The raincode in my head has a similar pace to Ace Attorney or Persona 5, where you spend multiple days in-game on the case/labrinth and it has the teamwork aspect from Danganronpa where all the main characters contribute to more than just their special focus case
You get time to hang out with the main cast like confidants or free time events and the gumshoe gabs are saved for the train detectives.
There's mini cases you can do in between the main ones. There's even a quest that's available after chapter 3 where you can help Makoto pick out his mask- Yomi's unavailable and Makoto's like "I had a feeling you'd have good taste, Yuma •3"
We get to see Makoto's emergency announcement and he + Yuma reconciling (they hug.) And Vivia stays at the NDA to keep it running, keeping Yakou's legacy alive
Kurumi goes out to travel the world and try to return the book of death to Yuma, who. Yk. Actually says goodbye to his friends and leaves them a way to contact him. He doesn't just fuck off into the desert
You get to go to the bar with Yakou and he makes hints about his wife because I think he's sad when he's drunk. Even though he wanted to let loose
Kurumi trains at the NDA after everything and becomes a detective trainee, Vivia's helping to train her (she already knows most of it but formal training is still good)
You get to buy gifts for the main cast and give it to them
Want to gamble with Halara? Bam. Minigame. You can also gamble with Desuhiko as an easy mode (you make less money this way though)
Seth lives
The Peacekeepers have more relevance. Why are their roles so brief. Yomi is the only one with a good amount of screen time.
Speaking of Yomi in the epilogue there's a cutscene of him doing community service all grumbling. Maybe he's working in Dohya District and Martina is overseeing the work there. She feels very pleased. Yomi is not allowed to speak to her
Uhhh and more. That's the raincode in my head

hi rain code fandom. i finally finished cleaning up some months-old doodles about an au that has been living in my head rent free this whole time. i call it “boba au” off this image i made during the game (and also took months to finish). the concept is that they all get off the train and get boba, and then everyone joins the nocturnal detective agency and yuma gets TWO assist characters per case. many things change.
^ above: chapters 1-2
v below: minor spoilers for chapter 3, BIG spoilers for chapter 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now you understand why i have been going feral with this au sitting in my head for so long. yes there is more where this came from. this is just the beginning of boba au. be afraid
(also yes that is zilch alexander the real zilch alexander, with the world’s most expensive hat)

Chapter 4 Musing + Bonus thoughts in tags
I've been thinking about this recently and realized: Yakou did have a chance of surviving the gas but made the deliberate choice not to:
[Solution Key - Toxic Gas Properties]
Tumblr media
Yakou could have asked Desuhiko for a space suit; I don't even think the latter would question it either, this hammers more of the fact that the plan was a murder-suicide from the start. Though, this is the same man who takes dying over and over again in considering and still went through with it.
He really only needed Desuhiko's and Fubuki's fortes to enact the murder, but he brings Halara and Vivia to the lab as well. Yakou knows damn well the peacekeepers, especially Yomi will look for any excuse to arrest/execute the NDA. He brings Halara and Vivia to protect Fubuki, Desuhiko and Yuma; Yomi accuses the remaining NDA detectives for Yakou's 'murder' anyways. It was somewhat fruitless but the fact of the matter is to say even when lying to the others he did still care about them. Just as much as Yakou cared about the NDA the latter cared about Yakou just as much too. Yakou was really the heart of the NDA; Yakou just never took into account that everyone else would try desperately to save his life instead of just leaving him. (Going on a whim, to say he probably thought they'd just leave like how his former detectives left to join the peackeepers).
Yuma trying to beg Yomi to get Yakou medical attention, Fubuki using all her energy to rewind time in order save him, Halara administrating first aid after fighting the peackeepers, Desuhiko having to tell Fubuki to not to turn back time any further so the Chief can rest because it is too late and Vivia just standing there walking away since he doesn't know how to deal with it and express it directly. Hell, Halara was potentially giving CPR to his corpse in hopes that he'd stay alive after Yuma and Vivia checked Huesca's logs.
Finally, there's everyone's collective survivors guilt. It's safe to assume everyone knew what happened before Number One called in whether Yuma or Vivia said something; There's also Kurumi who wasn't even at the lab asking if they made a mistake by going.
In closing, it's a tragedy in every single way and I don't even think I hit everything in this musing; To me this is more focused on the NDA's perception of events
[I'd appreciate if people made responses to this by the way!!]

