The Apothecary Diaries Episode 5: Covert Operations
Tumblr media
Sure, this might not be the most visually stunning series of the year, or the most engaging or whatever other metric you might measure by, but I think, much like today's episode of Spy x Family, it does something that a lot of people wouldn't truly appreciate until they understand it, and that would be blocking and layouts.
Yes, blocking. It's a weird thing to talk about in terms of an anime, but it can be incredibly important in the process of "building" a scene, and comes from the heart of the storyboards. I mean, just look at this scene from early on in the episode.
Tumblr media
What does it do so well? It makes sure that viewers understand that the space that exists within this series is three dimensional, and it accomplishes that very efficiently with character blocking. They're not orthographic or perfectly aligned with one direction or right in the center of the screen or anything like that. They're placed within the scene in a way that remains very intentional and purposeful, but without "catering" directly to the eyes of the viewer. It forces the viewer to understand the scene in a totally different context because of how things are placed and where.
Let me give another example with Maomao.
This one's incredibly simple but I think in the most deceptive way possible very good. The general idea that they're playing with is "balance" and is very important in scene composition.
Tumblr media
Allow me to explain. What we have in this is: the back wall, a desk with a lamp and some fabric on it, Maomao, and then a table in the front left corner of the scene.
And I think that table is the sneakiest part of the whole thing, because it's what really provides the depth and distance of Maomao in this sequence. Even better is that, much like the fabrics and large desk, it's cut off by the frame. I talked about this sort of thing to no end with Skip and Loafer, but to bring it to this episode in particular, cutting objects off, especially in a three dimensional space where they don't just extend in one direction past the frame, but in multiple, is such an incredibly good trick for providing depth and a sense of space to a layout.
Finally, to tie a neat bow on this one, how the placement of objects builds the frame. Maomao is not in the absolute center of the frame, both horizontally and vertically, and that offset requires effort from viewers to correct for. Similarly, placing objects at the edge of the frame forces viewers to become aware of the limitations on the lens that they are viewing the content through. It builds an impressive sense of scope that exists outside what is being shown and is a great trick to use to accentuate things like Maomao's character acting in the sequence.
Armed with that knowledge, the episode really shines in its effort to place character acting and interaction at the forefront while providing a far larger sense of space through its layouts that love juxtaposing proximity with distance. But also, just look at how impressively well the episode adheres to the rule of thirds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my favorite example of the expert blocking and layouts is how they use it to convey the differences between the four concubines and their ladies in waiting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's incredibly impressive in how they're able to convey so much from so little. The difference in the angles (both pitch and tilt), the spacing between the concubine and their ladies in waiting, the organization of the ladies in waiting, there's a world of information that appears with them that tells countless stories without saying a word.
That said, the best example of blocking with the concubines is Gyokuyou's later on in the episode, just look at this.
Tumblr media
Gyokuyou and Maoamo, the "main attractions", of this grouping comprise the middle of the scene, while the other ladies in waiting are off in the wings. What's so great about it though is the depth that is provided by the layout. None of the characters are sharing the same space in terms of depth, and it builds a really impressive scene where Gyokuyou comprises the front of the group as the "head" and Maomao brings up the rear as the last, but most important in the group. All the while, the main duo separate the pairs of ladies in waiting vertically. Just really incredible stuff that gives life and feeling to the composition of the scenes in the best possible way.
And then there's the stuff between Maomao and Jinshi. I just love how they intentionally preserve the height difference and are aware of that despite the two not sharing a scene often. And then the dark vs light in terms of composition and brightness? Really just expert work that makes for an incredibly satisfying scene in ways that you might not grasp right away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's just a hell of a lot of effort in terms of direction and boarding to create an episode that is not just consistently aware of space, but puts focus on character acting and movement so efficiently. Really really great work on the episode as a whole.

Where is the love for Shojo anime?
Tumblr media
Lemme talk about this one thing just annoyed the living fuck out of me: Shojo anime often get just completely ignored by the wider anime fandom and any anime related media.
Yeah, yeah. I know. The stereotypical weeaboo is a dude, who never has seen a real woman up close, but from my years long research on the weeaboo community aka being a weeaboo for too long I can say with certainty: There are a lot of female weeaboos anime fans out there, who will obviously watch shonen anime... but also shojo anime. And it is kinda annoying how this part of anime often just gets ignored.
