#devil may cry the show

Recently I've been thinking about the DMC storyline continuing in a supernatural drama show following the events after the 5th game.

Like the pilot involves Vergil and Dante finding their way back to earth after spending years in hell. Vergile and Dante are exhausted and begin going through their mid-life crisis as they grapple with their past while also trying to build human lives for themselves. Vergil choosing to re-enter human society and trying his best to actually have a relationship with his son, Nero.

Nero has actually been busy while they were gone. Lady and Trish brought him on to the Devil May Cry team. So while D and V where down stairs lobbing demons, Nero was on the top floor splitting heads. He's also been working on wedding planning, with Kyrie. See, season ones gotta end with some wedding drama.

V is here. Why? That's a mystery and a plot point all its own. But he's here and has been working part-time as a demon hunter with Nero and the gals. Trish often takes V under her wing and acts as a mentor to him. V is adopted into the family by Nero and Kyrie especially. He and Nico also have a pretty wholesome and friendly relationship. Like Vergil, his whole deal is learning to be human again. But unlike Vergil his body is young and he has a lot more options for a future that does not involve demon hunting.

Nico makes everyone's gadgets and she makes 'em pay too. She's a smart ass, a comic relief, and another pretty face of the cast much like her role in the video games. She's a bit more chaotic and finds a surrogate father-figure in Dante as the show goes on. She's also one of the more down to earth and grounded characters if you can believe it. It might also just be that she has a better grasp on reality than some of the others.

Lady and Trish are series regulars and have their own arks but they're most often seen together. They. Are. Besties. They live together in a big ol' penthouse apartment near the DMC office. (And they were roommates.) Trish does go out and dates and parties and has fun. Lady is more of a girl boss type. She owns her own company involving the weapons of mass destruction, the ade of ridding the earth of demons, and home security. They girl boss, gate keep, and gaslight together. I love them. Auntie vibes.

I have a few ideas for running jokes in the show.

My favorite being that the cast keeps making fun of Dante for his style choices. Throughout the show, Dante keeps adding new and goofy fashion accessories to his outfits that always make him look dorky. Like a pair of oversized aviator sunglass, or a shorts and knee-high sock combo on a hot day, or the one that really got him in trouble: an unironic fedora. He was wearing it wrong anyways.

Another running joke would be Nico getting all the bitches. If there is a hot side character, Nico is at least shooting a shot. She's like the series' Joey from friends. She's a slut in the best ways possible. Episodes will end with a groggy Nero exiting his room and shuffling into the hallway, only to find the tall, dark and handsome guy from the shop earlier that Episode leaving Nico's room in what can only be described as a walk of giddy shame. He watches the man leave, then Nero shakes his head, turns around, and goes back to bed.

I would also like to have episodes that involve V dealing with having a crush on someone. Like an original character that later becomes a series main and V has to not only grapple with romantic feelings (gross) but also learn to navigate dating as an adult. He's painfully awkward but he's also just so hot he doesn't notice the people who do like him, only the ones he likes. That sounds funny to watch.

I think we brush off Kyrie a lot. I think I would love to have Kyrie act as this sweet little young-woman who is very responsible and kind to everyone, but also has a dark side. Like she's got anger issues but they come out in the most unlikely ways. Kinda like a Bernadette from Big Bang Theory. She's sweet on the outside, salty on the inside like a sea salt caramel chocolate. A lot of her arks would involve her trying to help everyone without taking away from herself and learning more about herself as a person. Maybe before her wedding to Nero she nearly calls it off because she goes through a quarter-life crisis.

