Skit's Mini Painting Journey Pt. 1

Going to split these up into multiple posts so I can tag them correctly.

Long before the time of Jerry Skitariiposting, there was no blog, nor webbed site I was posting pictures to. There was not even Warhammer. There was, instead, 3D printed Heroforge miniatures that I painted for my friendgroup's D&D games.

This is the first miniature I felt proud enough to take pictures of. Looking back, it's alright. The pictures don't show it well, but it did have some different coloring of brass on the wings and underbelly.

Of course, if you give a mouse a mini, they'll want a party painted next. So here's my group's party from back in the day. Largely flat colors, no shading really, and I have no idea what I was doing with the bases back then, but not bad for the early days. I'm still proud of Robert Goblin in the middle there.

Of course, the group needed something to fight, and in a campaign filled with sentient ratmen, I figured I'd get some fodder painted up. These are where we can start seeing noticeable improvements. Shading, some color variety, a little more attention given to the detailing. These are starting to move in the right direction!

A Flesh Golem was requested for a friend of mine's campaign, and so I gave it a shot. This fella's certainly got some more detail work going on, but could use a bit of work in the facial region. The bruising is surprisingly well done for this time period. The dunking of Nuln Oil didn't quite work too well on him sadly, though this would be the inspiration for the oil soaked cloaks of my Admech later down the line.

And finally, I began my first foray into OSL (Object Source Lighting) with this cursed tree monster. I'd say it turned out pretty well, and it is the perfect precursor to lead us into part 2...

i spent 4 whole hours making my dnd character in heroforge (yes that is a crazy amount of time i wanted her to be perfect and i also didnt realize how much time i spent until i checked the clock after) and i wasnt quite done but almost there (just had to add her weapons and fix her clothing color scheme) then i was like ok i have to go to bed so ill finish it later... i left the page open but closed my laptop...... open my laptop 2 days later and the page i guess refreshed itself during that time because my character is gone and its just the og starting template on the page so everything i did got losttttttttttt T_T

Miss Briar! A vampire-werewolf hybrid who loves horror, goth music, and cats. She's sweet but sarcastic, and I wish I had her energy level 😅 She befriends several ghosts, solves a murder mystery, goes toe-to-toe with a cult of necromancers, buys a spooky old mansion to live in with her found family, and really needs therapy. I've collected a few images of her over the years, including some by my own hand, but my current favourite is this one by the lovely @fofoqueirah!

Cesario! My guy! Bisexual disaster of all time! Originally a forgotten pharaoh of Egypt, his servant turned him into a vampire to save his life after an assassination attempt and they fled to the Hittite Empire together and have been in a devoted qpr for like three thousand years. He named himself after the protagonist of Twelfth Night because I'm he's a nerd. Here's a lil version of him from this Picrew:

And then Whiskey. Ey is a monster hunter turned monsterfucker who struggles with self-image because of past lovers who have made fun of eir intersex body, but it's okay, because eir monster boyfriend couldn't be more obsessed! I did end up making em on HeroForge a while back:

My friend @nerdasaurus1200 posted a pirate Tangled post. (The correct answer to the poll is Rapunzel, but I digress.) I remembered I made a One Piece AU after the Netflix show came out so now I’m gonna grace those willing to read with my AU. And in true nerdasaurus style I will do it with heroforges.

Meet Rapunzel d. Sonne. Captain of the Sundrop Pirates and the wielder of the Hair-Hair Fruit, a Paramecia Devil Fruit that allows her to grow her hair out and use it to attack. It can levitate and attack at her command but it seems to have a bit of a mind of its own. It is indestructible so she can also use it as a shield. And she can recall it whenever she wants. She was raised by a ruthless warlord allied with the World Government named Gothel who trained her to be a killer, but then she breaks free from the influence when learning her true heritage. Her father was a pirate who set off looking for the One Piece after Gol d. Rodger’s execution. And how she is possesses the Will of D. So she goes off to make her own crew, find her father and possibly beat him to the One Piece. She is the Luffy of the team, recklessly off on adventure and making friends and enemies wherever she goes.