I really wish Desuhiko wasn’t written the way he was.
I feel ya. I spoke in an older post about how his characterization is based on a trope typically seen in anime, but it doesn't excuse his actions. After replaying chapter 2 and paying attention to his dialogue in other chapters, he really does feel like a better character when he's not the focal point. It honestly fits all the more into the irony of him wanting to be a big shot superstar, but he's relegated to being the comic relief. Really the only time he says perverted things is in chapter 2 and his DLC. In the other chapters, he's much more concerned with his fame than hitting on females, which bodes well for the enjoyment of his character. I've seen someone wish that instead of being perverted, he's too gentlemanly, acting overly nice while still being clingy, and I like that idea as well! The community can definitely shape him into an improved comedic character with the foundation we've been given.

So I drew fanart for @sobredunia vampire fic 'Finally, some good fucking food'! I love this au so much and wanted to draw something for it, even if it was small! Thank you @wackpedion for helping with the anatomy!
While this scene is not actually in the fic, I just wanted to draw something that potentially was in a future chapter (and because Kokobolt)! Just do not read if you haven't finished the game yet as it spoils everything!

One thing I really like about Rain Code is that there is no cohesion between any of the names. Yakou Furio is a regular Japanese name. Makoto Kagutsuchi? The first name is also a normal Japanese name, but the last name is the Shinto god of blacksmithing, which in any other game would be a clue to his mysterious backstory. Fubuki Clockford could easily be explained by her being biracial, with a Japanese mother who named her and an Anglo father whose surname she took, but in a similar vain you have Kurumi Wendy, two first names, one Japanese, one English, I don't think anyone has the surname 'Wendy'. Then you've got the first name/noun gang in Halara Nightmare, Desuhiko Thunderbolt, Vivia Twilight and Seth Burroughs. Yuma Fucking Kokohead. There's a scientist called Dr Huesca, which I'm 99% sure is just because it sounds like 'Wesker' and is a Resident Evil reference. No joke, at first I was waiting for the reveal that Yomi was Martina's father because I thought her name was a deliberate reference to the Electra Complex, but no, Kodaka just thought the name Martina Electro sounded cool I guess. I love him for that, honestly.

Rain Code Ship Week Day 7 - Free Day!
Sorry I took so long to finish this ship week. In really liked participating though and I hope it goes better the next time! Anyway this piece is heavily inspired by the bath scene from Delicious in Dungeon. There’s just something about non-sexual intimacy that is just so sweet to me. I imagine post-canon Yuma doesn’t really understand personal space, considering he wouldn’t have much experience with human interactions. He’s just checking up on Desuhiko after a mission! But despite both of them being very naked he believes that there is nothing wrong with getting all up in his space.

