The DTC Blues
I remember the 1990s, when the internet was the wild, wild west. Entrepreneurs, flush with tech know-how and investor money, but not a whole lot of marketing sense, launched a wide variety of dotcoms. The common thinking was that virtually anything could be sold online, from furniture to 50-pound bags of dog food, wheelbarrows, and potting soil.
Why not? Folks had seen Amazon take off in the virtual world, and they wanted a piece of the action, too.
The dotcom bubble burst around the turn of the century, and many of those start-ups crashed and burned. The lesson learned was that, just be cause you can, doesn’t always mean you should.Skip forward to the last few years, when COVID found all of us shopping from home, and a new wave of dotcom darlings started to flourish. These were different from the 1990s start-ups, though, in that they were DTC—Direct To Consumer—brands that sold only via their website. These corporate verticals did everything from manufacturing to marketing and retailing.
The problem is that it is very hard to establish a brand in the virtual space these days. Yes, Amazon did it, as have others. But Amazon is selling other people’s products, complemented by its own private label merch. Today’s DTCs face the uphill battle of entering consumer choice sets, remaining top-of-mind, and then making the sale.
No small task, and last year saw many DTCs file for bankruptcy. The outlook for 2024 is not good either.
Tumblr media
Perhaps the best chance a DTC has of survival is to add BAM locations, but that takes money and management skills, something they are often lacking. Inventories must be held at each location, further increasing the costs of doing business.
But those storefronts may be the only way to build brand recognition. Retail is a crowded space on a good day, and if you reside only behind the invisible wall of the internet, even the best laid SEO and keyword buys can still fall short.
Eyewear seller Warby Parker has found success by adding stores. In the process, though, price savings to customers have shrunk. But the company is still around. It’s better than facing a protracted death scene like Peloton is enduring.
Peloton, the maker of expensive stationary bikes and treadmills, scored high during COVID. We couldn’t go to the gym, so we bought our own equipment. But with COVID restrictions behind us, the market for home exercise equipment has cratered. To the company’s credit, they retooled and started focusing more on workout software subscriptions, distribution through Dick’s Sporting Goods and Amazon, and product placement in every Hilton hotel property. But it most likely still will not be enough.
Never mind that home exercise equipment is, for most people, just an aspirational purchase. They wind up being covered in clothes or dust.
The DTC that gets discussed the most is Wayfair, the online home goods retailer. Even though they have been around since 2002, they have showed many signs of being vulnerable. And with 14 million different products, they might just collapse under the weight of their inventory.
The Wayfair business model is a classic. Basically, by being available only online, they could afford to sell at much cheaper prices. Stir in their own private label goods, and you have something that, on paper at least, looks and smells a lot like Amazon. But no matter how much advertising Wayfair has done in the last few years, they are still having trouble attaining top-of-mind status.
It is when you read the dire reports of DTCs that you begin to appreciate just how fortunate Amazon is. Jeff Bezos built a brand name from scratch, the same thing all these DTCs are trying to do. It’s just that he did it early enough in the internet era that it caught everyone’s attention. Launch a new DTC today and watch the people yawn. It’s not buzz worthy these days.
Of course, this doesn’t mean there won’t be successes in the years ahead. Someone will come along and show us how to be a DTC darling, how to break through the clutter and become a household word, how to make money at every step along the way. It won’t be easy, though.
Meanwhile, hope springs eternal in the human breast, and we will continue to see entrepreneurs willing to give it a go anyway, caution be damned. Because if you can survive long enough to pass through these choppy waters, there’s gold on the other side. Just don’t bet the farm on it too early, though.

Disney Streaming Service Details and Name Revealed : Disney Play
In a world awash in streaming video, Disney no longer needs to rely on Comcast and DirecTV and a host of international distributors to deliver its TV shows and (post-theatrical) movies. Netflix eliminated middleman distributors, slashed the monthly price (compared with cable) for a robust content package and made all of its content available 24/7 in a commercial-free, on-demand format.
