I’ll be honest – Game of Thrones isn’t necessarily where I’d imagine most couples find their wedding inspiration. But for this bride and groom, incorporating their favorite show on the big day was a no-brainer. With very soft, subtle Game of Thrones nods, they personalized the pretty and Myrtle et Olive designed florals so worthy of your Pinterest boards. This wedding was a very unique combination of themes with lots of colourful feminine garden inspired elements paired with the couple’s love of Game of Thrones! The couple got married outdoors with a backdrop of Deer Lake and an incredible floral arch created by Myrtle et Olive. A hawk was set to deliver their vows but he had other ideas, distracted by a group of birds in a nearby tree, although the bride and groom had an opportunity to pose with him later! The reception was tented with lots of romantic details, lush florals and subtle Game of Thrones hints in the seating chart and table names, hand lettered by Written Word Calligraphy.

One really recent and fun new thing in weddings is something called the wedding Hashtag. Often it doesn't mean much but in the case of Tanya and Zack, we felt it was a key part of how we approached a large part of the story.

When looking for a place to shoot the first look, there are a lot of things that go into it. We want to find a place that’s private, convenient, works well for the photographers and most importantly represents a key part of the story. Location is so important when it comes to telling a story and for this first look we wanted to do something that really fit with the couple and their personalities. Lucky for us the wedding planner was also a family member of the brides, so naturally we were asking her a lot about the couple going in and we found out that Tanya and Zack love the forest, being one with nature, going for private walks and just spending time together in the woods. Simply put, nature is their happy place.

We also learned that the wedding Hashtag was #t+zsittinginatree. So, since the wedding was at Van Dusen Gardens it was the perfect place to have a first look and share a private moment with one another. To take it a step further, we learned that they had love notes that the Rabbi had asked them to write before the wedding day, so being the sneaky wedding detectives we are we asked if they wanted to read them to one another, right after the first look and this became the main narrative in our story and the emotional climax of the film. Enjoy!

Once again we are so fortunate to have worked with so many talented and kind vendors in our glorious city! Huge thanks to everyone that helped make this wedding the MASSIVE hit it was!

The Dream Detective Blog: Dreams of Love and Romance

by Mimi Pettibone People often wonder when they dream of being romantic with someone, does it mean it will really happen? Whether it is an ex, a co-worker, or someone they have a crush on, this question can be very perplexing. The more intense or vivid the dream, the more it bothers us. It can also make us feel very awkward next time we see the person from our dream, even though they have no idea about it!

Kissing and sexual intimacy in dreams are symbols of connection and passion. So we look at who the dreamer is connecting with and what qualities that person represents to them. Then the dreamer can contemplate whether they currently are, or would like to be, connecting with those traits within themselves or in their life.

Sometimes these dreams can be about rehearsing what it’s like to be physically intimate with someone, and especially young adults will experience this before their first kiss. Whether or not it will happen with the person they dreamed about is not necessarily determined by the dream. However there are many documented cases of someone dreaming about their future partner before they actually meet them. This is not the most common thing, but it has happened many times, and I wonder if more people remembered their dreams perhaps we would hear even more cases reported.

Sometimes we dream of making out with someone we would never consider as a partner (casual or long-term) in waking life. We may even find them the complete opposite of attractive! At least on the surface. Whether the person is someone you know, a celebrity, or something in between, look at what that person represents to you and how you might be connecting with those traits (the ones you like) within yourself.

Many romantic dreams have nothing at all to do with actual romance. In that case look at what the dream has to say about your other passions in life such as your creativity or life purpose. Other dreams that do not contain elements of romance with another might actually have profound and meaningful insights about our relationships. The dreaming mind wants us to be happy and fulfilled, to live our purpose, and to love deeply. Listening to their messages can enhance both our quality of life and our relationships with our selves and with others.

The Dream Detective Blog: Dreams of Being Chased

Being chased is one of the most common dream themes of all time. The details of the dream and the perpetrator may vary, but the basic theme of being chased is the same. This dream is a response to stress, and when we become stressed out fight, flight, or freeze response is activated. When we go into flight mode, the accompanying feeling is easily translated by the mind into a dream story of being chased.

In distant ancestral times the fight/flight/freeze response was usually activated by a life threatening stimulus such as a predatory animal or natural disaster. According to recent findings of cellular biology, neurobiology, epigenetics, and developmental psychology, the experiences of our ancestors may be passed down through genetic memory, coded in our very DNA. (For an interesting read on this topic – specifically how it relates to trauma - check out ‘It Didn’t Start With You’ by Mark Wolynn, available at East West Bookshop)

While the stress response of our distant ancestors may have been triggered by beasts or nature’s wrath, today our stressors are more likely to be financial concerns, work issues, health or relationship problems. Other sources can include feeling threatened by something or someone, scary emotions such as jealousy or rage, addictions, illness or a health crisis. Any of these can cause the stress response to kick in. When the body prepares to flee, it may actually trigger ancestral memories of being chased by predators and running away in order to survive, thus: a chase dream is born.

One man had a dream that a war was going on, and he was being chased by the enemy. He could run and hide temporarily, but eventually the enemy would get too close, he would have to move on and the chase would continue. Through working with the dream ‘the enemy’ turned out to represent the financial strains of a bad economy that was directly impacting his work and income. While he felt overwhelmed by the stressors of lack of work and money, he was able to find ways in his life to temporarily escape these feelings just like he temporarily escaped ‘the enemy’ in the dream. If a dream is particularly disturbing or recurring, a deeper exploration might consider the epigenetic layer and whether any of his recent ancestors had been to battle in a war. This is not always the case, but an interesting layer to consider especially if more symbolic ways of looking at a dream do not seem relevant. A symbolic layer and an epigenetic layer are not necessarily mutually exclusive, in my opinion.

Having this dream doesn’t mean whatever is chasing you is really ‘going to get you’. It is usually a reflection that something feels like a threat at the present time. Take a look at whom or what is chasing you, as this can be a big clue as to the source of this dream and these emotions. It may be an outside influence, or even a part of your self. Also consider if there is something you are trying to ‘run away from’ emotionally or otherwise? Often just acknowledging this can play a large part in resolving the conflict. Take some time out to pay attention, deal with the fears or stressors, get support, and enlist the best self care possible. These can be ways to help to alleviate the stressors that are causing this type of dream, and when that is resolved the dream will likely no longer occur.

As with any dream, it is important to look at the individual dream story as there may be variations on the classic theme. One man told me that his wife had recurring dreams where she was the one doing the chasing. I had a hit, so I asked him ‘did she do the chasing when it came to your relationship?’ He broke out in a grin and smiled as he said “yes, she pursued me very strongly’.
