You might look at the peryton on the left and think it looks like a 5 ft (1.5 m) tall deer-bird that wants to eat your heart. That's because it's an accurate statement, but look at that grin!
On the right, the Roper! A 9 ft (2.7 m) monster with 50 foot (15.2 m) tentacles strong enough to pull a full grown orc half that distance in seconds. It also gets 6 at a time, and can infinitely regrow them almost instantly.

me, drinking coffee for once: this is it, this is going to fix me. today I will have just enough of a functional brain to be productive and get important things done
the horrible little creature that lives in my brain and decides what I hyperfixate on and when I go into an infodumping trance on an arbitrary topic and also makes me wildly over- or under-use punctuation:
Tumblr media
#man fuck ADHD#can somebody diagnose me with 'holy shit how are you ALIVE without adderall'#for the record the horrible little creature that lives in my brain just stuck me in a 90 minute rant#about how 'Monstrosity' is a HORRIBLE creature type in dnd#it's so ABSURDLY wide ranging#there are 'Monstrosities' that should be BEASTS like the obvious Owlbear or Peryton or some specific cats and wolves#but there are also things like. horrible centipede monsters and Purple Wurms and disfigured Kraken monsters#AND ALSO CENTAURS AND MINOTAURS WHICH ARE EXPLICITLY PLAYABLE RACES????#as well as a NUMBER of creatures that could EASILY fall into the humanoid category#things that WEAR CLOTHING and use CRAFTED AND MAGICAL WEAPONS and have CULTURE and SPEAK MULTIPLE LANGUAGES#is a YETI less humanoid than a Bugbear or a Grung???#what about Draconian mages which are literally just dragonborn?#what about all the YUAN TI and THRI-KEEN which are literally viable PC races#what about Yakfolk priests and Merrow swordsmen and Driders which are no less humanoid than a Centaur#WHY ARE THEY LUMPED INTO THE SAME CATEGORY AS SPACE HAMSTERS AND WEIRD PARASITES AND GRIFFONS#THERE'S NO JUSTIFICATION FOR ALL OF THESE THINGS BEING A SINGLE CREATURE TYPE IT'S JUST PURE FANTASY RACISM#and also extremely lazy worldbuilding#why the fuck are PLAYABLE RACES lumped in with displacer beasts and mimics?#because you suck at categorizing your creature types that's why#in a fantasy world that has fantasy creatures there's no reason for an owlbear or a peryton or a griffon to not be considered animals#you know the Polymorph spell specifies beasts of your challenge rating (player level) or lower?#did you know the highest CR in the Beast type is 8?#T Rex Sperm Whale and Huge Giant Crab are all CR 8 beasts#so Polymorph can't scale past level 8. even though player levels go to 20.#meanwhile TRUE Polymorph and SHAPECHANGE just say any creature. Shapechange specifies not constructs or undead#and you know what. Wild Shape specifies BEASTS. with a MAXIMUM CHALLENGE RATING OF ONE.#unless you're a moon druid and then it's your level divided by 3#except they're removing that in 'One DND' (shut up it's just 6e)#anyway DND has some CRAZY fucked up stuff in it and Monstrosity is just 'Miscellaneous' but with more racism in it#also I have not been productive today at all thanks coffee

