For some reason to me, omega! Price is fresh baked bread. Like it just seems correct to me idk why

Beta! Price is herbal. Maybe w some very slight powdery notes. But mostly like tea and old books. The smell is on the warmer side even tho I tend to see beta scents as more... cold? If that makes any sense

Alpha! Price is either a sharp, pine scent. Like a Christmas tree farm. OOOOOR this really yummy perfume I have called Jazz Club by replica. It's such a good scent and I feel like either price or ghost fit the vibe of it.

Johnny

Omega Johnny smells like the syrup that surrounds and preserves canned fruit. Canned peaches especially.

Beta Johnny smells like the sea. Salt water, seaweed… that kind of thing.

Alpha Johnny smells like shoe shiner, or another product like that. Maybe wet paint or varnish?

Kyle

Omega Kyle smells like something warm and cosy and gooey that melts in your mouth. My brain is saying honey or honeycomb, caramel or toffee maybe?.

Beta Kyle smells like freshly cut grass, and ivy. Especially when the freshly cut grass is damp too.

Alpha Kyle smells like nearly vinegary and acidic. The best way I can say it is... strong wine that has just started fermenting.

Simon

Omega Simon smells like talc/baby powder. Makes you wanna bury your face in him and sniff like you do to a newborn baby.

Beta Simon smells like old books with yellowed pages. Not necessarily musty or bad.

Alpha Simon smells of black pepper.

ALTERNATIVELY:

Omega Ghost wears scent blockers. You'd never know what he smells like because he doesn't let you. (It's vanilla sugar)

Beta Ghost smells of freshly carved wood furniture, unfinished and unvarnished, still full of splinters and rough edges.

Alpha Ghost smells strongly of burning. Like a campfire, a forest fire, maybe gasoline or sulphur.

John

Omega John smells like lemon merengue. Sickly sweet and tangy at once, with a softness that melts in your mouth.

Beta John smells like a forest, maybe a rain forest, but I could also see him smell of pine and very obviously so. But the kind of pine that people sometimes mistake for mint?

Alpha John smells like rusted iron and dirt... Which a lot of people confuse with fresh blood. Especially when he's angry and his scent mutates.

Jason Todd's first night out as the official robin.

Shots were reported around the recently shut down Ace Chemical Factory. Robin is the first at the scene and finds five gunmen chasing after man known as The Red Hood. The Batman and Nightwing aren't responding to back up. Robin is wounded and is cornered by three while the other two chase The Red Hood. Batman and Nightwing arrive in time to save Robin and took the fire away from him. While Batman and Nightwing handled the three gunmen, Robin ran toward the ditch behind the factory where the shots and cries came. The shots went quiet, and Robin thought the worst. However, when he stepped outside in the pouring rain, he discovered the horror of Gotham. The Red Hood had been caught between the overflowed river and the two other gunmen. And instead of shooting him dead, they traded their guns for a crowbar and pipe and beat him into begging. Robin threw a birdarang. It blitzed past one of their ears, catching their attention.

The gunman turned, shot, then saw The Batman and Nightwing approach behind Robin. "Fun time's over, Jack. Let's go." The one with the crowbar pulled off The Red Hood's fractured helmet and-

Bang! Bang!

The man fell into the overflowed ditch. The gunmen fired at The Bat and the birds in their flee. A hand breached out the raging water but Batman and Nightwing didn't notice and went on the pursuit. Robin froze, caught between saving a dead man and punishing the weak. To be a hero or a soldier. The hand reached out again. Jason wanted to save people. That's what heroes do. He dove into the black water. Ignored the eating sting. He swam through filth and murk and reached into Tartarus to catch the sinking man. One armed, with all his little might, he pulled the man toward the breaking moonlight. A hand swooped from the surface and hauled Robin and the man from the water.

But there was no glory in the rescue. Only more horror as the blood drowned the man's cries. His jaw leaned to the side like a drooling red sock. His brains dribbled and his contorted body sizzled white. Robin didn't know what to do. He tried to put a hand over the spilling head, but the man cried hell at a feather's touch. He then took his cape to cover him but remember the sensitivity of his skin. He could only watch and listen to the man howl.

Nightwing returned. The dynamic duo acted. They set the now John Doe into the batmobile while Robin watched and listened. They shot through Gotham to the only Doctor that could save John Doe's life.

"Kill me! Kill ME! It hurts! Please, kill me! Kill me!" John Doe screeched and thrashed all the way there. Robin could only watch and listen despite his eyes closed and Nightwing covering his ears. While Batman stared ahead, unphased, and unsympathetic to his tears.

Ivy's Account

The idea here is Joker taking Ivy hostage as blackmail to get Harley to return something he needed. As they wait for her, and unable to brush him off as usual, Ivy begins to get a heavy sense she and Joker may have met before. She listened to his rhythmical rambles, caught the tune he whistled, and the beat he snapped too. Then he sang and she remembered that night at the Ice Lounge in her partying days.

