Dow Leads Stocks, Bitcoin Slumps, JPY Tumbles: Market Summary

The Dow 30 led the stock market with a gain of 0.43% 📈. The US Treasury sold $37 billion of 10-year notes with a high yield of 4.296% 💵. A survey from the New York Fed showed that year-ahead inflation is expected to be 3.4%, down from 3.6% previously 📊. It was a mixed day for the US debt market despite lukewarm treasury auctions in the three and 10-year maturity sector.

The Japanese yen (JPY) tumbled against major currencies as the Bank of Japan dispelled rumors of a rate hike 📉. This caused the JPY to drop sharply, losing -0.86% against the USD and -1.02% against the GBP. The USD remained relatively unchanged against other major currencies, with the upcoming central bank decisions and comments from central bankers keeping its movements in check.

In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin slumped, trading at $41,143 📉. The digital currency experienced a sharp decline from its high of $44,729 last Friday. Meanwhile, the stock market closed higher with the Dow stocks leading the gains. Intel was the top gainer among the Dow 30, rising by 4.31% 🚀.

It will be an eventful week as the Federal Reserve, Swiss National Bank, Bank of England, and ECB will all announce their interest rate decisions. Market overview:

The trade conflict between the two largest economies in the world has rattled the stock market worldwide and injected a negative sentiment among investors and traders. The market has been touching the highs and lows, but mostly it is trading sideways. All the benchmark indices were trading down during the close.

Can DOW make a comeback?

A 400 point decline is the worst day for the DOW index. The additional tariffs added on goods is heating up the market even more. Investors are not making many investments amid the uncertainties. The futures of the index are trading high and we can expect a comeback at the market open. Will the bullish trend beat the negative market sentiment?

NASDAQ on the edge

The tech-heavy Nasdaq is seen to trade down whereas MU, a component stock, defeated the market sentiment and was up by 0.38%. Micron is expected to report earnings today after the market close and caught the attention of many investors. Micron has exceeded the expectations and gained around 45% in since February.

S&P500 might outperform

Even though S&P500 was marginally up on Monday but they failed to hold on to the positive trend. The index took a dive and is down by 0.60% on a weekly basis. The SMA50 is crossing the SMA100 and going higher. Even though the index is indicating a bullish run, the uncertainties regarding trade war and issues in the middle east regarding oil are manipulating the minds of investors.

OPEC meeting

The meeting spree is not over as another major meeting of OPEC is expected to be held tomorrow. Iran's decrease in oil production disturbed the Oil market and their oil minister expects that there will not be any agreement. OPEC's allies have agreed to curb the production cuts. The energy sector was trading down by 0.27% and this meeting will be important for oil producers as they are expected to increase production.

Fed decision expected to drive Financial  market:

Investors remained calm about rising prospects of a global trade war following a weekend summit meeting of G7 leaders that ended on an astoundingly bitter note. 

Ahead of this week:

The week ahead brings a summit meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday in Singapore. Meeting of Federal Reserve policymakers on Wednesday to deliver a quarter-point rate increase in the fed-funds rate, and on Thursday meeting of the European Central Bank that could result in a timetable for eventually weaving down its monthly bond-buying program. 

Current scenario :

Looking forward investors aren't showing so much concern on the trade war and recent Washington and Pyongyang meeting.  Investors are paying more attention to underlying data that point to a strengthening U.S. economy.

It appears the market has immunized itself to some degree from trade headlines.

The Fed meeting, however, may deliver some red meat to investors. The Federal Reserve will raise its short-term target rate while trying to keep markets calm by signalling future interest-rate hikes will come at a “slow” pace. The market has already priced in a decision by the Fed to raise the target range 2%. This will be the second rate hike this year. Markets will be focusing on the central bankers updated “dot-plot” projections for interest rates this week also. The interest-rate decision will come at 2 p.m on Wednesday after two days of talks.  Investors are thus trying to line up with the Fed’s views. Fed decision expected to drive bond market, which will affect on the financial market.

US Stock Market - Weekly Wrap-up

Nasdaq and S&P500 were marginally up in the last trading days whereas DOW had a day high of 24308 points but closed the day 100 points lower up by 0.41%. The sectors made a major comeback yesterday and all the sectors were trading up except Energy and Utilities which took a slight downfall. The trade war has faded in the recent times but the tech stocks and financial sector took a huge blow and tumbled in the last few days.
