Its so fucking funny to me that Dusk is meddling with Imogen's relationship with Laudna for funsies, clearly unaware that she is already this close to losing it at all times. Psychic Cowgirl is wracked by nightmares and holding the lightning equivalent of a shotgun and levelling it at the moon. She is On The Fucking Edge. It would be so incredibly funny if Dusk was fully focused on the Calloway mission only for her to get clocked across the back of the head by Imogen because this bit of meddling went too far.
Laudna: You were asking about all the little weird battery things that Imahara Joe had. We saw those in the Nightmare King's lair, which the guy we're hunting was in cahoots with.
Chetney: Nightmare King is a fey creature. Real fucking crazy looking.
So I hope people recognize the work Erika is doing with Dusk, because it’s soooo frickin good.
Beyond the amazing change in demeanor we saw during their dream, they’ve also been pushing the party’s buttons in all the right ways. And this party? This party needs that. They came together to work for Eshteross, they need something to keep them together once that job is over.
And Dusk is already doing that! Without doing anything outright villainous. Just by crossing boundaries. Asking out the two people least ready for romance back to back. Pushing a little too hard for FCG to fly. Letting their annoyance slip through when the Hells pushed back on their plans. And their plans are good! They’re too good, too focused on success without consideration of the feelings and safety of individuals.
I don’t know if the cast yet knows that Dusk has ulterior moments, but Erika is doing a fantastic job of laying enough groundwork to raise the party’s suspicions, to unite them in a way other villainous characters have yet to do. Orym, Ashton, and Imogen stand together to say, no, FCG shouldn’t fly. Chetney and Ashton both refuse to choose seconds— to dictate which of their friends will risk their lives.
The entire time Erika is at that table, she’s watching and listening and looking for opportunities to exploit. The questions they swoop in to ask, the way they poke and imply things about the party… it’s a thing of beauty. She and Darin De Paul really leaned into the unique opportunities of playing a guest character. So much about Dusk and Sprigg is specifically crafted to provoke the party, one way or another.
The Bassuras arc has been my favorite so far, I can’t wait to see the race, infiltrating the Seat of Distain, and the arrival of Fearne’s parents. I really hope Dusk doesn’t die, they’d be a great recurring character if Erika can make the time. Anyway, I love this character and all the work Erika is doing with them, it’s a pleasure to watch.
no but it's a genius move on Matt's part to let the audience in on Dusk's secret. That is literally Hitchcock's rule of suspense: let the audience in on a piece of information the characters do not have.
He didn't have to do a one-on-one with Erika, but in doing so another layer was created for the audience. (and lbr, they couldn't really have revealed an evil guest npc if they were still shooting live, bc ppl would've spoiled it instantly for the rest of the cast, sucking the fun out of it).
We now get to see Dusk's actions in a different light. I wanted to scream several times throughout the episode already that these dumb-dumbs just trust a double spy with critical information without realizing it!
And the little seeds Dusk is planting around the party... How they were "just wondering" how much FCG would sell for, for example. How they kept asking Joe about Fearne's parents. The poking around Imogen and Laudna's relationship last episode doesn't seem like a considerate 'I just wanted to check if I'm not overstepping any boundaries, bc i got some vibes~' anymore. Dusk saw a thread to pull on that could cause mayhem within the party and it's working!
Dusk probably realized by now they can't finish their objective with the entirety of the Bell's Hells poking around. But a broken and disheveled party while slowly gaining full trust from Fearne, her target? Well, that just gets you the price.
If i had a nickel for every time a dnd actual play player playing a fey character dropped the glamour and revealed that they are actually putting on a face and are actually a completely different character with a totally different name and a very different aesthetic i’d have two nickels, which isnt a lot but its cool that it happened twice.
Wait they also both use she/they. She/they’s is there something you’d like to tell us? Are you withholding cool shapeshifting from us? *holds mic up*
Dusk's master plan of sowing distrust thwarted by the fact that Bells do have a baseline level of acceptance for each other that manifests as "haha yeah he might joke about murdering my parents, he's weird like that."
