Name: DK Pass Debut: Mario Kart DS
DK Pass is your average Mario Kart snow course. There is nothing all that special about it. It's not a bad track, by any stretch of the imagination (even if getting run over by a snowball after a blind turn can feel a little cheap), but I do find it a pretty forgettable one.
Anyway. Isn't it weird that this is a Donkey Kong course for some reason?
Tumblr media
Yes, that is literally the entire reason I am talking about this course!
The Mario Kart series has always loved exercising its god-given right to arbitrarily name generic courses after whatever character they so feel like. Toad has a turnpike, Yoshi has a desert, and Donkey Kong has a snowy mountainside! This is Mario Kart after all! They gotta remind people that this series is about these guys:
Tumblr media
But I end up singling out DK Pass because out of all the courses arbitrarily named after characters, it easily feels the most arbitrary. At least Toad's Turnpike had pictures of Toad on some billboards, and Yoshi Desert had the big Yoshi Sphinx! The only thing that makes DK Pass a Donkey Kong course is the name. If you renamed this course to "Cool Cool Mountain" or something, it would have no connection to Donkey Kong whatsoever.
I mean, when you think "Donkey Kong" and "places you'd associate Donkey Kong with" you don't really think "big snowy mountain", do you? Maybe you do. Maybe your only exposure to this character is the existence of DK Pass. I'm not judging.
youtube
DK Pass wasn't always a winter wonderland, though! Early on in development, DK Pass was a more standard mountain track, with green grass and everything. This version of DK Pass is generically named donkey_course, and while it's clearly early on in development here, you could argue that this version may have been a jungle course reminiscent of DK Mountain, or that it could be set on Donkey Kong Island or something.
But at some point in development, a developer said "Hey! We don't have our obligatory Snow Course yet! We can't have a Mario Kart game without an obligatory Snow Course!" And another developer said "You're right. Let's turn this Donkey Kong course into our obligatory snow course. And let's keep it a Donkey Kong course because he has such a lovable face."
It was either that, or they didn't want a course called "DK Mountain" two games in a row. But if that was a concern...
Tumblr media
Then why did they give Donkey Kong ANOTHER snowy mountain course in Mario Kart Wii?! This is DK Summit (known as DK's Snowboard Cross in PAL regions), and while I think its Donkey Kong theming is marginally less arbitrary (this course does have a barrel cannon after all!) it's still weird that there was a period in Mario Kart history where the go-to theme for a Donkey Kong course was "snowy mountaintop".
Tumblr media
Of course, since the release of these courses, we've gotten Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which aside from being one of the best games of all time, is also all about Donkey Kong Island being frozen over!
Tumblr media
I'm not trying to suggest either of these courses are set on Donkey Kong Island, that would be silly. However! I do think it'd be a fun way to re-theme DK Pass if they ever bring it back again! It would go a long way to make the course feel a lot more memorable, especially since DK Summit does everything it does and does it better. Plus the name would actually make sense now! Bonus!
The only concerns would be places that localize the name as "DK Alps" or "DK Ski Resort," but the original Japanese version is generically "DK Snow Mountain," and that feels like the most important one. Sorry to the other localizers that made perfectly reasonable decisions before this course became Tropical Freeze themed in my imagination!
But I wouldn't get my hopes up, since both these courses are in Mario Kart Tour, and both retain their original designs there. As far as Nintendo is concerned, DK Pass shall remain one of the most bafflingly-named courses forever... And maybe it doesn't really matter all that much! I mean, it'd take someone really pedantic to make such a big deal about this course's name, right?
*slides the rest of this post under the rug*

