aka why i didn’t live!blog at all

so. my dad actually watched the episode with me. And I made him be quiet and explained things a bit over commercial breaks.

my dad is notorious for complaining about superhero shows. he likes some sci-fi, but doesn’t get the world’s fascination with superheroes (he would also call aliens and Sherlock and Dr. House M.D. all superheroes, but likes shows like The Rifleman and The Lone Ranger and Star Trek so idk how he thinks). for years he’s casually dismissed it. so I was trying to explain how AoS is waaay more than “just” a “superhero” show, but also a spy drama and political thriller and action show with robots and time travel, etc. 

I really don’t know how much of the show he followed since I did a lousy job explaining which was tantamount to:

 “that guy is their grandson from the future, where the world was cracked apart and enslaved by aliens but not these aliens different aliens that Hydra wanted to stop but now that they’re back in the present these aliens are trying to take over and Hydra was trying to stop an alien invasion but they’re basically Nazis and SHIELD won’t team up with them even to save the world and I have no idea who these aliens are, but they call themselves the alliance. also they’re stuck in a time loop and trying to break it.” 

and 

“that guy was an ally of shield but had a bullet put in his brain last season and after his recovery he was taken and brainwashed by shield and he just went into the chamber with the gravitonium which is an element that disrupts the laws of gravity and the last girl who did that was biologically enhanced to go in there but she only absorbed 8% before she went crazy and couldn’t  control her powers so she had to be killed which is what yo-yo, the girl with the robot arms, was talking about. now he’s becoming graviton from the comics, and he might go crazy and destroy the world or possibly save it, even though everyone thought it might be daisy because she has earthquake powers.”

so my dad is probably super confused.

but at the end he said it was all really exciting and stuff.... and he said he’d have to watch again next week and in my mind i’m like oh no you don’t. you can not just watch the last couple episodes of a season. But I’d be, like, fully willing to marathon the whole thing with him at some point.... if I thought he were genuinely interested. Which I don’t believe he is.

surviving grief: four months later

Today it’s been four months since my dad died.  Some days it feels longer, some days it feels shorter.  It never feels what it is.  The past four months have been strange, which was to be expected, but amongst the grief and the pain, there’s been light and love and random acts of kindness that have left me feeling very blessed.

There’s no set way for surviving grief; you do what you do to get through it.  It never leaves you, and putting one foot in front of the other that first year will always be the hardest thing you will ever do.  The strangest things will hit you.  Today, I realised that the smell of Lush’s Outback Mate soap brings my mind back to the time my dad died because it’s the soap we had in the bathroom then.  Odd things like that suddenly get you in the gut when you weren’t expecting it.

I was lucky, the days and weeks after my dad died, to have friends who instantly came to be by my side.  I remember very little about that time, it’s a haze to me, but they were there for whatever I needed and I’ll never be able to express what that meant.  Here’s a tip: if you can, in the aftermath of a death, get someone to follow you around with a notebook because you’ll remember you need to do things in the moment (call banks, close accounts, etc) but they’ll soon leave your mind.  My friends did that for me, and I really doubt I would’ve been so capable and organised in the following weeks if they hadn’t acted like PAs.

When my dad went into hospital, they were filming the show 24 Hours In A&E.  It was a running joke that we’d end up in there at some point because it’s filmed at the local hospital, so it’s given me no small sense of amusement as I’ve gone through the process of filming a follow up interview and seeing it edited together.  The production crew were all wonderful, considerate, and kind in their approach to me throughout it and while I can’t talk about it until it airs, I am immensely pleased with the resulting product and in a way feel very grateful that they were filming that day, that my dad is being memorialised so publicly.

Mostly, in these few months, I have been overwhelmed by the kindness of people.  Lush sent me a gift set after hearing about my dad’s death & the filming of the interview for 24 Hours.  My friends across the world have been there for me at whatever times to just let me talk and joke and iMessage random shit to them.  There’s been a lot of kindness, and a lot of love, directed my way which I am immeasurably grateful for.

Before my dad died, I always took pleasure in little things because those were the things that gave you the magic you needed to get through life.  This hasn’t changed now he’s gone.  Over the past four months it’s been things like watching the Star Trek aos movies, going to dinner with my friends, yoga to centre and heal myself, loose leaf tea, taking advantage of living in London and visiting exhibitions, marathoning the Fast and Furious series a lot, rewatching Heroes, reading Vanity Fair, seeing Eminem at Reading, singing along to The Wonder Years in Kingston, marching in Pride, playing with dogs, and having the time to read books again that’s kept me going.  Those things have given me those moments of magic that have helped me survive these months.

It hasn’t been easy--there’s been more than one day when I’ve wanted to stay in bed and sleep the day away--but I’ve pushed myself through it.  I’ve made myself get up and get on with something, anything, so as not to lose sight of the life I still have to live.  Sometimes that just means coming downstairs and watching tv because grief won’t let me do anything else.  Other days, that’s the start of me finding my productivity for the day, but either way, I get up and I get out of bed.

There’s no normal.  I would say that there hasn’t been normal since my dad died, but there was never normal.  Not for me, not for my life.  There were only ever moments that made life sparkle.  I don’t want to lose that as I go through this process.  It’s all well and good trying to survive grief, but you have to be able to find more than that, you have to find the sparkle that makes you want to live.

The first episode I saw at the anime club, so I’ve skipped straight to ep 2 for the coverage.

Hmm…Hoshiai no Sora means “The Sky where Stars Line Up” or something of the sort…hence, “Stars Align”.

I already know what happens in this arc (thank you, free Viz chapters!), so now I have this sinking feeling when it comes to talking about Nighteye…

Apparently Bubble Girl was a winning design from a competition. Sorta like how Horikoshi appeared in One Piece one time and that, you could say, was the start of his career in print (so it’s a legacy in a sense).

Okay, so “play house” appears to be mamagoto (literally “mother’s thing[s]” (in a metaphorical sense, playing house is replicating mothers’ chores, so…yeah, mothers’ things), but it’s got the character for “demon” twice instead of what it should have. Hence “murder house”.

Update: There’s not a lot of music to this show…not that that’s a bad thing. It’s good for tense moments, in fact.