I think about there being this dynamic between Vergil and Dante that has tension but they're settled on the idea that they're TRYING not to fight. But they just can't help it so their fights evolve into petty little arguments through quiet and hushed dialogue only with each other. Like during the wedding episode, Dante takes his seat next to Vergil in the front row where the family members go and starts mumbling criticisms. "Really? You're wearing that at your son's wedding?" "You're one to talk. You look like a clown who got lost in a bdsm shop." Dante chuckles. "Better than a sexless grandpa." He grunts as he crosses his arms over his chest. "I'm not a grandfather." Vergil pauses, thinks, and looks at Dante. "Do you know something I don't?" He asks abruptly. Vergil is very literal. He thinks that by calling him a grandpa that Dante is insinuating that Kyrie is pregnant. He's a lil offended that Dante would be told before him. Dante throws up his hands. "What? No!- No." Vergil is satisfied with that answer and they both give a sigh of relief. In unison they shake their heads and mutter, "thank god." Did I mention the running gag of Dante and Vergil unintentionally mirroring each other and then they get mad at the other about it?

In later seasons Nero and Kyrie do have a baby and there's a whole thing with that. At that point Nero and Vergil's relationship really begins to heal because there's this new addition to the family and Vergil is actually very excited to be a grandfather as much as he tries to hide it. Kyrie goes through a lot, obviously, but also now she has to learn what raising a demon/human will entail. Kyrie has worked at an orphanage for YEARS so she's not exactly in the dark there but, the possibility of a demon baby is kinda a big deal. Dante and Kyrie actually bond a lot during this time because Dante sustains a real bad injury for the first time in his life. He's been stabbed and ran through and he's fine but in the last magic battle he broke his leg and because it was magic that caused the injury, Dante is now forced to use his back up plan: good ol' fashion human healing. So Dante and Kyrie turn into couch potatoes together for a bit. Knitting and watching TV together while Dante drinks a beer and Kyrie sips on her doctor recommended protein shakes Nero makes her drink. They keep each other company while Nero has his coming to terms with fatherhood crisis that Nico and V try to help him through.

I also think V and Nico getting left alone to babysit would be funny to watch because they're both TERRIBLE with children. But the baby has no fucking idea and is very fond of V who is kind of an uncle to the kid. Everyone else has basically excepted that V is kinda just like another Sparda brother and Nero treats him more like a brother which V is actually really thankful for. V is the kinda guy that thinks he's terrible with kids because they make him nervous. He just doesn't know what to do with them or how to talk to them or really how to take care of one. Nico knows all that stuff, and when the kid is more around 7 she's a fun aunt but she has such little knowledge of how to entertain a baby. She just also just finds them boring. So like, when they work together to babysit its chaotic but the baby's fine.

Patty Lowell would also be a reoccurring character but about as reoccurring as Janice from Friends is. She's grown and off doing her own thing but she loves to pop in on occasion and lovingly bug the shit out of Dante. She fills everyone in on her life which changes dramatically everytime we see her. I also like the idea of her having a body guard character who is hired muscle that followers her everywhere. She's also kind of a y2k daddy's girl trust fund kinda chick and she's comedic relief.

Anyways, that's all I've got for now. I think about these characters a lot. I love them. Night.

i had a thought

in the end of dmc 5, Vergil says they need to "seal the portal with the Yamato".

what does that mean. my thought? He isnt just going to use the Yamato like a tool to close the portal. No, rather, the Yamato is like the lock that will keep the gate shut. Which would mean he'd have to leave it behind.

What only added to this thought was the main menu screens of Vergil and Nero or Dante sitting together in the van. This is most likely a stretch, but, Vergil has never been seen without the damn thing in any time he shows up ever; Yamato is nowhere to be seen in either those scenes.

Food for thought? Possible idea for fics?? A completely bonkers theory that doesnt make sense at all??? Idk. All of the above.

Okay elaborating, having Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante for the Netflix show is awesome for three reasons

That transphobic, pro-disease Trump supporter isn't voicing Dante again, and I'm hoping to G-d someone replaces him altogether for future Devil May Cry related stuff

The fact that JYB originally auditioned to voice Dante, combined with Nero originally planned to be the new protaganist for the DMC games, means that we finally have him living out being the main character of DMC

All three Spardas are voiced by Power Rangers now

For those of you (like me!) who missed it, there was a Behind the Scenes video released for the first Devil May Cry Netflix Anime back in November 2023, which includes a few scenes that aren't in either the old or new trailer!

