Let’s Fall In Love For The Night - (9/10)
Tumblr media
Summary: Being the eldest daughter of a Duke and Duchess means that Lady Y/N has been prepared for society; to fulfil her duties as the next heir to her family name and estate. However, she dreams of so much more than that, particularly, finding someone she truly loves rather than a political match. Intrigue sparks an idea with the introduction of Tom Bennett, a soldier she meets on a Press tour - forming a new relationship that could either make or break her apart should things turn against her favour.
Pairing: Tom Bennett x fem! Reader
“Do you think you were too harsh on her?”
The Duke glanced at his wife, catching the stern look on her face as she studied him. The empty seat at the table remained as it had for the past three weeks. Y/N had become a shell of the person she previously was. They failed to recognise their daughter as she fell into a new routine. One teetering on self-destructive as she locked herself away. Meals were taken in her room, or at later hours when solitude was suitable. The woman waiting for her soldier to return from a devastating war. The consequences were direly affecting her resolve, forcing her into a fragile state.
His face relaxed, regarding the empty chair with a solemn look. “I did what I thought was right.”
“But you see what this is doing to her?” her voice lowered, “It’s tearing her apart.” She watched as her husband’s resolve shrivelled with each word. “You know it as I do."
"Who are we to stop her from being happy?”
He met her eyes, “I am only trying to protect her. That’s all I want.”
“We can protect and support her at the same time. Can't we?"
“You know the ferocity of these people. What they’ll all do to her and this family if it gets out.”
“I rather think she would do fine on her own. We’ve raised her to be resilient and strong. We can’t hold onto her forever, Richard.” he’s left with that note.
***
Every day, she listened to the radio.
And every day, she received nothing.
Although no news was oftentimes better than the inevitable letter many awaited.
The next morning, her younger brother managed to coax her to join them at breakfast. He had managed it with his softened gaze and a gentle smile. Her family missed her presence and so she sat there at the table quietly. The sun shone briefly that morning, the clouds drawing closer. The room was cast in a grey light, the clinking of cutlery and the radio filling her ears.
“News arrived yesterday of the survivors at Dunkirk. A confirmed list of the troops rescued on the shore was tallied this morning. British soldiers were rescued from several vessels, including the HMS Exeter-”
A knife twisted in her chest at the word. The fork clattered on the table as she listened patiently, the sound of chatter ceasing with it.
“Recorded numbers are in the thousands... many were unaccounted for...stranded at Dunkirk.”
Many erratic thoughts rushed through her mind. It darted from worry to shock within a second at the image of him stranded and alone. Their promise was a far cry in the schemes of a war. Promises were easily broken in the scope where life and death were concerned. Breathing suddenly became difficult as the prospect of his body wrecked her.
Y/N’s breath grew shaky. She pushed her chair out, finding the eyes on her. Her mouth parted as she flickered back to the radio. The impulse stirred in her before she moved, departing from the room.
The footsteps thundered behind her on the floorboards. Y/N heard her father call out her name, but ignored it. She swung her bedroom door open, grabbing her coat and keys.
Her mother’s concerned voice reached her through the haze. “Please, talk to us.”
A blank stare and glistening eyes reached her parents standing in her doorway. “What do you want me to say?”
Uncertainty brewed in their eyes as they stepped around the topic. “We’re worried about you, darling.”
She withheld a scoff, nodding her head. “Of course.”
“Where are you going?” her father nodded, looking down at the keys in her hand.
“I have to know.” her voice shook.
“Have you thought about this? What are you going to do?” he asked her.
“I don’t need to consider anything. Did you not just hear what I did?” Y/N gasped out, her heart clambering in her throat.
“He-”, she choked out, clenching her fists as her eyes fell shut. “-He could be dead. Just let me go. Please. I will never ask anything of you again.”
“Please.” her parents’ expressions softened at the pain in their daughter’s voice. The agony was evident in her face as she pleaded for respite. She watched her parents glance at each other, the Duke eventually nodding his head.
Y/N’s mouth formed a tight line as she withheld a sob. Her hands shook, holding onto the keys like a life line.
“Go to him.” he said.
Surprise lit in her eyes at his words.
“I-I was...” her father paused, guilt written over his face. “I was wrong. I understand now-- the extent of your feelings. What I did...it was a matter of protecting you, in my mind. But to you...Darling, I will work to make this up to you every day if it means that I’ll have you in my life.” he gulped. “All I’ve wanted was to protect my children. Not to be the source of their pain. I hope that when this is all over, you will want to come back here. Despite my decisions.”
Her eyes shone with unfallen tears, finally meeting his gaze. “And you mean that?”
He bowed his head. “I do.”
A pair of arms tugged her into their chest before she could depart. She embraced her father, a second pair of arms caressing her waist. A heavy breath left her chest as she breathed out some of the built tension.
“I-I have to go.” she released from the hug, wiping her eyes.
***
Anxiety wringed her stomach, her heart thundering in her chest as she waited for an answer on their doorstep. She waited for relief to fill her once the door opened, but met with the devastation on Lois' face failed to settle those feelings.
“Please tell me he’s here.” her voice low.
Lois’ silence was enough of an answer and Y/N felt her knees grow weak. She hid her sob with a hand on her mouth, the woman pulling her inside.
He wasn’t one of the list to arrive home. She almost broke down, if not for Lois’ support on her back, urging her to let it out.
“I-I only found out this morning. Do you think its possible he could be-”
The creaking floorboards caused the women to glance at the man’s presence.
“Who’s this?”
Y/N wiped her eyes, blinking between the father and daughter. She stood up straighter as the realisation hit her.
His eyes shone with recognition upon finally seeing the girl’s face. “Lois?”
