Thank you so much for putting this together! I just thought I'd add a little context for people who are new to reading Les Mis - specifically some details on the different translations that are out there (I'm sure the Les Mis brick fandom can correct me if I got anything wrong or weigh in with recommendations!): The Hapgood translation this mailing list uses is actually from 1887 - it is neither the most accurate or the easiest to read, but it is most accessible version online thanks to Project Gutenburg. There are also two other contemporary English translations that can be found as reprints, but as far as I'm aware the only free versions online are blurry pdfs. I personally really enjoy the archaic prose style of the Hapgood version, but there are also several more modern translations available for anyone who finds it a bit of a struggle, should they wish to cross reference with another version (this is very valid and understandable). The modern translations are not public domain, but they are all fairly easy to find in print, with the most widely available version varying depending on where you live. There's no real 'best' English translation because so much depends on personal taste, but I think it's good to know there's options out there. The modern translations are:

Christine Donougher (Penguin, 2013) - not the most elegant prose style, but has a lot of very useful footnotes. Imo this is a good all-rounder version. Julie Rose (Vintage, 2007) - the most heavily modernised version. Easy to read but some people find it too slangy, particularly if the 19th century style of the original novel is something that appeals. Has some notes on the historical/cultural context.

Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee (Signet Classics / Penguin, 1987) - this one is based on one of the 19th century translations. Some mistakes, but a good prose middle ground between full 19th century and fully modernised. Norman Denny (Penguin, 1976) - an abridged version, and another compromise between an older style and modern prose. But if you've signed up for this mailing list an abridged version probably isn't what you came here for...