Mmmm forte swap au brain rot upon ye!
I've already completed designs for everyone at the NDA but I wanna space out the posts a bit cuz I don't think I'd be able to say all I'd want to in just one post!
Ramble about character info below; (+spoilers for all of mdarc)
Obviously this is based on my silly doodles for rain code ship week but I've actually started putting a lot of thought in to this now! (I've had waaaaaaay too much free time recently and I'm blessed with the ability to come up with lore/world building very quickly given enough motivation!)
So first off: Why Storm Cypher? Well cuz it's a protagonist swap! Desuhiko's now the amnesiac trainee being haunted by Shinigami so it made sense in my opinion to make this au's name reflectant of his last name, Thunderbolt. So that's where the 'Storm' comes from. 'Cypher' because it's a form of code and... well I just think it sounds nice basically! I do what I do for my own enjoyment, I don't always need to have a reason - no matter what my teachers say.
Also I decided to change some (Not all) character's last name's to better reflect their newly assigned fortes.
Anyway- It's character info dumping time!!!
Desuhiko, like og Yuma, has absolutely no memory of his past. While his personality remains fairly intact, he boards the Amaterasu Express hoping to figure out who he is along the way. While nobody there knows who he is, he instead finds he have a knack for word-play, puns and pick up lines, leading to accusations of secretly being a circus clown as opposed to a detective. This attitude is only solidified more upon meeting Shinigami, the death god with just as many innuendos to make as he does. They get along almost dangerously well, even more so when he learns she has a humanoid form. After completing the first mystery labyrinth, he decides that being a detective HAS to be his true calling, since solving the case was pretty fun all things considered, and receives his hoodie from The Chief to help keep him dry once arriving in Kanai Ward.
Yuma on the other hand, takes the place of co-star of chapter 2. At first he comes off as cool and charismatic but he breaks down almost immediately at the slightest hint of conflict. He's been a very famous musician for years prior to becoming a master detective, though he finds it hard to fully express himself through anything other then his appearance and music. The anxiety induced from an excess of fans, attention, and not knowing who to trust anymore thanks to his own popularity, he was ecstatic to be scouted by the WDO for his talents in disguises. Once it blossomed into a fully fledged forte and he was allowed to work as a detective properly though... they started regretting hiring him. Chaotic, anti-authoritatian and impossible to track down, he's more of a vigilante then a real detective. He was selected to go to Kanai Ward due to it's predicted high mortality rate, the higher ups hoping to dispose of the troublemaker without being too obvious about it. What does APAB mean you ask? All Peacekeepers Are Bastards!!! The Chief wasn't very happy to see him wearing it but permanent marker is permanent.
I haven't decided if I'll change Shinigami's humanoid design yet. If I do though, it'll probably just be more remenicent of her beta design. I haven't decided if I'll swap the Amaterasu Express detectives either though but... maybe I will. Since its forte swap though, the peacekeepers will all remain the same.
I'm hoping to write a fanfic for this, as opposed to like... a comic. But I'm partial to the idea of maybe doing an ask blog as well? I don't know yet. Either way, I'll probably post more for this tomorrow! <3

