Cleared and stained image of a juvenile blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus), displaying prominent pectoral fin spines with barbs.

The technique known as clearing and staining is used by functional morphologists to stain certain tissues specific colors (like bone-red and cartilage-blue), while digesting unwanted tissues or making them transparent. This technique is great for easily identifying anatomical structures, such as the cartilage-supported maxillary barbels (whiskers) or the prominent barbs on the bony pectoral fin spines of this blue catfish. As catfish grow bigger and age, their spines and barbs wear down, becoming duller. This is a photograph of a cleared and stained specimen created by Noah Bressman at Wake Forest University.

oh yeah lmao it’s been a while since i’ve posted about my bones collection in general, forgot that y’all might not know about my tremendous and frightening baby boy

here he is! his name is boris. adult male wild boar skull, slightly damaged and missing most of his teeth and lower jaw. i got him for a whopping 5$ plus shipping on ebay and cleaned him myself in the backyard with dish soap and peroxide in spring of 2020. he’s my terrible son who hates me and destroys furniture (don’t worry, the shelf he’s on in this pic is much more stable and he hasn’t caused any problems since the incident) but he wears a funny hat. i’ve been considering buying tusks to try and glue them in because i was upset he didn’t have any, but it would be hard to find a set that fits so i think he’s just gonna stay toothless.

this is about how he looked when he came home to me…. he cleaned up real nice :’) very proud of him. was my first time degreasing and whitening anything bigger than a vole skull so i think i did a pretty damn good job on him
