it was the "chasing after your past self (who loves you and wants to encourage you and ease all your fears) through an amusement park while your future self (who hates you and spends every second disparaging and tormenting you) follows close behind" sequence. two seconds into that and i knew i was doomed

ive been rotating an au in my mind where show utena remembers being friends with touga (like in the movie) at the beginning of the series and like recognizes him and she's like. "Oh its touga my old friend touga who i drifted apart from after the near-drowning incident for reasons ive never been able to articulate to myself." Nothing really changes in terms of actual show events, Touga is still a dick and asserts himself romantically at her bc he doesn't think women and men can be friends anymore, but in terms of character dynamics its less of Utena being manipulated into thinking a guy she barely knows could be her prince and more her reassessing why she stopped thinking of Touga that way in her childhood, and struggling to reconnect with him through the bullshittery of the duels and Touga's own manipulative behavior.

#it would make the end of touga arc 5million times more heartbreaking also. to me personally #you ahve to understand the way i reconcile the movie events in my head with the fact that touga is still alive #is like. i think he nearly drowned but survived. but for utena it was like his death because it was the end of her seeing him as a prince #like his self-sacrificial act wasn't princely and beautiful it was scary and upsetting and pointless #and it broke an illusion for her that was already being worn down by touga's gradually changing behavior #(bc of background abuse she was not privy to)#it also was the end of something similar for touga too. kind of like the last time he tried to act princely in a genuine way #and i think shortly after that he met akio #it parallels dios ok????????????????? you get me #rgu #touga kiryuu #utena tenjou

It’s been a hot minute since I read the S&S chapters so forgive me if I’m getting some details wrong but I believe there’s a way to look at the S&S fight without labeling it as an unnecessary fight

It’s about how S&S was inspired by All Might, much like Izuku. However, S&S is a kind of justice that’s ignorant, that uses excessive force to win a fight, that believes what she is doing is in the best of interests but refuses to see it any other way

It’s like. It’s a fight with only one ending, between two/three stubborn enemies

One who believes what she is doing is the only right way but actively goes out of her way to kill the enemy no matter what, one who will stop at nothing to get whatever he wants and controls his victim’s mind and body (takes away his autonomy to the point where they aren’t “separate people” but instead “one person”), and one who is a victim in all of this but wholeheartedly believes he was always bad and so has his heart set on destruction despite the fact that, deep down, he wants to be saved

It’s sad because if S&S had taken All Might’s influence and HADN’T turned it into a whole Strength thing, if she was someone like Izuku who saw All Might’s influence and learned that incredible power should be used to save, not to kill, then she probably could have stopped TomurAFO, captured him and taken him to All Might or something

I believe the point of S&S, one of the points at least, is that if you solely view All Might’s existence as a power fantasy, then you’re getting nowhere and completely missing what it means to be a hero

Look at it this way - S&S’ role in the manga was just to rule out one route the story could have taken

Anybody looking at TomurAFO and thinking “If All Might were in his prime form, HE could have taken him out and the world would be saved!” is then faced with a character who was inspired a lot by All Might and gives off the impression that they can do anything (COUGH confident intimidating appearance COUGH a quirk that allows the user incredible power COUGH)

She then serves her purpose by cutting AFO’s quirks down by half, showing that not everybody inspired by All Might does the right thing and shows the audience that Tomura immediately thought about Izuku when “someone who will inherit the will of heroism” is mentioned

Yes, while someone like All Might may be able to go head to head with TomurAFO and do some real damage, the point ISN’T that TomurAFO needs to be defeated and killed

The point is that TomurAFO is a fusion of an abuser and his victim, and anybody who NEEDS help should be given that help no matter what

S&S, someone similar to All Might who COULD have killed TomurAFO and prevented destruction, someone who saw his death as the only way to end this, is taken out of the running

Enter: Izuku Midoriya

You know, the one Tenko thought of at the mention “inheriting the will of heroism”

Idk I just. I can’t see the S&S chapters as pointless. They serve their purpose by letting the reader know that force and death is not the way out of this, that it’s not the story this manga is trying to tell

#also buff woman fanservice but we been knew #hori isn't subtle #BUT ALSO #if you're looking at it from an analysis pov #it does have its purpose #and if you're like 'but metty it was already super clear that death wasn't the way out of this-'#i can ASSURE YOU that there were people then - and people even now - who have not gotten the memo #bnha #bnha manga spoilers #i really need people to see that some stuff in this manga that's labelled as unnecessary or pointless #is really just... ruling out options the reader may think of #all might in his prime - excessive force - 'death is the only way out of this' etc #it just so happens that s&s encompasses all those 3 #also its basically people saying 'but what if-' and hori shutting those ideas down by saying 'no. can't. see? nothing changed #except tomura's hatred grew. the only way this ends is with saving and understanding and acceptance :)'#bnha spoilers #stars and stripes #tomura shigaraki #mettys posts #metty posts