Meet Cassandra, the only member of the crew without a bounty (as of now). But she is the First Mate of the crew, so it’s about time, but she’s still annoyed that it hasn’t happened yet. Cassandra is an excellent swordsman, trained by her adopted father, a respected marine Captain. (Even if Cass herself never officially became a marine, she was a bounty hunter before joining the crew) Cassandra is also an expert at Armament Haki, able to outmatch a lot of far more practiced users. Cass originally met Rapunzel when she was going after the bounty of Flynn Rider, who happened to be traveling with Rapunzel at that time. But she quickly earns Cassandra’s respect and is coerced into joining the crew. Despite being hesitant at first, she realizes how much Rapunzel respects her and wants to help her to become the world’s greatest swordsman. (Yes, she is the Zoro)

Meet Flynn Rider, (or Eugene to his friends) and Lance Strongbow. They are the navigator and the chef/musician of the crew (when they officially join, that is). Eugene is present when Rapunzel learns her true heritage and joins her and Cassandra on her ship so he can return to the base of his pirate captain. Because in truth they work for the ruthless warlord “The Baron”. Eugene especially is meant to marry Baron’s daughter Stalyan and if he doesn’t, they kill his best friend from childhood Lance. When they were younger, Eugene and Lance made a name for themselves as criminals but Eugene got into some trouble with Baron, resulting in the Barons crew taking over his home town and Eugene makes the arranged marriage in order to save them. So this results in Eugene betraying his friends after bonding with them and hoping they don’t follow for their own safety. (Yes, the Nami.)

Lastly is Mad Alchemist Varian. He is a mix of the sniper and he has a role similar to Nico Robin’s as well. His father is a Vice Admiral of the marines but he himself is an alchemist so he never fit in on his father’s ship. One day, when visiting an important Island, Varian and Quirin get into an argument, which Varian flees from, but when he returns, Varian’s alchemy was used to encase Quirin in amber. After grieving, the marines thinks he did it so he flees and is found by Rapunzel’s crew. And Rapunzel makes a deal with him that she’d help him track down a way to save his father, if he helps her and joins her crew. Which he agrees to.

Everyone who's seen me having a thing for birds will groan but listen, I am small and elusive and I pretend I'm sociable by repeating whatever people say on the same tone so I would. be a kenku

2. What class?

We have had that conversation with the gang and we did agree on college of lore bard so that I can be a nerd without being an academic. also I'm the DM so like I am telling the story.

7. How do you go about making a character or NPC?

For the characters I've built it's mostly been listening to the DM explain the setting and watching my brain latch onto a dumb detail of the lore, do a few somersaults and come up with something fun.

For NPCs I just kind of build them alongside the world and I don't really have a specific process. Also feels like I haven't needed to actually build a memorable one in ages, my players have been going around familiar places for a really long time lately, so I honestly. don't even remember how I've built the ones that are here!

28. What is the most memorable natural 1 you've experienced?

Honestly I must have lived through some harrowing ones but I cannot remember them right now so I will let my players tell me if they have memory of horribly foiling my plans by making me roll bad.

The ones I do always remember are when the -4 INT barbarian rolls intelligence checks and gets negative scores because it's never not funny.

18. Do you use props/minis/terrain in your game?

I DM online for the most part so I use pictures for vibes and battlemaps that I either steal on pinterest or make with dungeonforge. I make tokens with tokenstamp but also when I want to take the time I make little heroforge minis and then screenshot them from above and make pngs with photoshop. I'm slowly building a collection of tiny things to use for table games but it's neither here nor there for now.

Your OCs look very cool! Are they TTRPG characters or part of a story you’re writing or do they simply rotate in your head? What was the design process for them like? Did you start with a name, an aesthetic, a concept, or something else?

They're for a story called Earth Girl that I'll write eventually (when I have the time for it), heroforge is just often my go-to for character design on account of I don't have any art skills.

And yeah the aesthetic was to take every retro sci-fi pulp magazine story and every pin-up art of a girl posing suggestively on a rocketship ever published and then to put it through a transbian blender.

