She kidnaps the Lord of the Castle and brought reinforcements to stop anyone trying to stop her. 4 new heroes, the Butcher (Junker Queen), the Outlaw (Ashe), the Sleuth (Sojourn) and the Fortune Teller (Kikiro) must team up to go through the streets of Aldersbrunn to save the Lord of the Castle. However, things may take a turn for the worse when many enemies like Zomnics, Gargoyles, Banshees, and other threats come to stop our heroes. Teamwork is the key to win this journey…

What a way to start off Overwatch 2’s first event. The orchestra gives a ominous vibe, letting us know that this Halloween event is going to be scarier than the previous one from the first game. The violins adds a sense of sadness given what went through the Bride given the loss of her love. Yet it still sounds scary given that she’s quite villainous like Dr. Junkenstein beforehand. It’s quite the perfect song to start off the best mode of Overwatch and this year’s Spooky Video Game Music list. 🎃

Our tale begins in Adlersbrunn, where the lord of the castle has called for heroes to come to his aid and defend him against the mad Dr Junkenstein. Only four they were to defend the castle against Dr Junkenstein and his minions. Dr Junkentsein laughed as his minions arose, for tonight was the night of Junkenstein’s Revenge!

“You sure we’re goin’ the right way?” The Gunslinger gives you a puzzled look as you pass through the stone archway of the kingdom.

“Yes,” you roll your eyes. “I’ve travelled this path many times. I know where I’m going.”

The man offers you a look of trepidation but you pay no mind to it. The Lord’s summon was urgent and you know you don’t have much time to get there before the Doctor’s evil forces begin to coalesce.

You take the lead, the other wanderers who had received the same summon as you trailing behind. You’d met them only an hour ago at the outskirts of the palace but a begrudging bond had begun to grow within the group. At least, for most of you. 

The clicking heels of the Countess echo off of the abandoned buildings, ricocheting off of the stone streets into your ears. She doesn’t seem bothered by the noise she’s making—too busy exchanging glares with the Gunslinger. 

The Swordsman sighs next to you. “Those two seem to have…history.”

You nearly jump from the surprise. He’d been behind you only a moment ago only to appear at your side without making so much as a sound. You take a deep breath to keep yourself grounded.

You nod. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence they were chosen to defend the castle.”

You try to keep your voice low, but something tells you that the Countess can hear you regardless. You feel her piercing gaze into your back, searing holes between your shoulder blades. 

The Swordsman stares into the distance, narrowing his eyes. “We must stay vigilant. I sense trouble up ahead.”

You feel it too. A sudden chill running up your spine, warning you of what’s to come. The air smells ashy, an underlying note of copper tickling your nose. Something isn’t right.

There’s a low chuckle and you spin around on your heel. A cloud of darkness forms just behind the Countess, who whips around and attempts to slam the butt of her rifle into the figure forming. The cloud dissipates for a second before the cackling continues, this time, above.

“What the hell was that?”

The Countess sets her jaw. “The Reaper.”

“Friend of yours?”

“No.” She glares at the Gunslinger. “Stay wary, he can appear anywhere at any time.”

You only make it a few feet before the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You stop dead in your tracks, whipping around once more. That same dark cloud begins to descend to the ground, but the Gunslinger is much more vigilant than that. He tosses a small cylinder forwards, exploding in a ball of light and sound.

The Reaper tumbles out of his wraith form, rolling onto the ground before you all. He hoists two shotguns over his shoulders on either side of his pumpkin head. He chuckles once more, “The Reaper comes for your soul.”

The Swordsman wastes no time jumping in front of you, deflecting the first shot of buckfire from the Reaper’s shotgun. Everyone follows suit, jumping into action. The Countess grapples herself up to a ledge behind you, squinting into the scope of her rifle. The Gunslinger fingers another flashbang from his belt and anticipates the Reaper’s approach.

You pull out your own weapon, readying yourself for the next attack. The Reaper converges on the Gunslinger and the world erupts into chaos.

Smoke and gun powder fill the air, burning your nostrils. The Swordsman is a blur, dashing through the Reaper who seems to take no injury from all of your attacks. Occasionally, the loud crack of a sniper shot from the Countess echoes out, but the Reaper does not fall.

“How is he still alive?” The Gunslinger calls from your left. 

You turn your head for only a second, but a second is all the Reaper needs. You notice at the last second and manage to roll out of the way just in time, but the shot still grazes your side. You cry out, clutching your hand to your hip.

You push on, fighting the Reaper despite the lightheadedness consuming you. The Swordsman dashes through the Reaper as the Gunslinger tosses another flashbang at him. There’s another crack, and suddenly the Reaper goes limp and tumbles to the ground.

You lean against the cobble wall of a nearby house, clutching your side. As the air clears, everyone gathers around the body of the Reaper.

“The Reaper is dead.” The Countess nudges his concave pumpkin head with her shoe, “for now.”

