Foundry Workers Melt Down Charlottesville’s Robert E. Lee Statue

Eventually, an artist will be chosen to transform the bronze bars into a public art installation

The controversial bronze statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee that stood for nearly a century in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been melted down so that it may someday be transformed into a public art installation.

On Saturday, at a foundry in an undisclosed location in the American South, workers cut the infamous figure into small pieces, then fed those pieces into a 2,250-degree furnace. They poured the metal into molds for ingots, or rectangular bars, imprinted with the words “Swords Into Plowshares.” That’s the name of the project that will transform the divisive monument into a new piece of public art.

Only a small group of people, including a handful of journalists, was allowed to watch the melting. They were invited on the condition that they didn’t disclose the name or location of the foundry—or the identities of its workers—over fears of retaliation.

“The risk is being targeted by people of hate, having my business damaged, having threats to family and friends,” says the foundry’s owner, a Black man, to the Washington Post’s Teo Armus and Hadley Green.

Even so, the man added, “When you are approached with such an honor, especially to destroy hate, you have to do it.”

One particularly poignant moment occurred when foundry workers removed the statue’s face from the rest of the head.

“A man in heat-resistant attire pulled down his gold-plated visor, turned on his plasma torch and sliced into the face of Robert E. Lee,” writes Erin Thompson, an art historian at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and author of Smashing Statues: The Rise and Fall of America’s Public Monuments, in a guest essay for the New York Times. “The hollow bronze head glowed green and purple as the flame burned through layers of patina and wax. Drops of molten red metal cascaded to the ground.”

The 21-foot-tall statue’s journey to this point was a long and complicated one. Commissioned in 1917 and installed in 1924, it loomed over a downtown Charlottesville park for decades.

In 2017, amid a broader national debate over Confederate monuments, white supremacists gathered in Charlottesville to protest the statue’s removal. During the “Unite the Right” rally, a man drove his car into a group of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring many others.

After years of legal battles, the statue finally came down in July 2021. The city donated it to the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, which has been responsible for it ever since and leads the Swords Into Plowshares project.

Organizers had wanted to melt down the statue sooner, but they waited until a judge dismissed a lawsuit against the plan.

Because of the statue’s size, the melting process will take weeks. Once that work is finished, project organizers will move on to the next phase of their plan: choosing an artist who will transform the metal into something new.

“Humpty Dumpty couldn’t be put back together again,” said Reverend Isaac Collins, a Methodist minister in Charlottesville who spoke at the melting ceremony, per NPR’s Debbie Elliott. “We still have a lot of work to do, but this statue that has cost us so much, so much violence, so much hurt, so much bloodshed—it’s gone. And it’s never going to be put back together the way it was.”

Life’s naturally bleak for the unproductive. Professional moochers are unable to even manufacture empathy, which is why they figure everyone else is as useless. Enemies of entrepreneurship look for candidates who embody their views. Representation isn’t always inspirational.

A disturbing percentage of registered voters are destructive by nature. The world’s about to end according to their very sophisticated understanding of commerce and science, so it’d be foolish to not feel nihilistic.

Portraying their beloved terrorists constitutes role play fun for those who deem themselves moral. Threatening Jews here in this advanced age of reason is surely a sign of progressive values in name and action. Tracking down the human demons who slaughtered concertgoers has led to Israel getting slandered. Righteousness is often condemned in this fallen world. You can tell who’s never read the Old Testament by how they think their prejudice is new. It’s just more history leftists ignore.

Have lunatic anti-Semites freed Palestine? It’s uncanny how every criticism cloaked as a legitimate response to overreach during a war is based in hating one religion. Tropes that were dated a couple thousand years ago flaunt unoriginality. Calling fighting terror genocide is typically portrayed as an attack on individual Jews that has nothing to do with Israeli war policy.

By coincidence, Benjamin Netanyahu’s rather vigorous take on defeating evil means defending his country’s existence, which infuriates those who call themselves humanitarians. Creating a Third World terror hellhole whose only export would be slaughter would be the two-state path to peace, according to those who believe printing money leads to wealth.

This dejected era offers surprising partnerships. White nationalists are shocked by their Judaism-despising allies. Tiki torch losers who infested Charlottesville have their spiritual pals. The unctuous white supremacists who are not supreme in any way should’ve wore keffiyehs so leftists would like them. The costume is the only difference between lunatic fringe residents. The two most prominent types of those who blame their loser qualities on one religion also agree on the need for a bossy government, so there’s bound to be more consensus.