I love watching cooking shows on youtube. I admit, I am basic like that. And the thought came me there while watching the "Anime with Alvin" stuff on the Babish channel.
There are a lot of shojo anime that show gorgeous food. But... instead the series will each and every week just focus on some shonen. And not just shonen, just always some battle shonen of some sort. And that kinda seems like a waste.
And it is not just there. Just in general when non-anime-media talks about anime, they will usually talk just the newest battle shonen. Heck, it is gonna be a rarity if it is gonna talk about even seinen anime/manga. But shojo and yosei gets pretty much ignored.
Let's face it. It has a lot to do with misogyny. Because shojo stuff will just get thrown out as "boring romance stuff", which is simply not true. Because... there is a lot of shojo, that is not - in fact - romance. While there is also a lot of shonen, that happens to be romance oriented.
Shojo has so much variety. There are even action heavy shojo series (just think about all the magical girls). So, really, the "boring" thing just does not make sense.
Of course there is also the sad truth that over the last ten years the amount of shojo anime (especially those, that are neither connected to a big franchise like PreCure, nor a remake of a once popular show like Tokyo Mew Mew and Fruits Basket) has drastically decreased. Most anime we have right now are just the usual battle shonen, some sports anime and then the twenty-thousand isekai light novel adaptations.
And it really kinda sucks. I would do a lot for a new shojo series. Or heck, just a remake of Ouran High School. Because... Shojo anime can be so darn good, too.

He's insightful, pragmatic, meticulous, independent and brutally honest.
He's also only 4 years old.
Kotaro Lives Alone. But not really.
Tumblr media
This anime is the eptiome of "it takes a village" and while I've been baptized in an introverts tears, I enjoyed rooting for this theme.
The story is funny, gently sad, inspiring and cute!
I really hope that there will be some Kotaro merch so I can stare into his piercing eyes whenever I feel too lonely.
There is a manga and a live action adaption but I'm really hoping for a season 2 of the anime. Even though this may not be what people go to when they think anime, I still belive this has many aspects that will touch everyone in the kokoro in some way.

Apothecary Diaries Episode 4: The Threat
Tumblr media
Yes, I know, I never got around to talking about the first three episode of Apothecary Diaries, but let's just focus on the present! Namely, a rather popular duo (China and Moa Ang) have appeared on this episode as episode director/storyboarder and animation director respectively. Their quality and fine control over animation has given me some things I really talk about today!
So, a bit of background. China as a key animator is mostly known for their consistent work with Yama Nu Susume, whereas Moa Ang is a bit more freeform. Regardless, they've worked on quite a few episodes together as fellow key animators, and have (apparently) got quite the bond. But that's just a preface to the wonderful work they bring in this episode, most noticeable in the opening sequence.
I mean, the refinement of the character acting is incredible. Sure, it's not got any ridiculous shading or detail in the clothing, but the movements are so refined and real that it's crazy. The boldness of China's direction to rely on refinement that could produce a scene like this is pretty crazy. Even crazier is the fact that it's not a one off.
Tumblr media
The use of static framing and the bold decision to avoid panning as much as possible really does a lot for the episode I feel. It brings a sense of tension that is only heightened by the character acting, and works absolute wonders when Maomao's composure breaks in regards to treating Lihua.
This part is really something special I feel because it stretches the limits of expression within such a "tight" show. It changes up Maomao's character design, messes with perspective, and uses framing to deliver a startlingly enraged Apothecary.
Using all of the tools at China's disposal, they force Maoamo to tower over the lady in waiting, they use the framing to ensure that Maomao remains taller within the frame, and even uses the makeup powder to provide a slight visual effect to deepen the feeling of the scene. It's impressively strong visual work that provides a subjective retelling of the experience through the lady in waiting's fearful eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so maybe this post seems a little short? But I don't actually have much more to add. The focus on character acting in the episode is incredibly good, and unless I go through and provide individual examples of it, I don't have much to add. They do use camera movement in the episode, but it's thoughtful work that traces the movement of the characters rather than filling empty air.
I think one thing I wish we could get more of is the very bold environment art. Not that what we have in this episode is bad, I mean, it's all incredibly detailed and pretty, but the ones that play with light are just so nice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's just something that can end up feeling missing with environment art when you get to see ones like the above. Because, I mean, what we get of the Lihua's palace here certainly isn't bad. It's incredibly pretty and well done. It's just that without any sort of visual effects, it's almost... plain?