“Are you alright?” The Swordsman kneels down in front of you, rubbing his fingers through the blood on your shirt.

“He just grazed me, I should be fine. We–we need to keep going.”

“You’re not travellin’ anywhere like that,” the Gunslinger shakes his head at you.

“We don’t have much time before Junkenstein breaches the castle. We have to keep moving.”

The Countess is turned away from you, her collar covering her mouth. “You will only attract attention if you are bleeding.”

“She has a point.”

The Swordsman looks at you seriously. “If those two are agreeing, you know it’s bad. Come on, it’ll only take a few minutes to patch you up.”

“Alright,” you sigh. “Just a few minutes.”

The Swordsman leads you into one of the nearby abandoned houses while the Countess and Gunslinger agree to stand guard outside. You worry that they might kill each other without you as a buffer, but the pain in your side worsens and you know you don’t have much of a choice.

The Swordsman keeps a tender grip on your hand, leading you through the dark house as if he can see perfectly fine. You end up in a half-empty bathroom, all of the cupboards and drawers thrown open as if someone left in a hurry. Probably fleeing the kingdom before the dark forces could converge.

You sit on the counter while the Swordsman rifles through the leftover contents, finding gauze and alcohol. “It’s not much,” he shrugs, “but it will keep it clean and that is fine for now.”

You nod, peeling off your bloodstained shirt to give him easier access to your wound. You feel almost flustered at his intense gaze on your bare midriff but the pain covers it up.

He grabs the alcohol pad and hovers above the wound. “This won’t feel good.”

You bite your lip and close your eyes, bracing yourself for what’s about to come. The second the alcohol touches your wound, it burns even worse than before. You can hear your skin sizzling as the alcohol cleans away the bacteria.

You last only a moment before flinching away harshly and covering the wound with your hand. The Swordsman tilts his head at you, bloody alcohol pad in his hand.

“I-I can’t. It’s gonna make it worse,” you go to jump off the counter but he stands between your legs, keeping you there. “Let’s just go.”

He shakes his head. “This will get infected if we don’t clean it now. You need to stay still.”

“I can’t, seriously.”

He sighs and pulls away, removing his hat and setting it next to you on the counter. This is the first time you’ve really seen his face, and though you can barely see in the dark, you’re struck by how beautiful he is.

“I’m going to distract you while I clean it, okay? I just need you to relax and trust me.”

General Lore of Halloween Terrors

Now before I get into the characters of Halloween Terrors let's start off with the general lore around the world of Halloween Terrors.

First off, what is the story?

Well the world of Halloween Terrors was initially a story told by Reinhardt during a Halloween party, in an effort to show up Cassidy's werewolf story;

(Side note: I love this comic)

However, considering how the story has progressed, I don't think that is just the case anymore. I think at this point the Halloween Terrors Universe is on the same playing field as Starwatch, that meaning I believe it is it's own separate universe.

Now what is the general backstory of this universe? Well let's start off with a few foot notes.

Before the events of Junkenstein there was a war, a war that The Gunslinger and The Solider talk about in voice lines, no other character mentions this war so it can be assumed that this war only happened in America.

The world and countries of this world are exactly the same as our own, at least existence wise. There are no renaming's of any countries.

There is no question in this universe on whether or not magic is real, magic is defiantly real. However, alchemy and divine channelling are not considered magic. Alchemy is considered science and divine channelling is considered a separate thing from magic.

It's not just Halloween monsters that are real in this universe but fantasy creatures as well, such as dragons.

Now with that out of the way let's get into the surface level story of Halloween Terrors.

The first event is Junkensteins Revenge, after being scorned and insulted by the king Dr. Junkenstein tries to prove him and everyone wrong by creating life. With body parts he acquired from The Butcher, he created his monster. However bringing it to life was proving to fail time and time again.

Until The Witch of the Wilds saw potential in him and gave him a magic crystal in exchange for his service to her;

After that Junkenstein's Monster was given life;

However as a reaction to this rampage Four Heroes appeared, The Gunslinger, The Archer, The Alchemist and The Solider. Together they banded together and put a stop the Junkenstein, his monster, The Witch and her minion The Reaper.

There was peace for a time...

But the Witch was not done, she herself wanted revenge and so she plunged Adlersbrunn into an eternal night;

Now initially four more heroes were called to aid, The Countess, The Viking, The Monk and The Swordsman. However, they were not enough as several other heroes ended up joining the fray. The Will-o'-the-wisp, The Outlaw, The Shield-maiden, The Renegade, along with the return of The Gunslinger and The Solider.

Eventually The Witch and her minions were defeated again and peace was restored.

Until Wrath of the Bride.

The Bride attacks Adlersbrunn and kidnaps the king, the only people to stop her? The Sleuth, The Outlaw, The Fortune-Teller and The Butcher.

Now I can't actually explain much about the story of The Bride without getting into theory territory and that's for another post.

After defeating The Brides allies and eventually The Bride herself, Adlersbrunn is once again at peace.

....But for how long?