She stood at the bar, eyeing for a pretty cat, when the room darkened and a tall, dark, and handsome boy stepped out on stage. He stunned the crowd when he spoke, a voice so deep and rich it could swoon the angels. He introduced himself by his stage name, Johnny B. Robberts, then sang a ballad of his talent in blues:

Down in the bayou, where the river runs deep, Lived a young boy with dreams, while the gators sleep. He had a voice so pure, like the angels on high, Said goodbye to his mama, with a tear in her eye.

Chorus Oh, he sang with a heart full of fire, Dreaming of Gotham, rising higher and higher. But the Devil heard his song, and he started to scheme, Offered him stardom, in exchange for his dream.

Verse 2 He took a train to Gotham, where the lights shine bright, With his old guitar, and a heart full of fight. On the streets, he sang, caught everyone's ear, But in the shadows, the Devil drew near.

The boy bowed and thanked the cheering crowd. He stepped off the stage and joined The Great and Powerful Oz in his booth. They spoke long and a lot. Then the boy excused himself for a drink. As he waited, Pamela asked, "Did you really make a deal with the devil?"

The boy smiled, "The Devil has always been a sneaky one. He takes the form of many and plays with words with double meanings. But dreams do come at a price."

Pamela recognized that smile well. A smile she put on herself from time to time when things seemed rough. She took his hand and looked into his green eyes. "You're going to be a star, Johnny B. Robberts. With a God-given voice like yours, who needs the devil's help? The Devil only schemes when he's beat."

The bartender came with the boy's drink. The boy took it and smiled at Pamela. A genuine smile with eyes gleaming with new hope. He asked, "What's your name, miss?"

"Pamela Isley."

"Beautiful name. It was nice to meet you, Pamela Isely. Would you like to join me in toasting my name?"

"Of course," she said and raised her glass to meet his. "To Johnny-"

"That's just a stage name. I'd like friends to call me by my real name-"

"Jack," Ivy whispered.

Joker paused his whistle. It was the voice he heard before he came to the cruel world. All this time, he wondered why the voice sounded so familiar. He turned and somewhere in the depths of his ever-changing mind, he recognized her face while she knew his. Then he saw her eyes and the disappointment they conveyed. It hurt to see yet he didn't know why.

"Alright, here is your goddam radio!" Harley grunted through the doors, hauling a big radio box. She pushed and pushed until the radio was standing in front of Joker and Ivy. She panted, swiping off the sweat from her forehead. "Gee, what a way to treat a gal."

"I'm treating you by not sending you her head with her middle finger on top!" He shoved past her and inspected his radio box. "Goddam it! You changed the station! You know how hard it is to find the right frequency for the GCPD!"

"Oh my god, I'll find it for you if it'll shut you up!" Harley growled as she untied Poison Ivy.

After being untied, and after two hours of Harley searching for the right frequency, Joker let them go. Poison Ivy stopped at the door and gave Joker one last disappointed look.

"What?" said Joker.

And her words left him cold.

"You were going to be a star."

She joined Harley and off they went. Joker stood there a moment, watching the car screech into a dot in the distance. Her words rang in his madhouse engulfed by his nefarious schemes. They echoed loud. She sounded proud. But now... Joker went to the radio and changed the station then stopped at the crackling sound of a guitar. He sat and listened, muttering unheard songs to the melody.

a little note on Harley, she's undiagnosed and suffers from Anti-social Personality Disorder. She grows an obsession over the Joker as a project that would finally have her recognized. She throws herself into the chemicals to gain a better understanding of Joker when her thesis is proven wrong.

TOO MANY GIRLS

October 8, 1940

Too Many Girls was an RKO film musical based on the stage musical of the same title. It was produced and directed by George Abbott, who had also directed the Broadway production. The music was composed by Richard Rodgers, the lyrics by Lorenz Hart, and the book was by George Marion, Jr. although the screenplay was adapted by John Twist. 

Too Many Girls opened on Broadway on October 18, 1939, at the Imperial Theatre, running to April 21, 1940, and transferred to the Broadway Theatre on April 22, 1940, closing on May 18, 1940. The cast featured Desi Arnaz, Diosa Costello, Marcy Westcott, Eddie Bracken, Richard Kollmar, Van Johnson, and Hal Le Roy. Musical Staging was by Robert Alton, scenery by Jo Mielziner, and costumes by Raoul Pène Du Bois.

The musical takes place in Skowhegan, Maine and Pottawatomie College in Stop Gap, New Mexico.

