Can we talk about Magma’s (Dr. Stone anime) redemption? Cause I recently rewatched those season 1 episodes and I realized how well done it is. Like, it’s not huge, rather subtle in it’s entirety which comes off as out of nowhere to some but is perfect for him in my opinion. Yes he was an ass, power hungry and pretty ruthless, however, that was during a time where all he knew was get girls and power. He’s a big buff guy in a small village where physical power is authority. So it’s no surprise that he gets taken down by team science, which changes everything. Very suddenly the goal, their world, is bigger than they ever could have imagined, which I think massively humbled Magma. There are bigger threats out there (Hyoga, Tsukasa). We can see with Hyoga’s attack that Magma does care about the safety of the village. He willingly fights alongside Senku and the others to defend the village, even if he was reckless and charged in himself. He never put up a fuss after losing the tournament and just integrates into the kingdom of science rather silently, which is where the subtle part of his redemption comes into play. We as viewers don’t see anything from Magma other than snippets of him enjoying some of the new inventions or helping out labor wise, leading up to the cave exploration where he is selected as the 3rd party member alongside Senku and Chrome. And yet still he doesn’t put up much of a fuss. Of course he’s a little pouty as he’s now on a team with the guy who stole the position of chief from him and the guy who beat him in a fight by setting him on fire and pushing him into the river, but it’s little more than an annoyed huff. Of course the trip itself is where most of the redemption comes forth, as we learn of Magma’s assumption that the “smart twigs” control the big brawny people. Senku of course proves otherwise, that the two types work together to cover weaknesses, emphasizing why they need him on this journey. But the part I particularly want to highlight is when Magma saves Senku by pushing him out of the way only for Senku to try to save him. Chrome assumes Magma was trying to attack Senku and really, just about everyone had been saying similar before they had even left, assuming that Magma would take the opportunity to kill Senku. And it’s the look that they highlight on Magma, while he’s hanging in Senku’s grasp just before he starts spouting the act that fits all those assumptions. He knows what people think of him, he knows how he acted, and I think he genuinely wanted to change all of it. He puts on the act that everyone expects from him, “admitting” that he was going to attack them in hopes that Senku would just let him go and save himself, which I’m sure Senku saw right through.

Looking back on it all, it is blatantly apparent just how much Magma had changed in such short time, mostly due to his worldview completely changing, probably a little bit due to humility from losing the tournament, but also, as is said, because he has seen the great things science can make and he wants to see more. He wants to be a part of it, and that is huge for a guy who had such extremely selfish goals when we first met him. This is highlighted when Kohaku’s father mentions that he had never seen Magma help out before, and now he’s willingly offering his strength to help out wherever he can. Of course let’s not also forget that Magma keeps the promise to Gen to get them all back safe and on time in order to celebrate Senku’s birthday, something he never would have cared about had he not changed.

I’m sure there’s some out there who think Magma shouldn’t have been redeemed or that his redemption came out of nowhere (he was planning on letting Ruri die so he could have the seat of chief to himself). But I would argue that it was perfectly done. Nothing over the top, he didn’t need a whole arc, it was just enough. And I think he became a very successful character who values his strength in a way that helps others rather than just for his own gain. At his core he is still someone who likes to show off his strength, but to go from someone who thought the only way to do that was by taking over the whole village and becoming chief to someone who shows off his strength by helping improve the village is massive character growth.

And now he’s a big competitive himbo with a willingness to learn, which I find very enjoyable.

Sound something Gen would say when he lied...But Senkuu wouldn't do that. But to Gen's horror nothing stopped the snowball and it flew right into the hut.

My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s Chapter 208 (“Science Transcends Humanity”)

My thoughts after reading Chapter 208:

01. Taiju, Yuzuriha, and Magma... that’s an unlikely trio for chapter art! XD

02. A crafting specialist, a horologist, and a medical student... Yuzuriha, Joel, and Luna are perfect for intricate work! :D Hyoga’s hands are moving so slowly compared to theirs XD

03. “...a death-defying hole-in-one in golf...” Was that phrased used in Dr. Stone: Reboot? :O It sounds familiar... :)

04. A hundred million dragos for the winning team :O Even Yo, who saw through the Stone World Mathlympics Tourney at first, ended up competing against... or working with... Magma... XD

05. Taiju, the farming king, seems to be in charge of agriculture... or corn, at least! :) Which means food AND revival fluid! :D (Also, fifty-one people revived, presumably in Corn City... interesting!)

