From time to time I get a question like, "do you have this or that book?" So, a few weeks back, I finally took them all out of their hiding place and grabbed some photos. Wish I had used my camera instead of phone, I had to stand on a chair to get it all and yeah, the picture is not the sharpest.

Anyway, I have some other stuff, figures and such, although I admittedly DO focus more on books as an artist/writer/translator. These books are the ones I translate from so I wasn't going for mint conditions, although a few of them are. You can see some of them still packed in the store bags. I included the CDs cause... well, they were next to the books and they do have some printed material as well.

The Shiren Suiki book gets a separate photo cause after taking the photos at home I realized I had left it at work when I scanned it... practically crying as I did cause it was barely opened when I bought it and it's a beautiful book. My Anvils are also very fragile.

I may do a complete list one day but for now, here are the quick descriptions.

ARTBOOKS & FANBOOKS I have pretty much all of the major official books I think, missing maybe 1-2 pieces. The one that may look less familiar is Hiroshi Osaka's personal artbook. I also have four of the relevant Nobuteru Yuuki artbooks. The bottom right one with the orange title is the issue of Newtype Magazine with a feature about Esca.

SMALLER BOOKS (let's pretend that's a category) Here I got all the novels (they are out of their sleeves cause I was working on them), all the filmbooks, Secrets of Escaflowne, Escaflowne Bible, and the Energist Memories manga/doujin collection.

DOUJINSHI I was mostly going for stuff I haven't seen online so I only got a handful. Besides the Shiren Suiki book, there are three Minato Tajima doujins (one of them is racy heh but I'm not hiding that I have it). One of the other doujins may look unfamiliar; it's a compilation book that includes other series (the character on the cover is from DN Angel). People who talk to me on Discord probably recognize the Nanoka doujinshi cover.

CDs AND THE LIKE I don't have all the soundtracks for some reason, probably cause I thought the missing ones wouldn't be hard to get. The PSX game is the special edition with the tarot cards. The LDs that I literally bought just for the covers and inlays. I also have all the audio dramas, some CDs with extras... and a phone card that was for some reason packed in a CD case lol (kidding, it's precious that they would give it that kind of protection). Oh, and there are two movie posters which I guess don't fall under either category.

I have some other stuff that is kinda related to Esca "by association" such as by artist or things that "looked similar" but I didn't include them. Also the figures. I may update this post with those but this is the brunt of it. I will be posting some goodies from these soon!

Same goes for the ongoing translations that I've been doing updates on in this post. Life is too short to delay them for months and years because of perfectionism, or rather, being self conscious about one's imperfect language skills. I am thankful to everyone who has helped me so far, proofreading my translations (coverteyes, pikafwance, sevenstars, and radical-rad1986)... I'm not tagging you guys but know that I'm VERY grateful, also to the other people who are helping me with other projects). I always had fun working together with you but it's no longer sustainable and I likely bit off more than I can chew. So I will get myself out of the way. There are two books that are almost complete as of today so I will just probably go chapter by chapter. I hope to be done with this asap but also December is a busy month for me so I'm not sure how smoothly it will go. Let's hope it does.

Turns out I have some more feelings about the manga I finished yesterday. Not naming it so this doesn’t end up in the tags. Please don’t read this, lol. The fourteen year old version of me jumped out.

I think the thing that bugged me most about this last stretch of DN Angel is how much it felt like Yukiru Sugisaki was just...done with the whole thing. Like everything felt very rushed towards a specific, easy conclusion that didn't address a lot of the interesting pieces she had previously laid down.

Like, I remember reading those last few chapters before the eight year long hiatus and HOLY SHIT there was so much! The Dark/Risa relationship all of a sudden becomes an actual threat, not just to Daisuke/Riku, but to Daisuke himself! Satoshi completely lets his guard down around Daisuke, trusting that the person he loves will make this huge sacrifice for him, and when Daisuke refuses he POINTS A GUN TO HIS OWN HEAD. AND THEN WHEN HE GETS CAUGHT HE GOES OFF INTO THE FOREST WITH. THE. GUN!!! AND THEN!!!! RIKU FINDS OUT DAISUKE IS DARK!!!!!!!! IT'S WILD AS FUCK!!!!!!!!

And then we come back and a lot of this is immediately dealt with in a comedic fashion and we just move on. Dark and Daisuke don't talk about that Risa interaction. No one goes after Satoshi. Daisuke comes up with some excuse and Riku is satiated for now.

Then we got the whole dream circus arc. Which was honestly alright. I enjoyed Daisuke coming to terms with the fact that he cannot separate himself from Dark. They are one and the same, for better or worse. And honestly, at first I thought this arc was going to lead us somewhere interesting. Because if Daisuke and Dark now understand that they are a package deal, how do they deal with the whole Riku and Risa thing???? (The answer is they basically don't but I'll get there). I was 100% ready to love this arc and then they did...the thing and I...

Okay, look. Full disclosure, I've been a DN Angel fan since I was like, fourteen. It is linked to me in a way that can only happen when you're obsessed with something at the height of your awkward teen years. And the thing that continues to be my favourite part of the whole story is the relationship between Satoshi and Daisuke. They were my number one ship, not just at fourteen, but...honestly probably through all of my teen years. Like, remember when people used to make jokes on this website about someone asking about your otp and you pull out your binder of reasons? I literally made a Satodai binder. That's not a joke. They were it for me.

And, don't get me wrong, there was never a point where I honestly thought the manga was gonna have Daisuke leave Riku and end up with Satoshi. I dreamed about it, but didn't honestly expect it. BUT I loved the way the manga addressed Satoshi's feelings for Daisuke. This is someone who Satoshi treasures above all others. The person who makes him believe the world can be better. The person he would do ANYTHING for. Like, Satoshi LOVES him.

Which is why it's so frustrating to me that Yukiru Sugisaki decided it would be better for Satoshi to have a two second dream about Risa that changes all of his feelings instantaneously. Like, I'm not here to shit on Satoshi/Risa fans, and I'm happy y'all got your ship. Honestly. But, the two of them have barely spoken before this and then Satoshi has a dream and literally says, "oh I guess my feelings have changed now" like...two volumes before the end! AND THEN THEY DON'T EVEN TALK UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE SERIES. FOR WHAT????