The Shattered Tower (102)
I am Playing ShadowDark with my kids, in the mini campaign setting of The Gloaming from Cursed Scroll #1.
Hex (102) “The Shattered Tower” has a short blurb about a ruined keep with a trap door leading to a cistern with something slithering in the murky waters.
Time to flesh this out:
The Thistlewood Keep is centuries gone, but a rumor remains of a priceless diadem, never recovered. The legend varies widely and no detail seems to remain the same from one re-telling to the next, save for one. The Princess of Thistlewood Keep, moments before destruction, took her family’s most cherished possession and hid it away. Though the enemy razed the keep, the treasure was never found! Much speculation has been made, and many a young adventurer has often dreamed of finding the treasure!
More recent generations have used the keep as a sort of initiation or hazing ritual, much like a snipe hunt. Young adventurers have often been sent by their older siblings to go find the treasure and prove their worth. After a trek of adventure, or boredom, the children are lucky to return with an odd button, or a piece of a broken plate from the keep.
And more recent still, a few months ago, there has been a report of a pair of monstrous birds nesting in upon the ruined tower. Their bodies are like giant eagles with the head of a mighty stag! Their talons and antlers are iron hard, and razor sharp! Hunters have warned all the townsfolk and all the children to avoid the area and STOP these hazing rites, for this monsters will most surely kill and eat anyone who disturbs it’s nest. There have been a few failed attempts to kill these monsters ending in the death of several hunters each time. For now, hunters are avoiding coming too near the area.
Tumblr media
Elsewhere in the Gloaming, a camp of Outlaws led by Grieves Redthorne. Recently, a group of goblin bandits attempted to waylay some of his men, but quickly surrendered and begged mercy, and to make it up to Redthorne and join his group. For this crime, the group was offered a quest to atone for their transgressions. “Bring back the Thistlewood Diadem!” The goblins, unaware of the monstrous birds made haste to appease this Grieves Redthorne, grateful for this uncharacteristic offer of mercy!
When my players arrive, there is a chance the perytons will be present at the nest, but I hope to get them into the cistern where they will meet the goblins. Sinred, the now leader of the goblin group will explain how they’re all surely doomed! Because the perytons have killed 2 of their group and won’t let them leave the cistern! And even now, lurking within the cistern, a giant snake which has eaten another of their group! Sinred will beg the PC’s for help, and even offer the treasure if the party helps them escape! Sinred claims that before Dink was swallowed whole, by the snake, he had clasped in his hands, a small treasure chest! Sinred and Urn, the remaining 2 goblins, were too afraid to fight the snake on their own, and after it’s meal, the snake slithered away and ignored them, as they did not attack it.
If my players defeat the snake, they will indeed find a goblin and a waterlogged chest containing the diadem. Sinred will attempt to betray the PC’s and steal back the diadem if given half a chance.
The perytons are a great threat to the PC’s at level 2. And I will give the PC’s ample warning to not stick around to fight them.
The PC’s will find another exit, a crack in the wall of the cistern, that will lead into a vast cave system. I have some tables ready with content from Veins of the Earth, and the ShadowDark core rules. I want to open up the idea of cave exploration, as we have not yet done this, and also have some possible shortcuts, throughout the Gloaming.

The winter wolf speaks 3 languages and has the same intelligence as your average orc or harpy. A good 5 out of 6 on the ol' furry scale, but still perfectly viable. Anyway, it's 4.5 ft (1.4 m) at the shoulder and 8 ft (2.4 m) long. Also has cold breath, so no worries about getting too hot!
You might look at the peryton on the right and think it looks like a 5 ft (1.5 m) tall deer-bird that wants to eat your heart. That's because it's an accurate statement, but look at that grin!

Do you have ideas of what the kwami's true forms(the mythical creatures they originally are)might be?
I thought of it a little bit, and probably need to do more searching around. WIkipedia does have a list of legendary creatures, but it doesn't cover everything.
But a few I have thought of:
I thought of Plagg being a chimera as it's a pretty iconic and dangerous mythical feline.
Tikki I thought of possible birds to play off ladybird. Phoenix was one of the first that came to mind, for it's red and fiery and tied to healing, though griffin is another possibility.
Trixx a nine tailed fox.
Pollen... maybe a bugbear. When I first heard it, I always thought it was a bug with bear elements, or something like that. Then I got to see what it was in DnD and got disappointed. You could've done something with mothfolk for a bugbear! That would've been so much more unique.
Anyway, if bugbear, probably something along the lines of what MLP did.
Tumblr media
A manticore is another solid option to work off the stinger, though I'd stick to a feline head than human. She could be a more tiger based manticore to work off the stripes.
Wayzz I'd vote to be a dragon turtle.
Tumblr media
For Duusu, he could be one of the few that's a big iconic mythical animal, as India does closely tied peafowl to gods. Alternatively, Duusu could be a simurgh.
Tumblr media
Could also do something with a peacock griffin.
Or a peacockatrice.
Nooroo I'd lean to be a big butterfly-moth being, as a nod to Mothra.
Tumblr media
And you know, as I can't really promise that canon's sentis will even be a thing, it may be the butterfly senimonster could be Nooroo's true form. He could even be the intro to the concept.
Tumblr media
Now outside the more iconic kwamis...
Tiger and lion kwami could be actual sibling guardian lions, only one is more striped. Or they could just be big divine animals of themselves.
Which is something I am leaning for Wolf as Fenrir is very iconic.
Kaalki would probably be a winged horse, as not only is there Pegasus, there is also longma, a draconic horse with wings.
Longg could be a long, or he could go more western dragon or wyvern.
Fish kwami probably a long.
Sass probably a naga.
Orikko probably a cockatrice.
Deer kwami either a peryton or qilin.
And the rest, I don't know yet.