But as with any historic shift, change won’t come easily — or cheaply. To build their own platforms, Disney, AT&T and others will have to invest billions of dollars in high-end content while at the same time forgoing much if not all of the traditional licensing revenue that they would have commanded by selling rights to third-party networks and distributors.
Moreover, the emphasis on launching attractive DTC alternatives will likely hasten the pace of cord cutting. That will only put more pressure on the billions of dollars the congloms take in annually in carriage fees from cable operators for channels that may no longer be first in line for the hottest properties coming from their parent studios.
In short, the evolution of the DTC marketplace for content will be costly, messy and risky. For starters, Disney will say goodbye to about $300 million in annual revenue it currently gets from Netflix for pay-TV rights to its theatrical releases, starting with its 2019 movie slate. Those movies — including “Captain Marvel,” “Dumbo,” “Toy Story 4,” “The Lion King,” “Frozen 2” and a new “Star Wars” installment — will now be key selling points for the new service Iger has referred to as “Disney Play.”
Also headed to Disney Play are series inspired by some of Disney’s biggest IPs, including new TV series based on Disney-Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., tween favorite High School Musical, and an all-new Marvel series.
Disney intends to adhere to quality over quantity with Disney Play so as to not compete with Netflix’s ever-expanding offerings of original movies and television shows. The company will also avoid pulling Disney-owned and Fox-owned content from existing streaming video on demand and international licensing deals because such a move would be “logistically difficult and extremely costly.”

Clothes Encounters
What goes around, comes around. When I was a kid, we were still in the Spy v. Spy era, an artifact of the Cold War with the USSR. We didn’t trust them, and they didn’t trust us. You never really knew if your operatives had sold out to the other side. The story of Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who killed President Kennedy, was fresh in our minds. Prior to his misdeed, he had defected to the USSR, and then defected back to the US. If ever a person were shrouded in mystery, it was LHO.
Today, while we aren’t exactly best buddies with Russia and its President, Vladimir Putin, it seems we are more concerned with China. Our relationship with them has always been tenuous at best, and whereas not long ago we simply outsourced much of our manufacturing to them, they have now developed to the point that they are a formidable economic foe, not to mention political.
Thus, we find ourselves concerned about companies like TikTok (banned by 34 state governments), Temu and its ridiculously cheap bargains, and Shein, the fast-fashion giant. All were founded in China and maintain ties there, but all have US operations as well. I suspect those US operations are more smokescreen than anything, designed to deflect criticisms and concerns.
Shein, the e-commerce darling during COVID, is now planning an IPO for the US. But before it does so, it must try to shake a slew of allegations centered on forced labor in its supply chains, labor violations, and stealing designs from independent creators. These are the kinds of things that will find Shein appearing in case studies and text book chapters for years to come. Ethics, anyone?
Tumblr media
Fast fashion, by definition, is not just quick, but also cheap. Companies routinely introduce new items every week, not so much to follow a trend, but to create one instead. Items may have a shelf life of as few as six weeks. The implicit message to customers is that, if you want to stay on the bleeding edge of fashion, you have to buy in early, and be prepared to keep buying as new items come out.
What people do with those now-it’s-in-now-it’s-not clothes is up to the customer. Quality is usually suspect, given the price. And, given that the garments are designed to have such a limited run, they don’t have to hold up to dozens of washings. Thus, last month’s hot item may languish in the back of a closet, be sold or donated, or, in some cases, thrown in the dumpster because it is already falling apart.
A quick look at the Shein website as well as their Amazon store quickly reveals their target market: young and female. Yes, they have some men’s clothing, but it’s kind of like going to a Lush store in the mall. You know, the one with all those overly fragrant bath soaps and personal care items that draws in women by the score. There is a tiny men’s section with shaving butters and the like, but you have to look for it. I bet they have those for the poor guys being dragged along for a day of shopping.
Technically, Shein is a DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) firm, a purely online retailer of its own wares. It has, however, dabbled with pop-up shops in large US cities. I wouldn’t be surprised if it expands on these, just like eyeglass maker Warby Parker has done with its shops. But I have my doubts they would start distributing through other retailers, primarily because those cheap prices don’t carry very high margins to begin with. Prices would have to go up to give various channel members a piece of the action, which would then defeat Shein’s primary advantage.
