Katniss's virtues. She was an official Everlark Shipper lol from the beginning.
