It's crazy to me the depths of the characterization that is quietly under the surface in "Dune".
Like the Reverend Mother Gaisu Helen Mohiam in the movie Dune - Part I going above and beyond to save Paul and Jessica's lives because Jessica is her favorite child and Paul is her grandson.
Just the quiet humanity of her rigging the fix against the Atrieides just enough to save her daughter and grandchild when she isn't supposed too.
I'm disappointed that in the movie they didn't get more into Mohiam and Jessica's backstory, about how much she loves Jessica and went out of her way to raise her own child against the Sisterhood's mandates. Or the fact that she is forever bitter against the Atreides for taking her little girl away from her, whether its the plan or not.
And how, at least in the movies, Jessica is raising Paul in the same manner that Mohiam raised her. With the cold and detached relationship of a mentor and bodyguard but with a love so powerful and darkly obsessive that it can destroy nearly 1,000 years of planning.
Fuck, dude, Paul even looks like Mohiam in the movies. Like Timothee and Charlotte Rampling look so much alike it's kind of scary. Which, for years, casual fans of the movies were like "Paul doesn't look anything like his parents" and I didn't want to spoil anything by saying "No, but if you look behind her veil, Paul looks like his grandma."
Just a thought as I'm listening to the audio book again while watching clips of Part I again.

Looking at the Dune films (especially Part One):
do you think it was intentional that Paul had crazy chemistry with Jessica (and less so with Chani) OR do you think it has more to do with the actors (Timothée just having more chemistry with Rebecca)?

when they said in Dune that they needed spice for space travel i thought it was used as some sort of fuel but no apparently it's just because your pilot needs to be hight out of his mind to be able to safely navigate big ships into space

"There were a couple of scenes [in Dune (2021)] that were all about the training technique. There was one scene that I was quite sad they cut away. There are physical training methods, where Jessica teaches Paul the art of fighting with the knives that he later uses on Jamis [the Fremen warrior played by Babs Olusanmokun]" - Rebecca Ferguson for The Hollywood Reporter

Truly tho Dune worldbuilding is the best worldbuilding because it is BONKERS but it's also full of holes where Frank Herbert simply did not care to elaborate cause that's not what he was interested in writing about. So you can have something like "interstellar travel runs on a bunch of fish men who trip balls and fold space" and if you want to spend time figuring out how the fuck that works the pocket to stick your brain in is right there.
How do you feed an underground city of 10,000 in a desert? How do you dismount from a speeding sandworm? How do you poop in a stillsuit? Frank didn't say and it's up to you to find out.