“Mr Bennett, I-uh.” she paused, glancing between the pair before she explained herself. The first meeting with his son. The second encounter and everything from there on, except the minor details of course. She recounted meeting Lois, justifying her knowing of their secret relationship and all that led up to the present.
“I assume you heard.”
Thoughts of what if fill her mind as they all sit in the knowledge Tom Bennett might very well be dead. Y/N flickered between Lois and Douglas, recognising the remnants of Tom in them both. She stepped on her feet, cautious of her place in the room without him.
“I apologise for coming here without notice. I-” she breathed, “I had to know. If you had heard anything else.”
“We got the news yesterday with the listings. He wasn’t on it.”
That sent a bout of relief through her body, yet the question lied in when he would turn up. Or if he would.
“If there’s anything I know about my boy is, he’ll come home.” Douglas stated firmly, “He’s as stubborn as they come.”
“He’s brave, too.” Y/N mustered, a sad smile on her face.
The Bennetts were kind enough to offer to stay the night. Any news received would be directly to their household. Most of the night she failed to gain any rest, laying across the bed. The scent of smoke and something faintly resembling him filled her senses.
“Aye, he is.”
It had initially sent a painful ache through her chest after weeks of being far away. The aching had turned to comfort as she nestled her face between the pillow and blanket, falling into a haze of sleep and restlessness over the night.
Two days had passed. She had phoned her parents that first morning of her plan to stay in Manchester. Her mother relayed her concerns and best wishes, understanding of the circumstances. She assured her daughter that her father was supportive nevertheless, much to her relief.
The rustling of Lois leaving the room caused Y/N to open her eyes. She blinked away the sleep, turning her head to the door that remained ajar. The creaking of footsteps reached her ears, rustling before the sound of the front door opened. A muffled gasp and a shout sounded, her heart lurching in her chest. Y/N rustled for Lois’ gown, slipping into it as her thoughts were lost to her.
Only instincts pushed her to the door as she slipped down the staircase, turning to the back door with a heavy chest and hope building at the thought of-
Him.
He looked tired and worn. She trailed his face, his wounds still healing with red scrapes along his cheekbone. His outfit was borrowed-- tattered; evidently from travelling all the way here. There was cause for concern with exhaustion in his eyes behind the smile he wore. Lois and Douglas had pulled away from the hug, allowing a full view of her standing in his line of sight.
“Tom.” she finally breathed. “You’re-”
TAGS
Y/N felt her throat close up, and a shuddery breath escaped her. He stepped toward her, meeting Y/N halfway as she fell into his arms. Tom held her tightly against his chest. The woman’s arms clutched around him tightly, afraid this was all a figment of her imagination. The feeling of his body against her was a tentative reminder.
“I’m here.” he whispered as she withheld sobs at the sight of him. The warmth of his touch. The beating of his heart beneath her ear was a comfort, pulling her back from that darkness that paced in her mind for days. “I’m right here with you.”

HARRY’S STYLE EVOLUTION PART 2 (HS1 Era) by an actual stylist
Tumblr media
First off, thanks for the love on part 1! It was truly, so fun to write. I have such a good time looking into Harry's style because it's something I've always kept my eye on throughout his and my own career. If you haven't read part 1, I definitely recommend it, as I'll be referencing some things from it. (Link to that is here.)
This is part 2, which is solo Harry, particularly during the making and tour of HS1 (2017-2018.) I just have TOO much to say about his style for it to be concise I'm so sorry lol.
Without further ado, let's get into it!
2017!
Harry's first official appearance after 1D is on October 6th, 2016, a dinner hosted to celebrate his trio of Another Man covers with Alister Mackie and Kris Van Assche. He wears a suit by Dior Homme.
Tumblr media
To debut his single "Sing of the Times" on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, he wears Gucci tartan trousers (left). He has a real Gucci tartan moment here. Also wearing a Gucci tartan suit to perform on Saturday Night Live (right.)
Tumblr media
At this time, his personal style is still reminiscent of his late 1D style. He's still wearing black skinny jeans and the infamous YSL suede boots. He falls into a real short sleeve button-up/Hawaiian shirt kick here. Wearing it during Snl Promo (left) on Carpool Karaoke (middle) and a black open version at a New York Rangers game (right.)
Tumblr media
On the day his solo album is released, he wears a tartan Vivien Westwood suit with Gucci loafers (left), and on the Today Show, he wears the GORGEOUS bespoke Edward Sexton bubblegum pink suit (right.)
Tumblr media
At this point, Harry's worn a suit to basically every public appearance he's had since 1D broke up. This makes a lot of sense. He's starting his solo career and wants to be taken seriously. What's more serious than a suit? They're often brilliantly patterned or in bright colors. Showing his fans and the world that he's still the flamboyant, bright, charming person they knew in 1D but evolved. Older now, no longer in a boyband but a Man Band, as he himself puts it.
Harry wears these Gucci wide-leg trousers with dragon detailing on the leg several times. I personally love this look. He wears a pink version (left) at his first solo show at the Garage, a brown version (right,) to perform at a Sirius XM event, he also wears a similar one to perform on the Graham Norton Show. Middle, he wears a Gucci suit with Roker boots on the James Cordon show.
Tumblr media
Also, on James Corden's show (sorry lol) he wears the same Roker boots and this dark emerald green VELVET suit by Saint Laurent that I'm absolutely obsessed with and feel like we did not give her her moment (left.)
He's also doing Dunkirk promo at this time and typically dresses much subtler for those appearances than he does to promote his own music. It makes sense he's not trying to command the spotlight at these press events, instead opting to seem more like an ensemble player. For the French premiere of Dunkirk, he wears a suit by Prada and Roker boots.