It honestly just read to me as, the mangaka wanted to end the series and Satoshi continuing to be into Daisuke was too emotionally complicated to quickly wrap up so he loves Risa now. And hey, that clears up the whole Dark/Risa thing, right? I'll get to that.

ANYWAY, so then we jump into an elongated story about some past Niwa/Hikari drama which would've been fun if I hadn't been growing more and more confused as I noticed how few chapters were left and we were STILL ON THIS. Like, I love when DN Angel gives us fun new characters to talk about. Hell, the Freedert arc and the Argentine arc are two of my favourites. But, when you only have a limited amount of time...It just felt like this was something Yukiru Sugisaki was maybe sitting on for awhile so she didn't want to skip it, but she also wanted to finish the story as soon as possible so the ending comes IMMEDIATELY after which makes this whole arc feel...weird. Like...we could've spent our last few chapters on the characters we know and love but...instead...

Then we get to the endgame. So, quick poll, do we think the mangaka already had this ending in mind before the anime came out or do we think she decided to do the anime ending because she had no idea how to finish the story. I'm really not sure, but either way it felt soooo anticlimactic given that we've had the anime ending for almost 20 years. Like...what was I waiting around for if you were just gonna do the same thing????? And look, I honestly never finished the anime because I couldn't stand the way they chose to characterize some of my favourite characters (most notably Satoshi and Risa) and I'd read what the ending was and hated it lol. But I digress.

The thing about the ending that gets me most is that it all comes on so fast. Like, you wanna do the anime ending? Okay. Don't love the idea, but okay. BUT it all happens in like... 2-3 chapters. Like, all of a sudden the Black Wings is sucking up power from the artwork and, oh no, here comes Krad ready wreck shop. And then we, randomly at THE END OF THE MANGA find out Satoshi's adopted Dad is actually his real Dad and also he's a piece of artwork which makes Satoshi half a piece of artwork???? Why are you telling us this now???? Then Satoshi and Daisuke seal Dark and Krad into the Black Wings the end. Like...????? That's it?????

OH ALSO I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THE HARADA TWINS ARE MOVING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. HONESTLY PROBABLY BECAUSE IT FEELS LIKE YUKIRU SUGISAKI FORGOT TOO SINCE THERE'S NO CLOSURE ON THAT?????? (Honestly, I'm laughing because I literally forgot about this fact until just now. AGAIN WHAT WAS THE REASON LMAO!!!)

Okay, so the story's done but where does it leave our favourite characters???

Daisuke and Riku have figured their shit out and are...presumably going to do long distance??? Idk, they never really address whether they're staying together or not as far as I can remember???? Like, this is the relationship I thought we would get the most closure on but ?????????

Risa just gets to be sad for awhile I guess. It's honestly so infuriating to me that we got this awesome moment before the hiatus where Dark asked Risa if she would love him no matter what and she says yes with her WHOLE CHEST and that's enough for Dark to almost, like, take over Daisuke's body permanently. Like, her love for Dark is as real as Riku's love for Daisuke but she's not allowed to have a happy ending like her sister. She gets to see Dark one last time where he kisses her and hopes she'll always be his best girl and then he flies off into the night while she begs him not to leave. Then, she gets to cry in the street, trying to remember him while everyone else is forgetting. Well, at least she has Satoshi, right????

But like, we don't even know if she likes Satoshi that way. There's been...no indication that she does as far as I know. And as he's hugging her, Satoshi is having these thoughts hoping she'll be able to remember Dark because he knows how meaningful he is to her. So their ending is LITERALLY Risa gets to be horribly heartbroken and Satoshi gets to pine for someone else who, at this point, doesn't love him back.

Like, once again not to shit on Satoshi/Risa fans but...is this the ending y'all wanted????? Because as someone who stans them both this just felt horrible. It reads as a feeble attempt to "pair the spares" (since in the story the mangaka wanted to tell, neither of them could be with who they originally loved) but, like, even then this is the saddest way to do that. OH! And once again, if Risa is moving, ARE THEY EVEN GOING TO BE TOGETHER????? Like, what are we supposed to get from this what is the REASON??????

And then there's Dark and Krad being stuck in the Black Wings for eternity. The biggest reason I didn't like this ending in the anime. Like, look. I get that you have to end your manga somehow. BUT if your plan was to reunite Dark and Krad in this way I don't understand why you would write a whole interaction, mere chapters before, having Dark say that that's the LAST thing he wants to do. HE SAYS THAT THEY AREN'T THE SAME ANYMORE AND THAT HE DOESN'T WANT TO RETURN TO HIM. AND THEN HE'S FORCED TO DO JUST THAT. FOR. WHAT?????

Like, Dark isn't a villain. He's one of our main protagonists and has been this whole time. I get that in stories sometimes characters have sad endings. (I've already argued that I think both Satoshi and Risa's endings were bittersweet at best). But to have Dark say mere chapters before it happens that he categorically DOES NOT want to rejoin Krad and then force him to do just that feels like such a needlessly cruel thing to do to this character we're meant to love.

Once again, it just felt so much like Yukiru Sugisaki wanted to end the series as quickly as possible. I get her wanting to come back to it; she's kinda notorious for not finishing things so I get the impulse to just drive through and get at least one story done. But, it felt like so many things were skipped over or changed just because it made getting to the end goal easier and less complicated. Not addressing some of the cool shit she laid down before the hiatus, completely morphing Satoshi's feelings in a dream, writing off Risa's feelings for Dark, telling us all of the Satoshi backstory stuff at the last goddamn minute, giving Dark his worst nightmare as an ending, so many of these things done just to move things along towards a specific end goal as fast as possible.

