Need a festive NPC for your game? You can use Jack Frost.
Tumblr media
Do you need a festive NPC for your game? You can use Jack Frost.
For the Player The urchin that stands before you is almost deathly pale, his hair so blonde it might as well be white. Looking to be of an age caught between the innocence of childhood and the disquiet of adolescence, his clear blue eyes have an ageless quality to them, where mischief and wisdom twinkle in equal measure. A chill surrounds the boy, who seems altogether untroubled by it, despite his threadbare clothes and bare feet.
For the DM Jack Frost may be a harbinger of winter, cold, and ice, but he's also a consummate prankster who brings in his wake the joys of ice-skating, the fun of snowball fights, and the beauty of frost crystals. As a result, his reputation among mortals is mixed, but his incarnation responds in equal measure to the way he is treated. With a short fuse and a distaste for metaphysical debates, Jack exists for the present moment with both grim purpose and childlike glee.

This is possibly my most ambitious map yet; a light warship based on Royal Navy brigs of the Napoleonic period. She is armed with twelve cannons, measures 95 feet with a beam of 25 feet, and carries a crew of up to 101 officers and sailors. A warship of this size should be suitable for a nautical campaign, as its shallow draft would allow it to venture places that heavier vessels wouldn't dare, and it carries just enough firepower to be troublesome but not overwhelming. This map comes in five layers; overhead view with the fighting tops and lower sails, forecastle and quarterdeck, gun deck, berth deck (which comes in day and night configurations for meals and sleeping), and a cargo hold (not pictured). This map is available on my patreon in full size PNG and VTT, without watermark, in grid/gridless & night/day variants.

Ossuary
Tumblr media
It’s over 9000!!! Bones, that is, meticulously arranged in this fascinating ossuary where the dead lie more or less peacefully. Amidst the the tombs of lords, ladies, and monarchs, hidden passageways conceal forgotten treasure, while a recent breach by hungry ghouls threatens the pristine state of this hallowed resting place! Inspired by a recent visit to the Paris Catacombs, this map serves as a chilling memento mori, and the perfect setting for your players’ morbid adventures.

You find an overturned wagon that hasn’t been fully robbed of its merchandise for some reason. Who could have done this?
You’re traveling to the capital in hopes of finding better paying work there. At one point you find an overturned wagon. You examine the remains of what must have been a small, one-person caravan. The former owner, a merchant, is lying in the bushes – dead. The horse must have escaped. But the realization that the wagon has not been robbed of all goods makes you wonder – who or what attacked this man, and why?
You don’t have to wait long to figure out the answer as you suddenly hear noises coming from the bushes on the left side of the road. You prepare your weapons and magic just in time as a bunch of goblins spring out at your party, armed with spears and short bows. The green-skinned monsters seem to have decided to use the caravan to lure in concerned passersby so they can rob them of even more goods.
However, now that you’re the ones under attack, the goblins’ luck has run out. You’re skilled in the art of adventuring and eliminating monsters, so you make quick work of the noisy enemies. The poor merchant should have known better than to travel alone. This incident is not the first time you have witnessed a caravan that has fallen prey to monsters or bandits, and you suspect it won’t be the last one either.

Adventure Hooks
On your way to the capital you find an upturned wagon with merchandise still lying around. As you wonder who would attack the merchant but fail to didn’t steal all of the items, you are ambushed by a group of goblins. Hopefully, disposing of the enemies will be quick work for skilled adventurers such as yourselves.
You are tasked by the Merchant Guild with finding out why a merchant has not yet made it to Thorwood with the items that the general store requested. You follow the man’s route to that town only to find him dead and his wagon lying on the side. It seems the man suffered a bear attack, as the footprints suggest. You can’t leave the animal to prey on any other caravans, so you decide to venture into the forest to hunt the beast.
You witness a group of bandits attacking a caravan on the road to Thorwood. Before you manage to spring into action against them, they turn the wagon over to act as cover as they shoot arrows at you. But you’re a party of skilled adventurers, so you won’t have a problem getting rid of the enemy, right?

Crit Role Miniature Rollout: C3E48 An Exit Most Fraught (no minis episode)
With Andrew Harshman
An archive and analysis of the minis used on CR.
Tumblr media
Hello party people! Apologies for the unannounced hiatus.
I have been neglecting my mini-duties. Wargaming has been getting more of my attention as of late and frankly, the party split in recent CR episodes really took me out of it. Personally, the format/plot shift did not work for me. But anyway-
I’ll be using a modified format for a bit. Skipping the full archive and jumping straight to my picks for best and worst mini of the episode for sessions with combat and maps.
Speaking of maps, got this question submission quite awhile back.
Tumblr media
Anonymous asked:
Hello! Would you happen to know what size are the mats that Matt uses?
Tumblr media
Interesting question! Thanks for your question. So the map size of course varies from episode to episode and changes depending on whether they are using a literal battle mat flat map as the base of the layout or if they are using a fully 3D modular Dwarven Forge map. That being said, a great many of the Critical Role combat maps are 24 inches by 24 inches as seen in the above examples.
24x24 is the standard starter size of the gaming mats printed by the good folks at Mats by Mars, so we end up seeing quite a lot of them on CR. And they are always a most welcome sight indeed. Their mats are fantastic.
Of course Mats by Mars also does large scale custom work, such as the GLORIOUS custom Cognouza Mat of Campaign 2:

Harp's Run is prosaic, a home to a handful of families and simple, hard-working folk from the country's heartland. Horses roam free to the East, near the wood, farm animals bah and oink from nearby pens. The only time travelers stop by this sleepy town is on the occasion they need to stop by Clemp's general store to restock on supplies. What could ever go wrong?

Do you need an NPC for your game? You can use Minëlla the Elf Princess.
Tumblr media
For the Player: There is a hardness beneath the graceful female elf’s wan smile, an aloofness as she regards you coolly. Though her simple and practical garments very closely resemble her peers’, a few delicate ornaments of gold filigree, fine silk, and a circlet mark her superior station. For the Dungeon Master Minëlla is the granddaughter of Finrandir the Ageless, and serves as her forebear’s most trusted advisor and counsellor. It has been decades since any foreigner in these lands have been granted an audience with Finrandir himself. By his wishes, Minëlla handles all interactions with outsiders, which she does fairly but always with the best interests of her people as a priority.

The old empire's works still testify to its engineering prowess. The continent is still littered with monuments, ruins, and decaying infrastructure. This aqueduct once diverted water from a river and carried it across hundreds of miles of semi-arid landscape towards bustling population centers and fertile fields. Now, after long centuries without repair or maintenance, the support columns bridging this valley have finally collapsed. The river - freed of its long confines - now digs its own path to the sea and creates an abundance of greenery along its banks. What might come to dwell at this accidental oasis?

Police Station and Morgue
Tumblr media
This is a police station and morgue. The upper floor has a reception area, four clean jail cells for holding prisoners, a magical interrogation room, and lots of desk space for officers to carry on their investigations, or do all their paperwork.
The lower floor has the paperwork archive for past cases, as well as an evidence room, a meeting room, and a morgue where bodies are held and examined for cause of death or corpses are reanimated to be questioned regarding cases.