Synopsis ~ Connie Casey, an energetic celebrity heiress, wants to go to Pottawatomie College in Stop Gap, New Mexico, her father's alma mater, to be near her latest beau, British playwright Beverly Waverly. To protect her, and without her knowledge, her tycoon father sends four Ivy League football players as her bodyguards, Clint Kelly, Jojo Jordan, Manuelito and Al Terwilliger, who sign a contract with an ‘anti-romance’ clause. They also join the college's terrible football team, which immediately becomes one of the best in the country. Clint falls in love with Connie, but when she discovers he is her bodyguard, she decides to go back East. The bodyguards follow her, leaving the team in the lurch. The people of Stop Gap go after them, and they are brought back just in time for the big game. Connie declares her love for Clint, and he leads the team to victory.

PRINCIPAL CAST

Lucille Ball (Consuela ‘Connie’ Casey) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. “My Favorite Husband” eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.

Desi Arnaz (Manuelito Lynch) was born in Santiago, Cuba on March 2, 1917. After leaving Cuba, he formed his own Latin band, and literally launched the conga craze in America.  It was on the set of Too Many Girls (1940) that he and Lucille Ball met. They soon married and approximately 10 years later formed Desilu Productions and began the “I Love Lucy” shows in 1951. Desi and Lucille had two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. At the end of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in 1960, the two divorced. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and died on December 2, 1986 at age 69.

Manuelito: “I'm not conceited. I am the greatest player in fifty years, but I'm not conceited.”

Richard Carlson (Clint Kelly) makes his first and last appearance with Lucy and Desi, although his wife, Mona, was featured as one of Don Loper’s models on “The Fashion Show” (ILL S4;E20) in 1955. 

Ann Miller (Pepe) had appeared with Lucille Ball in three films: Stage Door (1937), Having Wonderful Time (1938), and Room Service (1938). In 1954, she appeared with the Arnazes on “MGM’s 30th Anniversary Tribute”. 

Eddie Bracken (Jojo Jordan) makes his only screen appearance with Lucy and Desi, although he was part of the Broadway cast of Too Many Girls and was friends with the Arnazes off screen as seen in the above photo with Ann Miller and Lucy. 

JOJO: “Well, I'm not exactly wonderful, but I'm awfully attractive in a dynamic sort of way.”

Frances Langford (Eileen Eilers) makes her only appearance with Lucy and Desi. She worked extensively with Bob Hope on his USO tours. 

Hal LeRoy (Al Terwilliger) makes his only screen appearance with Lucy and Desi, although he was part of the Broadway cast of Too Many Girls. 

Libby Bennett (Tallulah Lou) makes her only screen appearance in Too Many Girls. She had also been seen in the Broadway stage production. 

Harry Shannon (Mr. Harvey Casey) appeared with Lucille Ball in 1942′s The Big Street. On “I Love Lucy” he played Jim White the photographer in “Men Are Messy” (ILL S1;E8) in 1951 (above center). Musical fans will remember Shannon as Rosalind Russell’s father in the 1962 musical film Gypsy.

Mrs. Teweksbury says Mr. Casey is one of the richest individuals in the country. He reportedly has $7.50 more than Henry Ford. He is Connie’s father and Chairman of Casey Conglomerated Industries.

Douglas Walton (Beverly Waverly) was a Canadian-born actor making his only appearance with Lucy and Desi. He played poet Percy Shelley in the film The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). He left film acting in 1950, before the advent of television. 

Beverley Waverly is a British playwright.  

Chester Clute (Lister) did four films with Lucille Ball before Too Many Girls and four after it. 

Lister is an alumni of Pottawatomie College, like his boss Mr. Casey.

Ivy Scott (Mrs. Tewksbury) was also in the stage production of Too Many Girls and only did one more film in Hollywood, Higher and Higher in 1943.

Mrs. Tewksbury is the proprietor of The Hunted Stag (or, as Mr. Lister calls it, The Stunted Hag), an Inn where the boys are waiters. 

Byron Shores (Sheriff Andaluz) makes his only screen appearance with Lucy and Desi. He was also seen in the stage production of Too Many Girls. His last film was in 1944. 

UNCREDITED FILM CAST

Iron Eyes Cody (Indian) made a career of playing Native American characters despite the fact that he was of Italian ancestry. He next worked with Lucy and in 1942’s Valley of the Sun, again as an American Indian character. He played an Eskimo in a 1959 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” but is probably best remembered as the Indian that sheds a single tear in the ‘Keep America Beautiful’ ads that ran from 1971 to the 1980s.

Jay Silverheels (Indian) also played a Native American character in Valley of the Sun (1942) with Lucille Ball. He was best known for playing Tonto on “The Lone Ranger”.

Chief John Big Tree (Chief)  

Harry James (Orchestra Leader) also played himself in Lucille Ball’s Best Foot Forward in 1943. With his wife, Betty Grable, he was seen in “Lucy Wins a Racehorse” (LDCH S1;E4) in 1958. 