Honestly, there's a part of me that wishes she hadn't come back and finished it at all. I was happy enough with the ending I had written in my head and would've preferred it to what we ended up getting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Anyway, to anyone who actually read this (and a part of me hopes no one does lmao) thanks for listening to me ramble. And if you're a Satoshi/Risa fan, uh, sorry I hated on your ship lol. You're cool.

This season’s name…sounds counterintuitive, to say the least.

I love how Genos is carrying a box of hijiki (which looks like hair) and Saitama’s wearing a shirt that says “hair” (in kanji) all over it. It’s funny for a bald man and his “work of modern art”.

I never knew Genos was so blunt. Maybe because the last season was a good 2 – 3 years ago…and was by Madhouse and Shingo Natsume, and so this feels slightly different.

Oh, Sonic…! I didn’t realise how much I missed you! (Not to mention, you look hot with the off-the-shoulder shirt, y’know?)

It’s Takamatsu being Takamatsu again. Also… I forgot to mention this earlier, but…Taiga Umatani seems to be related to Kurari Umatani (who is credited for Boueibu), so…I wonder if it’s a collective writer’s name for Studio Comet, like Izumi Todo for Toei? The only thing that goes against that is the fact “Kurari” existed during the Diomedea days of Boueibu. Also Isekandar seems to be related to Yamato’s Iscandar (which Takamatsu seems to like, based on the fact he once used Matsumoto metres as a shorthand for being in space). If you don’t understand, Yamato’s endgoal contains a place called Iscandar and that’s by Leiji Matsumoto.

Okayyyyy…what are these rabbit creatures…? But yes, it does smack of Boueibu simply because the episode layout’s the same.

Hmm…? So Robby seems be En (the do-nothing life) in spirit, but Kinshiro in background, but also he runs away from his fortune. “Hmm” indeed.

Oh! That’s what this string of misfortunes reminds me of! The monsters of the day from Boueibu.

Hatchi is a Kinshiro in looks but an Atsushi by being a goody-goody.

Hmm…they actually bother to show girls now…apparently Takamatsu went to a boys-only school, which is why his original works focus on dudes (as in, you can pick out when Takamatsu is adapting someone else’s work because it has a heavier focus on girls as supporting characters).

Mechs and spaceships are probably two of the only ways I accept CGI…and you, Takamatsu sir, have just done it (the latter)!

Come to think of it, Daisuke from DN Angel had to dodge traps every day before he became Dark…(thinking of this because I reread the first volume of DN Angel recently)

I just really like how Tanjiro’s eyes grew larger with what was clearly resolution before he closed the door.

Why do the non-descript hunters look like Giyu too…?

I’ve never seen KnY so comedic…and that’s coming from someone who thought the Head Demon fight from last episode was funny.

Welp, this is…kinda interesting (<- says a fan of Touken Ranbu).

This letter writing…it reminds me of Kekkai Sensen somewhat.

This realistic water…it’s beautiful, but it looks like it came straight out of Niagara Falls. Is that…too realistic for anime?

I’v read the wiki page for Chuuya enough to know the next few eps involve the LN Fifteen, so even though I haven’t read a translation of the source material, I know some of the ins and outs of it already.

I think at this point in time, all viewers are used to Dazai’s bulls*** by now.

Is it just me…or did Bones use CGI for the city? It actually looks kind of good…! Sasuga Bones!

I have a fic that predates Fifteen and could be set in the same period (the fic’s vague enough that it could’ve been them at 15, 18 or even 12)…and basically the only thing I got wrong was the fact Chuuya doesn’t have his hat (because I wrote Chuuya as having his hat in the fic). Also, the banter is tenser than I imagined it, but that’s subjective and something only I, the fic writer, can compare.

I wonder who the yellow-tinted Ability holder is…? Update: That’s Randou. Spoke too soon.

Well, with only one suspect (or 3, if you count the Sheep kids), it was quite easy to figure out one of them was behind it. I kind of suspected Randou, anyway, considering what I’ve learnt from all the mysteries I’ve read.

Because I was watching this episode with the volume down low (so I could hear the OP and ED), the volume really did work wonders for the plot this ep…!

King of Prism – Shiny 7 Stars 1

This is the final debut of the season, so basically how this and Shield Hero perform will decide what will stay and what will go. Oh, yeah…apparently this is the companion to a movie, but the movie and TV series have slightly different content.

Well, he shot my fav so I’ll never really forgive him for that. BUT throughout the series, Matsuda is the one character that ever really questions what he thinks to be truth. He’s the one that brings up that crime has gone down a lot after Kira, which took some guts to point out. Nobody else had the balls to say it, but he did. And later he thinks sometimes that he kinda partially agrees with Kira but that the methods are wrong. He’s examining his beliefs, which I admire.

I have friends that are kind of like him, and probably everyone needs a Matsuda. Someone you know will pick you up if you’ve had too much to drink, or help you out of a bad situation. He’s loyal and trusting, maybe too much for his own good. So you’d have to be careful not to deceive him since obviously, he doesn’t take that well.

She’s a supermodel so yeah, she’s gorgeous! It’s kind of too bad that she fell so hard for someone who wouldn’t appreciate her, but that was part of the plot device I guess. She was no angel either and did plenty of morally grey (or just evil) things in her own right.

There’s not a lot in her personality or motivations that resonates with me, but I appreciate her style and her ability to make friends/have fun in any situation. Some of my favorite parts of DN are when she’s trying to get Light, L, and her to all get along, or when L is ‘directing’ her for the Yotsuba ploy.

HowI feel about this character:Ryuk’shilariously apathetic about the worldwide chaos he causes for thesake of some easy entertainment, and I love him endlessly for that!He’s very honest about his motives and his own ignorance about a lotof important stuff, and he can easily range from goofy and sheepishto scary and powerful at the drop of a hat. I think he’s so much moreinteresting than some sort of evil devil character that wants tomaliciously tempt Light into using the DN, or one that gives a crapabout humanity and chooses Light specially for godhood. You justgotta watch the Netflix movie to see how much that shifting of hismotives would weaken his character!

