Indigenous peoples made engravings alongside dinosaur footprints in Brazil
Tumblr media
In the Paraíba State backland municipality of Sousa, dinosaurs are something of an attraction; abounding in preserved footprints, the Valley of the Dinosaurs conservation unit is open to visitation, and also home to a museum of fossils found in the area. Consequently, paleontologists were the most interested in the region until recently. The attraction now is for archaeologists: at the Serrote do Letreiro site, 11 kilometers (km) from the town, there is also rock art on the ground made by people who may have lived there up to 9,000 years ago, associated to the footprints left by animals between 130 million and 145 million years ago. These primitive messages, never before seen in Brazil, suggest that the parallels were intentional, according to an article published in the journal Scientific Reports in March.
“This site is a real overdose of information,” says paleontologist Tito Aureliano, one of the study authors, a postdoctoral researcher at the Regional University of Cariri (URCA), and one of the coordinators of the Diversity, Ichnology, and Osteohistology Laboratory (DINOLAB) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). “There is a considerable temporal mix there: rocks almost 1 billion years old, then you walk 50 steps and see traces of the Cretaceous Period (about 130 million years ago); there are dozens of different dinosaur footprints and human engravings made some thousands of years ago,” he adds.
Serrote do Letreiro is an area of 15,000 square meters (m2) in the Paraíba sertão (badlands) on a private property. The site was first recorded in the late 1970s by Italian paleontologist Giuseppe Leonardi, one-time professor at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), now retired. At the time, he classified the markings — or petroglyphs — as “Cariri Indigenous carvings,” and focused his interest exclusively on the dinosaur prints. “These human engravings attracted no attention,” remarks paleontologist Aline Ghilardi, of UFRN, also coordinator of Dinolab and coauthor of the recent study.

January 2021 | Dino Lab in Victoria is one of North America’s premier fossil prep labs, with displays around the world. Not to mention a really fun little museum and operation here in Victoria. Big thanks to the @globeandmail for this one, and thankyou @dino_lab.inc for the visit and letting me nerd out for a few hours. #DinoLab #Victoria #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #Canada #onassignment #fossils #dinosaurs #dinosaurfossils #dinopreplab (at Dino Lab) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLusp_nA3bm/?igshid=45qopgnmzrn2

An embroidery project on the famed ‘Dueling Dinosaurs’ of Hell Creek, Montana. Depicted are the entangled skeletons of a Triceratops horridus and a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex, engaged in riveting battle before their sudden death on a Cretaceous coastal plain. These fossils are exceptionally preserved; the tyrannosaur is missing several teeth, has a broken finger and a deformed skull, while the triceratops has rex teeth embedded into its spine, and preserves skin impressions on its frill and hips. The former is also the most complete skeleton of the species to date, ranging between 98–100% completeness (a rarity unto itself!). For reference, the second–best preserved tyrannosaur (FMNH PR2081, otherwise known as ‘Sue’) is 85% complete, while the type specimen for the t–rex (CM 9380) is only 10% complete.
Still, surprisingly little is known about the duelling duo—and very few people had seen them until recently, despite their discovery in 2006. For fourteen years the ‘Dueling Dinosaurs’ were the subject of legal debate, with absurdities like ‘can fossils be legally considered minerals’ being touted round in court (answer: no)—so they’ve only recently been acquired by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, to the relief of scientists worldwide (given that there were multiple attempts to sell them off to private investors). Now in 2023, the dinosaurs will be on public display in the museum’s Dinolab—but in the meantime, palaeontologists will be getting into the nitty–gritty details of what these specimens tell us!

“The fossils were first found on a ranch in Montana in 2006, but they sat gathering dust in warehouses for years while several families argued in court over who legally owned them.
Now they’ve finally found a home in a public museum where they belong. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will make the Dueling Dinosaurs the centerpiece of its new expanded fossil wing, which will also feature the SECU DinoLab, where visitors will be able to watch paleontologists work.
“We have not yet studied this specimen; it is a scientific frontier,” says Dr. Lindsay Zanno, head of paleontology at the museum. “The preservation is phenomenal, and we plan to use every technological innovation available to reveal new information on the biology of T. rex and Triceratops. This fossil will forever change our view of the world’s two favorite dinosaurs.”
Construction on the new wing is set to begin in 2021, with the doors opening to the public in 2022.”
