MANTISES ARE RELATED TO ROACHES??
yes! while they do have differing ecologies—mantises generally are elongate, diurnal predators and cockroaches generally are flattened, nocturnal detritivores—it’s not so surprising if you take a closer look:
Tumblr media
they are one another’s closest relatives, being grouped together in the superorder Dictyoptera, which is revealed by their many shared anatomical features.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you compare the wing structure on these two, you’ll find the veins are very similar. to get a mantis out of a roach, morphologically speaking, all you’ve got to do is elongate the pronotum (roach head shield, mantis ‘torso’), elongate the legs, and enlarge the eyes.
mantises and roaches also both produce “oothecae,” tough eggcases in which eggs are protected from the environment. mantis ooths are often made of sturdy, hard foam, while roach ooths are leathery and purse-like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the raptorial legs of mantises aren’t too greatly modified from a roach forelimb, either. roaches already have spiny legs for digging and defense; with additional spines organized in rows, there’s a powerful grasping foreleg.
additionally, some of the most basal (least changed from the original ancestor) mantises retain a number of very roach-like features, such as flat bodies, a short pronotum, and long cerci (“butt antennae”). Chaeteessa doesn’t even have the long spike at the end of the tibia segment! although I’m not entirely sure if all of these roachy structures are necessary primitive and not secondarily derived, these two do give a good look at how mantises might’ve looked before they evolved the characteristic spindly green forms you recognize today.

Paper Nautilus? Those boys are lovely and I feel like they're SO underrated
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daily Cephalopod #6
These are Argonauts! (Also nicknamed The Paper Nautilus)
To spread some Argonaut love, here's some cool facts!
The females grow much larger than males (about 8 times larger) and they produce a thin eggcase, or their "shell"
Females can mate and reproduce multiple times in their life, while the males only mate once and die shortly after
The males mate by removing their hectocotyl arm, which is then stored in the females eggcase!
The hectocotylus is the modified tentacle on male cepholpods that is used for mating and it was first discovered on an argonaut! (although it was originally misidentified as a parasitic worm attached to the mantle of the female it was discovered on)
The nickname 'Paper Nautilus' is quite misleading, because Argonauts are actually octopuses!
Argonauts have often been observed floating with/on salps, jellyfish, plant debris, driftwood, and even other argonauts at all stages of life!
Argonauts do not reside near the sea floor, they tend to drift closer to the surface and are the only known pelagic octopus!
Like many other octopuses, they have ink, they can change color, and they have venom!

#2119 - Fam. Evaniidae - Hatchet Wasp
Tumblr media
AKA ensign wasps, nightshade wasps, hatchet wasps, or cockroach egg parasitoid wasps. The family name is derived from the genus Evania, itself from the Greek euanios, meaning 'taking trouble easily'. I have no idea why that's appropriate.
All sufficiently well-studied Evaniids are parasitoids of cockroach eggcases, but since only 16 of the known 400 species are sufficiently well-studied, that doesn't mean much. Evania appendigaster and Prosevania fuscipes are both now found worldwide, because they're parasites of worldwide pest cockroaches.
Before 1939 the Evaniidae was a wastebin taxon for any oddly-shaped parasitic wasp, and the infra-order 'Parasitica' wasn't much better. Happily, the Evaniidae, Gasteruptiidae, and Aulacidae have a pretty good fossil record going back to the Middle Jurassic, although they're much less common since the late Cretaceous when the Ichneumonidae and Braconidae took over.

nor was the sea any longer intensely blue and peopled by fleets of nautili, with their delicate mauve-and-pink membranes outstretched as sails.
what could L-S be describing here.... a nautilus does not have an outstretched membrane
Tumblr media
does he mean the part on top... that seems kinda weird
wait wait
The word nautilus is derived from the Greek word ναυτίλος nautílos "sailor", it originally referred to a type of octopus of the genus Argonauta, also known as 'paper nautilus', which were thought to use two of their arms as sails.[6][7]
The argonauts (genusArgonauta, the only extant genus in the family Argonautidae) are a group of pelagic octopuses. They are also called paper nautili, referring to the paper-thin eggcase that females secrete. This structure lacks the gas-filled chambers present in chambered nautilus shells and is not a true cephalopod shell, but rather an evolutionary innovation unique to the genus.[1] It is used as a brood chamber, and to trap surface air to maintain buoyancy.
Tumblr media
its kind of hard to see but these guys have two webbed tentacles that they use to make the "shells" what a strange organism

btw if you don't know how funky whelk eggcases can get, please observe:

those are sometimes called Mermaid's Necklaces, apparently, like the more well known Mermaid's Purse (elasmobranch eggcase).
ones I saw mostly today were more nodular clusters , and were strewn amongst whelk shells at the strandline.