I wish shewasn’t introduced to the story to basically interrupt the Lawlightfun, because that makes her seem more annoying than she actually is.I feel sorry for her a lot of the time, and I wish she’d gotten sometherapy instead of deciding dedicating her life to Kira was theanswer to all her problems!

Bad news- A bit after I sent the last message mom apparently found out about Tumblr and decided that I probably shouldn’t get an account here because of all the NSFW content. I get why she’s worried so I guess I won’t be getting an account here for a while.

Good news- HOWEVER, I was chatting with someone on ao3 and they asked if we could move our convo somewhere else. They recommended something called Discord so I got an account there. If you’ve never heard of Discord it’s basically a voice and text chat system usually used by gamers, but it seems to be pretty popular among non-gamers too. PMing is possible there :D (The only flaw is that you can’t send very long messages, so you have to send multiple short ones, which is a bit annoying…but otherwise it’s pretty neat so maybe we can try it if you’re ok with that?)

Yep it was one of the grossest things that ever happened to me OTL I’m still swimming but I’m taking a long break right now- a break that started because my little sister broke her toe and we were basically stuck at home taking care of her (the pool is a bit far for me to go on my own so if mom’s stuck at home so am I), and then got longer because the pool’s old and some things had to be ‘fixed’, and then got even longer because my coach is getting married (just reread that and realized that I sound super annoyed, I’m actually not, I have no problem with my coach getting married XD). I’ll probably start again around next month, though :)

Oooh are you a comic fan??? I haven’t read any superhero comics because there seem to be so many AUs(?)/different timelines so trying to figure out where to start is really confusing, plus I actually sorta prefer manga/manhwa art styles (not that wester comics are bad- a lot of them have really good art too, I just personally prefer the manga/manhwa styles (especially for the panels). Also the ecchi-ish costumes/anatomy for almost every single female superhero gets a bit ridiculous sometimes lol). Some of them seem really fun, though, and I’d like to try them out someday…

Everyone thinks Gon should relate to Tony on a personal level but he doesn’t, because despite being a sunshine angel he’s also a freaking weird kid who doesn’t hate Ging. At all. I’m considering teaching myself to animate just to make those animatics XD

(Also, random thing: it’s Chuseok over here (basically like the Korean version of Thanksgiving, I guess?) and usually, people recieve money from older relatives during holidays like this in Korea. I got about 80 dollars (50 from my maternal grandparents, 10 from my paternal grandfather and 20 from my uncle) so I’m debating on what to spend it on: It’s either a tablet so I can learn how to do digital art (I’m thinking about polishing my drawing skills for a while and then making a webcomic. My parents support this so they’re willing to pay a little extra for a tablet) or a ukulele (I like the piano but I realized a while ago that it’d be great to have an instrument that I can carry around, so I did some research and the ukulele seems good. I really like the sound so I’m willing to put some effort into learning it). Idk which one I should choose, though. Technically the tablet should be my priority but I also like the ukulele…

Yeah, she’s alive :D but apparently Kaneki is now 'dead’ (though I don’t think he is really, if Ishida kills him off now (after all the stuff with Hide? All the character development Ken hasn’t gotten yet? When he still hasn’t talked about anything with Shuu or Hinami or even Akira?) and gives us a new protagonist or something I might finally rage-quit this series.

Or not, since with all the Touken stuff and Kaneki being sorta insensitive ever since he became the OEK…maybe a new protagonist is what we need?). I was liking all the parallels with Arima in the first series until this, because it was just…um. I think my main problem with the whole thing is the freakng PACING because it just feels so clunky and awkward. This is probably one of those chapters that will be really good if Ishida somehow manages to connect it with the next chapters and has everything make sense later, but if he doesn’t do it well it’s going to suck forever OTL

At least TG finally confirmed Naki’s death, though. I mean, the ideal situation for me is if he never died in the first place, but at least a confirmed death is better than Ishida suddenly bringing him back to life after that panel with Yamori. And his death scene was handled well. (Now please just tell me that he, Kanae and Hairu aren’t coming back as Kanou-Furuta zombies and I will be semi-satisfied)

Yeah, I’m really excited for OC’s name too…must be something important if they’re keeping it hidden for this long. I guess it’s French (or a word from some other non-English language) since 'Ciel’ is French for 'Sky’…and it probably has a meaning related to the sky since they’re twins. Idk. Maybe it’s the word for 'star’ ('etoile’) since stars are also a big thing in this arc?

But also, I just found a post on tumblr that said Takeshi Obata (DN’s artist) mentioned that Ryuk’s face in canon could just be a mask to hide his true appearance…which means that he could technically still look like that in canon. Wow. I actually think I have the book where it says Obata mentioned that, I have to go and check it now lol)

Watch it if you dare and prepare to weep over all the wasted potential, because now that I read/watch more about it I guess the saddest thing is that it COULD have been great. I mean, like I said, the visuals are REALLY good, L’s actor could have been a good L if not for the bad script, Ryuk’s actor/design were also super great (it’s just his role in the movie and his motivations they messed up ;-;)…

Dumb question but are Magical Boy animes allowed? If they are, then maybe something from Cute High Earth Defense Club Love? (It's a real anime i swear)

Short Answer: No, sorry.

Long Answer: I’ve thought about including Boueibu/Cute High Defense Club a few times, just because unlike a lot of shows that get called “magical boy” or are just simply shows where boys have magical powers - it’s very much still aimed at female viewers and mimics magical girl tropes while celebrating them. It’s a silly show and never takes itself too seriously, but I wouldn’t say it insults the magical girl genre or makes fun of the characters for wearing feminine outfits (unlike say, “Kore wa Zombie”) -at least from what I remember of the 1st season.

But I also think if I let Boueibu in, then I’m not exactly sure where to draw the line for other “magical boy” shows? Like you could say the same thing about DN Angel or She-zow or Mythical Detective Loki. Heck I’m sure someone could make a compelling argument about Harry Potter being a warm-well-meaning parody of witch books for girls like “Worst Witch”

Which, if you think these series have a place alongside magical girls & are worth exploring, that’s fine, but I just don’t want it to be a focus of this blog.

