I'm *finally* rewatching series 9. I can't believe I've left it this long. I know at the time I adored it and proclaimed it my new favourite series, but I just never went back??? God, it's so good. I finally finished my series 8 rewatch, which is a very mixed bag, and so this is just incredible in comparison.

The first two episodes I maintain a similar view to originally, which is that The Magician's Apprentice has too much padding, so it's a lot of style with little substance, and that The Witch's Familiar redeems it entirely. Episode 1 is really fun, though, and the whole thematic setting up of Missy's attempted redemption, which continues up until the end of series 10, is so well done. Especially with all the fascinating Davros stuff to do with compassion and redemption in episode 2.

Under the Lake and Before the Flood are a classic base under siege story. You've got an exciting premise, a good cast of supporting characters and it just gets better and better. There's so much atmosphere, as well as very exciting time travel stuff. I literally started bouncing up and own in my seat when the doctor's to-camera speech about the bootstrap paradox started, because I remembered it and loved it so much.

God, we also get the set up for the finale, obviously with the hybrid mentions, but also the more serious doubling down on the theme of Clara being too like the doctor. That was there in series 8, but it was messy and unfocused and felt more just like bizarre and inconsistent characterisation than it does here.

I also just completely adore Twelve, especially in the Lake/Flood episodes. He's so funny, so lovable, so Doctor. Also, Michelle Gomez was just genius casting and she bounces off Capaldi so ridiculously well. Jenna Coleman gets much more opportunity to play a believable and compelling version of Clara in this series, too.

God I love this series. Next up are the Ashildr episodes and I'm so excited to watch them again!

Ahhhh, The Zygon Invasion/Inversion is so good. Maybe my favourite of series 9? And that’s high praise. Then again, Heaven Sent is this series so idk... God this entire series is actually genius. I don’t understand how the show went from ‘meh, fine’ in series 8 to this.
