Forever in our hearts. On this day in 1967, Dominic Lucero was born! Of course we remember him as Bumlets in Newsies 1992 (that fan spin!) as well as Roundhouse on Nickelodeon after that (with fellow newsies Mark David, David Sidoni, & Ivan Dudynsky!)

Dominic was a talented dancer who worked with Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, and more, including fellow newsie Kevin Stea

Happy birthday, Dominic! You are missed.

Yes!! That’s Bumlets, he’s played by Dominic Lucero (who died in 1994 from Lymphatic cancer. Kenny Ortega will often refer to Dominic as “our angel”)

He’s also the one who does the fan spin in King of New York!

He’s known for his dance moves (he’s always one of the best dancers in any given scene), that stick he carries around, and having the BEST hair of all time.

I’ve taken this opportunity to dump some of the old art I have saved for Bumlets. Admittedly a lot of this stuff comes from old newsies fan sites that are down now.

Bumlets and Skittery but in each season, like what would they do during fall, spring, winter, and summer (either modern or cannon)

I have so many thoughts, but we’re going to try and put them in order. that being said- it’s june, so we’re going to go out of order and start with summer.

fun fact about new york: when it’s hot, it’s hot. the sun’s up, there’s minimal shade, the sidewalk’s hot, everything is awful. another fun fact, but about skittery this time: my man burns like nobody’s business. he becomes a tomato. his boyfriend is less prone to similarities of a specific red fruit, but he’s also one of those people who seems to not need sunscreen (which- no. just no. I don’t care how much melanin you possess or where you can trace your family to. skin cancer. SKIN CANCER. put on the damn sunscreen.) so picture skittery, who practically bathes in sunscreen, chasing bumlets around with a godDAMMIT YOU BRAT PUT THE FUCKING SUNSCREEN ON and bumlets literally sprinting away shouting NOOOOO and hissing like a cat.

fall is skittery’s favorite time of year. it’s not too hot, not devastatingly cold. he makes sure to do ALL of the activities. pumpkin patches, apple orchards, halloween. not because he particularly likes the activities, but because it’s the only season he likes, dammit, and he’s going to force himself to enjoy it. bumlets thinks he’s an idiot, but they go on a lot of picnics, so he keeps his insults to a minimum.

winter is hell on earth for them. skittery always, ALWAYS manages to get some sort of cold by march, and he sounds awful even when he doesn’t have one. bumlets is of the opinion that the cold is stupid, and “IF GOD WANTED ME TO BE COLD, THEN HE WOULD’VE PUT MY ANCESTORS IN. THE. FUCKING. COLD.” (-words said by at least three of my own latino friends). they mostly just stay inside and eat an obscene amount of desserts.

spring is okay. bumlets had sniper teach him how to make flower crowns, so he makes at least one every year for skittery to wear (who, in return, pretends that he’s not going to wear it and then wears it for the rest of the day). skittery hates the slushiness of the half-melted snow that always seems to be on the streets, but he likes being able to walk around in a sweatshirt and not worry about freezing to death.

(bumlets’ favorite time of year is summer, by the way. it’s just sometimes overshadowed by his protective boyfriend bearing gifts of lotion and spray bottles.)

WHAT DO BUMLETS AND SKITTERY DO WHEN EACH OTHER IS SICK

I want you to know that my first answer to this was literally going to be panic and nothing else, but I decided against that. 

so here’s an actual answer-

bumlets doesn’t get sick that often, so he’s normally stuck taking care of skittery, who’s just more irritated when sick (imagine that). his first reaction is always: food? food? you want food? okay, how about some more??

he’ll make soups, and beans, and more soup, and more beans. he’s not the best cook, and can’t really make more than soup or beans, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

(skittery’s a little tired of soup and beans, but he values his life, so nothing is said on that matter)

skittery is the embodiment of my first answer- panic. because yOU WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO GET SICK and I’M THE SICK ONE, ASSHOLE. what is he supposed to do when michael gets sick???? huh?? make him soup and beans?? check his temperature?? call a doctor?? make him take medicine?? how is he supposed to do any of that?????????