A good look at both the eggcases and the shell. peace and love on planet Babywhelks ...

HI SORRY FOR NOT POSTING YESTERDAY i would've posted something even though yesterday i kinda just drew djmm oc cringe but nonetheless i have treats Today
Tumblr media
attempt two on @linxprime's djmm and i think i did better
Tumblr media
arachnomorphs!!
i would call them a spec evo project, if i actually thought into their evolution more. DJMM/MM-themed spec bio project more like?
The general idea is that after humans have gone extinct (and i still need to plan out HOW for this), mammals actually get dominated by invertebrates and the newest intellligent species on the block are the arachnomorphs, a spidery species that gained their intelligence after adapting to a glacial period, after they began using their eggcase silk to create clothes and keep them warm and that lead to them being even more Crafty with their silk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(little outdated) (also, those aren't antennae. those are pretty much spider brows)
One thing that i find kinda interesting about them is that their gender roles are really strict but gender identity is like. extremely fluid. Like let's say in your tribe and you're a dude, and said tribe is going to war. But oh shit, there's not enough women. our troops are very numbered we can't just go out like this. It's cool - then you could just volunteer to go, as a woman. You'd dull your colors and you'd cover up your abdomen flaps and you'd just head out into war.
Or if there's a festival, and you were a girl. Men are typically the gender aligned with performative acts and entertainment. But you had an amazing voice and you wanted to go on stage. It's cool, you can just go to the festival and sing as a dude, you'd put on some makeup and you'd wear some intricate clothing, and boom. People tend to have second names so they're able to just switch between the two easy peasy.
There's actually 3 intelligent species, the arachnomorphs (DJMM), the mantidmorphs (MM) and the nautilus guys that yet to have a name, which were originally going to be the DJMM-themed species.
Tumblr media
silly indeed

My grasshoppers grew up!!!! 🌾🌾🌾🌾 I was harvesting the seeds out of my yarrow flowers and saw the two of them on top again. (At least, I assume it's the same two as last time, since I don't see any more! You can see the second in the background!) The big one here looks like he's moulting! 🌻🌻🌻🌻 I got a ton of seeds (not that I need them, I have so many still from the package I orded when I planted these!) But I'm hoping they'll be more heat hardy, too. There were a couple more fresh flowers and leaves to harvest as well. I feel bad about evicting the grasshoppers to the lower leaves, but the yarrow really needed trimming. I also found what looks like might be spider eggs? But I'm not 100% sure if it's not just failed flower buds - the fact that there were only 3 and they were all tucked into a leaf fold are suspect tho. (I was hoping they might be grasshopper eggs, but they don't look like what I see on Google.) 🥚🥚🥚🥚 #grasshopper #grasshoppers #insect #insects #bug #bugs #eggcase #eggsac #yarrow #plants #garden #gardening #california #pandemicgardening #zone9b #zone9 #zone9garden #harvest (sa Insect) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGIo3fsgswl/?igshid=1vmohsu1yk501

Tumblr media

We’re in the BBC Wildlife Magazine!
I was delighted to be asked to write a short piece on Citizen Science to be included in the article “Does Citizen Science Make a Difference” in the May 2018 edition of the BBC Wildlife Magazine, which has a circulation of 240,000 people both in the UK and abroad.  I wrote about our Shark and Ray Eggcase hunts over the Winter, and how we “do science” in our own community, using local volunteers and local expertise.  It’s a good partnership with #Shark Trust UK, as they provide us with high quality identification guides to give to our volunteers, and we provide them with the data they need to understand how Sharks and Rays are doing in Welsh waters.  http://www.discoverwildlife.com/