This is where we got the shots of the female character who might(?) be Lady but didn't appear in the trailers. It's also where we got shots of a fight that doesn't appear in the latest trailer...unless it's an old version that's since been changed. Putting some screenshots and thoughts below the cut!

"Lady", or the Woman in the Behind the Scenes Video

Above: 1) Dante and the woman running on a rooftop, 2) The woman falls off rooftop, Dante sprints to the ground past her, 3) The woman continues falling and Dante gets prepped to catch her (note: there's something on the right that at first I thought might be Kalina-Ann, but on re-watches looks like a broken pipe).

My thought is that this could be Lady because it mirrors their encounters in DMC3 to an extent. The first shot makes me think of running through the library during her fight. The second and third shot of her falling and Dante catching her is reminiscent of when she fell off the Temen-ni-gru and Dante caught her (by the leg).

However...I hope it's not Lady, because other than the hairstyle, she doesn't look like Lady to me. This DMC is clearly going for a more modern aesthetic than DMC3 (and most of the DMCs, with 5 having the most "modern" look in terms of the city), but this woman's outfit reads very techo-futuristic to me and I would rather not have Lady dress like that. It just doesn't feel very Lady-like to me, y'know? That and I just think it was cool when Lady decided to shoot Dante and save herself when falling in DMC3. Please don't damsel in distress her like this :(

(Related: While I know the real reason Lady dresses like she does is that it's cute/hot, I like to HC that she typically doesn't wear armor because she needs to be able to move, and she figures any demon who'll be able to hurt her will be strong enough to make it through armor anyway so she might as well something mobile and comfortable.)

Now I will say, this woman doesn’t have the Kalina-Ann on her, just two pistols(?), so one possible story-line I’m thinking of is that this is Lady, but in a point early in the story where she’s working for some mercenaries or some sort of group to establish herself while she’s hunting Arkham. Then, later on she might split from them and don something more akin to her usual outfits while she runs around with the Kalina-Ann we all know and love. Another option is that this plain isn’t Lady. That’s my ideal.

Another reason why I’d like if this isn’t Lady is that I really do enjoy the young/schoolgirl aesthetic Lady has going in the original DMC3 and DMC3 Manga, because it sells just how messed up Arkham and his actions are. The scene of a teenager being the one to end her father's life and crying over him feels so much more chilling than it would if she was, say, 25. Lady’s a teenager who’s had her mother and her life stolen from her, and that’s tragic. This woman doesn’t read like a teen to me. And while Dante also reads as a little older and anime is notorious for making 17 year olds look 30 and 30 year olds look 17, that doesn’t eliminate the fact that I think an older looking Lady would lower the impact of certain scenes, even if the show says she’s 16. I like when Lady is younger than Dante, because Dante’s this teenager who’s so irresponsible, but then in comes Lady who’s even younger but seems to have it together…until eventualy you come face to face with the idea that oh, oh boy, this is all terrible and no one should be having to deal with this, Arkham what have you done (both with essentially orphaning Lady and partnering with the teenage Vergil (and screwing over the teenage Dante) as part of his evil plan. Which Vergil agrees to and helps with, so he's far from innocent, but still).

It's also possible that the show might've changed aesthetics a bit between the previous trailer and this one.

See these shots from the new trailer (which I will refer to as NT)? I wonder if they're updated variants of this scene from the Behind the Scenes (BtS) video below.

Now I'll admit this is kind of a stretch. Buuuuut I'm going to stretch to make it anyway. In both scenes, Dante is being attacked by a group of humans. Yes, he fights humans across different media, but if the DMC anime is mostly Dante vs a bunch of humans with human weapons, I'm going to be very bored, so that's why I'm hoping this is just storyboard vs Final version of a scene. And yes, I know that's a lot of work to redo...but maybe reception was bad and they pivoted, and that's part of why we went a year without any news.

Other big things: the arcade cabinets.

