Tamara De Lempicka muore nella notte del 18 marzo 1980, stroncata da difficoltà respiratorie: avrebbe dovuto dormire con la maschera dell’ossigeno, ma la trovano senza. Il 27 marzo una Messa è celebrata nella cattedrale, e poi sua figlia Kizette sale su un elicottero. È una giornata ventosa, con difficoltà viene raggiunto il fianco del vulcano e le ceneri vengono sparse sul Popocatepetl, secondo i suoi desideri. Subito dopo la sua morte viene pubblicato a Tokyo il volume Tamara de Lempicka, con il testo di Germaine Bazin: è la prima pubblicazione scientifica sulla sua opera, ma non l’ha mai vista.
