दिग्विजय ने मांगा सर्जिकल स्ट्राइक का 'सबूत': भाजपा आक्रामक पर, कांग्रेस ने कहा 'व्यक्तिगत विचार' | Digvijaya requests "evidence" of the surgical strike: BJP goes on the attack, and Congress responds with "views personal"

Mallikarjun Kharge’s Vision for India: Development Over Divisiveness in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party president, is leading the charge in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a pivotal contest for his party and the nation. After facing significant defeats in 2014 and 2019, where the Congress secured only 44 and 52 seats respectively, Kharge is determined to steer the party to victory. As the chairperson of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, Kharge believes that the upcoming elections are crucial for preserving the Constitution, democracy, and independent institutions in India. In this exclusive interview with Frontline, Kharge discusses the Congress’ strategy, the importance of the 2024 elections, and his criticisms of the BJP-led government.
The Significance of the 2024 Elections
Kharge emphasizes the transformative nature of the 2024 elections for both the Congress and the country. He is confident that the INDIA alliance will secure a majority to oust the BJP, which he accuses of being “power-drunk.” According to Kharge, this election is not only about changing the government but also about protecting the Constitution and democracy. He warns that the BJP and RSS leaders are aiming for a two-thirds majority to amend the Constitution, potentially undermining reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs. This, he argues, makes the election critical for safeguarding these provisions.
Why Vote for Congress?
Kharge outlines the reasons why voters should choose the Congress party in the 2024 elections. He highlights the Congress manifesto, “Nyay Patra,” which details the party’s roadmap for national growth. He asserts that the electorate is disillusioned with the ten years of the Modi government, citing issues like unemployment, inflation, and declining incomes. Despite the BJP’s control over major media outlets, Kharge believes that the Congress has effectively voiced public dissatisfaction. He accuses Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying and insists that the politics of development will triumph over communalism and divisiveness.
Addressing Disarray in Congress
Responding to criticisms about internal disarray, Kharge refutes claims of widespread desertions, attributing any withdrawals to threats and bribes from the BJP. He cites examples of electoral malpractice, such as in Surat and Indore, to illustrate how democracy is being undermined. He acknowledges that the party has faced challenges but notes that many members have remained loyal or returned. Kharge emphasizes the importance of identifying and excluding candidates with low commitment to the party’s ideology.
Rahul Gandhi’s Decision and Senior Leaders’ Roles
Kharge explains Rahul Gandhi’s choice not to contest from Amethi, highlighting the significant emotional connection the constituency has with the Gandhi family. He expresses confidence in the Congress candidate for Amethi, K.L. Sharma, supported by Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign efforts. Addressing the absence of some senior leaders in the electoral race, Kharge clarifies that many, including Digvijaya Singh and Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, are actively involved in managing the election campaign.
Controversial Remarks and BJP’s Tactics
Kharge addresses the controversy over Sam Pitroda’s remarks on inheritance tax, dismissing Modi’s claims about the Congress manifesto as baseless. He challenges the Prime Minister to a debate on the manifesto, asserting that the Congress has never aimed to confiscate property. Kharge criticizes the BJP for its alliance with the JD(S) in Karnataka despite allegations of sexual assault against a JD(S) MP. He also dismisses concerns about the alliance’s electoral strength, arguing that BJP’s previous victories in Karnataka were achieved through money power and not genuine public support.
Congress’ Commitment to Welfare and Development
Kharge reiterates the Congress’ commitment to welfare schemes, countering Modi’s derisive remarks about such initiatives. He highlights the party’s track record in implementing welfare measures, such as the National Food Security Act, and promises to double the free food grains provided to the poor from 5 kg to 10 kg. Kharge accuses the Modi government of rebranding Congress-initiated schemes and claims that the Congress’ focus on welfare will resonate with voters.
Challenges and Aspirations for the Future
Kharge acknowledges the challenges of leading the Congress at a time when the party is perceived to be struggling. However, he remains optimistic, pointing out that the party’s resilience has unsettled the BJP. He predicts that the INDIA bloc will secure more than 272 seats, promising a government focused on social justice, progressive policies, and economic growth.
The Importance of Caste Census and Electoral Reforms
Kharge defends the Congress’ support for a caste census, stating that it is necessary for ensuring social justice and not merely an electoral strategy. He criticizes the BJP for distorting facts and spreading lies about the Congress manifesto. Kharge calls for greater transparency in electoral donations and opposes the current system of electoral bonds, which he claims enables government manipulation and extortion.

