shin and noi:

She's taller and stronger than him and that's so sexy They literally kiss several times, are each other's most important person, are contractual partners, he gets flustered seeing her naked, she even carries him bridal style at one point. Shin gets the strap for sure Shin and Noi are best friends and partners in crime. Early on, Noi gave up her chance at demonhood (lot of power) to protect Shin, and they remain close friends later in the story. Many of their interactions have romantic subtext that never goes anywhere. Noi flirts with Shin, and Shin often gets flustered about it. They share many charged moments. In the manga there's a line about how their interactions are due to endorphins making people mistake high-stress situations for feelings of attraction. It's an interesting dynamic even if it doesn't get in. are they in love? Is the author just fucking with us? what does noi stripping all the time mean? what does shin getting so flustered supposed to me? we never got answers, dammit!

nathalie and gabriel:

There’s literally a scene where he puts his wedding ring on her finger and tells her to protect his son and the family name and also she’s canon in love with him but they don’t get together and actually she ends up trying to kill him (he deserved it). She’s canonically in love with him (and possibly his late wife). He panics and abandons his plan when she collapses and he carried her to bed (bc sick) multiple times. His son assumed they were together. He puts on her hand his wedding ring/son manipulater (… yeah) in the manner of a wedding. She risks her life to help him save his wife. She tries to shoot him with a crossbow (hot) when she realized he went villain crazy (which is sosososo good for me as a tragic love enjoyer). He sacrifices his life to save her (after she risked her life to help him!!) His son ships it all of it. well actually there’s a lot of build up and they both end up kind of dying before it can come to anything they aren’t like permadead but it’s very bury your straights coded also gabriel has like a dead wife. and nathalie knows her too and the series is actually kind of hinting that maybe nathalie was in lesbians with her??? despite the fact that they have been hinting at romantic chemistry with gabriel since the dawn of time. it’s a little indescribable. gabriel girlfailure of the century if walter and skyler white were straightbait

The most realistic part abt Dorohedoro to me IS how the world is fucking horrible and everyone just accepts that, people want change but like they dont do it.

At the end of the story everything in the world stays the same because even if the people in power has changed theyve lived on that system all their lifes so they dont know anything else.

Kaiman's story is the main part and when it ends the story ends, but the world stays the same, and thats something i really like.

the world is horrible and theres so little change you could do but you can still find happiness and fullfilment here

i've seen a lot of people mention how dorohedoro explores class through its magic system, but i really think dorohedoro could be interpreted as a very thorough exploration of capitalism and how it affects basically every single aspect of society. (spoilers through the end of the manga under the cut.)

in dorohedoro, capitalism is artificially created through chidaruma's meddling. in creating the sorcerers and allowing them to mistreat humans, chidaruma creates 'capitalism' (aka class inequality, leading to class struggle) in dorohedoro's world. this eventually leads to the creation of hole as an entity, representing the personification of class struggle.

smoke, defined by personality and determining someone's abilities, is a form of capital, both a type of currency and a status symbol. not only is a sorcerer's position determined by how much smoke they can create, but the actual function and 'usefulness' (aka 'power') of the smoke is important as well. those without smoke - both humans and weak sorcerers - are opressed.

there are also powerful sorcerers w certain 'unique' abilities like risu and natsuki who cannot conform to these normative expectations due to the nature of their magic, showing that regardless of how 'powerful' an individual actually is, their performance and adherence to norms is what's considered most important; since they cannot conform, then they are considered failures.

en represents success in capitalism; he is a powerful sorcerer, with a useful ability at a high level of mastery, and he can produce a ton of smoke. not only that, but he literally runs a mega corporation! there are jokes throughout the manga of en's unethical and exploitative practices.

but just because he himself is successful and runs a successful business, doesn't mean that any of 'his family' - and by extension en himself - are 'safe' from the dangers of capitalism; he is simply in less immediate danger than everyone else!

en is revived - allowing the rest of the family to survive - because of fujita, ebisu, and sho: the three family members most frequently deemed 'weak' or 'useless.' sho's magic enables fujita to retrieve en's devil tumor for revival, and sho saves the rest of the family from being dissolved by hole. fujita's 'meek loser' demeanor is what allows him to effectively spy on the cross-eyes, retrieve the devil tumor, and negotiate with tetsujo. ebisu's relationship w kikurage and quick thinking allows her to to enlist dokuga's help to transport en's corpse, completing the revival plotline. and this is not to diminish everyone else's contributions, but to note that especially fujita and ebisu are able to help save the family because of the skills they have developed outisde of magic to survive in a world that does not value them. en's, the family's, and capitalism's survival is reliant on those they deem 'useless'; capitalism's survival is reliant on the labor of marginalized and exploited workers.

dorohedoro's cast is filled with characters who are outcasts and don't 'fit in' with societal expectations, and as the story continues, relationships between humans, sorcerers, and those 'in-between' become even more prominent. despite everything - the hardships, the resentment, the difficult histories everyone has - dorohedoro goes out of its way to consistently affirm friendship and solidarity between sorcerers and humans, regardless of the expectations that society has for them and the roles they're 'expected' to play.

dorohedoro does not have an ending that 'solves inequality' - massive social change can't happen overnight. dorehedoro DOES have a hopeful ending, though. it reaffirms that progress is possible. that in a chaotic, unpredictable, unfair world, there is still peace, friendship, and gyoza - we just need to find it and work for it together.

The Ascended

Those who have achieved divinity and ascended to godhood. These beings are effectively immortal, they are ageless but can be killed. However many have measures in place to prevent this being a simple endeavor.

To become a god one needs to pursue one of the several paths outlined below and obtain a Crown. When one manifests, takes, or forges a Crown, they receive a new divine epithet seemingly bestowed by the fabric of the universe or Cthonia.

Methods of Ascension

Cultivation: A method of extending one’s lifespan through practice of esoteric mystical and martial arts. Many wizards and battle-sages are on this path. It is the most common method pursued, though has the smallest success rate due to the sheer amount of time needed to ascend this way. The objective of this path is to create a Crown from one’s own life force and establish dominion over some aspect of the world, making it an outward expression of one’s will upon reality.

Deicide: Another way to achieve godhood is to “simply” kill a god. This creates what is known as a Godfall, where the god’s Crown fractures and unleashes their cultivated magic and divine life force. The killer is often able to grab the lion’s share of the power for themselves, however this method is predictably chaotic and so some fragments will disperse far away or end up grabbed by others nearby, intentionally or not. Those who achieve godhood through this method are often slightly weaker than those who do so on their own, but they can grow stronger through killing more gods.

Ritual Sacrifice: It is also possible to craft a Crown by using the life energy of others as fuel, though the numbers required are massive. These rituals are outlined in arcane Tomes of Sacrifice that are often locked away within vaults by powerful sorcerers or gods, or found deep within ancient temples and ruins. They seem to fade in and out of existence and only work for those “destined” to use them, outlining a specific path for the individual that opens them. Some believe these tomes are created by the dead entity whose corpse makes up the world.
