Okay so obviously The Year That Never Was never was, but if you were on Earth when it started then you would be present in that aborted timeline.

Which means that Twelve and Missy during the St. Luke’s days had to live through it. Or a more precise wording might be that in the Year That Never Was timeline, Twelve and Missy are present. It’s even plausible that they remember their experiences when the universe is reset even though they aren’t in the remembering zone because of how Time Lord perceptions of time work, but either way, they definitely were present in the timeline.

I like to imagine that (in TYTNW timeline) Twelve just locked them both in the Vault and was like, “We’re going to do Gallifreyan meditation for the next year.” It’s extra fun if Twelve is like, okay, buckle up, and then Missy is like “Why?” and he has to remind her that it is in fact that time when she tried to take over the Earth with a paradox machine.

Missy asks, “Shouldn’t you help all the suffering people?” And he’s like, “As you know, Martha took care of that already. None of what is currently happening is going to have happened, so there’s no point.” And Missy is like, “Oh yeah, whatever happened to Ms. Jones after that?” and Twelve is like “I am not telling you.”

Then Missy says, “Well if this timeline never happened and all the harm that’s done is undone, can I go kill some people? Pretty please? It won’t even hurt them, not really.” And he’s like, “Unfortunately I do not trust you not to interfere with a well-established series of events and make this timeline permanent so we are staying IN the Vault until this timeline runs out and these versions of ourselves cease to exist.”

it's funny bc i was so deep into my moffat hate when he was showrunner that for most of capaldi's run i was still waiting for him to fuck up despite loving basically all of it. like i even convinced myself for a second that heaven sent wasn't that good bc seeing near universal praise for one of his episodes just felt wrong after years of absorbing memes about he was The Worst™. it wasn't until series 10 where i was like oh. i can trust this show. i've been enjoying this for years. this is actually my favorite era of the show. maybe steven moffat isn't the antichrist and i was just being a hyperbolic teenager reading into every story by this guy in as bad faith as possible

i mean i certainly don't think he's free from criticism, i still don't vibe with a lot of choices made in eleven's run and you can nitpick dumb things he's said in interviews, but the fact that the discussion and critique surrounding his work basically hasn't changed in ten years and is mostly driven by people who dropped doctor who ages ago is just annoying more than anything
