51 days of social dispainting, poster

As an alternative to the stretched videos, consider quantity of screenshots as way to show time. This is a less visceral portrayal of the long time, but is perhaps more accessible in terms of audience attention. Shape of poster mimics stretched 2m canvases; this is perhaps the easiest iteration for combining process and painting - a 2 metre poster hung with its 2 metre painting.

EVALUATION OF ALL SOCIAL DISTANCE WORKS

In terms of concept I do prefer the stretched videos. I don’t think this outcome really reflects the dragging monotony of time and life in the quarantine in the same way that the videos do. As I move towards my final piece plan I have to consider which avenues are most fulfilling towards my original enquiry. The difficulty I have in realising a complete outcome that connects both process and output in this project is a reason that I might not continue down this path. Also, whilst this has been borne out of primary research in the sense that I am drawing from my experiences in quarantine, I think my other enquiries are richer in terms of research and concept. They address a long-standing interest of mine regarding cultural and generational identity, and explore collaboration in a deeper, more interrogative way. I have liked the automatism of these works, setting up a structure, with little control over the outcome, but I don’t think there is much more mileage here.

51 days of social dispainting, 51 min

51 minutes extract of original painting footage, slowed down so that a single viewing would take 51 days: the number of days in quarantine on the day of recording. Link to ideas about time in quarantine, feels like it has warped, time is not what it used to be.

Takes inspiration from Douglas Gordon’s 24 hour psycho and Tobias Rehberger’s 81 years.

SUMMATIVE REFLECTIONS IN REGARD TO FMP

I am glad I trialled this idea as an attempt to add more context to the performative documentation of these paintings, but I do not think this is an outcome I will take further.

REFLECTION REGARDING CURRENT CONTEXT

This piece does the opposite to my Birth of Grannygate triptychs in that it slows the dissemination of information. Considering I am making work to be seen online, I think I should be focussing on condensing concept, such as in the poster, where hours of footage are simplified to some screenshots and text.

Potentially this could be viable if were accompanied by the paintings or some other visual to give faster insight into the process, but I am not convinced enough by this idea to test that. 

Instead I will introduce a poster alternative? 51 images?