(he normally ends up calling davey, because when all else fails, try david jacobs. and then katherine plumber, because sometimes david jacobs is wrong, but katherine plumber never is.)

also, skittery is very much a germaphobe when bumlets is sick. michael won’t even give it a second thought, will hug and kiss his boyfriend when he’s hacking and wheezing, but when it’s the other way around? no sir. no dice. skittery is three steps behind bumlets (three for his health and safety, thanks), carefully wiping down every surface touched and sanitizing everything. he throws away tissues and empty water bottles with one of those extendable clamps while wearing gloves and goggles. 

bumlets always makes sure to hug and kiss him more than necessary afterwards just to see the little still-kind-of-worried scrunch his nose makes.

Maroons Look to Clinch Top Seed as First Round Nears Completion

OCTOBER 19, 2022 - The UP Fighting Maroons’ title defense is off to a tremendous start. As the first round of the tournament nears its close, they are tied with the NU Bulldogs for the top seed, each team having 5 wins and 1 loss. Suffice it to say, UP’s season so far has been nothing short of thrilling, so let’s turn back the clock and review some of the matches that led to the team’s success.

Their season debut against the De La Salle Green Archers on October 1 was an action-packed opening game as the Archers came out with their guns– or bows, blazing. Despite trailing in all but one quarter, the defending champs of Diliman did not falter as Mythical 5 big man Carl Tamayo, this game’s star, put up a monstrous 18-point 19-rebound performance capped by some big shots down the stretch to secure the win. Also with a commendable performance was Terrence Fortea who was handed the keys to starting point guard in JD Cagulangan’s absence. Fortea led the game in assists with 9 while also cashing in 15 points and 5 boards. La Salle’s fast-paced playstyle led by Schonny Winston caught the Maroons off guard, but a few defensive adjustments from Coach Goldwin Monteverde allowed UP to recover and secure the win 72-69.

UP’s succeeding game against the Adamson Falcons on October 5 was won in comeback fashion as well, as the Maroons had the last laugh despite trailing by double digits. Similar to La Salle, the Falcons’ offense in the first half was firing on all cylinders, and they entered halftime with a 16-point lead. Fortunately, the never-say-die attitude of UP was not shaken, and they quickly recovered in the third to cut the lead to 4. The Maroons were about to close out the game with a 3-point lead, but a questionable foul called on James Spencer led to free throws for the Falcons, which forced overtime. Nevertheless, UP’s grace-under-pressure mantra prevailed, and they dominated the overtime period with 13 points despite the absence of Carl Tamayo late in this game. Zavier Lucero’s 15 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists led him to be named player of the game in this 87-78 overtime victory.

Next was their match against FEU on October 8 which extended their win streak to 3 with a 73-67 victory. UP controlled the early game and slowly built up a lead of 14 in the first. The Tamaraws then answered back in the second and third to somewhat even the odds and decrease the deficit, but UP’s experience in crunch time gave them the edge in the fourth. Carl Tamayo by himself outscored the 7 points that FEU put up in the final quarter, and UP ended the game with 4 of their players scoring double digits. The Maroons’ defense once again shined bright as the Tamaraws shot a measly 5-of-27 from long range. Terrence Fortea, who put up a career-performance of 17 with 5 treys was this games’ star, and he was also named UAAP 85’s first player of the week thanks to his impressive consistency and his pivotal role in UP’s win streak as their starting point guard.

