Scientists have discovered a new species of dwarf boa in the Ecuadorian Amazon and named it after an Indigenous activist.
Up to 20-centimetres long and with skin colourings similar to those of the Boa constrictor, the previously unknown snake has been named Tropidophis cacuangoae.
The second part of the name honours early-20th-century Indigenous rights activist Dolores Cacuango, according to Ecuador's environment ministry.

Viv redecorating with Pippin the Central American Boa
Well someone knocked off his sky hide today....
Funnily enough, Pippin does know how the lock works and will rest his head on it when he wants to come out.

‘ The species is unusual for having a "vestigial pelvis" characteristic of primitive snakes and taken as evidence by some that snakes descended from lizards that lost their limbs over millions of years. ‘

I'd never heard of Tropidophiidae until your post and I'm fascinated! How does their pigment shift work, and why are their little faces so spiky?
Aren't they so cool?
Tropophiids have these little structures in their scales called pigment granules. They're these subcellular things that kinda just hang out in the scale cells.
During the day, the dark pigment granules hang out away from the surface of the scale cells, giving the snake a lighter-colored appearance. This is when the snake is active, so they blend in nicely with the leaves on the forest floor and riverbeds.
Then, at night, the dark pigment granules move so they're more visible. The snake's coloration looks darker, and they have an easier time staying hidden while they're asleep!
As for why their faces are so cute and spiky...we're not totally sure! Those two pictures above are northern eyelash boas (Trachyboa boulengeri), and not all snakes in the family have them! In fact, there are only two eyelash boas (T. boulengeri and T. gularis). They primarily eat fish, so it's possible that the protrusions help them blend in with river foliage or even help them to detect fish moving in the water!
Tropidophis melanurus, for example, doesn't have the cute little spines, even though their head shape otherwise is nearly identical:
Additional tropophiid fact! They have a really unique defensive behavior: they can voluntarily bleed from their eyes, nose, and mouth to deter predators!
Cool, funky little snakes.

tell me about your reptiles? Please?
OKAY YAAY
I still mainly have ball pythons, but my favorites are my reticulated python and my boa constrictor!!
this is my boa, Irene
and my retic, Rearden. He's a 62.5% kalaotoa super dwarf, which means he was bred from a locality of retic that will only get about 6-8ft, rather than the 15ft+ of a mainland retic
and I've also got an anerythristic kenyan sand boa, Rootle, who mostly exists underground LOL
and the only colubrid I own a Baird's rat snake, Tuca
and last of the unique snakes is Katczinsky, my Borneo short-tailed python
and from here it's ball pythons all the way down 💀 I bred them once, which was fun, but for the most part I've rehomed majority of the ones I had. My favorites of the ones I still have are my piebalds, Xavier and Smores, the pinstripe I bred that I still haven't named, and my first rescue, Felix
I've run out of picture space but I also have a bearded dragon LOL she was also a rescue. I've toyed with the idea of getting another different species of snake, or just another reticulated python, but tbh I like having money now and reptiles make it hard to have money 💀 especially when the price of rodents is just ridiculous post covid. I feed all of them frozen/thawed, so none of them are exposed to the risks of feeding live, I've gotten really good at switching ball pythons from live food to frozen/thawed LOL

Up to 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) long and with skin coloring similar to those of the boa constrictor—the previously unknown snake was named Tropidophis cacuangoae.
The second part of the name honors early 20th century Indigenous rights activist Dolores Cacuango, according to Ecuador's environment ministry.
Two specimens were found in the Colonso Chalupas national reserve and in the private Sumak Kawsay park, the discoverers reported.
These snakes "are a relic of time, they are animals so old that finding or bumping into one of them is a privilege," Ecuadoran researcher Mario Yanez of the National Biodiversity Institute (INABIO) told AFP.

Hi! I’m sorry you’re not feeling well! I don’t have pets but I work with animals so here’s some of the animals I work with…
Sasha Rose (boa constrictor. She’s a gentle giant.)
Majarra (dwarf monitor - he’s really hyper 99% of the time but this piece of canvas is his blankie and calms hims down)
Katana (bearded dragon with distinguished music tastes)
George (Florida rat snake. Curious and friendly)
Captain (leucistic zebra shark - a mutation similar to albino)
Osborn (California sea lion who just turned 23. He’s eating his bday “cake” here. It’s made of fish jello)
Kitch (blue tongue skink. His full name is “Everything But the Kitchen Skink”. He’s a big baby who wants to be held all the time.)
Pickles (harbor seal. Don’t let that innocent face fool you. His fave activity is causing problems on purpose. I love him more than anything.)
Hope these animals make you smile!
They definitely made me smile ! such good babies !! I love them so much !
I wanna pet the shark so bad ! Forbidden puppy

what type of snake(s) do you want?
hello thank you so much for asking I can’t wait to tell you
I really only want to own 2 snakes (I think) because they live a really long time and I don’t want to over commit myself. But my list of interests is realllllyyy long. I will give the short version.
BEL Ball Python
Macklots Python
Eastern Indigo
Dwarf BCC or BCI
Garter snake colony with water feature
Carpet Python
Brazilian Rainbow Boa
Super Dwarf Reticulated Python
I’m going for a smaller 4-6 ft snake, typical beginner snake with a ball python. The second snake is going to be in the 6-11ft range though! I don’t want to go any bigger than that because then you need extra hands to handle them and basically a whole room for them to live in lmao

Did you hear they found a new species of dwarf boa in the Amazon??!? Tropidophis cacuango!!!!
Yes!!! It's amazing how many awesome snakes we still have yet to discover (but it is annoying that I have to update my running memorized list of all 3400 and something snake species...😔)!
Anyway, Tropidophis cacuango (or maybe T. cacuangoae, papers seem to currently be disagreeing on how to latinize the name)! They belong to the genus of South American and West Indian dwarf boas, and when we call them dwarf boas, we mean it - these little fellas seem to stay under a foot long. They're the sixth snake described in the genus Tropidophis. We still know practically nothing about them - there were only two identified specimens - and they're proof we still have a lot to find out about the snakes of the rainforest!
Their scientific name honors Dolores Cacuango, an indigenous rights activist in Ecuador who organized worker's strikes, participated in the 1944 revolution by leading an assualt on a military base (!!!), and founded schools for indigenous children that celebrated their heritage and language. I only learned about her because of this snake, and she was super awesome!
Cool snake, cool history. :)