Van Johnson (Chorus Boy) was also seen with Lucy in the films Easy to Wed (1946) and Yours, Mine and Ours in 1968. He played himself on one of the most popular episodes of “I Love Lucy,” “The Dancing Star” (ILL S4;E27) and played both himself and a look-alike on “Here’s Lucy” in 1968. He was also a member of the Broadway cast of Too Many Girls. 

Johnson has only two lines of dialogue in the film but is often visible in group scenes.

Shep Houghton (Chorus Boy) made two other films with Lucille Ball and was seen in the background of two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and one episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  Houghton was one of the Winkie Guards in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz and a Southern Dandy in Gone With the Wind (1939). 

John Benton (Chorus Boy)

Mildred Law (Coed) appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Return Home From Europe” (ILL S5;E26) playing a TWA flight attendant who attends to Lucy’s cheesy baby, Chester. This was her penultimate screen credit. 

Pamela Blake (Coed) also appeared uncredited with Lucille Ball in Stage Door (1937).

Amarilla Morris (Coed) was seen with Desi Arnaz in the 1942 film Four Jacks and a Jill as the girl in the revolving door. 

Other Coeds: Janet Lavis, Ellen Johnson, Vera Fern, Peggy Drake, Zita Baca, Anna Mae Tessle

Homer Dickenson (Mr. Casey's Butler) immediately followed this film with A Girl, A Guy, And A Gob (1941) also starring Lucille Ball.

Grady Sutton (Football Coach) from 1935 to 1945, Sutton did five films with Lucille Ball.

Dorothy Vernon (Faculty Extra) also did The Bowery (1933) and Valley of the Sun (1942) with Lucille Ball. 

Dan White (Faculty Extra) had a small role in the 1970 TV special “Swing Out Sweet Land” in which Lucille Ball voiced the Statue of Liberty.

WHEN LUCY MET DIZZY

Lucille Ball met Desi Arnaz for the first time at the RKO studio commissary, while Too Many Girls was in rehearsals. She was in full costume and make-up after performing a fight scene for another film, Dance, Girl, Dance (1940, above): she wore a slinky gold dress slit halfway up the thigh and sported a black eye. Arnaz was seated at the same table as director George Abbott, who introduced the two. Arnaz was not impressed by Ball, thinking she “looked like a two-dollar whore who had been badly beaten by her pimp." After the encounter, he asked Abbott to fire Ball from Too Many Girls, claiming she was “too tough and common for the role."  He also advised that her reputation as Queen of the B movies might negatively impact his much-anticipated film debut, advice Abbott thankfully ignored.

That night, Arnaz was rehearsing “She Could Shake the Maracas" when Ball walked in, now wearing a yellow sweater and tight-fitting beige slacks. Not recognizing her, Arnaz turned to the piano player and whispered “Man, that is a honk of woman!"  The pianist reminded Arnaz of his earlier meeting with Ball. Lucille approached them to say hello. "Miss Ball?" Arnaz said, just to make sure that there was no mistake. "Why don't you call me Lucille? And I'll call you Dizzy." 

Lucy and Desi have very little interaction in the film, but when he sees Connie for the first time, he gets weak in the knees and falls to the ground, in awe of her beauty. Despite this, Manuelito’s romance is with Pepe, not Connie. History re-wrote that chapter!

TOO MANY TRIVIA!

RKO paid $100,000 for the rights to the Broadway musical. 

Filming on Too Many Girls began on June 22, 1940.

Camerman Russell Metty briefly took over shooting for Frank Redman when Redman had to attend a funeral.

Uncredited performers Van Johnson and Harry James would go on to be two of the film’s biggest stars, except for Lucy and Desi, eclipsing many of the film’s principal cast like Hal LeRoy, Douglas Walton, and Libby Bennett. 

Lucille Ball’s vocals were dubbed by Trudy Erwin, one of Kay Kyser’s singers. 

Everyone imported from Broadway (except Hal LeRoy) was making their screen debut with Too Many Girls. 

After making the film, Van Johnson and Mildred Law returned to the Broadway production. Instead of chorus roles, Johnson assumed the role of Jojo (originated by Bracken) and Law now played Tallulah Lou, originated by Leila Ernest. 

On Broadway the character of Connie was originated by Marcy Wescott in her final Broadway stage role. 

TOO MANY REFERENCES!

Each of Connie’s bodyguards plays football for an Ivy League college: Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. Manuelito is still deciding on a college, but is considering Princeton, where Clint goes. There is talk about a contentious game that includes Princeton. In Lucille Ball’s radio show “My Favorite Husband” (1948), George Cugat (later Cooper) hopes his future son will play for Princeton, his alum. Coincidentally, Lucille Ball did two plays at Princeton University’s resident theatre company, McCarter: Hey Diddle Diddle (1937) and Dream Girl (1947).