Tumblr media
In another Late Late show appearance (he does so many during this time), he wears this Loverboy jumpsuit by Charles Jeffery (left), and on an Elvis Duran appearance, he wears a button down with art that mimics his tattoos by Stella McCartney, along with black skinny jeans and Calvin Klein boots (right.)
Tumblr media
In September of 2017, his official Live on Tour starts in San Francisco, and he wears a floral printed suit by Gucci (left.) Later he will wear a similarly patterned floral Gucci suit to perform at Radio City Music Hall (right.)
Tumblr media
At the iHeartRadio music festival, he wears a harlequin Gucci suit (left), and later in Sydney, Australia, at the Aria awards, he'll wear one of my favorite suits. An Alexander McQueen suit paired with gold Roker boots.
Tumblr media
At this point, it's clear that Harry's love affair with Gucci has started he won't become the frontman of the Memoire d’une Odeur Gucci fragrance until 2019, but he definitely has some affiliation with the brand. I'm sure they're sending him pieces and working with him closely. It's unclear if this is spurred on by Harry Lambert or if Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele are friends yet, but regardless, he wears Gucci more than any other designer at this point, and Gucci will go on to supply a lot of the suits he wears during the tour.
At the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Harry performs wearing two suits. First is a light blue suit (left), and later, he changes into a black suit with velvet details and a pink undershirt (right.)
Tumblr media
2018!
Harry will wear A LOT of suits during the Live on Tour tour (those were the days, huh,) and in a bit, I'll go over some of my favorites. (If you want to see all of them, that can be found here,) but first, I want to talk about his personal style.
We see him starting to move away from skinny jeans and opting for more expressive pants. In the picture on the right, he wears the first Bode piece I believe we ever see him wear! This fits the culture of the time as we as a public begin to move farther and farther away from skinny jeans.
Tumblr media
He's not back to adorning himself in vintage t-shirts quite yet (we'll get more into that during his Fine Line era.) But there is a noticeable difference in his style, for sure. He's much trendier than he was before, and much like how his style evolved when he was hanging out with Nick Grimshaw and co, I do think part of this style change is due to his relationship with Camille Rowe.
Harry and her were first linked in July of 2017 and have assumedly been dating for several months at this time. It makes sense that he'd be gaining some of her style from osmosis. Later he'll even admit himself, "There's a piece of you in how I dress."
We'll get more into this during his Fine Line era, as that's when he starts dressing A LOT more like her, but I do think there is a noticeable shift in 2018.
Tumblr media
As mentioned before Harry wears A LOT of suits during this time and though I genuinely do have an opinion on every single one of them, there's just not the time. So below, I'll highlight some of my favorites.
Left Harry performs at the We Can Survive Benefit in Hollywood in a custom Stella McCartney suit. Right he wears the infamous ensemble by Harris Reed (I went to university with them and am totally not jealous at all) on tour in Amsterdam.
Tumblr media
One of the best things about the Live on Tour suits was that there really was a sense that outfits were picked for specific places.
In Glasglow, Scotland, he wears a kilt (left) from London outfitters Highland Store. When performing in Mexico city (right) he wears a suit with embroidery and right sparkly fringe (one of my favorites he'll ever wear.)
Tumblr media
In Bologna, he wears one of my favorite Gucci suits.
Tumblr media
That's it for part 2! Fine Line era is next, and you better strap yourselves in for that one because I have. LITERALLY SO MUCH TO SAY!
Thank you sm for reading! <3

We'd all lose out if our heritage crumbled away
The Telegraph commentary article by Sir Tim Laurence | Published 29 December 2022
Do we care about our heritage? What is heritage? One definition is: “Features belonging to the culture of a particular society, such as traditions, languages or buildings, which come from the past and are still important”. Is the past still important? Shouldn’t we just look ahead, not behind? As the chairman (for only a few more days sadly) of the charitable trust English Heritage, I am unsurprisingly on the side of “still important”. I’ll try to explain why.
English Heritage looks after built heritage. Over 400 of the most historically significant sites in England are in our care, from Tintagel Castle in Cornwall to Dover Castle in Kent; from Stonehenge to Hadrian’s Wall. Why do we bother? Why don’t we just let it all quietly crumble away?
Governments have effectively suggested this in the past. There may be some taxpayers who feel the same. That is why the more historic buildings which are cared for away from the public sector, the better. Fortunately, the great majority are either in private hands or in various charities. Expecting public servants to prioritise between re-roofing a castle and providing better social care or waste collection is unfair on them. Best leave the re-roofing to us enthusiasts.
One answer to the “why bother” question is because historic buildings give us a physical connection with what has gone before. Stand in our sites and you are standing where history happened. This helps us gain a sense of where we have come from, what our values are, how hard-won were our freedoms. Dover Castle contains several of our stories at a single site, from the lighthouse built there by the Romans to the tunnels from where the evacuation of Dunkirk was directed. At Battle Abbey, you can stand on the spot where the arrow pierced King Harold’s eye.
Some parts of our history are uncomfortable or worse. We must not shy away from presenting the whole picture, set in the context of its day. The 12th century massacre of Jews at Clifford’s Tower in the centre of York was an appalling tragedy. We tell that story along with many others in a brilliant new timber structure within the Tower which gives better access at all levels.
The curious tale of Caribbean prisoners-of-war held at Portchester Castle in Portsmouth Harbour in the 1790s was re-discovered only recently and is now told in full. The transatlantic slave trade – a ghastly stain on our nation’s history – is explained at those sites where there is a connection. But so is the story of England’s role in the abolition movement. Kenwood in Hampstead was the home of Lord Mansfield whose 1772 ruling was one of the key milestones in that journey. It doesn’t excuse what went before but it reflects another side of the national character.