#not only would it destroy the message of hope and perseverance in the face of personal struggles- the message that’s been a consistent #thread through all four seasons- it would make max’s first “death” scene incredibly pointless when it could have been #so impactful had it been real #obviously i very much want max alive and healthy and happy but there’s something so cinematic and so awe-inspiring about that #shot of max in lucas’ arms with el by her side and the blue light bouncing off their blood-and-tear-soaked faces #before the camera draws back and begins to spin over them... anyway. my point is:#i will be very angry if they end up killing max via coma when they had OPTIONS. well. one option. but it was a really extraordinary option.#her death in s5 despite /everything/ would cheapen the final season immensely and would come off as almost laughably #desperate- but above all so so CRUEL to max and her friends #if she can't live and she can't just die in the attic don't prolong her and her friends' suffering for a far less impactful departure #and furthermore if she can’t live don’t purposefully degrade the meaning and remove the consequences #of a visually and emotionally stunning moment to string along viewers who want to know if max is going to be okay either!!!!#they're already on thin ice from the whole 'el revives max' thing (which i will expand upon in another post) but i've made my peace with it #because it kept max alive and it would actually tear me in two if she died for real but even so. thin fucking ice. to drag max over to #another season after all of that fragile ice walking- only to pass on resolving her arc in a careful way- would be devastating.#in terms of emotional and visual impact we have ‘max actually dying in the creel attic’ up /here/#(imagine my hand hovering slightly above my hairline)#‘max pulling through the coma and learning to survive and thrive’ right /here/ (hand at eyeline)#and ‘max dying at the hospital’ allllll the way down /here/ (hand at stomach)#which would really fucking SUCK #to be clear i think she’s going to pull through the coma (thank god) because a) the duffers are cowarddddds and b) narrative reasons that #i don’t have enough time energy or tag space to elaborate on #but i also have trust issues from this season so i can envision a scenario in which they metaphorically pull the rug out from under #us and we all riot at dawn together <3 #max mayfield #stranger things #s4 spoilers #**#millie talks #st 4

I’m just annoyed by AFO, one of the worst characters and he’s the Big Bad. His main body should’ve died against Endeavor so we wouldn’t have to waste so much time with him.

I agree that Hori really didn't need to drag out OG AfO's death. I think he wanted to give All Might and Bakugou a Heroic Moment/Win but it came at the coast of pacing and AfO feeling really redundant. I mean I love All Might and I do think he needed a little bit of a moment before the end of the story but depending on how the story ends it could have possibly been left to his vestige+emotionally helping Izuku.

As for Bakugou getting his moment, again depending on how things go, could have been left for after Shigaraki gets fully possessed, with him teaming up with Izuku.

Because we're still not done with the story I can't say for sure, but I'm a little annoyed that OG AfO wasn't killed by Enji+Dabi. At the moment it seems like if/when Hori redemes the core LoV it will be last minute in a friendship is magic/breaking Shigaraki out of AfO's mind control thing. I'm not a huge fan of that and do wish that Dabi would have helped bring down AfO with Enji and Shoto. He still could have been cheering Shigaraki on from the sidelines to help bring him back, but it would have been the first step in showing he was starting to choose something for the greater good over killing his family for revenge.

It also would have given Enji, Shoto, Hawks and the other UA students that fought him more of a win, while also fitting in with the todofam subplot.

#bnha manga spoilers #bnha #mha #endeavor #enji todoroki #AfO #it just sucks cuz it is a huge drag on the pacing #and so few characters feel like they genuinely helped bring him down #which I think was supposed to be the point #like that defeating him was a team effort #and perhaps animated or read all at once it'll feel more like that #but it really did sort of end up seeming like the Bakugou and All Might show #while also undermining them and everyone else when he comes back 10 chaps later #like idk it feels pointless in that way #which is not how you want a climatic moment to feel #and it makes Hawks loosing his Quirk and Stain's death even more pointless #and Stains death/him even being involved was pretty pointless #and he was my fav character #but he just did not do enough important stuff to be brought back after his first appearance #as a character and what he was supposed to accomplish was just not at all utilized well #like I think he was supposed to be an emotional support for All Might but he was to crazy and had so few moments with him #that he's just useless

god i have so many disjointed mechs hcs and thoughts. ask me about themes and tropes

#the mechs are characters.#and what i mean by that is that. okay so #within the story albums we're meant to understand that the characters (like rose) were people that the mechs have turned into characters #the same applies for the mechs themselves. except this is something they do to themselves #and that's obviously bc. they are characters #but w characters you're meant to forget that they're characters and see them as a person experiencing Circumstances (or causing them as-#-the case may be)#but the mechs. the same way they turn rose ulysses morderd lyf etc etc from People into characters #they do the same to themselves #and like yeah we can extrapolate that they are putting on personas for the show #but i can't help but think that. just as morality and the like degrades if you live long enough #your sense of identity does too #and the mechs have boiled themselves down to core concepts of themselves in order to retain a sense of identity #which is why the creation of a mechanism is marked by destruction #1) bc they are destructive forces. they are akin to natural disasters #2) they destroy who they were in order to become a mechanism #jonny probably fabricated his backstory #bertie's death is muddy and pointless. tim probably doesn't even remember how bertie died #ivy can't remember who she was pre-mechanization #etc etc etc

Finally watched the Mandalorian with Lizzo, and it was awesome, but also aside from that awesomeness pretty much the closest thing I have ever seen to a live action episode of Futurama.

i think the best long term takeaway i had from konmari is “discernment”

i used to keep everything i liked bc i liked it so why not

but now, for ex. with perfumes, if i find a nice rain scent, it’s compared to the best rain scent i have, and if it’s not better than that why would i spend $$$ on a bottle? i have enough nice rose smells, i’m not really looking for more. the best plumeria scent i’ve ever smelled outside of a fresh blossom exists, why do i need more tiare or frangipani in my collection? sometimes similar scents fulfill different purposes or needs but i must say that i’ve kept my wishlist insanely pared down compared to what it would’ve been 5 or especially 10 years ago.