One of the characters mentions movie star Ginger Rogers, one of the top female box office stars of the time. She was also a good friend of Lucille Ball having done five films together. Rogers’ mother Lela tajght acting classes at RKO, later inspiring Ball to create the Desilu Playhouse at Desilu Studios. Rogers played herself on a 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy.” 

Mr. Casey compares his daughter Connie with Lucretia Borgia (1480-1519) was the illegitimate daughter of a pope and his mistress,  a famous beauty, notorious for the suspicious deaths and political intrigue that swirled around her. Today her name has become synonymous with a beautiful, but scheming woman who would stop at nothing - including murder - to get what she wants.  In 1949, Lucille Ball’s friend played Lucretia Borgia for Paramount in Bride of Vengeance.

Although Pottawatomie College and the town of Stop Gap are fictional, Pottawatomie is the name of a Native American tribe, although they were mostly found in the Great Lakes region, not in New Mexico. The Pottawatomie Massacre occurred from May 23 to May 26, 1856, resulting in the death of five pro-slavery settlers north of Pottawatomie Creek in Franklin County, Kansas. This was one of the many violent episodes in Kansas preceding the American Civil War.

 TOO MANY CRITICS!

Too Many Girls premiered on October 8, 1940 at Loew's Criterion Theatre in New York. Critical reviews were generally positive, although Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote that Too Many Girls was “a pleasant, light-hearted and wholly ingenuous campus film" but that director George Abbott "has permitted it to sag in the middle, at which point the thin spots baldly show. If the intention was to be impressive, it has failed. For 'Too Many Girls' is a simple, conventional rah-rah picture, without any place for pretense. And there is not enough to it, on the whole, for Mr. Abbott to squander dancers recklessly."

TOO FAST FORWARD

This film's earliest documented television presentations began in Los Angeles Tuesday May 8, 1956 on KHJ (Channel 9), much to the chagrin of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz who were embarrassed by it, and objected to its frequent showings to no avail.

In 1977, the music of Too Many Girls was rereleased on vinyl with performers Nancy Andrews, Johnny Desmond, Estelle Parsons, and Anthony Perkins! 

The film is referenced in “Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter” a 1991 TV movie about starring Frances Fisher (above) and Maurice Bernard, as well as “Lucy” (2003), another TV film in which Lucy (Rachel York) and Desi (Danny Pino) meet on the set; Desi in his football uniform and Lucy bruised from the filming of Dance, Girl, Dance.

Bob’s Burgers Turns The Back Gas Burner Back On! The Simpsons continue drinking from the historical comedy well.

Fell behind on my Sunday Night animation coverage, mainly because of   wonky network scheduling. I have better working wi-fi now so I can actually watch the episode as they air if they ever air.

Ah Sports, the great Schedule Cleaner that has a tendency to push out episodes into another slot on Fox’s Sunday Night. Which is why the Simpsons’ Treehouse ritual won’t be airing until November, and it’s little consistencies like these that help provide some stability and grounding in these shifting, tumultuous 2020 melting calendar dates.

First off, the promise of quality of this third episode of the season 11 is right in the title“Copa-Bob-Bana.” This is also the second episode in a row with an Opening Storefront gag seemingly tailor made to my interests with a Lou Reed Joke and the Drive-By Van gag being a  Talking Heads pun. Promising. When a Bob’s Burgers episode works it is one of the comfier offerings on the TV landscape. This episode follows the more successful formula of Bob & Linda (A)-Plot night out from the house and Belcher Children (B)-plot mild mannered, slightly gross mischief. 

Throwing Kevin Kline’s Fischoeder into the mix is also a highly potent element in a Bob’s Burgers episode. Pile in, Zach Galifinakis’s Felix Fischoeder along with Bill Hader’s Mickey, while also introducing  the most inconsequential  Fischoeder yet with a cousin voiced by David Wain that also looks like David Wain. The more characters the merrier as far as Bob’s Burgers is concerned and the show is doing a pretty fine job at fleshing out this world and maintaining working relationships with these big wigs, Bob’s Burgers is always kind to its regulars. Most importantly, the show realizes the importance of the Belchers getting the occasional small victory  with Bob earning a full month’s rent. Linda adds on a heart breaking aside about how a month’s rent is more than they ever make in a month that really drives home the working class spirit of this series. 

While the grossness and shabbiness of the Belcher children pool party has a tinge of the pathetic about it especially when it’s being filtered and judged through the higher status Chole Barbash (voiced by Brooklyn 99’s Stephanie Beatriz, who knew!), but they still have friends who indulge in their gross, shabbiness instead of making them feel bad about the nice pool that they lack. A surprising amount of pathos and depth from such a silly and simple premise. 