The physical beauty and serene atmosphere at many historic sites are other reasons why we should look after them. A walk around Lindisfarne Priory in Northumberland or Mount Grace Priory in Yorkshire is a great way to revive the soul.
Can the past help us prepare for the future? Perhaps. “If men could learn from history,” wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1831, “what lessons it might teach us! But passion and party blind our eyes, and the light which experience gives is a lantern on the stern, which shines only on the waves behind.”
Nearly a century later, King George V toured the cemeteries of the Western Front and asked “whether there can be more potent advocates of peace upon the Earth through the years to come than this massed multitude of silent witnesses to the desolation of war.” Sadly, it appears that President Putin is blind to this. Nonetheless, it is important that the message remains visible for those who have the wit to understand it and the wisdom to apply it.
So we heritage bodies press on, bruised by the effects of Covid but unbowed, helped by generous government support (thank you, Prime Minister, much appreciated). To survive financially we need more members and other visitors, and that encourages us to present our sites in ever better ways, to make the experience more rewarding, to serve good coffee and to keep the loos clean. That is in everyone’s interest. We will need more philanthropic support as well. We must try out new approaches to make sure every part of our society feels welcome and well-informed, even if that generates criticism from some quarters. It’s good to test what works and what doesn’t, as long as one is prepared to recognise the latter and change course accordingly. If such public controversy and debate encourages more people to visit our sites and find out for themselves, then we have all gained.
Sir Tim Laurence is chairman of English Heritage

I listened to a podcast and a gay man was talking about Harry queerbaiting. Unfortunately he seemed to think that Harry was queerbaiting for sure. I was expecting more nuance and that he would bring up closeted gay men but nope, he thought Harry was queerbaiting. But he mentioned that he wouldn't mind Harry using gay aesthetics if he contributed to the lgbtq+ community in a way like by activism and charity. To be an ally. It was an interesting point. Harry hasn't done this really, he just waves pride flags and dresses flamboyant. Pleasing has donated to an lgbtq+ charity before but it wasn't publicized, it didn't leave the fandom. Harry has worked with lgbtq+ designers but again it doesn't tend to leave the fandom. His queer coding doesn't get picked up outside the fandom because it's so subtle. It doesn't even get picked up much within the fandom since a lot of his fans are straight. He really needs to take bigger actions like donate publicly to lgbtq+ charities, post about pride and do some activism. More bigger things. I remember when he got nominated for a glaad award for lgbtq+ ally and he didn't even turn up. He didn't win but he could have made an appearance. There is just so much more he could do and it would probably help diminish the queerbaiting accusations.
Hi, anon!
He's done some small things over the years, like wishing the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard happy 40th birthday.
youtube
He's donated his Gucci loafers to and LGBTQ charity.
He also posted a congratulation to the US after the legalisation of gay marriage in 2015. So he has done some things, it's just been a long time since he's done anything like this and it's not widespread known information. I generally find both H and L's charity involvement and social activism lacking. They used to be so involved and do so much to put focus on important issues, now we hardly see them do anything.
I'm also not sure that all queer people will "forgive" H for queerbaiting or start to tolerate it if he starts showing ally support for the lgbtqai+ community. I also think it might be a little too late, and a very obvious attempt at damage control. It might just make things worse. Doing a lot of lgbtqai focused work will also make people question his sexuality, and he's trying to manipulate people into not questioning his sexuality. So it's all very tricky.

Cillian, my friend, if memory isn't failing me, the last time we saw each other might as well have been at the Dunkirk press tour we did together, and that's a shame. Congrats on yet another amazing one with the one only Christopher Nolan, how was it, filming it?! I haven't had the chance to see it yet, but it's on the top of my list of all the things I want to do now that I have a little more free time in my hands. I already know it's will be bloody brilliant. [ @cmhills ]

'I think Oppenheimer is the biggest film I’ve ever made,” Christopher Nolan says without a hint of irony. It’s a striking claim from someone who has directed some of the most gargantuan blockbusters of the past 15 years – but it’s not inaccurate. At the heart of the biographical drama, which stars Cillian Murphy as the man who masterminded the birth of the atomic bomb, lies a truth of planetary scale. When the weapon was first tested – an event now known by its codename, Trinity – there was a chance that it might wipe out all of human existence. A prospect such as that would probably deter most people from proceeding, but not Oppenheimer; he pushed the button anyway.
“The film I wanted to make couldn’t have been done smaller,” Nolan says of the $100m (£77.7m) film one day after its world premiere in Paris. “It’s not about money, it’s not about budget – the magnitude of the story is what attracted me to it. The fact that Oppenheimer and his fellow scientists couldn’t completely eliminate the possibility that they might set fire to the atmosphere and destroy the entire world, but still triggered the test – the idea of someone taking that risk on behalf of all of us and all our descendants. There’s nothing bigger than that.”
The film hinged, though, on finding the right individual to bring Oppenheimer to life. Murphy, 47, had worked with the filmmaker five times before – on the Dark Knight trilogy (2005-12), Inception (2010), and Dunkirk (2017) – but in supporting roles; always Nolan’s bridesmaid, never the bride. This time round, he was wanted for the top job and, one chilly day in October 2021, the Irish actor received a call from Nolan informing him so. It was an instant yes.
“In typical Chris fashion, he didn’t tell me he was writing a script,” a visibly tired Murphy tells me on the final day of the film’s press tour; in just 24 hours, he will leave the UK premiere alongside his co-stars in solidarity with the actors’ strike in Hollywood. “There was no build-up or warning; he just called me out of the blue and said, ‘Would you like to play him?’ I’d be lying if I said I didn’t desperately want to play a lead for him. I think any actor in the world would want to work with Chris, whatever size the part. It was a dream.”
