It’s really not that hard to understand how Destiel is canon despite not having Dean verbally textually concretely saying “I love you” back, which is what most people who only consume media on a surface level understand.

You have a jigsaw puzzle. Let’s say there’s 327 pieces. One by one you put it together with some bright spots where you get a bunch of them in a row and some more complicated spots where it took you longer than you wanted and the picture made it difficult to match up the pieces.

After awhile, you get 326 of them in, even tho your dog almost ate the 326th piece and it’s a little chewed up but whatever. It’s passable.

But, you realize you can’t find that 327th piece. It’s somewhere — it’s gotta be somewhere. You can see the hole where it belongs. You see it’s shape in it’s empty space, you see how many curves it has and how many sticky-out bits it has to connect perfectly with the rest of the puzzle.

However that final piece is still missing.

You look up and down, come up with theories about where it could possibly be (did the dog eat it? Did the manufacturers just screw up and there was a glitch in processing? Was it your own fault you lost it and it’s somewhere super obvious?).

But despite you being unable to find it, you’ve stared at that empty space for so long it’s almost like it is already filled because the shape is so clearly outlined. It’s the final piece and even if it’s not there, the rest of the picture is, and, the empty space is so well defined that there is no QUESTION that’s where the missing piece should go.

So Destiel is canon because the rest of the puzzle was filled in through years and years of subtext, text, basic narrative structure, romantic tropes, queer coding, etc etc.

The one piece that’s still missing is Dean saying three words but you don’t know where that piece is, aka, we don’t know why he wasn’t allowed to say it back. But we know that’s what has to be said. There won’t be a refusal of reciprocation because if that was the case we would have gotten it when the show was airing because there’s no harm from executives perspectives in denying queer feelings. They’d probably prefer it.

Dean’s missing words is the one single puzzle piece that’s missing right now. And we are all still searching for it but that doesn’t mean that it’s clearly defined space isn’t already there outlining exactly what could only fit right. There.

i feel like there’s a false equivalency happening here? im not totally in support of censoring all the Bad Media to keep our child’s minds Pure, but i think there is a difference between something Glamorizing murder, because, well, most teens don’t have the capability to murder people, so even if they come away from american psycho thinking it would be super cool to be a serial killer theres enough incentives in the world to stop them from doing that.

but if you have a text that romanticizes abuse, in a way that a teen doesn’t even pick up that the relationship is unhealthy or abusive and just reads it as a romance, it can shape someone’s view on what’s acceptable in relationships, and a teen can end up yelling at their partner for not loving them enough since they won’t cancel their plans to hang out with them on a whim because they’ve internalized that true romance isolates you from everyone else and if you truly love someone then you will sacrifice anything for them, if that makes any sense

i dont think its the responsibliy of fanfiction (or for that matter regular fiction) to model healthy behaviours for young people above the age of like 6. this kind of didactic edifying view of fiction just produces christian rock. media exists within an actual material society and if someone reads toxic destiel fanfiction or wuthering heights or the great gatsby and decides its awesome to behave abusively to people then yknow perhaps the fault is within a larger culture including the countless adults who they are culturally expected to be relying on as role models innit.

Okay yeah I am really really tired of this. So I'm just going to say outright that what spn did with 15.18, with Cas's confession, that was a whole lot of people at spn showing their love and support. Writers, Jensen and Misha, the director, and anyone else who cared--which was a good number of people who worked at spn. It was the show full on validating fan lens and the deliberate crafted work of writers that had to queer code Destiel for years due to network censorship.

Crew members were in tears watching that Dean and Cas scene get filmed.

No, Cas's love for Dean wasn't last minute added.

No, it didn't come out of nowhere.

It was a 12 season arc payoff.

It was many seasons, who knows how many years, of writers weaving it into the text.

Who even knows when the deliberation to try to push it into text decision was made. I usually think Carver era, but then Ben Edlund said some things and...who knows.

No, spn was not gaslighting and mocking Destiel shippers.

The original plan for the finale at the time 15.18 was filmed had Cas be there for the ending. They made 15.18 in good faith believing they'd be able to follow through on Destiel, as much as they could get away with it.

15.18 was filmed in March 2020 and the pandemic production shutdown hit a few days into filming 15.19. Production shutdown gave some higher ups too much time to think, and too much of an opening and an excuse to strip back 15.20.

Without the network support the most spn could do on Destiel anway was thread the needle to get as much into the text as they could, even if they couldn't make it open. But they tried to make it anyway within those parameters. They deserve credit for that and they didn't know how 15.20 was going to be stripped back when they filmed 15.18.