I am not convinced that the show has figured out a fully fleshed out compelling dynamic between Felix and Calvin other than that Felix is pathetic man child and Calvin is the son that mommy loved more. There are only so many more times that this can play out without it becoming completely stale, but Galifinaki’s skillful comedic acting chops prevent Felix from being straight up insufferable. Having Bob and Linda leave at the big climatic brotherly fight at the end of the episode is satisfying and not too tidy. Bob and Linda have boundaries and know that they have no place or justification to help these feuding rich assholes, whereas a lesser show may have had the Belchers involve themselves more in other people’s problems and play the role of faithful human carpet for their landlord. The episode also subverts the teased big musical number between Linda and Calvin by relegating it to the ending credits, but it’s a really great example of John Robert’s singing performance. Linda is hitting notes with a elegance and charm and bouncing off of Kevin Kline effortlessly and it makes me really sad that we’re not getting that Big Movie Musical anytime soon.

When I first watched the far more messily titled episode 3 Season 32, “Now Museum, Now You Don’t” I straight up despised it. The second episode in a row that refuses to just be an episode of the Simpsons and instead another episode of historical comedy vignettes. This time based around Lisa being sick at home (with Covid?!) flipping through pages of a coffee table book on the history of Western Art.  Oh joy. There’s also, count em and weep, four different musical numbers. Even better. 

The Simpsons and the game of classical spot the reference art appreciation is a time honored tradition.  That said it is still truly jarring to watch an entire episode based around the show’s art department churning out postcards and merchandise for a Simpsons gift shop. This entire episode is an easy on the eyes visual delight that makes it pretty easy to turn your brain off and appreciate the visual overload. 

Quality visuals and art references alone cannot save the episode from itself, because this episode contains a few of the most stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks awful jokes the show has probably ever had that make Family Guy look as sophisticated and subtle as a New Yorker cartoon. Can anyone convince me that Family Guy hasn’t already had a joke involving Little Caesar being stabbed to death by the Noid? I didn’t think so. Another brutal cut-away gag comes in the form in the Marge Simpson styled as Frida Kahlo segment where she does the clunkiest, club footed walk to a cutaway joke involving Bernie Sanders as a baby condoning his “Bernie Bros..I mean Bernie Babies” about their violence and bullying of the other schoolyard children. Really tells you all that you need to know about the rich ivy-league educated white guys  that have always botched this kind of political commentary on the Simpsons, a show that is supposed to subversive and against the status quo. This kind of criticism against Bernie Sanders is not only horribly out of date, but are even more depressing given the reality of the current election. 

The other really groaner forced attempt at a joke happens when Homer Simpsons’ Diego Rivera hopes to get a writing job on Rick and Morty. A joke that basically murders the episode before a truly visually satisfying  over the credits gag of Moe walking through Van Gough paintings singing a song about the Gracie Films “Shushing Lady.” Now I know the show has played around with adding screams and sound effects to this production credit, but I don’t think I have ever witnessed such a meta moment around a production company logo, perhaps ever, and I must give the episode props for that. 

The important takeaway is that while plenty of people don’t care about the Simpsons and know that it has long since lost its luster over a decade ago, rewatching this episode really tempered down my vitriol and through the duration of the episode I found myself basically having a good time. The flat out bad moments of the forced jokes and lazy writing are now becoming far more pronounced and jarring as the series death marches on, but the visual language and expressiveness of the series this late in its run warrants a glance from anyone who likens themselves to an animation fan. I would still recommend that people skip the previous episode and try to give this one a chance. The possibility that this show will trigger a brain aneurysm with some of its choices is a very real, nearly unavoidable reality, but there are some larfs scattered in the ruins. 

Pass, but just barely, and I swear if the rest of the season continues down this streak of vignette driven episodes I will have to abandon this futile endeavor.

In 4x17, the newspaper article that is supposedly reporting on Felicity and Oliver’s engagement, is all kinds of interesting. And I’m gonna break it down. 

“ Moira Dearden Queen and Robert Queen of Star City. The future bride graduated from Starling University with a bachelor of arts degree and a masters degree in computer science.” First, Robert and Moira both died before the city was renamed, so shouldn’t it be Starling City? Second, Felicity went to MIT.  “The groom has a MBA from Starling University and a B Sc. in astrophysics from Star City university.” We know Oliver never graduated college, but he did go to Ivy League schools, which I doubt Starling University is. But I have a couple questions besides that- why the two different university names? Maybe it changed when the city changed its name, okay, but he would have gotten the bachelor’s first, so shouldn’t that be the one from Starling? For that matter why do they list the masters first. Also, where does astrophysics come from? Why that of all things? Can you imagine? Someone write an AU of Oliver as an astrophysicist.  “A September wedding is planned and the couple still lives in their hometown city.” Felicity is from Vegas. Then that paragraph repeats but without the part about Oliver’s parents and without the last sentence. “A September 2016 wedding is planned and the couple will make their home in Star City.” Ooh repetition of the last sentence, reworded slightly. Now the next part is interesting, because it switches to past tense, as if the wedding has already happened. (Maybe it’s what their wedding will end up being!)  “The ceremony was officiated by the Reverend John Keller, who was assisted by the Reverend Alfred LastName, cousin-in-law of the groom.” I would love to meet Oliver’s cousin-in-law Reverend LastName. I bet they have a fascinating dynamic. “Music for the ceremony was provided by the Fine Arts String Ensembly.” I swear it says ensembly. Not ensemble. Not assembly. Ensembly. (which isn’t a word in case you were wondering) “Ceremony readings were performed by Mr. Chris LastName, uncle of the bride, and Mr. William LastName, uncle of the groom.” Wow, Felicity and Oliver’s uncles have the same surname! What a weird family connection. “The bride’s parents hosted a seated dinner and reception at (I can’t read it).” It’s nice that Noah and Donna were able to overcome their differences for this wedding. “On the eve of the wedding the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at the...” Moira?! Robert?! You’re alive!?