Nolan has long been one of the world’s premier directors. After breaking onto the indie film scene with Following (1998) and Memento (2000), the London-born Nolan delivered the one-two punch of Batman Begins (2005) and The Prestige (2006), showing that he could steer projects of any size to both critical and commercial success. By the time The Dark Knight became the highest-grossing film of 2008, he had been handed the keys to Hollywood.
Oppenheimer is Nolan’s 12th release – and it could be his least commercial one yet: a chewy, three-hour-long pressure-cooker of a film that’s partly shot in black and white, and told in, you guessed it, non-linear form. It’s well known that the writer-director opts to shun CGI in favour of practical effects: he had a rotating corridor created for mind-bending thriller Inception, brought in real battleships while filming the intense Second World War drama Dunkirk, and crashed a real 747 plane in the complex, divisive Tenet (2020). For Oppenheimer, he went one further – he recreated an atomic blast.
It was just one of the challenges Nolan set himself, to be able to create the film in the way he desired. That vision doesn’t depict the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs that caused such suffering and destruction – an estimated 129,000 to 226,000 people were killed by the two detonations, which left a lasting trauma that still affects Japan (and, one could say, the entire world). To this day, Western filmmakers have only partially engaged with the true horrors of the atomic bombings. This is Nolan’s interpretation of Oppenheimer’s story.
For Murphy, it’s a big moment in his movie career. Earlier this month, he listened on as his Oppenheimer co-star Robert Downey Jr told him that his life would change now that he had been cast as the lead in “this huge film”. The suggestion, though, that this is Murphy’s breakout role was confusing to some. After all, the actor burst onto the scene more than two decades ago with his appearance in Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later (2002). Since then, he’s gained worldwide recognition as the face of Steven Knight’s period gangster show Peaky Blinders, released on the BBC in the UK and on Netflix practically everywhere else. What did Murphy make of Downey Jr’s suggestion?
“Honestly, and I know every actor says this ad nauseam, but I don’t think about it,” he explains. “Peaky Blinders is a phenomenon – it’s all over the world and people adore it – but you can never think about that ancillary aspect of the work, because then you wouldn’t do it properly.”
Nolan’s “encyclopaedic” knowledge of Oppenheimer protected Murphy from becoming too aware of any pressures his director was facing. Instead, he searched for a way to “connect with and find the truth” of Oppenheimer “in every moment” of the film. In preparation, the actor watched David Lean’s 1962 epic (and noted Nolan favourite) Lawrence of Arabia “in terms of the scale and the life-story aspect”. Also on the homework list was Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984), “because of Salieri and Mozart, that kind of competitive relationship”, which was echoed in Oppenheimer’s dealings with the slippery philanthropist Lewis Strauss (Downey Jr), an increasingly obstructive figure in Oppenheimer’s life in the years following his creation of the bomb.
The remainder of Murphy’s supporting cast, a who’s who of Hollywood, all deliver. There’s Matt Damon on surly form as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves, Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s admirably patient wife Kitty, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, the psychiatrist who had an extramarital affair with Oppenheimer. The multitude of physicist roles (there are a lot) are played by actors including Josh Hartnett, Benny Safdie, David Krumholtz and Kenneth Branagh – and for good measure, there’s even Tom Conti as Albert Einstein, and Gary Oldman playing yet another world leader after his portrayal of Churchill in Darkest Hour: the American president Harry S Truman.
It was the assembling of this huge ensemble around Murphy that helped to convey the grandiosity Nolan was after. “Scale in cinema is a peculiar thing,” he says. “Does it come from actions and effects? Or does it come from the most exciting actors of the day coming together to tell a story that’s about the moment the world changes for ever?”
Indeed, for such an expensive film, Oppenheimer is surprisingly dialogue-heavy. Reviews have compared the scenes that focus on the hearings exploring Oppenheimer’s involvement in the Manhattan Project with similar ones in Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991) and Nixon (1995) – and there’s more than a little Alan J Pakula and Sidney Lumet in the film’s political intrigue. It’s also filled to the brim with unsettling close-ups; in some scenes, it feels as if you’d be able to touch Murphy’s chiselled cheekbones should you reach out and try.
However, he bristles at the reminder that his face will be blasted on cinema screens around the world – in Imax, no less – all summer long. “I love watching Christopher Nolan’s films when I’m not in them,” he says. “You don’t have to freak out about the size of your ears or whatever. I don’t make films so I can look at myself. I really don’t. Having said that, I did want to watch this movie with an audience, as that’s how it’s designed.”
It’s how every Nolan film is designed. But with great power comes greater need for box office success. This could be seen as a corollary of making such large films, and I ask Nolan if he feels that this becomes reductive when it comes to measuring the true success of a release. “I don’t have an honest answer to that question,” he says, before tackling it rather honestly.
“It’s a combination of factors. My impulse is to tell a story, but I’m not a filmmaker who works in a vacuum. I’m not a filmmaker who purely makes a film for themselves. I make a film that I want to experience with an audience, and I make them at budget levels where you really have to try and find the widest crowd. I enjoy that form of communication. I think the Hollywood blockbuster, at its best, can reach people in a way that few other forms, including other forms of movies, really can, all around the world. Beyond that, box office numbers tend to be a little bit of an abstraction.”
The project marked a significant departure for the writer-director: it’s his first film centred on a real-life figure. Despite having American Prometheus as a resource, he found that he still had to grapple with the extent of Oppenheimer’s brainpower. This is why the middle section of the film – focused on the construction of a top-secret lab in the New Mexico desert where Oppenheimer and his team could design, and test, the bomb – came as a relief to Nolan.