James Spader’s debut in the art of representation took place in the cinema in the early 1980s, but in the nearly four decades of his career, the actor stood out as a TV character in “gray” or completely dark. That was the unethical Alan Shore of Fair Cause and Boston Legal or the puzzling Robert California of The Office. But also from Raymond “Red” Reddington from The Blacklist, NBC series issued in Portugal by SIC. Dressing the skin to these villains is not an imposition, but Spader admits in an interview that DN had access that feels “a certain attraction” by them.

“I’ve always found anti-heroes very attractive and of course playing a villain who mixes his evil with humor and irreverence can be a lot of fun,” he explains. In fiction, he believes, tyranny represents “in many respects the extremes of society” and is a “kind of morbid curiosity” in knowing these extremes that impels it.

The success of his “Red”, the man most wanted by the FBI - who gave himself on the condition of being released and in turn helping to catch criminals on a blacklist - is also due to “luck” On television had come “at a time when anti-heroes were not plentiful.” “Now there’s probably more, though I do not have time to watch TV. In his house, he says, “there is not a single television yet.” “I’ll move in soon, who knows if there will not be?” Jokes Spader, 57. “I do not know if this is not a paradox … I spend so much time, so many hours, [NOTICE HE KEEPS BRINGING UP HIS SHOOTING SCHEDULE? Incidentally, probably not watching the fiction on the small screen is that James Spader does not have a formed and "objective” opinion on the evolution of the industry. “I do not know if I understand the business, I know it’s changing, it’s getting more involved and growing, it’s expanding in a dizzying way, [AND HERE COMES THE OAK TREE TO PROVIDE ENOUGH SHADE TO REACH LOS ANGELES] but it’s very complicated to be aware of what happens if we spend a lot of time working, [WORKING SHOOTING, NO TIME WITH HIS GF OR FAMILY NO TVS IN THE HOUSE DOESNT WATCH THE SHOW NOT ABSORBED IN RED ITS NOT HIM AND HES TIRED OF THE CHAOS-MY BELIEF, THE BAD WRITING. Compared to other NBC hit series such as This Is Us, Chicago Fire, Chicago Justice, or Timeless, [ALL THESE SHOWS HAVE BETTER RATINGS THAN THE BLACKLIST. THATS HOW BAD THE SHOW IS. End KEEN2, SHAKE THINGS UP GO BACK TO RED/LIZ/RESSLER ENOUGH OF ARAM HES HAD THREE STORYLINES IN ONE YEAR AND TOM HAS HAD THE MOST EXPOSURE THAN ANY ACTOR COMBINED AND WHAT DID THEY GET? LOSS OF ADVERTISING 0.7! KEEP IN MIND IF TBL DEBUTS AT 0.8 ITS TOAST.  He had been restless in Coalby and was uncomfortable leaving.  What had gone wrong?  Or had it gone wrong?

On the CMSP&P - Chicago, Milwaukie, St. Paul & Pacific

The mainliner was more like it:  Pullmans, a dining car, a club car and observation car.  And he had a reservation.  He tossed his bag under his assigned seat and looked around.  There wasn't going to be any action in this car.  The action, if there was any action on this train, was going to be back in the club car and he worked his way through the swaying Pullmans.  A floating game of boysandgirls was in the preliminaries. Who is who?  Who was who?  Who has who?

Who is who?  Names had to be applied to faces.  Who was who?  There was an unpublished pecking order and without published credentials the individual players where stuck with establishing a personal identity.  Who has who?  There may have been a couple of false starts but for the moment there were no obvious commitments, no someone possessed another someone.

There was a vacant seat beside a girl, he waited for her to look up at him and smile.

"Rose Ann."  Rose Ann.  Rose is a rose is a rose, her name described her.

"Donald."  She appraised him more carefully than she had before.

"Donald, Donny?  Which do they call you, Donald or Donny?"

"Donald?"

"Why, why Donald?"

"I don't know, it was one day, it was a long time ago.  I decided I wanted to be Donald, it was my name, Donny wasn't."

"I don't know which I like best.  Donny is sort of sing-song, musical, like a wavy line. Donald seems to have sharp, square corners.  What does your mother call you?"

"Donald."

"She has always called you Donald?"

"No, she used to call me Donny."

"But, she doesn't now?"

"No."

"How did you get along with her when you were home?"

How did this girl, Rose Ann?, how did she know he had been back home, back to Coalby, back to see his mother?

"Now, just now?"

"Yes."

"Fine, I guess, well, things were sort of strained."  She looked at him, them beyond him, then back at him.

"Do you ever think she might worry about you?"

"I can take care of myself.  I don't know why she should worry."

"But, you worry about her?"

"Hell, yes, she has it pretty rough."

Rose Ann heard his answer, but was again looking past him and he turned to see what had caught her attention.  The window tossed back their reflections, his looking out the window, hers looking over his shoulder.  There were, he had never seen them before, fire flies, real fire flies, millions of them and they were flying in the ditch beside the railroad tracks.

"But, you don't see the difference?"

"What difference, what is the difference?"

"She has no control over your life."

"I think she has.  I don't do anything she can't accept."

"I don't mean that, I mean something could happen to you."

"Something could happen to her."

"Its not the same.  You know all the things that could happen to her.  You know that in a little town there would be someone who could help her or take care of her. "

"Well, yes, I guess."

"But, you say, you say you tell her you can take care of yourself."

"I can."

"She isn't sure of that.  Oh, you can buy a car, get drunk, chase girls, send out the laundry, you can do all of that.  But when a mother's son leaves a little town the worry in her mind is, who is going to take care of him?"

"But it is not just me, we all have to leave."

"Yes, and all mothers have to sit home and wait and worry."

"You sound annoyed."

"I am, it’s so damned selfish.  Really, you can run around and have a good time.  You can pretend you feel sorry for yourself. You can think your part is tough. Your mother has it tough.  Do you pray for her?"

Another religious freak?  "No."

"Do you pray for yourself?"

An acolyte looking for a convert? "No."

"Why not?"