Hermits as Songs from the Mario Kart Wii OST
(yes specifically Wii, not mariokart 8. Their rendition of moo moo meadows is bad)
Bdubs- Maple Treeway (pretty song for the man with pretty builds. who am I kidding, all their builds are pretty lol. still think this one is vibey and suits him)
Beef- Moo Moo Meadows (yes, I think the chill vibes fit him, it's not just because there are cows. It's maybe a little bit just because there are cows)
Cleo- Luigi Circuit and Mario Circuit (first off, can't believe they used the same song for two courses. second off, nice song with interesting stuff going on throughout. she can have two courses, as a treat)
Cub- GBA Battle Course 3 (funky beat with higher energy and also just plain fun)
Doc- Grumble Volcano (spooky ominous song for the man who insists on playing a villain lol, but there's still more to it to make the song interesting)
Etho- N64 DK's Jungle Parkway (can't believe this man always builds in a jungle. same tune all the way through reflects his consistency in content [I mean this in a good way lol, his videos are great])
False- Rainbow Road (pretty song, gives me the sort of grand feeling that reminds me of her s9 base)
Grian- Chain Chomp Roulette (I don't know how to explain it but half the tune sounds like it's a satire of the funky chicken dance. Kinda baffling but still a good time)
Gem- Coconut Mall (a lot of fun but not overwhelmingly chaotic, iconic)
Hypno- SNES Battle Course 4 (look man idk, it's literally past midnight and this is what I'm doing. it fits his vibe I think)
Impulse- DS Delphino Square (good song with a lot going on, but balances it all very well)
Iskall- GCN Mario Circuit (great song with just the right amount of funk to it to keep things interesting)
Jevin- GBA Shy Guy Beach (got me boppin my head man, very pleasant tunes)
Joe- SNES Ghost Valley 2 (less a song and more like two minutes of spooky noises being strung together, which sounds like the kind of bit he'd commit to. Beetlejhost)
Joel- Moonview Highway (high energy, kinda crazy, lots of fun and great vibes)
Keralis- GCN Peach Beach (matches his tropical vibe this season)
Mumbo- Koopa Cape (kinda weird. kinda funky. half of it sounds like it's underwater, who comes up with this stuff)
Pearl- Mushroom Gorge (bouncy, lots of personality, lots of layers to the music and lots of layers to the detailing in her builds)
Ren- Aqua Resort (a banger, keeps things insteresting all the way through, a lot of fun)
Scar- GCN Cookie Land (not just because of the cookie shop lol. bouncy tune, a good time for Mr. Goodtimes)
Skizz- Finished Race [First Place] Results (not a course related song but still a banger, giving it to him because he deserves first place, and because I've only got good memories associated with it)
Stress- Daisy Circuit (pretty song, fairly chill with just a bit of a kick to it, reminds me of her brand of chaos)
Tango- Toads Factory (very industrial, fits his base this season. I was tempted to give it to Doc though)
TFC- Wario's Gold Mine (while a chiller track would probably fit him better, we're settling for the Mine One. Still a good song though)
Wels- N64 Mario Raceway (a bit calmer as far as some of these songs go, but no less interesting and fun for it)
xB- DK Snowboard Cross (calm. vibey. could have half his house blown up in demise and still be cool about it)
Xisuma- Block Plaza (fun, and the blocky noise reminds me of tech-related kinda stuff. not exactly reflective of his more naturey build style, but does relate a bit to his minecraft update videos or redstone work)
Zed- Dry Dry Ruins (much like this song randomly switching to a completely different song halfway through, I never know what he'll be doing next)
Playlist of the songs if anyone cares enough to listen to it and tell me why I'm wrong lol, but given I spent several hours on this and most people don't listen to the mario kart wii soundtrack for fun, I'm willing to assume I'm in safe waters

A perfect fit for thrill-seekers and holiday lovers, DK Summit (or DK's Snowboard Cross if you'd prefer) now has a stadium in Super Mario Spikers! Use the unique halfpipe shape to get extra height for your spikes on either side of the court. Just look out for oncoming Shy Guys!