Nath blames faulty EVMs for crushing defeat in Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh
Congress Party state president Kamal Nath has questioned the accuracy of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the November 17th polls. The allegations came days after Congress faced a crushing defeat in the state.
Recently, Nath chaired a review meeting of Congress candidates to find reasons for their poor performance in the recent assembly elections. He also claimed that more than 100 EVMs were found to be 99% charged at the time of counting. “How can the machines be charged 99% if they have been used for voting for 10 hours?” he asked.
He further alleged that these are the EVMs with most of the votes recorded for BJP, the party that won the elections in Madhya Pradesh. BJP secured 163 out of 230 assembly seats whereas Congress secured 66 seats and stood at the second number.
Nath stated that there were several instances where the party members did not get more than 50 votes from their own villages. “How is this possible? EVMs were tampered with to help the BJP,” he claimed.
Earlier, Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also made claims about the accuracy of EVMs. “We pressed the (EVM) button and did not know where the vote had gone. Now when VVPAT comes, it is shown for 7 seconds. The basic thing is that the machine in which the chip is installed can be hacked,” he alleged.
As of now, there were no comments on the issue from the state’s chief electoral officer Anupam Rajan.
Bhartiya Janta Party however had responded saying that it was Congress making vague accusations to cover up for their defeat.
“To save themselves from any action, Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh are now accusing EVMs for the loss. They should accept that they failed to get a public mandate because of their anti-national thoughts and lies,”

Exit Poll 2023: Predictions for State Assembly Elections
The prelude to December 3rd was set ablaze as exit polls for the state assembly elections in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Mizoram hinted at a tense face-off between the Congress and the BJP in several states. With the assembly election results crucially impacting the 2024 general elections, these projections mark a significant semi-final showdown. However, it's important to note that exit poll predictions often vary from actual outcomes.
Tumblr media
Telangana: Early predictions suggest a potential surprise in Telangana's political landscape. The Congress appears poised to ascend to power, displacing the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) into the second position, relegating the BJP to a distant third, according to projections. If realized, this would mark a historic shift since Telangana's inception in 2014, wherein K Chandrashekar Rao has held the chief ministerial position. This potential turnover comes following the transformation of KCR's party, founded in 2001, into the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and its subsequent national expansion.
Madhya Pradesh: Most exit polls lean towards a favorable outcome for the BJP in Madhya Pradesh. Despite these predictions, the Congress has contested the forecasts, emphasizing the importance of a vision over mere television. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh referred to past inaccuracies in exit polls, calling for precision in the data presented.
Rajasthan: Forecasts depict a fierce battle between the BJP and Congress in Rajasthan. The involvement of smaller parties and independent candidates may potentially influence the formation of the forthcoming government in the state.
Chhattisgarh: Projections indicate the likelihood of the Congress maintaining its grip on Chhattisgarh, with the BJP positioned as a close second. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel remains confident that the Congress's numbers will escalate on the counting day.
Mizoram: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) appears poised for a sweeping victory in Mizoram, set to unseat the Mizo National Front. Both the Congress and the BJP trail significantly in this contest.
These exit polls provide insights into the potential outcomes of the state assembly elections, suggesting potential shifts in political landscapes across these regions. The actual election results, however, remain eagerly awaited, as history indicates a degree of variability between exit poll predictions and the final electoral verdicts.