“Oppenheimer had a whole other level of intellect than anyone we know, but it was useful to see him named as the director, literally, of the Los Alamos lab, and realise that what he had to do, in those three years, was bring together this disparate group of talents. He wasn’t the smartest person there, but he was the guy bringing everyone together to get the most out of their talents. That’s absolutely what I have to do as a director.”
Despite making blockbusters that require him to spin hundreds of plates for an extended amount of time, Nolan is showing no signs of burnout. He is a director who consistently releases new films every three years, often commencing work on the next one months after completing the last. Will this regularity continue going forward? It seems a break is not on the horizon just yet. “I find it hard to imagine not wanting to make films,” he says, a childlike enthusiasm momentarily cutting through the seriousness. “I will do this for as long as somebody would support me in doing it.”
Whenever that project comes to fruition, you can bet Murphy will “always say yes” should Nolan give him the call – even if it means having to endure seeing his face projected on giant screens. “No project is risk-free, but if you’re working with one of the greatest living filmmakers, I think you’ve got a good shot at knowing it’s going to be good.”
But the wait might be a little longer once Oppenheimer is released. Nolan acknowledges that following a project of this scale will take some doing. “It gets a bit more challenging to find subject matters that are different enough and also build on what you’ve learnt as a filmmaker, so you slow down to a degree. But I love filmmaking, and in terms of budget, I would do it at whatever level I was able to. It’s something I’ll always do.”'

If I was an actor and I heard that I was being casted in a movie alongside Harry styles I would leave the production immediately. His Fanbase is so fucking annoying that I wouldn’t even want to be associated with him. The fact that some of these fans mainly the Holivia’s are upset with Florence because she doesn’t wanna have anything to do with Olivia is insane. they hate her because she backed out of the press tour and hasn’t defended Olivia over her shitty behaviour towards Florence. They way Florence did a red carpet interview and was asked about Harry and you could see her die a little in side was hilarious. You can see all of the Dunkirk actors react the same as well and the my policeman cast . Even with Eternals he was in a post credit scene for two minutes and he was the talk of the entire press tour. The movie isn’t even about him or his character and people who weren’t even in eternal score in the Marvel cinematic universe are being asked about him. People think he’s acting is going to be the downfall of his acting career and it’s not it’s going to be how annoying his fanbase is to the point where people aren’t going to want to work with him
As much as Harry’s costars seem to really like him you can tell that it is kind of annoying. Don’t worry darling were supposed to be about Florence and her character. It was supposed to be about Alice the entire time and Olivia and Harry’s fanbase turned it into the Harry styles show. I understand why Florence didn’t really wanna have anything to do with them or the project because this film that was supposed to be about women turned into a white feminist trash films directed by a woman who sees the world in the male gaze. The same with my policeman. This is a huge role for David Dawson and Emma Corrin. I’m a corn is pretty new to the industry and this is a huge leading role for David Dawson and it turned into the Harry styles show. His fans completely missed the point of this film. Whether or not it was Harries who used it as an excuse to see Harry styles naked, or the Larries who have spent this movie into more Larry proof, Or how Larries have been attacking Dawson since he was casted. It doesn’t matter.Or how hairy was in eternal for less than a minute and the entire press one was about him not about these group of individuals, the most diverse superhero movie that we’ve ever had and how important it was to a lot of different communities and how impactful the story was being told by an Asian female Director and it was fun into the Harry Styles show, Or how Dunkirk I’m losing her hair he was in for less than 10 minutes a movie about a real life event that affected a lot of people, also his grandfather was a part of Dunkirk and it was turned into the Harry styles show again. I know he doesn’t do this But his fans have a way of making every single thing about him and sucking the fun out of it. It’s not enjoyable. It’s not fun. If I was ever cashed it in a movie next to him I would immediately leave because I don’t wanna be a part of the harry styles shit show that comes with how fucking annoying his fanbase is

Q: I wanted to ask, Dunkirk is very unfamiliar typically to most american audiences, and I was wondering what that conversation was like with W.B. when you say like "yeah i wanna make this big film about something most americans have never heard of.

Each Harry Eras ... (Waking Harry Up Because You're Cold)
AN: i was cold one night and thought of this idea. hope you enjoy.
This story contains: mentions of sex, fluff
{ fetus!harry - fratboy!harry - prince!harry - longhaired!harry - dunkirk!harry - fineline!harry - 2021!harry - boyfriend!harry - fiancé!harry - husband!harry - dad!harry }
How each Harry era would react to you waking them up in the middle of the night and telling them your cold.
Tumblr media
{Fetus Harry - boyfriend!harry - in hotel room}
The hotel room you're staying in was a bit nippy. You and Harry had blankets over your bodies but that didn't help with the teeth chattering shivers you're experiencing.
Knowing you probably won't be able to fall back asleep unless you have some kind of warmth, you roll over in bed and turn to Harry who's curled into a ball, sleeping soundly.
You slowly reach a hand out in the dark and tap on Harry's shoulder. He stirs for a moment before turning his body to face you. Then he whispers in a low raspy voice, "What is it baby? Are you sick? What's the matter?"
"No, no Harry. I um... I'm just a bit cold s'all." you answer almost as if you're embarrassed to admit you're cold for some reason.
Harry lets out a small giggle before saying, "Why didn't you wake me sooner, silly? Come 'ere." He stretches his arms out and you scoot over to allow him to wrap his body around yours and keep you warm.
You lay your head on Harry's chest and he leans his head to the side a bit, allowing his cheek to rest on the top of your head. Then before he falls back asleep, Harry questions, "Are yah warm now?" All you do is nod back a reply and pull the blankets up as high as they'll go over your bodies, before finally allowing sleep to take over your mind again, feeling nice and cozy in your boyfriends side.