I rant about Mario Kart Wii because I can
So the final wave of the Mario Kart 8 booster course pass is coming out next week and obviously I am super excited for it!! The new courses look awesome, and I can’t wait to try out the new characters, but since it’s the last wave I am a bit sad as well. There were so many courses that deserved to be remade into Mario Kart 8, but what was the roster mostly made up of instead?
Wii tracks
I do love Mario Kart Wii with all of my heart, it was my first Mario Kart experience and one of the first video games I ever played as a child, but holy shit. It got WAYYY too much representation
Here’s a list of all Mario Kart Wii nitro tracks in Mario Kart 8
Base game + WiiU DLC:
Moo Moo Meadows
Grumble Volcano
Wario’s Goldmine
DLC:
Coconut Mall
Mushroom Gorge
Maple Treeway
DK’s Snowboard Cross
Moonview Highway
Koopa Cape
Daisy Circuit
Rainbow Road
Mario Kart Wii tracks not in the game:
Luigi Circuit
Toads Factory
Mario Circuit
Dry Dry Ruins
Bowser’s Castle
So out of the 16 nitro Wii courses only 5 didn’t make it into the game, which is kind of crazy. Not to mention all the retro tracks that were in Wii that also made it to MK8, like Peach Gardens (DS) and Waluigi Stadium (GCN)
How does that compare to the other games then?
Tour - 14 tracks (17 if counting Merry Mountain, Ninja Hideaway and Sky-High Sundae but tbh the amount of Tour tracks is just as much of a problem as Wii tracks)
Wii - 11 tracks
3DS - 8 tracks
GBA - 8 tracks
DS - 7 tracks
GCN - 7 tracks
N64 - 6 tracks
SNES - 4 tracks
That’s a pretty big difference.
Personally, to level out the numbers and bring back some tracks that deserved to be remade, I would drop Mushroom Gorge and Koopa Cape from the mix. Both were retro courses in MK7, and Mushroom Gorge has barely changed between MK7 and MK8, apart from one mushroom being removed and a higher quality version of the theme. Koopa Cape has had some minor changes: the underwater pipe is now antigravity and the MK8 version has mixed the gliders from MK7 with the half pipes from the original, but I just don’t think it needed it?
Another track that I’m not sure on is Moonview Highway. I love Moonview Highway, but wha are some other non-Tour city tracks with moving vehicles that have only been remade once/have never been remade? Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City from Double Dash, though I’m leaning more towards Mushroom City since it has a similar vibe to Moonview Highway and has never been remade, whereas Mushroom Bridge was in MKDS.
I think Wario’s Galleon from MK7 would be a good stand in for Koopa Cape. Although it’s far from a tropical and upbeat track, it’s mostly water based, and even though it’s not one of my favourite 3DS tracks I think it would vastly benefit from antigravity since it’s layout already has some nearly vertical climbs. I was actually hoping for this track over Rosalina’s Ice World in the latest wave
As for Mushroom Gorge, I would put Airship Fortress in its place. There aren’t many similarities between the two, but goddamn it I just want a remake of this track is that too much to ask? It was my favourite DS track when I was younger, and I know it was in MK7 like Mushroom Gorge but I can actually see some improvements to be made!! Turn the spiralling tower into antigravity!! Have some singing Shy Guys added to the music because I know for a damn fact they’d be sitting inside the ship!! Add some really strong electric guitars to the music as well while you’re at it!! Nintendo are missing out big time give us Airship Fortress cowards!!
If they were still insistent on giving us 11 Wii courses at least bring back ones which have never been remade before. Toad’s Factory is an obvious choice. It’s a fan favourite and just a super cool track overall. It’s honestly a crime that it’s been stuck in MKWii all these years. Honestly Dry Dry Ruins and Bowser’s Castle could also be good for a remake but they’re nowhere near as popular
Other tracks that deserved to be included, in my very biased opinion, are: Wuhu Island Loop/Wuhu Mountain Loop, Shy Guy Bazaar, Luigi’s Mansion, Delfino Square, Dino Dino Jungle, Rainbow Road GCN, Shy Guy Beach (yeah I could just go on-)
To sum it up, Mario Kart Wii gets too much spotlight and other courses deserved a remake more than some of theirs. Also, I’m a nerd with a Mario Kart fixation, if you couldn’t tell already

SPARROW I HOPE THE OVA IS STRICTLY ABT DK AND PARIS MATCHABLOSSOM 🕯🕯🕯🕯(I am manifesting) I WANNA KNOW WHAT THEIR PAST IS JDJDN
RIDER HELLO, I AM MANIFESTING THIS ALONG WITH YOU🕯🕯🕯🕯 I ALSO WANT TO KNOW THEIR PAST. I WANT TO SEE THEM TRAVELLING THE WORLD TOGETHER. I WANT FLUFF. I WANT ANGST. I WANT IT ALL. It would be soooo cool if the OVA had a framework narrative of the kids and Shadow wanting to know more matchablossom when they were younger and bullying them into talking about it, so we get this whole history laid out EXCEPT Kaoru and Kojro can’t agree on what actually happened in some parts so the story keeps getting interrupted by one of them being like, “That’s NOT what happened. Let me tell it.” I can think of NOTHING more on brand for them. I want this so bad.
As for season 2, do you have any theories about what’s going to happen next? <3 I’ve been thinking about it, but I’m not really sure. I feel like it’s just wishful thinking lmao but I’d love to see Kiriko taking Ad*m down and then everyone else having to deal with the drama of S being shut down as a result, maybe having to find another place to skate and that sort of thing. Again, might be wishful thinking, but I’d also love to see Renga go canon (they’re basically there already, I just want to hear them SAY IT) andddd I’m crossing my fingers for a matchablossom subplot of some kind… I would also LOVE another found family vacation, but maybe this time they could go to Canada and try snowboarding adjkgdsjkgjkdsg. My thoughts are all over the place, I’m just so excited about the possibilities.

how do NTSC players tell the difference between DK Mountain, DK Pass, DK Jungle, and DK Summit
Whenever I see summit instead of snowboard cross it takes me like a minute to figure out which DK one it is
And on a different note, why does donkey kong have a near-monopoly on mountains? Excluding Mount Wario + “Rock Rock Mountain” (aka the inferior name of Alpine Pass) all the mountains are his? Nintendo I need answers