So tired of seeing malice assigned to the effort of the creatives who did it. Who told that story within a restrictive system.

Cas's confession wasn't even queer coded. That was the moment it switched to loud and blatant. Misha even said he was astonished they were allowed to film it at all. Lack of network support and PR erasure set in afterwards.

No, it wasn't fanservice. It was integral to the plot!!!! The major giant stakes save the world endgame plot!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been doing this meta analysis thing for a long time now and one thing that I have always tried to make clear in meta analysis is that for it to be taken seriously you must keep your personal biases out of it. You must come at it as objective as possible.

Rant under the cut

Its not always easy to do when you are dealing with difficult topics, or shining unfavourable lights on characters you love, or coming to conclusions that you werent expecting (recent meta discussions about Morpheus in the Sandman comics would fall into these categories).

What meta analysis should never be used for is to back up ship wars or specifically to shame fandoms for liking certain characters. If the meta isnt providing valid evidence to support the interpretations, and instead has fallen into name calling and mockery of fandom, its no longer valid meta.

I got this ALL the time in SPN fandom. Destiel was a huge fandom but as meta writers we stuck with what we were given by the source material and interpreted it with valid evidence. We understood that multiple interpretations were possible but we made sure that whatever we were analysing made sense and had some source backing. This wasnt always the case because meta writers are not a monolith, but the bigger blogs who wrote meta frequently at least understood this and would not be stretching to support their own claims if canon didnt back it up. Now no one is perfect of course, but the point is, proper meta writers understand that where they make a claim or interpretation of the source material, they have to site examples and evidence to back up their claims and also take into consideration any evidence to the contrary.

The people who hated destiel and made that their entire personalities didnt do that so much. I read a lot of their meta out of curiosity and every time I was baffled by where they were getting their claims. 'Destiel is necrophilia" was a big one which canon disproved almost straight away in season 5. "Destiel is rape" was another because Cas was using Jimmy as a vessel and yet canon confirmed Jimmy died at the end of season 4. Cas' body was remade by God in season 5 and has remained his own ever since. These are just two of the ridiculous examples supposed "meta writers" among the destiel hater communities would come up with and still use today.

I find it extremely infuriating when I see character/ship hate loosely disguised as meta analysis. I can give people the benefit of the doubt a lot of the time, as fandoms are usually highly emotional spaces, but when there is zero canon evidence to support the claims, when connections are being made on the absolute thinnest of threads, and when far more obvious interpretations are being clearly ignored to support certain viewpoints in such a stunningly obvious case of confirmation bias I have to throw in the towel and stop taking said meta seriously.

One thing I have loved about Sandman fandom so far is the meta. It's such a rich text to analyse, and the show adds an entirely new level to it which makes it all the more enjoyable. I've made no secret of my support for Dreamling and I wrote a very long meta series on Dreamling and how the show in particular uses certain tropes, symbolism, visual storytelling cues, and music, to name a few, to overload a 25 minute sequence with queer coding. It is completely understandable to me why anyone going into the show even without thinking about shipping, would feel like Dreamling hit them like a brick to the face. The creators weren't subtle with it.

Its also totally valid to find romantic interpretations of other pairings within the Sandman. I personally think Morpheus x Johanna was laid on pretty thickly. Morpheus x Lucienne is equally an interesting ship to analyse. But heres the thing, if you ship these other ships and are frustrated that Dreamling has "taken over" thats valid. I get it. I would like more focus on the other characters too. I would particularly like to talk about Lucienne x Gault and have a meta piece in progress about them.

Whats not okay however is for other shippers and people frustrated with Dreamling to go the way of the Destiel antis. Dont make shit up that has no basis in canon just because you need some moral high ground to shit all over the ship you hate. Don't call fans that see Dreamling "deluded" for seeing it. They aren't deluded. It's right there in the subtext. Dont resort to name calling and "gotchas" and use inflammatory language to bait people. And please, I'm begging you, stop claiming that people who ship Dreamling are somehow all overly fragile white racists. You're wrong.

The racism discussions about Hob's past have their place, but these things ARE being discussed, if anything I feel this fandom has done a far better job of handling the issues of slavery than another popular fandom has (looking at you OFMD). No one is forgiving Hob for his slaver past. But you have to acknowledge that the entire point of the story in The Sandman is about change, and growth, and how we can become better people. As another excellent short meta post stated recently "we are more than the sum of our transgressions". The Sandman is all about the shades of grey. No one is morally righteous, but most characters are not completely morally bankrupt either.

