PSA for all the people who have a pet Fibre Artist, whether you have a Knitter, a Crocheter or perhaps one of the more rare breeds like Spinners and Lace-Makers, make sure that they take frequent breaks from their craft by playing with them and taking them on walks since Fibre Artists are prone to giving themselves RSIs and Carpal Tunnel when left to their own devices for too long!

Does anyone have any tips for spinning a really thin yarn? Currently I’m about worsted/light worsted when it’s plied and I want something a little bit thinner.
Like how much wool do you draft for it? Does the amount of twist in it affect it?

just a little update :) i’m almost 100% healed from arm injury (but not quiiiite there yet. i’d say 80%…). actually the fun update is that i’m ~finally learning to spin yarn <3 <3 still not finished obviously! the purple one was my very first try and it’s very very clumpy and inconsistent specially on the first few meters (i actually have no idea how long this thing is in length) (but it’s around 50g) but hey !! i’m doing it and i’m so excited!! hand spinning was one of my main goals for 2024 hehe

Spinning was the aspect of my craft that really made everything click. For a long time, I owed that and more to tarot as it was a catalyst in itself... However. When I spin I feel my energy being drafted into my threads in a way that really hit home. I can't wait to find a use for her in my craft ~ ☆

I dragged my feet on finishing plying and setting the red cuz I'm in school rn, but here are the two colours of handspun merino I finished for my bandweaving project.
Both are about the same, 14-15 wraps per centimetre, each thread roughly just under a millimetre in width with some variation. Real proud of this!!
New research I saw on the Oseberg narrow band pattern appears that one side was bordered with two tablets of linen thread, possibly for more durable anchoring to the fabric it was sewn to. Luckily I have some lovely blue linen single ply that will work great with these colours! (I know the interior pattern on the original was linen too, but we're using all wool instead of silk anyway XD)
Only thing left is to rig up a warp weighted box loom now! I have a backstrap, but it's been a bit hard on my spine lately, and I've been itching to try warp weighting a band weaving project anyway!

Beginner spinning, a time line:
Take a closer look under the cut and learn about what I have learned so far!
This was my first spin. It's a single, uneven, and there isn't near enough to make anything functional, but I did my best. I learned from this one that I can in fact spin something.
This is my second spin. It's made of corriedale and it's uneven. BUT! This is the project where I learned how to ply my yarn without wasting any using the Andean technique.
More corriedale but this one is how I learned to make the fun swirly/braided looking skeins that you see at fancy yarn stores. A little more even but definitely chunky and not enough to really make anything with.
Consistency went out the window with this one so much that I couldn't attach the rest of the fiber I spun for this. It turned out too thick. But it's super soft! I learned that a niddy noddy and a protractor are the next tools I invest in. My chair legs splay out too much to effectively wrap yarn around.
Another uneven spin but it's a little bit better. Big areas of too much fiber but the rest is pretty consistent. I learned how to effectively join two plied lengths of yarn with this project. There is definitely enough to make something out of this time.
This one is my most recent and my favorite spin. It's the most consistent of the skeins I've made so far and I learned to not be afraid of spinning thin. It's soft, squishy, and a yarn weight that I think I'll actually use to make something functional.
Some other things I've learned:
Spin with something to support your back. Sitting on your bed and spinning for four hours because there's YouTube in the bedroom might be tempting but it is not worth it.
You need more space than you think to attach two lengths of fiber together. Give yourself plenty of room. It is also always ok to card out the ends of your fiber lengths again if they are having a hard time attaching to each other.
Angelina is lovely and very sparkly but a pain in the ass to distribute through a project evenly.
Once you spin your yarn you should probably use it. No, buying more fiber to spin doesn't count.

Me: I won't spin anything now until after I finish making Christmas gifts.
Also me: OMG so shiny!
From World of Wool, the colourway is called Peacock and it is so pretty and sparkly!