A daily pogrom is how the woke demonstrate how advanced life has become on their watch. America in 2024 is where you see a menacing mob rampaging on city streets and have to figure out their cause. The tolerant ones act surprised when they’re told which side is infested by enemies of Jews, as it’s not people who want less debt. Fans of vigorous government who like American flag collages show a sad commitment to bipartisanship.

Lamenters of financial stagnation are coincidentally the same people who smirked with approval at burning cities for justice. Bitching that there’s no commercial activity after taxing anyone whose storefront wasn’t incinerated is rich. It’s the only time that last word is associated with them. Taxing the oblivion out of any outpost that survives the inflation plague is simply insufficient. Corporate greed only drags down the economy when Democrats are in charge because CEOs are so partisan.

Life is dangerous out there, what with this being an era where crime is legal. We’re living in the Purge with a script that’s somehow worse. The rioting bloc should reside in a cellblock. But that’d make it slightly trickier to re-elect their guardian devils.

Air conditioning is ruining Earth, not flaming downtowns. Thinking the world is on the verge of ending makes it imperative for zealots to act histrionically. True believers in an environmental catastrophe that’s perpetually pending have convinced themselves that eliminating the terror industry constitutes genocide.

The only way active rot could be more shameful is if it’s unintentional. They’re destroying our way purposely, right? Smashing to accelerate what bleeding taxpayers started is the only Democratic efficiency.

Curse these neo-hippies. The 1960s-style contempt for institutions ruined municipal drags trying to recover from destruction half a century ago for a full hundred years. The useless are always fond of unoriginal ideas. The most enduring one involves loathing the country where they’re free to be anything, including parasitic deadbeats.

Dispensing with quaint notions of enacting a mild welfare state is liberating in its way. The Social Justice Action Squad is way past pretending they’re for slight redistribution. Seizing what belongs to others either on the street or from the Oval Office constitutes refreshing honesty for a parched ideology.

As with showing the perils of their beliefs by implementing them, every benefit elected destructors bring is inadvertent. Zealous adherents like everything about America but the principles, systems, and outcomes.

Voters can reverse electing hateful lunatics, but it’ll only limit damage. Congress will always have been tainted by commie terror fans. The Terror Squad losing primaries fails to negate the eternal shame of occupying ground in the Capitol. Today’s Democrats are somehow worse than traditional examples.

American legislators who are enemies of America seem like obvious choices to not endorse with lawn signs. Avoid platforms including and Albanian-style grasp of economics and outright cheering for terrorism.

Getting to elect lawmakers says a lot about who they’re representing, which is the downside to choosing. It’s unsurprising that people who make such regrettable options oppose free markets. There’s nothing as frightening as seeing what’s popular. Dragging down the nation then bitching that it’s a nasty hellhole is a nearly-clever subtle form of sabotage. The only way to make harm worse is if inflictors believe they’re actually helping.

In 13 weeks, Donald Trump will have locked up the Republican nomination. In the RealClearPolitics poll average (for the period from Nov. 9 to 20), Trump leads his nearest competitor by 47 points and leads the rest of the field combined by 27 points. The idea that he is unelectable in the general election is nonsense — he is tied or ahead of President Biden in all the latest polls — stripping other Republican challengers of their own stated reasons for existence.

I can’t see how trials and even convictions can stop Trump from becoming our next President.

It’s time for an opinion. I wish this were subscription based for Daniel’s sake. He depends heavily on major releases and upgrades to keep his business afloat. This is where I believe subscription pricing could help. Her could do something like $9.99/yr, or $0.99/mo, then he could get off the upgrade cycle train and just add features whenever they’re ready. He provides excellent support and fixes bugs on a regular basis.🚂

Of course I’m not a successful indie giving advice to a man with a long established company and app, so there you go.😃

When this all went down I wasn’t at all familiar with Charlottesville. We were living in California and little did I know we’d move to the area in 2019.

When I started at WillowTree we were located in downtown Charlottesville and I had no idea Heather Heyer was murdered right by our office. It was pretty surreal the first time I walked by it and realized this was the place.

Interestingly, some parts of the internet described the keynote as an “Extinction Event”[2] for many AI startups. Earlier this week I had a need to manually find a bunch of people’s RSS feed links. It seemed simple enough: go to their website and look for an RSS/Subscribe link but I was surprised to find that a lot of people don’t have a link anywhere to their feed.

I see where Robb is coming from. He’s after a link of image with a link to your sites RSS file.

Most modern feed readers will auto discover feeds by looking in your sites head for a specific alt tag.

Sites should embrace the tag based method but it doesn’t hurt to include a link somewhere.