Hob Gadling is a controversial character who is often misunderstood by fandom but anyone with proper critical thinking skills and a decent understanding of what meta analysis is, should understand that Hob is a metaphor for humanity first and foremost. He is the average everyman from the perspective of an Englishman and therefore above all else to understand Hob you have to look to England, to Englands history, and to its current status in the world. A lot of blood on its hands yes, but also at least a century of trying to make up for it, a leader in the world in human rights and trying to do better. I have to believe that about this country, so I believe it about Hob too. Whilst I'm not interesting in getting into huge geopolitical debates about England, I hope that we can all agree that the average Englishman today is not a blood thirsty evil slaver/rapist/murderer or whatever else ive seen people accuse Hob of being even in his modern era.

We can argue the faults of the show downplaying slavery for sure. Its a valid criticsm. We can argue that not enough time was given in the show to show that Hob had changed and regretted his former actions. We can critique these things based on what the show has and has not told us, and also pepper in information provided in the comics and what we know about future Hob panels as well.

But when it comes to the blank spaces in between frames, in between cut screens, we can do whatever we like. Because that is where meta analysis ends and fanfiction begins. You wanna write about Hob joining the abolitionist movement and fighting hard to end slavery? You can. You wanna write about him ignoring Dreams advice and continuing to be a brutal slaver right up until slavery was ended in England sure, you go for it. But don't call either of these "headcanons" meta analysis.

Dont use meta analysis as a cover to shit on fandom. The minute you resort to name calling and mockery its no longer meta. No matter how frustrated or upset you are with the current fandom situation. There is always space to criticise fandom. But ask yourself what your end goal is here? What are you trying to achieve? Is it truly because you are on a righteous path to end fandom racism? Or do you just really hate a popular ship and want people to stop shipping it? If it's the former, then focus on that, ask what solutions we can put in place? Where we can truly tackle it on a larger scale, raising awareness of things that people may not realise are racist but are common tropes in fandom (like how making female characters all mothers or sassy gay best friends is misogynistic or how certain stereotypes in fantasy creatures are anti semitic) but if its the latter, then its disingenuous to use racism in fandom as a shield to hide your ship hate. It reduces an important topic to something shallow and irrelevant.

In ending this rant I will just say this. I'm not interested in engaging further on this topic. I'm legit gonna start blocking if anyone attempts to twist my words here. The civil discussions on this matter ended when people started name calling and flinging around accusations without basis. I am more than happy to engage separately in ways to improve fandom spaces for poc, because thats important, but ship hating has no place in that discussion. Drop that aspect, and there'll be less resistance in these topics.

Hellers can claim that they've been queerbaited as much as they want, the fact is that it is their fault for continously listening to someone like Mooch even after the 'straight-coming-out' fiasco. It is obvious what this guy's aim was/is. He is attention and money seeking from a rather rabid fan group who can fill his needs.

Hellers also have absolutely no right to accuse the show of queerbaiting. Despite self-proclaiming themselves as 'master readers of queer text and subtext and coding', Hellers do not even know how queercoding subtext or text even work.

Dean drinking cucumber water in one scene or the so-called ''bi lighting'' or wearing ''bi colored flannels'' are not queer-coding. It's literally making stuff up your ass and calling it a day and tapping yourselves on the back for supposedly realizing the 'obvious queercoding and subtext'. These are the guys who claimed Dean dancing with a lamp was a proof that he was imagining dancing with Castiel because Castiel was supposed to be the lamp in that scene, so it was queercoding and a nod to Destiel (yeah buddy sure....). These are the guys who legit claimed and pointed to Dean's FBI jacket (with the collar covering the 'F') as "proof" that he's bisexual.

That's straight up baiting themselves. They're still doing the same thing regarding the prequel, trying to find things that are not there, deluding themselves and thinking the show is baiting them. That's just insane.

Agree completely. They want queercoding to mean "calling literally everything Dean does queer means it's totes true". No. That's not what queercoding means or how subtext works.

In their heads, finding super sneakret signals to Dean's REAL sexuality in his every action shows how totally intentional and undeniable it is! It's literally impossible for Dean to be straight with all of this proof that shows up every single second he's onscreen! Except in reality, what it actually shows? Is how obsessed they are that they're insisting literally everything is a signal of queerness and how little they care about actual representation because it all magically only counts when it's Dean. What he eats, what he drinks, what he wears, what he stands next to, how he makes eye contact, who he talks to, etc.? There is nothing they haven't tried to turn into a hint towards proving bi!Dean and D/C.