I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be Dante's shop in both shots, and again, if Dante gets jumped by a bunch of humans in his shop multiple times, I'm going to be upset/bored because really? That's such a basic thing to reuse. Please don't do that. Thus I'm banking on the BtS version being the original idea, with the NT version being what the animators/director pivoted to.

And the thing I caught onto before I noticed the arcade cabinets: the guy(s) on the floor.

Again, it's entirely possible these are different scenes. A guy getting knocked out is one of the most basic things in any show that includes any kind of fighting. But...if they were redoing a scene, why not keep a few of the elements like the guy(s) Dante has knocked out? Are we going to have multiple scenes of people jumping Dante in his shop, Dante knocking them out, and the shop being partially destroyed? Seems excessive.

Lastly, these two shots:

Now the Rebellion thing is deeeeefinitely a stretch. The other stuff I mentioned in regards to this two scenes is stuff I'm pretty sure of Rebellion nah, especially since it doesn't come right after the other scenes in the BtS video (which are all together), whereas all the shots I included of the NT are in sequence. But the reason I included it is because it feels like a very good establishing shot of Dante, where they might have initially wanted to have him fight some people and pull up Rebellion on its own, but later changed their mind to having the zoom happen mid-fight. The way the walls are messed up in the BtS video makes me think that shot's in Dante's shop, and as I've said a million times before, I think it would be boring/lazy to repeat the same events in the same place.

Closing Thoughts

If the fight scenes above ARE the older and newer versions of the same scene, this does give me some hopes that if the woman in the top shots is meant to be Lady, they might've gone back and fixed up her design to make her more Lady-like. I don't want techno-futuristic outfits. I want someone who's in more traditional combat gear or otherwise at least in more cloth. The thing I love about Lady is how she looks like a teenager whose life veered off the road into the realm of demon hunting, and I think the whole "high school uniform paired with guns and belts and so on" does a great job of visually expressing that.

I will say that the military does seem to get involved at some point due to some shots of a gatling gun, armored truck, and missile, and the guys in the BtS video look more military than the mercenary types of the NT, so they still could be two different fights... but I hope not. The modern tech stuff doesn't feel very DMC to me. I want to keep the spirit of the games, even if we go for new things. (And yes, I know the military shows up in DMC5, but they're there for all of two minutes so if they do show up in the Netflix DMC, I hope they're only there for a short while.)

The twins were stuck between a rock and a hard place, battered like fish n’ chips. They struggled to stand, recuperating in a brief moment of peace in the bloodstained field. Not a true peace, as the tension for another inevitable battle charged the air.

“Hey, bro.”

“Yeah?”

“Remember that cheesy song Dad used to sing to Mom? The one with all the funny chanting bits?”

“Why…?”

“I can't stop this feeling~”

“Really?”

“Deep inside of me~”

“Is this.. really the best time?”

“Girl, you just don't realise, what you do to me~”

“...”

“Aw, come on, Verge. You know the words. Just entertain me for a second, it’s not like we’ve got an audience right now.”

“I don’t…”

Vergil hesitated for a moment. This was beyond foolish; why bring up some pointless song at a time like this? They should be planning for the next attack, they should be looking over their injuries, they should be—Damn it all. 

“When you hold me…” Vergil struggled to sing the line as his lungs didn't feel up to the task, but Dante waved in encouragement to keep going. “...in your arms so tight.”

With a wince, Dante threw an arm over Vergil's shoulder and cheekily pulled him closer. Vergil didn't want to waste energy fighting it, but if he was honest with himself, he didn't want to fight it. It was… “You let me know, everything’s alright~” Vergil finished the verse.

Dante grinned at him, satisfied to have lifted their spirits, continuing, “And I’m~” He finger-gunned towards Vergil with his free hand, making him scoff. Still, Vergil played along, finishing the line.

“Hooked on a feeling~”

Dante turned his finger gun towards the horizon where more demons had gathered and were clearly heading their way. 

“I'm high on believing~” the twins sang together, standing up straight in preparation for the inbound battle.