Tumblr media
{Frat Boy Harry - boyfriend!harry - on tour bus}
As you and Harry share his bunk on the One Direction tour bus, you begin to get cold. The tour bus has never had great heating and when you travel in the colder states, it can become very cold quickly inside the small space.
The bunk area you sleep in is small but you're both cuddly people so that's not an issue. The issue is that in his sleep, Harry has turned away from you and now that's why you're so cold.
You reach a few inches to your right and tap on Harry's back. He stirs for a minute and you whisper quietly, "I'm cold, Harry."
Harry takes a second to register what you've said because he was woken up from a deep sleep. But when he comes to his senses, he whispers back, so his bandmates don't get disturbed in their bunks, "Oh, m'sorry, love. Come give me a cuddle then. I'll keep yah warm."
You happily take up his offer and scoot over to his body, shoving your face in his chest. Harry wraps his arms around your back and his chin rests on the top of your head.
Now you're all cozy and fall back asleep to the rhythmic sounds of Harry's heart beat within his chest.
Tumblr media
{Prince Harry - boyfriend!harry - at his home}
Last night things got intimate between the two of you. Clothes were shed and sheets were wrinkled. By the time you finished having sex, you both past out. Now as you awake, you realize that the blankets are all messed up and your naked bodies are exposed, meaning your cold.
You roll over and tap on Harry's back, due to him laying on his stomach, and whisper, "Babe, I'm cold." Harry doesn't verbal respond yet but instead just reaches down to grab the edge of the blanket and brings it higher up on your bodies.
Then he turns on his side and blindly slings his arm over your side, pulling you into his warm chest. "Is that better, darling?" Harry mumbles slowly.
"Much." you respond. His warm naked body pressed to yours has you dozing back off to sleep within seconds.
Tumblr media
{LHH - boyfriend!harry - hotel room}
In the hotel room as you sleep, you begin to shiver on the hotel bed. Harry and yourself are both naked from the late night sex you had after their concert so that may play a factor as to why you're cold at the moment.
You look over to your right and see Harry sprawled out on his back with the blankets and sheets very low, sitting right at the edge of his pubes across his hip bones. You know he's bound to be cold too but is just too heavy of a sleepier to notice.
You scoot over and tap on Harry's chest. He mumbles in his sleep for a moment and then turns towards you to question in a groggy voice, "What, love?"
"It's cold in here." you reply back.
Harry goes to turn on his side and gently demands, "Turn on your other side. Want to spoon." You do as told and flip away from facing him and allow Harry to engulf you from behind. He slides over and presses his chest to your back. Then he reaches down to drag the blankets up and over both your shoulders. You can feel Harry's long hair tickling your neck but ignore it.
One of Harry's hands slides under your neck and lays up and across your collar bone. His other hand is slung over your side, hand resting right under your left breast. You can feel your butt cradled and pressed right up against his soft cock. Your bare legs are tangled together.
Now you're all warm and fall back asleep fairly quickly, loving to spoon with your boyfriend, Harry.
Tumblr media
{Dunkirk Harry - fiancée!harry - in Jamaica}
Harry allowed you to come with him to Jamaica, saying he couldn't be without you for that long. Of course you agreed and are loving every second of it. Even if he's here for work related things.
The weather is nice and warm and because of that, you usually only sleep with a thin sheet over your bodies in the beach house you're staying in. But tonight for whatever reason, you have gotten a bit cold. Harry may be laying half way on top of your body but the breeze coming from the opened windows has you shivering.
"Harry, babe. Can you wake up? I'm cold." you whine out, nudging Harry on his side.
He stirs for a minute until it registers what you've said. Then Harry sits up with squinting eyes and whispers, "I'll go get the thick blanket out of the blanket box that's across the room, m'kay. Hold on, love." Harry slips out the thin sheets and pads over to a box that holds extra blankets and pillows for guest when they stay here.
Seconds later, you feel a burst of cold air from Harry throwing the heavy blanket over the bed, lifting it up and down a few time to get it on the bed straight. Then he climbs back into bed with you and finds his previous position of having his head on your shoulder and his top leg thrown over yours.
Before falling back to sleep himself, Harry asks, "Warm now my love?"
"Yeah, much better. Thank you." you sheepishly reply.
"No need to thank me baby. Never would want you to be cold." he whispers back with a pecked kiss on your jawline and allows sleep to take over his body once more.
Tumblr media
{Fine Line Harry - husband!harry - soon to be dad!harry - at home}
Being eight months pregnant can come with many struggles. One you hate the most is being hot one minute and freezing cold the next. Just like right now.
As you lay in bed, you begin to shiver to the point of sleeplessness. Just an hour previous, you woke up telling Harry you were hot and he took the duvet off your bodies by throwing it back to the foot of the bed. Now your body has changed it's mind and you're cold.
"Harry, babe. Wake up." you cry out.
Harry is quick to raise up from the bed he was laid sleeping on, thinking something may be wrong due to the baby. "What, what is it? Is it time? Is the baby coming? he franticly questions.
"No Harry. I've just gotten cold s'all." you retort shyly, almost embarrassed that your pregnant body is so bipolar.
Harry lets out a sigh of relief and reaches down to pull the blanket back up over you two. He makes sure it's tucks around your body comfortably and scoots over until he's right up on your side.
Harry places a hand on your large stomach from under the blanket and rubs the hand over it in soothing circles. "Better?" he mumbles lowly.
"Mhm." you hum and fall back to sleep, all warm now and loving the feeling of Harry rubbing over your pregnant belly.
Tumblr media
{2021 Harry - dad!harry - husband!harry - at home}
Harry had just gotten up to change a fussy babies diaper at three AM in the morning while you stayed in bed, waiting for him to return. When he does return, before he has a chance to get back into bed, you say aloud, "Babe, I'm cold."