I fell into the HeroForge pit again and decided to make Kadira and a few of the WotR Gang. I blame splurge this ALL on finding out that you could hold something in a tiefling/devil's tail. I poked around and while I only made Arue and Daeran, everyone but Lann could be made on HeroForge and that's due to modeling would have a hell of a time with his two sides.

As such Hero Forge is pretty adaptable even on the free mode! I have pro because I'm going to need to make a LOT of NPCs and HeroForge Avatars are more forgiving than picrew, despite both being the same thing.

Some Tips

Don't Buy Pro - Any 'items' that are pro feature are eventually going to be for the public. The features that aren't apart of free is making icons, doing fancy backgrounds, and saving colors. The backgrounds honestly look silly, you can save colors fairly well on the mix page if you're careful, and you can icon a screen shot and use a free app. Don't Worry About Height - Everything in HeroForge is largely adaptable save head size. Worry about proportions of the body to the head. Don't Worry About Large/XL - Unless if you're planning to buy a model you created, XL doesn't mean a thing in design. Go slap some big honking wings on your Knight Commander or give them a horse! (Or a snake tail.) Save and Play - Save your model under a different name if you're worried about losing an affect or pose you really like! Then go and play all you want. Mousewheel is Your Friend: You can zoom in and catch all the details you need! Play with the Models Linked: Following the link and opening it open places a copy of what someone else made on your broswer or cache. If you give Daeran black hair and pink skin, it wouldn't effect mine at all! They're great to explore what people have done and what can be done.

Mind, someone could download a copy of what you made and use it for themselves and print it out. However the HeroForge community is pretty chill and all this stuff is owned by a company, so no one will make money off what you did.

The Ravening War Heroforges

so I’ve made over 100 guys in Heroforge, and dimension 20 uses Heroforge as a tool when making their minis. this means that I’ll be going along watching and see our boy Raphaniel and go “oh shit that’s my favorite Tunica Skirt from the ancient Roman update!”

i decided to put this weird talent to (good??) use for any folks out there looking to make their own minis/fanart/whatever, and made Heroforge builds of our PCs, using all the pieces I recognized, or their closest equivalent. where I couldn’t find footage of certain angles, I went off the character art.

disclaimer: dimension 20 uses a LOT of resources other than Heroforge to make their spectacular minis (e.g. paint!). this isn’t a ‘aha i’m bootlegging the minis 1:1’ situation - there’s a lot of cool stuff on these gorgeous lil guys that isn’t in Heroforge, which I’ll try to note next to each one. these are approximations of potential base models, not exact copies - all kudos and respect to Shane Brockaway and the other amazing miniature artists on dimension 20 for their exceptional work on the minis this season!

a few things that are different on every build

color (obvs) - I still colored in each guy, mostly based on character art, but obviously the minis are painted (beautifully!)

food stuff - generally, any sort of food-y features (Deli’s toasty Leia buns, Raphaniel’s big ol radish head) are going to not be in Heroforge, for obvious reasons - I still tried to approximate the vibe, but our radish man is simply not going to be as wrinkly as we want him to be

poses - I put each guy in what I think the base pose was, but advanced posing is not an exact science. also, it takes a really really long time. mad props to the crew for some of these excellent poses!

faces - it’s really really hard to tell what face base they might’ve used on the minis. I chose primarily based on vibes and my best guesses. this means sometimes the face changes b/w different versions of the same character. it is what it is baby! also obvs the minis don’t have specific eye color so I went off the art.

Bishop Raphaniel Charlock (link)

Main differences

his big wrinkly radish head. he’s rocking the zuko season 1 haircut for now, and I tried to give him some subtle decal wrinkles. I tried just making his head bigger, but it made the face bigger too - think bobblehead, not megamind - so not the look we’re going for.

his crozier (the only hoe on Heroforge is me *badum tssssh*)

whatever is going around his neck on his chest - it’s all round and pretty and I do not recognize it. used a cowl instead.

the end of his beard - it looks all like roots and is very cool. I put what I think the starting beard was, but I can’t recreate those spindly lil roots w/out some serious clipping

I’m not 100% certain those are his gloves. the ones on the mini are so much thicker! hmmmmm

I’m sorry about the beard situation. the mini itself has painted-on scruff so I just did a decal, but I’m aware it is. not necessarily as good a look up close.