That's not about what the writers intend, nor even any kind of genuine unconscious social cues about queerness. That's entirely about their personal myopic obsession with trying to force what they want to happen in a fictional show into reality by insisting everything is about their ship because they say so.

They weren't queerbaited by anyone but themselves and Misha, and as you say, even that is pretty much on them because subtle he is not. There was literally nothing the show could do that hellers wouldn't see as proof of what they wanted to see anyway. They ignored the million times it was reiterated by all the showrunners that SPN was the story of Sam & Dean. Singer and J2 explicitly said D/C wasn't part of the canon story. Dean's orientation was clarified several times in his own words. Even having Castiel and Dean spend less screen time together was turned into batshit "negative space" meta where we could supposedly see how in lurve they were by how Castiel's presence was missing from scenes!

It is genuinely an unhealthy, unhinged obsession of their own creation, nothing more and nothing less.

My phone is slowly processing my fandom shift. It still serves up SPN options for the tag field first, but once I start typing, it's starting to get accurate.

It no longer assumes I mean "Jimmy Novak" for as many letters, for example. Jimmy Novak is progressively falling lower in the list of options in the predictive text.

I was feeling weird about this, and then saw a post on my dash making the case for Jimmy Solidarity as fallen angel. Followed by some Team Rancher fanart.

You know, the ship between this "fallen angel" and his nether-coded tech dude.

It's more of a stretch to parallel Tango to Dean. There's nothing in canon to parallel the familial trauma (though i often see abandonment issues in fic). But Dean is the "just a mechanic" who repurposed a Walkman into an EMF meter. College AUs often have him going into engineering. And he both spent a lot of time in hell and was briefly a demon. Definitely has rage issues.

Team Rancher is, at least in some ways, MCYT Destiel.

ive been in all sorts of shipping fandoms from sterek to WangXian. And there are always a few persons who think the actors are secretly dating in real life or secretly lgbtq but the delusional hysteria in the destiel/cockles corner takes the cake. I just assumed that the majority of them are young and gullible but damn even back when I was 17 and shipping J2 I didn't actually BELIEVE they were together together. these idiots need to get off the internet for a year or two.

3 ingredients went into Destiel/Cockles' delusional hysteria:

The longevity of the show kept the hope up that this season will be the season their ship will become canon even right up to the finale (because bibros got their finale in 15x19)

During the show's record-breaking longevity Misha was feeding their hope that the ship can and will become canon

Kink shame over their fetish

It's the main reason why they can't stop crying over the finale two years later because they spend over a DECADE emotionally invested, not to mention the ungodly amount of money they spent that most of them couldn't afford to spend because they still need a "win" to show for all their DECADE worth of commitment.

Cockle ship happened because sane Destiel shippers knew they weren’t even getting Destiel subtext on the show (they don’t subscribe to “bi-color secret message bullshit) so they went after Cockles and trying to prove Jensen and Misha are friends/besties/lovers.  Because they noticed that non-shippers were siding with Wincest shippers because Jared and Jensen have a weird close friendship in real life.   That’s why they are so desperate to somehow prove Jensen/Misha’s friendship is real or even are secret lovers because then they can say they see Destiel because of their friendship/lovers, not because of the show that doesn’t give them text or subtext for their fetish ship.

From there Cockle tinhatters produced conspiracies like Catholic rabbits.  Here, let me show you how the Cockle tinhatters’ mind operates:

-For the one hour that Jensen was talking about Jared he was really talking about Misha because he looked down for 5 seconds and that is code for Misha because he has 5 letters in his name.

-Jensen uprooted and dragged his family halfway across the country to live less than a mile from Jared because he’s totally in love with Misha but instead he’s going to stalk Jared to cover up his feelings.

-Whenever Misha looks tired (which, to be honest is all the time), it means he’s missing Jensen.  When ever Misha strokes Jared’s hair (which, to be honest we all want to do), it means he’s thinking of Jensen.

So some people from the same lane that claims that platonic love is the only love that matters on SPN and platonic love is the highest love and the only love worthy of depiction and sibling love is the highest love there can be no other love also says things like Cas is “only” a brother to Dean, and Cas is “just a friend,” and therefore their bond isn’t any kind of a big deal. They’re downplaying to stick it to the shippers. It’s more proof that all their talk about the sanctity and value of platonic relationships is performance cover for their own actual fixation.