06. That... is one complicated-looking schematic that Senku sent by fax... :O

07. Yuzuriha made that net thing so fast! :O I’m... still not exactly sure how it works, though XD

08. They have to sew together THIRTY MILLION tiny rings! :O Thirty million! That’s, like, a million, multiplied by thirty! :O XD That’s SO many! :O

09. I, uh, also don’t quite understand how they made the display with those nixie tube thingys, but I’m glad they succeeded! :D

12. The New World Mathlympics’ contestants are Chrome, Senku, Sai... and Magma! :O Chrome looks nervous; Senku looks relaxed; Sai’s writing stuff down; and Magma... also looks nervous XD

The idea of Magma joining a math competition is hilarious XD And I think I assumed that he was joining because he wanted to be seen as a leader in the kingdom of science - although that didn’t explain why he seemed to be almost forced by Nikki to join... but, that could have been a shoulder squeeze of determination, too :D

14. Kohaku always has faith in Senku! :D Although in this case, she thought either Senku or Sai would win, which is a logical guess! Maybe Kohaku should have been chosen as a special guest for the New World Mathlympics; she DID win that four-against-one arithmetic battle way back in Ishigami Village... :D

15. Ah, Ginro! :) Haven’t seen him in a while! :) Even Superalloy City is tuning in from Brazil! :D

16. That is NOT an easy math equation to solve even on paper, let alone in your head... :O

17. Chrome’s super concentrating on the math problem; Senku’s trying to calculate mentally; Sai is using paper; Ukyo taught Magma how to use the calculator... and after Magma did, he was victorious! :D

18. Kohaku was shocked at first, but she was impressed, too! :D (And, not to downplay Magma’s victory, but the fact that both Senku and Sai could confirm the answer so quickly afterwards is incredible :O Fearsome brains, indeed! :D

19. I like the shots of Senku, Magma, Taiju, and Yuzuriha looking up with hope :) Humanity has come so far :D

20. They were able to do that with just a few thousand of those tiny things... they’re gonna be able to make some huge calculations when all thirty million pieces are finished! And after, or while, they use it for the moon mission, the can also use it for Ryusui Bank :O They have a calculator AND a bank, in the stone world :O (And as Ukyo said, the “prize money” was their salary XD)

21. I’ll guess that now they’re going to Japan to revive Ruri and the rest of the humanity development team (and maybe build them a fax machine), and then they’ll need to make the spacesuits, so I’m guessing that after Japan, they’ll go to Aluminum City... although I would like it even more if the science/globetrotting team spends a while longer hanging out on the ship! :D

hi girlypop bestie! Imma be so honest I couldn’t come up with one on the top of my head so I wrote one for most of the characters. Probably gonna make a part two with the rest idk. I hope this’ll do!💝

Headcanon for most dr stone characters 🎀

Senku: he likes hanging around you the most so he picks up some of your habits (ex: if you like to dance when you work you’ll catch him swaying or dancing a bit too)

Taiju: since Yuzuriha is always making cute things for everyone he tried to make something for her

Yuzuriha: all the suits Senku and all the scientist wear for their meetings are made by her or from her brand

Kohaku: whether she’s dating a man/woman/nonbinary person she’ll insist she does the heavy lifting 

Chrome: searches for the best rocks or stones for your wedding ring to be

Kinro: lied to a security guard breaking a rule so you could meet one of your favorite musicians 

Ginro: ACTUALLY trains with Kohaku because he’s worried he won’t be able to protect you

Gen: refuses to use his mental tricks on you because he doesn’t want to manipulate you

Kaseki: whenever the dr stone couples have kids he makes toys for them

Tsukasa: always kissed you before a fight for good luck 

Magma: stops trying to be the village chief in order to make you fall for him

Nikki: writes down Lilian song lyrics she remembers and gives them to you because they remind her of you

Ukyo: wants a huge family I’m talking like 6 kids

Yo: tries to flirt but it often sounds like insults

Hyoga: if you’re not from Japan he’ll teach you Japanese traditions

Homura: knows all the kingdom of science drama and will tell you it like a bedtime story 

Minami: plans on making a scrapbook of all the pictures of you and her together

Ryusui: loves sports cars so before the petrification you and him would go speeding around Japan 

Francois: teaches you how to cook, clean, etc. in case they’re not there to help you 

Soyuz: as soon as he decided to become chief of treasure island he proposed saying he needed a priestess to be by this side