Holy Musical B@man Hamilton AU

I was watching Holy Musical B@man as one does at 1 in the morning, and I saw a comment that made a Hamilton reference, you know the part when Batman first finds out the Dick is an orphan and he's all shocked, and there was a comment with that part from Aaron Burr, Sir like "You're an orphan? Of course! I'm an orphan..." ANYWAYS It got me thinking about a HMB Hamilton Au Alex is Batman Washington would be Alfred Lafayette would be Robin!! (Alex and Laf singing Dynamic Duet is the cutest thing ever tell me it isn't.) Jefferson would be Sweet Tooth!!! (It's like the perfect part for him honestly) John as Superman!! (He could totally pull off that costume and also like I could also see him and Alex not initially getting along just because they both have that personality you know?) And Hercules could be the Green Lantern!! (Least problematic out of all of them, makes drinks appear out of no where, avoids problems by walking off like same) Lee would Commissioner Gordon probs Angelica as Posion Ivy!! Maria as Catwomen!! Peggy as The Riddler!! (Eliza's too nice to be a villain) Burr would be Two-Face (because he always wants to be in the Room Where It Happens but no one will let him be) And okay honestly I love this au so much can you even imagine it right now It's seriously the best thing in the world I'm dying

2016-17 TV Season Recap, Part 1

Previous TV Season Recaps – (2013-14 | 2014-15 | 2015-16) 2016-17 TV Season Recap, Part 2 (Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Legion, Riverdale) 2016-17 TV Season Recap, Part 3 (24: Legacy, South Park, Horace & Pete, Stranger Things)

It is time for my annual TV season recap blog. Check out the links above to previous seasons in case you missed them. Like last year I wound up keeping up with a few too many TV shows so I will split this up into a few parts and link them above. For part one, I am going to focus on the four TV shows I followed based on DC Comics properties. Gotham - If you thought last season of Gotham was off-the-rails, then be prepared for a whole new level of craziness for season three. I do not know where to start. How about with my only real qualm being, like in actual comics is that no one stays dead. Thanks to the science experiments of Hugo Strange (BD Wong), he keeps finding ways to bring back past fallen villains of the show, for better or worse. Yup, the writers found another way to bring back Fish Mooney (Jada Smith) for a few more episodes this season, and she is just as dreadful to endure as past seasons. We do have a few new villains join the fray this season, and if you grew up with the classic animated Batman TV show you will be delighted to see Mad Hatter (Benedict Samuel), Poison Ivy (Maggie Geha) and Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow) join the mix of the ever-growing list of Gotham antagonists. The big foil this season is a blood virus that Mad Hatter unleashes upon the city of Gotham that turns people into blood-lusting lunatics. It affects a number of major and minor players on the show this season and watching them succumb/overcome the disease lead to some compelling television.

Other favorite parts of this season for me are the constant love/hate/love relationship between Penguin (Robin Taylor) and Riddler (Corey Smith). Both wind up playing the political field this season before declaring war on each other to amusing results. Another constant dynamic I enjoyed playing out through the season was Barb (Erin Richards) getting more twisted each episode as she bosses around Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) and Butch (Drew Powell) to do her bidding to middling results. Once again, Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue nail the roles of the two primary detectives Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock. Bullock is now the head of Gotham PD and Gordon starts out as a private detective hauling in baddies on his own terms. His season arc is unbelievable if I lay it all out for you now so you just have to tune in to see it. Finally, David Mazouz is really coming into his own this season as Bruce Wayne. He spends most of the season feuding with the underground Gotham society, the Court of Owls. I loved that comic arc from a few years ago and really dug Gotham’s take on that faction. There is so much more that happened this season and other major characters I have not even touched on yet. It does get to be a bit much to keep track of, but last season I just said “screw it” and rolled with whatever Gotham threw in my face and let the recaps starting off each episode serve as a much-needed refresher. I very much enjoyed this season, and my only takeaways are Fish Mooney and a couple other minor villains that did not hit the mark of the many they introduced this season. Also, if you were following week-to-week like me then it got to be a bit difficult to keep tabs on everything since Gotham took two extended midseason breaks this season and I had trouble recalling if certain events transpired in specific seasons. Grade: A