This hate crusade from the so-called “core fans” of SPN didn’t start in the modern era. It didn’t start in the age of queer coding or when Destiel started breaking through into text. It didn’t start in the twitter era or the tumblr era. It’s been burning since Dean and Cas started to become friends in S4, and the war expanded along with the developing story, the growth of social media, and new platforms.

Some stans have been around a very long time and are still waging the same hate war, some are new generations of stans in that interest set who rolled in and adopted the bad discourse, but it’s always the same denialism and hateful fandom script it’s been since S4 and only intensified in S5 and it got worse with each successive season, and it didn’t start with S4 and Cas’s introduction, this was a struggle in earlier seasons, but until Cas no one really stuck around long enough and deep enough to test the issue and that’s why Dean and Cas, and Destiel, are the flashpoint, but Cas’s arrival is not the invention of it either.

SPN is a show that has always been about love.

I started watching in 2005 when it first began and have written tons of SPN meta and rewatched and studied the episodes. It has always, always been about love.

In reflection I grow more horrified, not less, by how a very dominant loud component of its “core” base didn’t actually believe this story could be about love, it only believed in Sam and Dean bro bond supremacy and everything else can burn.

They call themselves fans and call themselves superior and brag about being “non shippers” or they ship what they ship but always funnel back to this same attack and denial on Dean and Cas’s relationship and in so doing burn down friendship love, found family love, brothers in arms, kindred spirits, and bury the fact that SPN has always shown the different way bonds and love forms.

Some of them deploy a certain amount of phobic rhetoric in service to this hate crusade, but that’s not the only thing happening. And it’s a chicken or the egg dilemma. Are they like this to rail against a queer ship because of phobic biases, or do they rail against a queer ship and pretend queer coding doesn’t exist and insult people who closely analyze the show because they’d be against anything that they perceive as a threat to Sam and Dean only love supremacy? Since Dean and Cas’s closeness, however it’s defined, gets attacked and denied in its essence.

Familial themes, found family, and love on SPN never actually mattered to them, only Sam and Dean ever did. If it’s not Sam and Dean, to them it’s not love. If it’s not Sam and Dean, to them it’s not family. They really really have epically missed the point.

And the brothers were the chief canvas to reflect on love, but the brothers were never, ever canonically the sole and only expression of and reflection and rumination on love.

It’s mostly just sad, honestly. How this story of two brothers and their family, and the people they love, just doesn’t matter to the supposed “core” the supposed backbone of the fandom, who brags how they made this fandom, and how they’re the only fans who “get” SPN, while they preach and preach about brotherly love, they have no respect for the actual story, the actual canon, or the show’s actual messaging.

Dean and Cas embody so many of spn’s strongest themes about love. There is no excuse to slam the door on the fingers of queer readings to virtue signal about “it’s about platonic love only”—that not only makes no sense for the show holistically, given romantic love has played a role plenty of times on SPN and has been treated as a love as any other love, it’s all love. Nobody has to ship anything, but not shipping something isn’t an excuse for this ongoing war against SPN’s canonical themes about love and it’s not “ruining” the show or “not getting SPN” to have a queer reading, but I’m not just annoyed by the queerphobic nonsense, it’s the attack on love generally.

How do people watch a show that is about love while acting like love should have no place there? The reason it doesn’t make sense is because they don’t, in fact, make any sense.

We don’t have loud open declarations in PR acknowledging mutual canon Destiel. What is there in loud open PR are statements affirming the importance of found family love and other kinds of relationships beyond the exclusivity of Sam and Dean and somehow, conveniently, this gets ignored so people can continue their lie about what spn is about, what spn is allegedly “only” about. Found family has always been under attack by these so called “fans.” Sometimes openly and often passive aggressively.

I don't blame people for loving the bro bond. I don't blame non-shippers. I don’t care which characters they like or dislike. That’s their business. Shipping, not shipping, that isn't the actual problem here, it's a whole lot more complicated than that.

Anyway. Dean and Cas love each other deeply. SPN and the SPN universe, any show set in that world, has always been about love.

two years!!

today marks two years since I made this account and I just had to make a post about it cause it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. the people I have met through this fandom have become a second family to me. i have gotten the chance to meet so many of them in person, and to the ones who I haven’t gotten to squish yet just know I can’t wait for the day that I get to! these people are my people. and I have a few words to say about em cause I’m feeling sappy.