But back to ethics. These allegations are huge, and China, like other Asian nations, is rumored far and wide to have some of the worst working conditions on the planet. Never mind the fact that Americans can’t just fly to Beijing, rent a car, and pay a visit to these factories.
Then there’s the issue of intellectual property. If you’re busy churning out new items on a weekly basis, there’s a need for fresh takes on style. I could see a creative team having to work 24/7 to keep up with this treadmill.
Lastly, there are lingering concerns about US data, which Shein swears is kept here under lock and key. TikTok owner Byte Dance swears the same thing, but that didn’t stop those states from banning them on government-owned devices.
It’s enough to make me compare the current situation to that of my youth. While the case against Mr. Oswald ultimately found him to be the lone assassin, there are still lingering unresolved issues even now. We may never know the details of his behaviors and actions leading up to that tragic day in Dallas.
Shein has its work cut out for them. I am pretty certain we may never truly know all the ins and outs of this firm. The opaque curtain behind which it operates shields them, but will probably also lead to investor skepticism. And that’s a style that no one looks good in.

DTC 475
Our class has now begun to read Agorithms of Oppression by Safiya Noble. For annotation blog 2.2 i will be using the following quote, "Latoya Peterson has argued that anti blackness is the foundation on which all racism toward other groups is predicated." Pg.4.
This book is about how search engines reinforce racism. Noble Continues to talk about how algorithms used by Google and other search engines oppress black culture. She gives an example how when you search "black girls" The Options that pop up on the 1st page are of inappropriate, sexualizing, and demeaning websites.
On the 1st few pages of the book, Noble mentions What redlining is. This sparked my interest because about 2 weeks ago when I was talking to my mother she taught me what redlining is. In this book there are 2 versions of redlining. The 1st one Is in regards to realestate and how getting a home can be more difficult for people of color. It can also be more difficult to obtain a home loan, or get one with a higher interest rate versus a Caucasian in the suburbs. This leads into the 2nd version of red lining that comes in through banking. My mom after she got divorced Stayed with family for a while and then got a decent townhouse in a safe neighborhood. I should Mention that my mom is Mexican. She is Also French and German so just by looking at her people often mistake her for being Greek. Regard less a couple of years ago she had to move out of her town house abruptly because the owners were selling the property. She found A 2 bedroom 2 bath house for a good price in a not so good neighborhood. She doesn't live in the worst part of the valley but, Where I am from you have the old part of town and then you have the newer developments. She lives in the run down part of the suburbs and now that her kids are grown and out of the house she really wants to purchase a property-a forever home if you will or at least something she can invest in in the future. However, coming from this neighborhood (banks use your zip code to "redline" neighborhoods) in combination with making a pretty average income and being latina she already has a fear of the kind of mortgage offers she may get. I was shocked that in 2020, a good hardworking woman had this fear. From a business perspective I somewhat understand considering we think my moms neighbor is a drug dealer but from a humane perspective this process should be indibualized.
Another reason this "stuck out to me is because racism goes in all directions. People think it cannot. I know as a white person people expect me to think and act and say certain things but when you look up the definition of racism it is when someone is being discriminatory and/or prejudice against a group of people. The sub category definition mentions that it usually has to do with oppression meaning that somebody else is holding a higher power. Historically this is referring to white men owning black slaves.
People assume that because I am a white woman, My parents pay for my school, my parents bought my car, I must be a bitch if im not saying or agreeing with everything BLM related. When in fact none of that is true. I work hard for my money and I buy everything on my own. I only share information if I know it's factual and I'm not one to just follow a trend. For example I have given a presentation about Latin culture and the feedback was why is this white girl giving a presentation on something she knows nothing about when I was raised in a Latina household.
To sum it up this is very interesting to me because she is saying that the origin of being Anti black is in part the reason racism is structured the way it is and it's what determines how everyone treats everyone.