The Flash - This is difficult to admit, but The Flash lost its way for its third season. Last season introduced Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) into the mix, and he just never clicked with the rest of the Star Labs crew. The writers of The Flash took this criticism to heart and doubled down on Wally this season by having him mope around the first several episodes about not having superpowers like the rest of the team. Then he finally gets powers and redubs himself Kid Flash and instantly becomes annoyingly arrogant. He is scripted to be as gut-wrenching as Spider-Man was in the disastrous Amazing Spider-Man 2 from a few years back. Wally West sir, you hereby are the runaway winner for my ‘dopiest character’ of all of TV this past year. The third season of The Flash also doubles down into exploring the 52 Earths of the DC-Multiverse. If you do no recall from my recap from last season, there are 52 Earths/alternate realities where each one has its own version of Team Flash members. It seems now the writers are getting into a new comfort zone where if they need to write off a certain character they will bring in a new multi-verse doppelganger to take their place. Each season has had a different version of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), with season three’s being a very lighthearted, coffee addicted version who calls himself ‘HR.’ HR is a fun addition to the team, but by the end of season three there were so many different multi-verse versions of each character introduced that it got to be groan-inducing whenever they time jumped to a new multi-verse.

The primary villain for season three is the mysterious Savitar. An early season episode shows a flash-forward of Barry’s love of his life, Iris West (Candice Patton) meeting her demise at the hands of Savitar so Barry (Grant Gustin) and the rest of Team Flash spend the bulk of the season trying to prevent that from happening. How they get there and what they wind up doing to try and save Iris is an interesting journey, but it has severe consequences that wound up being a big turnoff and does not have me anticipating season four whatsoever since the ending (light spoilers ahead) essentially implies that the cringe-worthy Kid Flash will be taking over as the new protagonist. There are still a fair amount of decent episodes this season (the annual Christmas party is a feel-good scene that delivers again this season), but I could not help but shake this season as a real letdown. Grade: C Arrow - This is a big redemption season of Arrow after a couple of good, but not great seasons. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) starts the season as the new mayor of Star City and he still somehow manages to moonlight as The Green Arrow in his downtime. With season four leaving the old Team Arrow in disarray, Oliver recruits several new vigilantes to take under his wing for season five. This reminded me of the not-so-desirable new recruits Gordon was in charge of in season two of Gotham as most of these new characters just did not cut it and they become early cannon fodder for season five’s primary antagonist, Prometheus (Josh Segarra). There was one likeable new recruit though that stayed on board the entire season with the codename Wild Dog (Rick Gonzalez), and I dug his story arc as he wound up teaming with Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) for most of the season and the two meshed well together so much that I was always glued to my device whenever the two were onscreen.

Prometheus proves to be one of the major villains that Ollie has ever encountered as the two have several impactful moments throughout the season. They manage to outdo themselves in their final confrontation in a pivotal showdown between the two that had me in goosebumps throughout. Fans that follow Arrow every year know that each episode has flashbacks that lay out what happen each year that Oliver was away for the five years before returning to town in Arrow’s first episode. For the fifth year of Arrow flashbacks Ollie is in Russia teaming up with the Russian gang known as Bratva and his antics there all tie in to how he winds up back at Star City at the very beginning of Arrow. The final flashback scene is another powerful moment that combined with Green Arrow and Prometheus’s final showdown as one of the best season finales in the history of a TV superhero show and capped off one of the best seasons of Arrow yet. Grade: A Legends of Tomorrow - The show featuring the castoffs from Arrow and Flash returns for a slightly more streamlined second season. Instead of focusing on a huge superhero roster of 10, they slimmed the team down to seven Legends this season due to how the first season wrapped up. The season starts off with team captain, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) lost in time and Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz) taking over the captain’s chair to lead the Legends to track Rip down.

Season two has a new team of former Flash and Arrow villains dubbed the Legion of Doom (Whaaaaaaaat a rush!) consisting of Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman). I was a fan of these guys before, so seeing them team up and intentionally ham up the evil villain factor made them the perfect foils for the lighthearted Legends. This was a much improved season that stayed on point better, did not feature love triangle plots that overstayed their welcome and a better group of antagonists. The Civil War zombies episode I imagine will be a hit with a certain audience. Even though they improved a lot this season I would still state Legends of Tomorrow is not a top tier superhero show, as even with a slimmed down roster, there was still a lot to keep track of, and new Legend member Steel (Nick Zano) is a little too cheesy and requires a high tolerance level.