Main differences

those gorgeous slices of rye. the crown thing on top of em isn’t in HF either. I used some swirly horns to approximate, though i was considering earmuffs. they looked too silly for me tho lol.

the toothpick - Detriter, as we now know it is called. I used a javelin and put a lil blue decal at the end to represent the frillies.

the shield - couldn’t find one with those random spikes of bone (nice one d20 crew!), so I used a scutum, a Roman shield of about the same size and shape, bc hey, he’s also Ceresian, which is based on Rome.

Main differences

the d20 crew has hair magic that I do not. also some sort of cute flower behind her ear, which I approximated with a broken off horn posed weird to look like a rose.

Karna Solara (link)

the chili pepper hood w stem. I finagled a horn up there but it just aint the same.

the hair. idk what the d20 crew does to make HF show hair after a hood has been equipped but they crushed it.

this pose is a work of art unto itself. I can only hope to get in the vague aura of it.

same as before mostly - the hoe, the beard, and the big ol radish head. you can’t really see the mystery chestpiece anymore.

his head got so much bigger and saggier I felt like I had to give him something, so I upped the head size a few notches and gave him a little flesh beret with a couple of limp “leaves” coming out of it

you don’t really see it from the front, but there’s a shot where you can see the back of the mini and he has a lil book on his shoulders. iconic.

I probably could’ve made him grimier, but I prioritized face scars. I figure since becoming a knight maybe he’s cleaned up a bit

it is surprisingly hard to get a heroforge person to frown or look sad

update: relistening to ep 1, I forgot we actually get a description of the Fontina banner (”a dotted mountain atop an island”)! so for funsies I gave him a lil banner on his back and attempted to recreate it, using the Dairy Islands banner as a background. go thru the link to check it out, I don’t want to attach yet another image to this monster of a post.

that glove. folks, that glove dealt me psychic damage, because it was on the very edge of my memory but I couldn’t quite grasp it, until I realized they probably added the spikes afterwards. also, I used the ol’ robot hand trick to make it look like he has like a metal gauntlet attached to it. (you replace one hand with an artificial robot hand in the prosthetics/amputation menu)

the decals I used to give him rye bread arms continue onto his chest more that they should (which you couldn’t see when he was wearing a breastplate) c’est la vie.

I couldn’t embed spiky things on the frilly part of Detriter like Lou said in the episode :/ they weren’t on the mini anyway at least

this pose is wild. I think I found the original pose they based it on, but I could very well be wrong. applause to the d20 crew for the sick look!

she still has the flower in her mini, but now it’s on top of her bun - a good look! Alas, no hat options matched, and my mediocre posing-a-horn-weird-until-it-clips-through-the-head skills were not up to the task, so for the moment this HF build remains flowerless.

In her opening shot of the battle (which I included) you can see a big ol’ crossbow on her back, but it is removed in other shots (presumably, it is a separate piece they moved out of the way when she wasn’t using it). so, I did not include it.

fun fact: the rapier the mini is using is much thicker that how the rapier looks on HF. why? Bc most of the older HF sword designs are thicker, so I think they spliced the basket handle of the new rapier with the blade of an older sword, to make it more sturdy for play. or maybe I’m just misjudging blade-to-handle ratio - I’ve never actually 3d-printed any of my HF guys ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the scar - in the character art it’s one straight streak, but on the mini it looks like there might be more (it’s hard to get zoomed in enough to tell). I compromised with one main dark one, and then a lighter, more subtle one going the other way.

the way her burning hand is blackened as the fire rages around it...poetic cinema. transcendent. I used a splatter decal to approximate but seriously it looks so dope on the mini - look!