—A discussion ensued regarding money available for repairs. Valerie reported that a total of $67000 resides in the West Louisville Now fund. It is distinct from the $150000 sent to the diocese from the National Church. The reasons for the gift from the National Church are as follows: The Executive Council of the Episcopal Church has made a gift of $150,000 to the Diocese of Kentucky, to further our commitment to dismantle racist systems, building justice and peace for all.
Valerie suggested we get additional quotes from contractors other that Raoul, who has done work for us in the past. She stated that Bill Steeley of St. Matthews has offered to get involved as a contractor.
Donald stated he was suspicious of people wanting to get involved now that money is coming into our church. He wondered why they weren’t ready to help earlier. He and others suggested we might focus on using Raoul’s services, supplemented by genuine West End companies.
The discussion was tabled until our next meeting. The dilemma, as I understand it, seems to revolve around incorporating all those interested in supporting our renovation efforts while remaining true to those individuals who have been there for us during the difficult times or whose participation we want to include to stimulate West End development.

Can Retailers Hold Their Own In The Battle Of DTC Vs. Private Label?
Tumblr media
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands such as Dollar Shave Club, Casper and Glossier have taken retail by storm in recent years — in fact, $3 billion in venture funding has gone to DTC brands since 2012, according to CB Insights. More than $1 billion of that total was invested in 2018, indicating plenty of investor confidence that DTC brands can grow at a rapid pace, despite fervent competition.
No doubt noticing that these brands generate both sales and a direct relationship with the consumer, major retailers — including Amazon, Target, Walmart and Kroger — have ramped up their private label offerings.
The RTP editorial team shares their thoughts on the rise of DTC brands and gives advice to retailers on how they can compete effectively in this changing landscape.
Adam Blair, Editor: One of the biggest reasons brands are ramping up their DTC operations (beyond the obvious one of selling more stuff) is the tremendous opportunity to gather first-party data about customers — not just who they are but what kinds of marketing they respond to, as well as what they like (and don’t like) about the brand’s products. So if it’s as much an information battle as a sales competition, retailers need to fight data with data. James Thomson, an ex-Amazon executive now with BuyBox Partners, gave advice to brands in an article that focused on Amazon’s private label strengths: “These brands need to gather more customer data, especially around price sensitivity (how much more likely to buy at various price points) and customer preferences (what current product gaps are pervasive in negative customer feedback).” Thomson added that brands also need to be able to launch sub-brands much faster — in six to nine months versus the usual two to three years that CPG firms have traditionally taken.
Alicia Esposito, Senior Content Strategist: My husband and I do a fair amount of business with DTC brands. He’s obsessed with Harry’s razors and I’m a huge fan of Glossier’s skincare and cosmetics products. Up front, product quality is critical. These companies invest heavily in not only developing a targeted line of products that align with their target customers; they also invest in creating quality products that add something new to the market. Whether through iteration or innovation, these brands prioritize their customers and up-leveling their respective categories. Conversely, I’m seeing many retailers’ private label brands focus on price differentiation alone, which isn’t sustainable for the long term. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, these brands go all-in on customer experience and marketing. Dollar Shave Club creates stellar content for its online properties — and their commercials typically garner a lot of word of mouth. Casper, meanwhile, really set itself apart with its pop-ups, in-store experiences. Not to mention, Casper’s social media strategy is top-notch; they’re cheeky, timely and interesting, and they find ways to add value to consumers’ lives by helping them get better sleep. All in all, DTC brands are investing in all the right things when it comes to achieving customer relevance; it’s time that retailers hop on the bandwagon, or they might get left in the dust.