Possibly the most anticipated game of the first round, UP emerged victorious in the finals rematch against the Ateneo Blue Eagles with a 76-71 overtime win on October 16. The initial quarters were riddled with lead changes and deadlocks, and no team was able to pull away because their opponent immediately answered back. Halfway into the fourth, UP went on a run which extended their lead to 8 nearing the end of the quarter. However, Ateneo showed no quit, and quick baskets from Padrigao and Ildefonso cut the deficit and closed regulation at 64-64, forcing overtime. The overtime period was chock-full of free throws, which UP successfully capitalized on. Padrigao hit a three with 30 seconds left on the clock to make it a one-possession game, but trips to the line by Tamayo and Diouf iced the match with a 5-point victory. Tamayo’s impressive tally of 20, 13, and 3 dimes was enough for him to be named player of the game. JD Cagulangan also made his season return in this game, and his impact was immediately felt thanks to his 7 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, and 4 steals. The trio of Diouf, Lucero, and Spencer all put up double digit points each to help remind everyone who the true Kings of Katipunan are.

Finally, the back-to-back victory against UE marked the 5-win tally for UP with a score of 84-77. The Maroons hit the ground running and quickly secured a 9-point lead in the first. UE did however push back and catch up to keep the game close all throughout the second and third thanks to runs from Payawal and Paranada who finished the game with 21 and 20, respectively. In the fourth, the second unit of UP shined thanks to quick buckets and defensive plays from Calimag, Abadiano, and Gonzales. A three-point play from Lucero extended UP’s lead to 10 with just under a minute left. UE was able to cut down the lead to 4 thanks to back-to-back threes, but their remaining efforts were futile and the Maroons sealed the game with free throws from Harold Alarcon. Terrence Fortea with 13 was named the game’s star, but the true key to victory was UP’s bench depth. 12 of their 13-man roster contributed points to the tally, and second-unit players like Abadiano and Gonzales had great performances as well. Unfortunately, Carl Tamayo tweaked his ankle in the last minute of the game and exited the floor clutching his foot. His recovery timetable is unknown.

Bumlets thoughts! The boy was spinning today and my friend told me I should share my thoughts so here we go :) So, Bumlets, one of the background newsies of the 92 movies that was cast for his dancing talent (did you know Dominic Lucero was a background dancer for Michael Jackson, Paul Abdual and Madonna?) and doesn't get to say much, but he for sure has fabulous hair.

He is also named after an actual resident in the Duane Street Lodging house around the time of the strike (there is an entire article I once found on Tumblr and when I find it again I'll try to reblog it) and there it is mentioned he kind of speaks for the other newsies there and is called "The King of the Bums" which is very cool to me I do remember that article being a bit before 1899 so I had some thoughts... What if before Jack came along and became leader not just inside the lodging house but outside to the other boroughs, Bumlets was the one to speak for the matters of the newsies in the lodge, specifically for Kloppman. In turn Kloppman trusts him with locking up the lodge sometimes (I saw that in the fic: "Inside the Lodging House: Hard Truths and Annoying sounds" today and loved it) and if there is a problem with one of the boys he asks if he could talk to him first (as most don't react well to adults as it is). At some point Francis Sullivan, newly named Jack Kelly comes along and is more outwardly a leader, kind of more agressively a leader where Bumlets was usually quiet, polite and not particularly ambitious, he just wanted to help if he could and if someone else wants to be the actual leader he is fine with that too.

Another thing is he has leather suspenders (which you can see in Seize the Day reprise as he is right in the front) which for me means he is putting thought into his appearance and also into buying durable things (here we have a saying roughly translating to "better buy something good than buy twice", so saying you should rather buy expensive long-living things sometimes) even if he's not wearing the fanciest clothes apart from it they still seem well maintained and that just is something you notice. The buyers probably do that too.

Can't forget his boyfriends either (that here is just who I think he would be cute with) which would be Skittery and Swifty <3 He and Skittery stickfight in Carrying the Banner (which looks so fun), then they stand next to each other at the Rally and for Swifty in the scene where Snyder is looking for Jack in the lodge they are always beside each other and there are probably more scenes but those are just the ones coming to mind and me and my friend have been going feral over them. But I think that's better for another post eventually, just wanted to add it!

Another fun fact: Dominic Lucero was in fact the same age as Max Casella and therefore also 25 in 1992. Live with that knowledge folks.
