PENSHAW MONUMENT, SUNDERLAND...

Officially known as the Earl of Durham's monument, the name of 'Penshaw Monument' was soon adopted for this brooding, blackened banner of North East architecture.

Construction occupied just over a full century, after beginning as far back as 1844. The seventy foot high Penshaw Monument is actually modelled on the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the Doric style masterpieces of ancient Athens.

Built entirely from locally hewn gritstone, the then astronomical cost of £6000 was raised entirely by subscription.

Eighteen columns in all- seven on the long sides and four each on the smaller ones- define the parameters of this ageless, arcane slice of northern architecural heritage. Anachronistic to some, it is nonetheless adored by many others. Up close and personal, it has a truly magnificent, quietly overpowering stance.

The views from the lofty, hilltop summit are breathtaking. Encompassing a sea of lush, rippling greenery and the serpentine, glittering expanse of the River Wear, they make the admittedly daunting drain of a walk to the summit quite wonderfully worthwhile.

Visible across the local, northern hinterland from as far as fifty miles away, Penshaw has become so indelibly ingrained on the psyche of the North that it actually features on the crest of the local football team, Sunderland AFC.

Not everybody loved it at the outset. Ironically enough, much of the same, shallow carping would later be rehashed for the opening of Anthony Gormley's 'Angel of The North' back in 1997...

First off, lets start on a clean slate thus erasing all unnecessary damage this unnecessary rebellion has caused... I propose to help those who have suffered property loss and grANT AMNESTY TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT COMMITTED SERIOUS CRIMES BUT SOMehow ended up in the rebellion.