what if we were raised together but also raised apart, unaware of each other until the day we meet and then- only then- do our lives begin to make sense?
more lore under the cut! (it's a lot)
The labs raised them in somewhat the same way- and both methods dehumanizing. Yuma solves a puzzle for a juice reward. Makoto solves a puzzle to avoid getting shocked. Both get shocked at the slightest display of disobedience anyway. Both have strict routines and regimes where every aspect of their lives seems set in stone. What the scientists didn't take into account was that raising a little genius in such conditions will eventually backfire.
They both escape their labs on the same day, shortly after they turn 20. They also name themselves Yuma and Makoto around this time, only being referred to beforehand as "Subject No. 01" and "Subject No. 02." These escapes simultaneously piss off the researchers but also fascinate them- how much of their identical choices were made based on nature vs nurture?
For the first month traveling alone, Yuma spent his time trying and failing to do everything alone. He eventually receives the help of a stranger and starts helping random people, learning he'll receive kindness in return.
Makoto spent his lonesome travels scraping by and barely surviving without the assistance of anyone else. He's still bitter and angry about what the scientists have done to him. He regrets not burning the whole institution to the ground.
They both meet at a bar, where they, of course, instantly recognize each other's faces as their own. After a lot of guarded questions, they learn that they were both cursed with the same upbringing.
So Makoto asks Yuma to help him return to the Amaterasu lab and exact revenge.
Yuma doesn't wanna hurt anyone, but agrees to come along... with ulterior motives! He wants to show Makoto that this world isn't so bad, and dwelling on getting revenge isn't everything. Think like the core relationship in Mad Rat Dead, between Heart and Mad Rat.
And why is Yuma so stuck on this pacifist philosophy? Well, he'd already gotten his revenge. Turns out, putting a bullet into the head researcher who raised him only made him feel hollow and scared. He doesn't want Makoto to go through the same thing.
They meet the other cast members on the way, doing odd jobs and favors for them and forging small bonds with all the strangers they meet. They help Halara, a pet rescue volunteer, get a cat down from a tree and in return Halara teaches them a few survival skills. The meet Fubuki, who is lost in the supermarket, but it's also their first time in the supermarket so they all end up going on an "adventure" together until the clones escort her back to her limo. She tips them a fat wad of cash that keeps them fed and housed in hotels for like 3 months. They help Desuhiko, an up and coming music star who's anxious about getting on stage. The decide to do an opening act as a comedy duo- Makoto and Yuma are familiar with street performing for money after all- and it not only has the audience in a good mood but eases Desuhiko's anxieties. The clones see their first concert together and it's the most fun theyve ever had. Desuhiko, in return, patches up their clothes for them (though, they do end up messing the clothes up again later, lol) with his impressive sewing skills. They save Yakou from getting beat down by some debt collectors and Yakou lets them crash in his shitty little apartment for a while.
This is really just a really endearing and cute road trip story in my head. It starts off tragic but once they get out it's just two guys who only understand each other trying to explore a whole new world while making other lives better.
They eventually reach the Amaterasu lab again, but by that point, Makoto doesn't have it in him to exact revenge anymore. He hates the place, but it was still his home. It's complicated. He tells Yuma that all he wants to do now is keep traveling the world together.
That's when Yuma reveals he's been secretly planning with the other people they've helped together to expose the laboratory for the corrupt place it is and get it shut down. That way they can get their revenge the right way. Makoto is ecstatic.
After they expose the dirt on their respective labs and have those places shut down, they're free to travel together again and continue helping any random people they see who need it <3
if anyone has any questiosn abt this au ill gladly answer bc it's rotting my brain <3

Halara nightmare relationship headcanons
A/n:An halara post to celebrate international non binary people's day (I really hope I got the date right)
Tumblr media
It's gonna take a while for halara to accept their feelings towards you and even longer to confess. They have some pretty big trust issues, have dedicated their life to only their career and have never expected to fall in love, but once they do accept their feelings and confess, you get to feel all the love they repressed expressed on you.
They're very protective of you, they don't trust people easily (except for you) so they're scared someone might hurt you so they keep an eye out for you when you go outside together, they stand near you but will blush a lot if you hold their hand.
Halara is your sugar parent and you don't have a choice in that, they spoil you so much with all the money they get from cases and bets. You will receive gifts literally every day even if you didn't ask for them, it's always something that you like too, maybe you just mentioned it once but they remember it and brought it for you.
The rest of the agency is very surprised at how nice halara is to you, considering how they act with everyone else, desuhiko especially is angry at you cause you don't have a debt to halara while he's still trying to pay his. Yakou assigns you two on cases together often because it's one of the few ways to get halara to work without having to spend a lot of money, you two work great together though.
They'd love you even more if you're a fellow cat lover, they like to send you cat videos to show you how cute they are. If you give them any cat related stuff, they'll treasure it forever.
You're halara's first love and one of the first persons they trust and like in general and you made their life better, they'd do anything for you, just call out their name and they will be there.

Desuhiko: I like your new pants!
Yuma: Thanks, they were 50% off!
Desuhiko: I’d like them better if they were 100% off. *winks*
Yuma: The store can’t just give away clothes for free.
Desuhiko: That’s… not what I meant.
Yuma: That’s a terrible way to run a business, Desuhiko.