MP: Political row erupts after two government officials participate in RSS event
The opposition party’s Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate Vivek Tankha demanded that the Election Commission of India keep such leaders away from preparations of the Assembly polls.
Tumblr media
Bhopal: A political controversy has erupted in assembly poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, over the participation of two government officials in a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) program in Satna district.
The controversy erupted after a picture of Satna district collector Anurag Verma and Satna municipal commissioner Rajesh Shahi participating in a traditional RSS prayer alongside RSS and BJP leaders on the concluding day of Sangh’s training camp on June 11 went viral recently.
While the opposition Congress leaders, including Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha have demanded that such officials be kept away from the preparations for the year-end MP Assembly polls, the BJP has defended the presence of the two government officials at the RSS event, saying neither is it unconstitutional nor does it violate any code of conduct.
Tweeting the picture of the two government officials participating in the RSS program and saluting the ruling BJP’s parent outfit’s flag, the state Congress’s media wing head KK Mishra said on Tuesday, “It can’t be expected that such officials will perform their duty without any bias in the assembly polls. Their behaviour is against the conduct meant for civil servants. We’ll make a complaint to the Centre’s Department of Personnel and Training.”
The opposition party’s Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate Vivek Tankha demanded that the Election Commission of India keep such leaders away from preparations of the Assembly polls.
However, responding to Congress’s barbs, the state BJP secretary Rajneesh Agrawal said there was no violation of the code of conduct by the officials. “Taking part in an RSS event is not illegal or unconstitutional and doesn’t violate the code of conduct. The RSS, which works under constitutional arrangements, is a democratic, social and cultural organisation,” Agrawal said.
Importantly, in April 2003, the then Digvijaya Singh-led Congress government banned state government employees from taking part in RSS activities/programmes, treating it as a violation of the state civil services (conduct) rules 1965.
However, three years later, in August 2006, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government, ended the restrictions imposed on state government employees from participating in RSS activities.
Twelve years later, the Congress in its 2018 assembly polls manifesto, had mentioned that “RSS shakhas will not be allowed in the government premises and the government order allowing government officials and employees to attend the shakhas too will be scrapped.”
But even after coming to power in December 2018, the Kamal Nath-led Congress government fell in March 2020, paving the passage for another Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government in the state.

‘Will win 150 seats’: Rahul Gandhi's prediction for Congress in MP election
Gandhi addressed the media after the party's 'election preparedness meet' in Delhi, attended by top Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
Tumblr media
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday predicted that the party will win 150 out of 230 seats in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly election later this year. “Karnataka election result will be repeated in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi told reporters after the party’s meeting on election preparedness.
“We had a detailed meeting just now, and our internal assessment indicates that after securing 136 seats in Karnataka, we are now projected to win 150 seats in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
In a video shared by ANI, when asked about the Congress party’s chief ministerial candidate for Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi chose not to provide a direct answer but emphasised the party’s goal of winning 150 seats.
Kamal Nath who served as the state chief minister during Congress’ short-lived government in the state between 2018 and 2020, said, “We discussed the strategy and the issues on which the party should contest these polls. We are all of the opinion that we will enter the poll fray unitedly.”
Preparing for upcoming elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh
Besides Rahul Gandhi, Kamal Nath, Digvijay Singh, and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, met party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the upcoming assembly election in the state.
According to news agency PTI, Rajasthan Congress leaders were also slated to convene in Delhi, including chief minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.
Both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are set to hold elections by the end of this year. Currently, Rajasthan is under the governance of the Congress party, led by Ashok Gehlot, while Madhya Pradesh is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Shivraj Singh Chouhan serving as the chief minister.
Congress promises for Madhya Pradesh
Congress, last week released a list of ‘five promises’ to the people of Madhya Pradesh ahead of the assembly election:
1. Gas cylinder at ₹500
2. ₹1500 to every woman per month
3. 100 units of free electricity, 200 units halved
4. Farm loan waiver
5. Implementation of old pension scheme
Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh had earlier said that Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath is poised to be the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming 2023 assembly election.
The assembly polls are expected to take place at the end of the year. In the 2018 elections, the Congress emerged as the largest party and formed government under Nath’s leadership. But in 2020, Nath was forced to resign after his government was reduced to minority due to resignation of 23 Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Jyotiraditya Scindia. The BJP later formed the government under Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