Tumblr media
It's something I was actually chatting about with a friend last night in how strong composition and visual effects/photography is very much neglected in a lot of series. Now, I wouldn't say that this one is doing anything of the sort, but when you compare to the very strong and noticeable work to the prior two backgrounds and compare it to the third one, it feels like there's potential left on the table. especially because they're a little sneaky and denote differences in the time of day with the coloring. It's just not that strong, or at least I feel it isn't. I believe there's potential left on the table with where they're willing to go.
Tumblr media
But yeah, that's about it. I wouldn't say I dislike the story through the first four episodes so far, but the idea of a purpose and direction doesn't really come to mind, and there's not a massive amount of depth to the medicinal side either. Not that it lacks a draw, but maybe delivery?
I just think about Raven of The Inner Palace. The setups are sorta similar, the flows are comparable. But the engagement and interest that appeared with Raven for me is entirely different. Here, it's almost the opposite- the visuals interest me a great deal more than the story has. I'm hoping that will change because the idea behind it is a very very interesting one that has a lot of potential, but I'm just yet to really be given the substance and depth of the series.

Fall 2023 Plan to Watch
Happy Fall Ya'll
Tumblr media
As today is the first day of fall, and the last season of anime for 2023 is fast approaching, I figured there was no better time to list out what we'll be watching for the Fall 2023 Season.
This is in by no means order of rank, just how they got colleged together. All in all, we'll be starting the season with 25 shows and 4 (at the time of posting) that we'll be keeping an eye on for an official release as they still haven't been picked up.
Tumblr media
Spy x Family Season 2 《Action ▪︎ Childcare ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} If you haven't seen Spy Family (btw I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Spy vs Family, but whatever) then that's on you I guess. Like you still have time to go watch season one, and you should because it's about to get good! I'm just excited for some good comedy mixed with just the right amount of James Bond style action.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 《Adventure ▪︎ Drama ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Magic》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 29th} I first heard about Frieren from one of Gigguk's videos when he was talking about the manga. I love me some true fantasy anime, and I have a feeling that if the anime is as good as the manga is, that I'll be writing probably several think pieces about it.
The Kingdoms of Ruin 《Action ▪︎ Adventure ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Gore ▪︎ Sci-fi》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 6th} The premise of Machine vs Magic/revenge plot seems really interesting, and I'm intrigued by the Gore tag.
The Vexations of a Shut-in Vampire Princess 《Fantasy ▪︎ Vampire ▪︎ Comedy》 {HiDive ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} This looks like silly nonsense, and we love the "Vampire that doesn't drink blood" troop.
I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness《Fantasy ▪︎ Romance ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} This title is a mouthful, but I'll forgive it as long as there is a good amount of sassy comedy.
Tumblr media
The Apothecary Diaries 《Drama ▪︎ Historical ▪︎ Medical ▪︎ Mystery》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 21st} I know a lot of people are super excited for this show. We really enjoyed Raven of the Inner Palace and are excited to see more shows just like it. The animation and artwork in the promo video look gorgeous, so we'll see if it lives up to the hype.
The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Part 2 《Fantasy ▪︎ Magic ▪︎ Mythology ▪︎ Slice of Life》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 5th} I'm so ready for this part 2! We fell in love with series back when season one first started airing. The art, the world building, the characters and their growth, and the mix of mythology is just so perfect! So excited to get to be back in this world and experience the journey it takes us on!
Ragna Crimson 《Action ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai 》 {HiDive ~ First Episode Aires Sept 30th} Dragons. That is all.
Undead Unluck 《Action ▪︎ Supernatural ▪︎ Comedy》 {Hulu ~ First Episode Aires Oct 6th} Look, all I know is that the last couple of anime that Disney has acquired have been bangers so I'm not going to miss out on this either.
I'm in Love with the Villainess 《Fantasy ▪︎ Girls' Love ▪︎ School ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} This is one of two Yuri that we are getting this season. This one looks to be silly and goofy, and I'm always down for some silly girls love fun!
Tumblr media
Butareba - The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig - 《Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} This.........I mean why not. As long as it doesn't take an Inukai-san's Dog turn then I'm sure it'll be entertaining. I'm hoping for my sanity that it's just wholesome fun.