"All this praying.  Someone goes out and does something stupid, does something dumb, gets into a situation and then prays to get out.  When I get into something I only blame me.  It is up to me to get me out."

"You are self centered.  Do you pray for anyone, anything, ever?"

"Down on my knees?  No, not that way.  Not like you. In my own way I do. Yes."  He could feel some of the tension between them, some of her annoyance with him, was beginning to ease."

"What is your way?"

"You have a book, a whole book of instructions, a book you believe, a book you understand, a book I don't understand."

"But, it is the Book."

"For you, yes.  For me, no, it is a myth that was written fifteen hundred years ago. four hundred years after the fact."

"Then you don't believe?"

"Verbatim?  No, but, take a myth back far enough and there is a hint that the myth was based on a fact."

"What do you believe in?"

"What I don't understand."

"What do you don't understand?"

"See those fire flies?  How do they blink?  Why do they blink?"

"They blink, it’s got something to do with phosphorous.  They blink to attract a mate."

"O.K., but why?  Why?  This is my point.  Why? Why does phosphorous make them blink? Why?  Why does the blinking make them sexy?  You get into a round of why?, because.  Why?, because.  You can't get out of that round and round.  You see, you believe, but you don't understand the big why."

"I guess I don't understand."

"That is the point."

On the C&NW

The boysandgirls game made the change in St. Paul from the CMSP&P club car to the C&NW club car almost intact. While the game had been for 'fun' on the CMSP&P it was turning into a game of for 'keeps' on the C&NW. It was shaping up, like these games always did, with the campus queen and the big man on campus pairing off and leaving the cortege to work out a pecking order and a pairing off to the lesser endowed. Her name was Kay, probably Catherine and his was Vince, probably Vincent and the game was changed to Kay's and Vince's party.

"I know someone at the Palmer House."

Maybe Vince did.  It was in Chicago and it was big and the Palmer House had a big name and there was an afternoon to kill between trains.  Chicago was big.  So was Los Angeles, but Chicago's downtown seemed to be a series of steam-heated, traffic-jammed, concrete canyons.  The desk clerk in the Palmer House looked at him, framed half an unasked question and spun the Cardex.

"Nine sixteen, the elevators are to your right, to your right."

He would have gone the wrong way if the clerk hadn't pointed.

"Floor?"

"What?"

"Which floor, please."

"Nine sixteen, nine I guess."

He knew about elevators, move to the back and face the door."

"This is nine."

"Thank you."

Which way?  An arrow pointed that way, nine sixteen was that way.  There was no clamor, there were no party noises coming from behind the door.

"Its open."

She turned away from the window and looked at him. He thought her name was Madge, but he wasn't sure.  She studied him.

"Donny?"  There was no point in making a point of that.

She studied him for another moment and turned back to the window.  "Where is the party?  Where are Vince and Kay?"

"They will be back."  She tossed her answer over her shoulder.

The boysandgirls game died when the C&NW pulled into the station.  The Vince and Kay party was busy falling on it face.  If Madge and Donald were castaways on the same desert island they might, it was remotely possible, they might work out something in common.

"I'll be back."

MacArthur had said,"I shall return." with greater conviction.

Madge, or whatever her name was, did not turn around. So much for Chicago and the game and the party and Madge.  He wasn't sore at her and she probably didn't think enough about him to be sore at him.  There were the Madges of this world and there were the Rose Anns.

Would there be a club car and a boysandgirls game and a Rose Ann on the L&N to Cincinnati?  There wasn't.  He was hungry and he was tired and he would be in Cincinnati in the morning.  When in Rome... .  When in Cincinnati?  When in Cincinnati, if there is nothing else to do, be a tourist.  There was nothing else to do.  What did tourists do?  Tourists checked their bags into the L&N baggage room, went to the news stand and bought a city map, went to Woolworth's and bought a cup of coffee and spread out the map on the counter.  For the rest of the morning and for the afternoon he would be a tourist.

Rome has seven hills.  Rome has fountains.  Rome has history.  Rome has baths.  Cincinnati was a city when most of the cities west of the Mississippi were army posts or indian villages.  Cincinnati had three hills and on one of them was the University of Cincinnati.  A street car grinding past the L&N station was going to go up one of the hills to the university.  The conductor waved him aboard.  

He sat at a table in the courtyard of the Student Union and let a wave of sensations wash over him.  The noise from downtown was remote and mixed with campus noises.  It was cooler here.  Sprinklers splashed up the sweet smell of wet grass, a smell like fresh cut hay.  Bees sang one note bee songs in the flowers. A single sparrow was scolding about the few crumbs left from the sandwich.  A soft wind teased the campus flag.  A second wave washed his mind clear of the last of the past year's clutter. For that moment he wasn't 2nd Lt. Craft, Donald Elgin.  It was as though he didn't have a name.  The noises from the cafeteria seemed to grow louder.  He felt as though he was a part of that sound, a part of the campus sounds. When and if.  It was the bittersweet game of 'when and if'.  When it was over, if it was ever over.  When his uniforms were packed in the bottom of the foot locker.  When. When the collar brass and the ornament and the wings were tossed into a cigar box.  If.  If he was was not too old, he would like to go to UCLA, or come back to a college like this university, the University of Cincinnati.  Back to college, he would be older and wiser.  Maybe.  But, there wouldn't be the rush and the pressure.  There would be a time to read, to think, to live.  There would come a time when he would be out from under the shadow of tomorrow.  There would be men he could like.  Even now he thought of Dave and missed Dave.  There would be girls, or a girl, a Virginia, or a Lillian, or a Beth, even a Rose Ann.  There would be a time when they could walk together, hold hands, talk together, sing together and feel that they were alive, oh, so, very much alive together.

2nd. Lt Craft, Donald Elgin left Donald Elgin Craft sitting at a table in the courtyard of the student cafeteria at the University of Cincinnati and caught the same street car back down the hill to the L&N station.

On the L&N

Tonight in the dining car on the L&N, tomorrow on the Southern and tomorrow night he would be in Sommersville.  Back to, like they sang in Stage Door Canteen, 'back to the Army routine'.  