“Stop thinking I’m racist” has context I swear-

Context: we were having a murder mystery session and one of the people we had to question was this dhampir lady. She started saying stuff like “oh go talk to the vampire lady, I bet she did it-“ and Miles (my pc) went into a whole rant about how everyone is a suspect her included, and that it wasn’t racially motivated etc.

new vs old kento design

if i can dig up the original drawing of this guy i’ll rb this with it, but i’m too eepy to go digging through old sketchbooks, so you get a couple-of-months-old heroforge version of him to compare to the new design 😭 his original design was pretty boring, tbh.

i used to just draw him in a white hoodie and jeans and that was it. idk what the deal was, he had no defining features unless he was using his quirk and had his ears and tails showing jcjskdnfjsnd. also not a huge fan of the old hair, when drawn in my style it’s really similar to kiyoshi’s and also it was kinda lame of me to not try anything new for the style (it really shows in the og drawing, you’ll get to see it once i find it lmao).

but anyway, blurb time!!! i think kento has the most interesting story out of all my bnha ocs, and i’m glad i get to fix it up a little and give him a slightly better life and just a better written backstory in general ^^

kento was originally quirkless; he gained his quirk after he was lured into a facility that was testing quirks and how they affect humans, and was given the quirk artificially. he was neglected and used only for testing his limits for almost a year.

his quirk is VERRRY unstable at first. he doesn’t get much actual training with it until he’s brought to UA, so whenever he transforms it hurts him a lot, and his emotions heavily affect his quirk.

he’s rescued by a group of pro heroes when the league breaks in to steal subjects to use as nomus. the police help find his mother again, and he gets to return home.

for weeks, kento thinks about the lab and the people still trapped there. he wants to help them, he doesn’t want anyone else to go through what he did. he’s never considered being a hero, but the thought of being able to help people still stuck in the experiments makes the career incredibly appealing. he takes another couple of months or so to study up and ease his mind before he talks to his mom about it.

of course, she’s skeptical. it’s understandable; kento had disappeared for so long, and she didn’t want to lose him again. but kento explains his motivations, and they eventually come to an agreement. the UA entrance exam is coming up, and kento needs to practice using his quirk so he has some chance of passing the practical portion (now that i’m writing this, this part is really similar to izuku’s story ncjskfjksf)

i kinda wanna skip to stuff abt him and his bfs, so i’m gonna keep this short. obvs he just barely makes it in, and ends up in class 1-A.

aside from izuku, kirishima is one of the first friends he makes. they like to talk about training together, and later on in the year, they train together in their free time. kento usually brings snacks to share afterwards, and it isn’t long before kiri’s moms and kento’s mom are well acquainted from them constantly visiting each other for training and just to hang out.

kento and bakugou’s start, however, is pretty rocky, mostly because of bakugou’s attitude during the first semester. the only reason they hang out at first is because of kirishima. as time goes on, however, they slowly realize they have a lot in common, and come to an understanding. the thing that really brings them close, however, is bakugou’s headphones breaking. kento offers to share, and baku reluctantly agrees, and realizes he and kento have pretty similar music taste! obvs he’s not gonna soften up massively about this, but he finds that he likes kento a lot more than he initially thought.

for a year, all three of them are basically attached at the hip. one is barely ever seen without the others, and they spend a lot of time outside of class together.

kirishima confesses first, during the training camp arc after they rescue bakugou. kento managed to slip through the portal and follow the league while staying invisible with his quirk, so both he and bakugou disappeared for quite some time. kiri was so worried about losing them again, he confessed as soon as they were all safe. cue kento’s and bakugou’s, followed by a group hug and a few awkward but earnest first kisses.

nowadays, they’re closer than ever, and have gotten in trouble a lot more often for falling asleep in each other’s dorms (and occasionally the common room) after long study sessions.

I did the remaining three disney princesses as they might appear in Mirrorverse!

With Aurora I tried to go for a warrior princess vibe that still felt like the formula of her original dress. And of course, I made it both pink and blue XD I also made her weapon pink, blue, and green as a callback attempt to the three Good Fairies. It’s probably a magic sword that they gave her. I wanted to give her a spinning wheel or seeing needle but unfortunately they don’t have those

With Cinderella I tried to go for more of a mage-y vibe. She’d probably be a healer in the game. Naturally I made her dress silver and her hair strawberry blonde like it was in the film and added some light blues to compliment it as a shoutout to the recolor.

And with Pocahontas, I tried to make her look like a Native American chief. I’m not super satisfied with it though, so this may get an update if Heroforge gets more native american outfits