I Shall Survive Using Potions! 《Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai ▪︎ Reincarnation 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} You know, every seasons got have at least 3 dumb, turn your brain off, lazy writing but oddly fun Isekais. This will probably be mine for the season.
FLCL: Grunge 《Action ▪︎ Avant-garde ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Mecha ▪︎ Sci-fi》 {Max (HBO) or Adult Swim ~ Currently Airing (Sept 8th)} Oops, I guess I'm already behind. Oh well! I'm also adding Shoelace to this as well because it aires in a couple of days (Sept 30th), but other than an article saying that it'll be on Toonami there's no official release posting for it. Anyways, I'm excited to see it, as that grunge punk artsy look is something I don't see often, but I enjoy it when I do. I heard the last two spin-offs didn't do great so I'm hoping these don't fall flat.
Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange 《Action ▪︎ Adult Cast ▪︎ Drama》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 30th} I'm going to give this 3 episodes. I'm hoping for some intense drama, but have a feeling that this will feel like one of those "cop propaganda" shows that are prolific here in the US.
Shy 《Action ▪︎ Drama ▪︎ Super Power》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Who doesn't love a shy Super Hero trying to overcome their shyness to save to help maintain the safety of the world! I'm gonna give it at least 3 episodes because this could either be really good or really bad.
Tumblr media
KamiErabi GOD.app 《Action ▪︎ High-Stakes Game》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} I was really worried at first that this was going to be some kind of spin-off of King's Game. None that the synopsis is out, we're worried it'll be some kind of mash-up between King's Game and Platinum End. I want to be wrong. Please, let me be wrong.
16bit Sensation: Another Layer 《Adult Cast ▪︎ Otaku Culture ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Workplace》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} Hehe haha, twist of fate, now you work on this hentai game in order to help us save the studio and also your job. I'm just enough of a degenerate that I'll probably enjoy this.
Migi & Dali 《Mystery ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Mystery Comedy? Spooky twin boys that pretend to be one boy. Huh.
Protocol: Rain 《Drama ▪︎ Video Games》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} Take the "High School Idol group that's trying to save their school" troop, but make it e-sports, net boys, and the net cafe that "saved" them. Hoping it'll be interesting.
My New Boss is Goofy 《Adult Cast ▪︎ Slice of Life ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Workplace》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} I don't know why, but a part of me was hoping that this man's boss was actually Goofy, but it's not Disney Jailed so there was, not gonna lie, a bit of disappointment when I realized that wasn't the case. I'll still watch it. Just means that I'll have a few less "Hyuck" jokes when I do my review.
Tumblr media
A Girl & Her Guard Dog 《Romance ▪︎ School》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 28th} We are...apprehensive about this one, but will give it at least 3 episodes, but if it gives us the creeps due the Age-Gap Romance troop then will probably drop it.
Stardust Telepath 《Girls' Love ▪︎ School ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Supernatural 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 9th} This is the other comedy Yuri this season, but this one has an alien girl instead!
Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductuons 《Detective ▪︎ Mystery 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Wow are we a sucker for these kinds of shows. However, we've seen these swing from really good to truly awful. Hopin' I don't have to drop this one.
The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch 《Fantasy ▪︎ Slice of Life ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Supernatural 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 1st} A funny, lighthearted story about a Witch and her silly little human she raises. This will probably be what I watch to wind down in the evening.
Tearmoon Empire 《Drama ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Romance ▪︎ Time Travel》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} Ah, the old is Time Travel just Isekai debate. We, for one, do not think that it is as it's still that same world even if time has changed. That aside, there isn't enough of these one world time travel shows these days, so it'll be interesting to see how this one shakes out.
These are the 4 that, at time of posting, do not have an official release (streaming or other media) to the US
Tumblr media
The Four Brothers of Yuzuki - Where are there parents? Who is the main brother this story is about? Will there be overwhelming merchandise of these brothers who look the same but are different ages as well? These are the important questions that may never get answered.
Paradox Live - I don't know why, but for some reason, I'm getting DMMD vibes off these guys. I love DMMD. Why is this not available here in the US?
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You - I very vaguely remember playing this clicker idol game. Kinda sad I probably won't get to see how this show turns out.
You Were Experienced, I Was Not: Our Dating Story - Experienced how? I need to know! Don't keep secrets!!