"That is twice you have done that."  A man seated across from him was wearing a wilted seersucker suit and a limp white shirt.  Two attempts at conversation had ended mid-word and a wall of calculated indifference grew between them until the man cleared his throat and said something.

"What?  I'm sorry, I didn't understand."

"That is twice you have done that, said, 'please and thanks' to that boy."  That boy was their waiter and he looked like the picture of the man on a package of Cream of Wheat, without a chef's hat.  His waiter’s jacket could have been an advertisement for Stayley's, his smile was an ad for Pepsodent.  The seersucker suit attempted a withering glance and his words notched a notch deeper into the land of sorghum and grits.  He pronounced twice with a 't' on the end, twicet.

"You Yankees come down here and 'please and thank you' these colored folks and they get uppity."

This was the South?  A southern gentleman was giving a damnyankee, down here damnyankee is one word, a crash course in southern courtesies?  The wall between them doubled itself and the eyes of the Yankee and the Rebel met over the wall.  The Rebel blinked.  To hell with the southern gentleman, to hell with southern courtesy, and to hell with the southern hospitality in the dining car or in the club car on the L&M.  

He made it a point of replacing his quarter with a half dollar.

Craft, you shut up. You have got eight hours in this coach and things aren't going to get any better.  The little engine that could was doing its best to inch the Southern up into the Great Smokies.  Its click-clack became a click-pause-clack until it crossed the Applachain Trail. The shower that met him in Knoxville followed the string of ancient cars.  With the windows opened to the hint of the shower washed air, with his mind set in numb detent, and by riding in the vestibule with the upper half door open, the trip was almost pleasant.

After the little engine that could, finally did, and crossed the Trail it belched a few clouds of black smoke, kicked up dust and cinders and ran down into the cotton fields.  This was Gone With The Wind country with dirt roads, with one and two mule wagons, with hemp tow sacks heavy with picked cotton being dragged between the rows of stark white plants standing in the rich, black earth.  

A farm wagon, pulled by a pair of tired mules, waited at the crossing.  The faded mansion at the end of the dirt road, was that Tara?

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" Wasn't that what Rhett said at the end of Gone with the Wind?  Donald Craft didn't give a damn either.

By the time the Southern reached Sommersville the intermittent showers had turned into a soft rain.  He felt cruddy and beat.  The trip and the days from Apache Wells to Sommersville had been one hell of an experience.

Depending on how bad the new entries this week are (the entries in question are Mahoujin Guru Guru, Classroom of the Elite and Gamers), there may be a chance for this to go on hold (because that’s what I do to shows I can’t be certain about).

ANN said this was alright, so I’m using it to determine whether I should stick on with some of my boilerplate shows (specifically Hina Logi, which doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy inside despite its attempts at schoolgirl SoL, 7O3X, which is fun to play with but has fanservice and Youkai Apato, which is overall lacking).

Holy anime, Batman! This thing’s 24 minutes! (I kinda knew that from ANN categorising it as such, but that still had an element of surprise when I saw it on CR.)

The cutesy artstyle doesn’t suit this show. It would be better doing a Gugure! or OPM thing with switching between two styles (chibi and detailed).

Uh, subbers? Why is “Boering” “Jimina”???...Oh, okay. Jimina can mean a lot of different things when in different contexts, but it would mean “boring” in this context, so they went with a deliberate typo on “boring”. I see.

Sometimes, I felt like I should laugh, but didn’t because I genuinely couldn’t find a reason to, either, which is kinda rare for me when it comes to comedy. I can see why people like it though.

Ayanokouji is hard to read, but I can predict his thought process like we’re completely in sync (which I guess is meant to happen in a show like this). Horikita’s pretty expressionless too, meaning this comes off similar to Sagrada Reset – there’s potential, but the quality of the character writing is hard to determine.

I think Horikita suspects Kushida wants to hang off the dudes. Like something out of Legally Blonde.

Only a dude writer would make a girl mention her underwear so casually…*grumbles*

Since I read ANN prior to watching this ep, I knew the twist, but it was handled competently enough.

“Sapere aude” appeared during the ED. It means “dare to know”, and was first mentioned by Immanuel Kant. I learnt about it in politics, and heck, for a series that relies on lofty quotes like this, it does make sense to include it.

The words in the ED, if not Japanese, are German and Latin, along with a sentence or two of French and some English (because I spotted “…the root of evil”).

This style, that involves a lot of pink…I should’ve known is was Seiji Kishi and Lerche. It vaguely smacks of Ranpo Kitan!

I’m not sure what way this is going to go, but I can say I’m at least intrigued because there does seem to be some strong writing behind this. That means Hina Logi is going on hold.

Saiyuki Reload Blast 2

The gangster feel of this is great, y’know? The perfect way to kick back any day. (Unfortunately, if you want to know how I’m going on Gangsta, I still have it on hold…that was a lil’ subpar compared to what I wanted to cling to that season.)

Just out of interest… Well, here’s a better indication. That’s a pretty long road trip. However, the distance between Adelaide and Darwin (both Australian cities) is longer (3030.61 km or 1883.13 miles or 1636.4 nautical miles if measuring by driving distance on the same site as that second link), so…the Saiyuki guys have no right to complain.

“A salt lake…So a lake filled with salt water.” – You don’t say…I bet there’s a specialised term for that in Japanese, but still.

It’s funny how these guys use both magic and science. It’s something I’ve been trying to write ever since “The Future is Crimson”, because being able to combine both into a show smoothly indicates you’re a great writer (at least, in my opinion).

Like, enough with the camera blood splatter and “shooting through” the camera. Otherwise, I’m happy with this battle scene.

Seeing ancient China through a Japanese person’s eyes instead of through my parents’ Chinese version of jidaigeki-style live action dramas is…really something else. I think that’s one reason I’m so attached to this. (In case you’re wondering, yes. My parents watch a lot of old Chinese live action dramas. My dad especially is fond of things involving Mao Zedong or Deng Xiaoping if not those weird period dramas I just mentioned.)