Glenn Taylor, Senior Editor: Any time I hear DTC or private label discussed in any format, it always seems to come with the talk of margins soon after. Dollar General recently launched its own DG Fresh program, designed to bring distribution of perishable goods in-house and, in turn, offer a wider selection of private brands and reduce the costs of working with other distributors. In the end, higher margins matter to everyone, so it’s not much of a shock that in today’s hyper-competitive environment — where any new brand can set up shop online and gain visibility — that more retailers feel they might as well do the same. An eMarketer article made a compelling argument that one of the biggest contributors to the downfall of Payless was the company’s inability to differentiate its products and build a brand customers cared about until it was too late. The “Palessi” stunt both generated media attention and posed an alternative to the retailer’s usual business strategy by “offering” stylish shoes at affordable prices, in the way that companies like Allbirds or M.Gemi would. Private label isn’t going to solve every problem for struggling retailers, but the basics of offering a product that truly matters to the consumer are a universal necessity among retailers.

Disney Dreams of Streaming With Fox Deal Looming
Reuters reported Monday that Comcast has dropped out of the running to acquire select assets of 21st Century Fox, leaving Disney in the “pole position” to seal a deal. Now it looks like the deal is imminent, with CNBC and the New York Times among the media outlets reporting that a Disney/Fox agreement has been finalized, with a formal announcement expected on Thursday.
As the Times reported, the $60-billion-plus deal would give Disney control of most of Rupert Murdoch’s TV and film empire and give a serious boost to the company’s streaming ambitions:
Under the current contours of the discussions, which could always hit a last-minute snag, Disney would buy the 20th Century Fox movie and television studios; 22 regional cable networks dedicated to sports; Fox’s stake in the Hulu streaming service; cable networks like FX and National Geographic; and stakes in two behemoth overseas television-service providers, Sky of Britain and Star of India.
That would leave Mr. Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox with three properties: Fox News, the relatively young FS1 cable sports channel, and a broadcasting unit formed by the Fox network and local TV stations. His plans for those operations were unclear, but almost all of them involve news, a business that has long been dear to Mr. Murdoch’s heart. Analysts have suggested that they could be combined with the family’s newspaper-focused company, News Corporation.
Underpinning Disney’s interest is a pivot into streaming video following decades of building a broadcast and cable TV empire. With once-mighty TV properties such as ESPN in decline, Disney is looking to subscription streaming services for growth: ESPN+ will launch in the first half of next year, while an entertainment service drawing from its Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar brands will roll out in 2019.
Gaining Fox assets could help Disney form a third streaming service and also give it a 60% stake in the Hulu streaming service. The regional Fox sports networks would also boost ESPN+.
Disney already plans to pull its content from Netflix as it differentiates its streaming service looks to strengthen itself against competition from Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Google.
And as CEO Bob Iger revealed last month, Disney plans to roll out the ESPN Plus streaming service in the spring, and could pursue early uptake of a Disney-branded streaming service by pricing it “substantially” cheaper than Netflix—though acknowledging it will have much less content than Netflix at first.
Acquiring the Fox assets would also support the company’s stated mission, to wit:
The mission of The Walt Disney Company is to be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, services and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world.
As Disney CEO Bob Iger commented on its quarterly earnings call last month,
Our first DTC (direct to consumer) product will be our ESPN-branded sports service, which will be called ESPN+. Launching in the spring, the product will be accessible through a new and fully redesigned EPSN app, which will allow users to access sports scores and highlights, stream our channels on an authenticated basis and subscribe to ESPN+ for additional sports coverage, including thousands of live sporting events.
This one app experience will be a one of a kind product, offering sports fans far more than they can get on any other app, website, or channel and immediately propelling ESPN in the new direction. We will demonstrate this app in early 2018 and also detail pricing and other elements to provide some perspective on the potential this represents to our company.
Additionally, we’re leveraging BAMTech to launch a Disney-branded DTC service in the latter part of 2019, streaming the latest Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars feature films in the first pay window. Our studio will also produce four or five future films a year exclusively for this service.
We’re also planning to produce a number of original series for the new service, and we’re already developing a Star Wars live action series, a series based on our popular Pixar Monsters franchise, a High School Musical series and a series for Marvel television along with a rich array of other content including new movies from our Disney Channel creative team as well as a variety of short form films and features from across our company. The service will also offer thousands of hours of Disney film and TV library product.