Today's DnD Creature, The Chimera
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Editions appeared in: Chainmail, ODnD, DnD B/X, ADnD, ADnD 2e, DnD 3.5e, DnD 4e, & DnD 5e
Consistent Elements:
The Chimera is a winged amalgamation that infuses a lion, a goat, and a dragon into a single body with three heads.
Notable Differences:
From birds of a feather to bitter enemies. Originally, the Chimera in Chainmail was clumped in with other hybrid monsters, such as griffons, hippogriffs, and wyverns with few details. In DnD 5e, these creatures, along with dragons, manticores, and perytons, are considered rivals to each other.
Limited Draconic Speech. The chimera gains the limited ability to speak the language of red dragons in ADnD, though how limited this speech is remains unclear. In ADnD 2e, it is elaborated that chimeras are more likely to converse with more powerful creatures than itself, a trend that continues in DnD 3.5e where it speaks draconic rather than just the language of red dragons, though it may be likely to be more familiar with the speech of whichever dragon head it has than with others. In DnD 4e, it seems to know both common and draconic. In DnD 5e, the chimera is reduced to knowing draconic but being unable to speak it.
Chaotic Behavior. Not much is explained about the chimera’s behavioral patterns until ADnD 2e, where it can maintain a somewhat omnivorous diet due to its herbivore goat and carnivore lion and dragon heads. Though it’s made clear that the carnivores would only be satisfied with flesh. The lion and dragon heads also clash with one desiring to be in a pride and the other remaining in solitude in a cave respectively. No details of the chaotic nature is mentioned again until DnD 5e, where most of the chaos spawns from how each head is equally hostile, making it more of a threat to other creatures rather than be in conflict with itself.
Dark and no longer mysterious origins. The origins of how the chimera came to be remained unanswered for most editions, with ADnD 2e even stating it may be best to leave such things unanswered which implies a very dark truth. In DnD 5e however, the first chimeras were created by Demogorgon who took several creatures he was unimpressed with and infused them into the hybrid monsters we know, though how they don't know abyssal or aren't considered demons as a result is beyond me.
Moments of Ambushing. In ADnD 2e, DnD 3.5e, and DnD 5e, the chimera is noted to surprise its prey with swooping attacks from above. They mention its dragon head could use its breath attack as an alternative to biting. In ADnD 2e and DnD 3.5e, chimeras strike in concert if more than one chimera participates in the hunt. In DnD 5e, the chimera sprays the ground in flames as it swoops down before landing to attack.
Unfortunately for you… you are MANELESS. In most editions, the chimera was described or at least visually depicted with a mane for its lion head. Only in DnD 3.5e did the chimera lose its mane and was specifically described to be maneless. Not an important detail, just thought it was kinda funny.
Variant Dragon Heads. Throughout most editions, the chimera’s dragon head breathes fire. In DnD 3.5e, the game master is presented with a few options to swap the dragon head with any they wish, changing its breath weapon to the dragon head most appropriate with it, such as blue for lightning, green for poison, black for acid, and white for cold. In DnD 4e, the chimera has the standard stats for a fire-breathing red dragon one, but there is a note saying other variants exists. No details of these variants are mentioned in DnD 5e.
Unusual Mounts. In DnD 3.5e, there are unusual notes for the carrying capacity of a chimera, not dissimilar to notes given to mounts. In DnD 4e, it is explicitly stated that chimeras can be trained as guards or mounts. No details are given in other editions.
Expanded Territories. In ADnD 2e, chimeras were said to have territories of up to 20 square miles(which would be about ~5 miles wide). In DnD 5e, it was rephrased to have territories of up to 10 miles wide(which is about ~78 square miles).
Origins: In Greek Mythology, the Chimera was a unique creature that terrorized the countryside by eating cattle and spreading flames from its goat head. Bellerophon was able to slay it by riding Pegasus into the sky and pelting with arrows, which seems to imply it never had wings originally? [Wikipedia Article]
