In 1987,  Guess?, Inc. commissioned Ken Griffiths to take the photographs for a limited edition book entitled The Panhandle, designed by Derek Birdsall RDI.

“I was photographing in Clarendon, Texas, when this truck parked in front of me. I was going to ask the driver to move but changed my mind when I saw this subject. The picture [Robbi and Son] led to me being commissioned for a book about the Texas Panhandle. I like it because it wasn’t planned and it sums up what I feel is important about photography: recording life as it really is.”  Ken Griffiths (quote from Photographers and their Images by Fi McGhee. find out about alan kitching and his work

alan kitching is an english letterpress typographic designer and printmaker born in 1940. he is known for his use of metal and wood letterforms. kitching was an apprentice compositor from 1956-1961 then from 1962-64 was a technician in hand and line type composition at the watford college of technology. kitching began his own designing career in 1973 in london, in 1977 he partnered with martin lee and derek birdsall at omnific, and he then began his letterprinting work there in 1985. he has had solo workshops in london and barcelona, and previously pasadena, california, and the ditchling museum of art+craft. he has had clients from the british library to dazed & confused to penguin books and even clarks shoes.

I can't help thinking that books and now perhaps websites — information — are really the proper stuff of design. All the rest is playtime. It is real text that real people have spent half their life trying to get right.