They have credit cards in this period. That’s…hilarious! Then again, we’re talking about dudes with a dragon/jeep and a gun in what seems to be ancient China. Go, anime! (partially halfhearted) (shakes head knowingly*

The more the enemy lady (who appears to be Gyokumen) talks, the more I think of Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon and the more I get hit in the nostalgia. Ah, the 90s. Those were some good days of anime.

Gahhaha, the Sanzo party is full of debauchery, yet I can see why they’ve spawned so many anime seasons and specials.

The Sanzo party sound so unmotivated when they go, “Urasai”.

These extra things really ain’t funny, but…well, it’s almost like seeing an AU of these guys in the modern day. Including, and up to, watermelon smashing. An anime can’t go without at least one watermelon smashing scene if it’s got a beach episode...or it’s summer, which is just a big excuse to show a beach scenario anyway.

Update: After much thought, I regret to say that 7O3X and Youkai Apato are going on hold. The Reflection, which I intended to check out originally, will probably be out on the 29th while I still have Gamers! on tap next.

I know from experience that stomach-related sicknesses suck. When I first started taking swimming lessons I was an idiot with zero stamina who could barely swim halfway across the pool without coming up for air, so needless to say, I ended up gulping a ton of water (especially since my teacher didn’t go easy on me; mom told her not to because I’m a sloth and I usually won’t do any exercise on my own besides simple stretches and some walking/running). I mean, the water in swimming pools is usually a bit disgusting, and it’s even worse where I take lessons because it’s a pretty old place and I don’t think it gets cleaned that often… so not only did accidentally swallowing it trigger my clean-freak senses, I also ended up with a terrible stomachache. I thought it was fine, that it would pass. But then I got a fever and every other thing I ate made me feel like someone was twisting my intestines from the inside, I couldn’t even lie down and rest for a sec because whenever I moved or tried to change positions it got even worse ;p; (also my mom never let it go, she kept jokingly 'reminding’ me that water from a swimming pool is not something you should drink after I started swimming again. I guess I kinda deserved it, though. I was an idiot))

That sounds so lovely <3 I’d really love to go visit Norway myself sometime, though I’ll probably have to wait a few years (my mom has back problems that make it painful for her to stay in one position for too long, so long plane/car rides are a huge no). I would give anything to have you join me in Stoki hell so let me just recommend basically the entire Remember This Cold series (it’s angsty as heck so proceed with caution…there are bits of humor and fluff in there, though, and then some extremely rare (almost) pure fluff fics. Like the one where Steve wants to propose but is a nervous bean because Loki’s a PRINCE and he wants to make it perfect). YES ANOTHER T'CHALLA FAN I adore this guy (also I feel like he has a really cool voice. Not really sure why, it just sounds so nice). Forgot to mention this about Chrollo, but when Kurapika killed one of his troupe (a guy named Uvogin), Chrollo acted all cool and never really talked about Uvo…

but then he had the rest of the troupe murder 2000 mafiosi guarding a building they were trying to get into, and while watching the chaos from afar, listening to their enemy’s screams, he started waving his hands as if conducting an orchestra…

Idk how to feel about it. At first I thought it made her look like an old lady, but then, the more I look at it, the prettier it gets…like, it’s actually a really nice design, but I guess I got too used to manga!Francis lol)

Oh yeah, I get what you mean. Light’s reasoning/views on the justice system probably connects a lot to the culture and social issues of Japan at the time.

DN’s probably still one of the easier-to-adapt mangas out there, though, since the themes of justice and questioning the idea of 'greater good’ is something anyone can relate to (and they still botched it, I’m very salty about this and you can’t stop me ;-; even with how terrible Ryuk and Rem looked in them, the Japanese movies were WAY better, and it’s actually pretty rare that Japan makes a good live-action movie from a manga or anime. Apparently the TG movie that came out this year was pretty good too, though :D).

(I apparently somehow accidentally erased the part where I mentioned I actually read HCs/theories about Japanese-American Light on tumblr somewhere….that’s what got me thinking about it.

I agree though, seeing how different cultures would change Light’s character would be very interesting.)

I’m really, really sorry if this makes you uncomfortable, mom just worries a lot and she likes to hear about my friends (like, she worries for my safety on the internet so she has to ask me some basic things about the people I talk with, and when she knows I have a good friend on the internet she sometimes wants to hear if my relationship with them is ok). I’d never tell her something really private but sometimes she wants to talk and I know she worries for me so I do tell her small, random details from our convos.

I’m totally not crying.  I’ve said this so many times and you’re probably getting annoyed, but I have no idea what I did to deserve you in my life.  You’re actually the only person I’d told about my current mental state at that time, and I’m so glad you didn’t freak out or just write it away as me overreacting (like my mom did), and it means so so so much to me. Truly, thank you for being here for me. (And not giving up on me, considering how long my replies take ;-;)

Tbh considering the shit I unironically ship sometimes, no ship is weird enough to be unexplainable. Name a single reason why you ship it, and it’s valid in my eyes. Heck, it can be ‘they look good together’ and I’ll say ‘makes sense’. Y’know why? Because I’m one of those ppl who will ship it if they so much as look at each other.

ok fun fact: I’ve loved T’Challa since I was like 8, because every summer, there would be a weekly publication of superhero comics, and Black Panther was almost always there, and I was a nerd even then, so I’d always buy them. Other than Spiderman, Black Panther was my favourite superhero.

I adore the movie, seriously, the animators did such an amazing job with it, especially the most important scenes. BUT HECK; WHEN WILL WE FIND OUT WHAT OUR CIEL’S NAME IS?? It’s been hinted that it’s quite unusual, BUT THAT MAKES IT EVEN HARDER HNNNGH

Oh yeah, I’m gonna find that novel even if it kills me, because I need the L. 

lol I still haven’t forgiven the movie adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender. It was so bad that most people (including me are denying its existence). I might watch Death Note some time soon, so I can judge it for myself tbh... 

Of course, the chips were a vital part of the Keikaku... No wonder it didn’t succeed...