Harry giggles and finally makes it over to his side of the bed, slipping into the duvet and sheets, and replies in a deep, sleep deprived voice, "Come here then, my love." Harry motions for you to scoot towards his body. "Lay on my chest. It'll warm yah up."
You do as your husband says, maneuvering yourself until you're laying on top his chest and shove your face into his warm neck. Harry makes sure the blankets are brought up high over your back and uses one hand to comb through your messy hair, to help you relax. His other hand is splayed over your back, rubbing up and down occasionally.
"Is this better, love? Warm now?" Harry questions you quietly.
"Mhm, thank you. You're very warm and comfortable to lay on."
Seconds later you both fall back asleep. You on Harry's chest and pray you can sleep without interruptions from your baby for at least a solid hour before she wakes up crying again.

I also think Harry wants to get an EGOT. But I don't really think that was the reason for him to get into acting. I mean, Harry can get an EGOT just by writting songs for soundtracks or by having producer credits in things like TV shows/broadway shows, etc, he doesn't need to act to get there.
I think he went into acting probably because he was encouraged by his team to do so. A lot of pop stars have done the same in the past, more or less successfully. Getting themselve in a different industry, acting, in this case, will keep them relevant even if one day their albums underperforms. It's basically their way to try to expand an artist shelve life by making them known by other things besides music and establish them more as household names.
I also don't think Harry has ever seemed super passionate about acting nor that he thought he would EGOT becuase of it, as I said. I really think it was just to make him more of an household name, which they achived, because even though DWD was a disaster it made everyone aware of Harry, even people outside of his target demographic, and lots of people who didn't know who he was before.
And yes I also don't think Harry is super talented acting wise, but i actually think he is able with the skills he has to carry secundary roles of the same size of the one he had on Dunkirk. And if Harry and his team want him to keep acting he should go for those type of roles, small ones.
About his co-stars, I agree some of them resented him a bit for taking the focus away for them and the other things you mentioned. But that's a bit inevitable. Harry has reached a level that he has more star power than pretty much any actor from his generation, so unless Harry ends up in a movie with older and really established actors, or he will always end up being the focus for the media. I mean, even in Eternals, with The Angelina Jolie there, during the press tour they did for the movie every two questions were them asking the actors how it was to work with Harry.... There's not much you can do about that, I don't think... maybe Harry is too famous for his own good.
Also, about Harry being too famous for his own good. Just to say, on his defense, that most of Harry acting performances were not that good but they were also not awful. I 've seen way worse from professional actors and none of them got so much shit from film critics as Harry did. As I say once again because he is too famous for his own good, film critics couldn't miss the chance to try to knock him down a peg or two, they can't stand seeing someone be too successfull... Either way, even though Harry is surround by yes man I think he indeed knows about what those film critics said about him. And I actually felt bad for him last year because it seems that he takes to heart the things people say about him and critics didn't want to back off of him for shit. Either way, I'm sure if he wants to keep acting he will do acting lessons or something like that. Harry seems like a prefectionist.
All the anons about actor harry and my answers are under the cut.
The opinions vary, it depends on several things, but from my point of view, i agree with you.
Hi anon(s),
I agree with you, that might have been his motivation. Extending his shelf life is a good argument. I don't think he's good at acting, but also not the worst. He's just lacking natural talent and he hasn't the time nor inclination to improve imo.
I also think that Harry is not a good actor. His facial expressions are overplayed and put on (David and Ruppert are, conversely, full of “inhabited” finesse). Harry seems off when he plays. I'm sorry for the fandom but it's a fact.
what happened with the dunkirk cast ?
Nothing other than harry seemingly hanging more around the crew than the cast. It seemed like his cast mates resented him for getting the role, or they simply didn’t get along very well. I don't think they're in contact now.
Coming back to DWD, I get that you haven´t seen in because of the second hand embarassement and of course you don´t want to support OW....but is there a chance that you´ll watch it just out of the sarcasm when you know he can´t act // it needed that awful stunt and surrounding drama that became famous than the movie itself and maybee to see the difference between true actor (Florence) and singer-became-actor-because-that´s-popular-now? I mean, I watch sometimes bizzare things just because I know it´s bizzare.
(plus there´s this option to not supporting her by getting the movie you-know-where haha)
And talking about actor Harry - it´s probably also unpopular opinion but I really hope his contract with Marvel will somehow get cancelled because for me 1) Marvel´s totally desperate since Avengers Endgame and every movie after the last Avengers just sucks and so 2) getting Harry involved as a character just shows how desperate Marvel is - and I get that it´s all about money actually but still - please, Harry, you don´t need to drag yourself down this way.
If he´ll continue acting, I would prefer to see him in those small/indie movies with less famous actors. Like Taylor and Nick from RWRB.
And last opinion - I have a theory why MP went much better like how Harry fits in the cast simply because they got to know each other before filming (they had like 3 weeks for reheasals and to know each other?) and he probably felt much more comfortable with queer people who understood him and he didn´t have to pretend. Btw I also have a theory that David knows he´s gay like Harry told him because he´s gay himself and so Harry knew he can fully trust him and be open. And that´s maybe why Harry doesn´t follow him on IG because they maybe got stronger bond and so he doesn´t want any gossip (it´s enough that some tabloids wrote he had something with Emma omg). But that´s probably stupid theory, I don´t know.
No, i won't watch it. I have no inclination to do that at all. I agree with Marvel, i hope they changed their minds (if the rumours are true) and we've seen the last of his acting. About mp, yes maybe, but i just think he had better motivation to do the film. I think both David and Emma knows he's gay and with Louis. I don't think H is that close with David, also ig followers means nothing.
