anyway in the past week the irish government has voted down two motions which would have condemned the genocide in gaza.
i need everyone to stop lionising ireland as if its not also a european government with strong ties to the us. american weapons pass through shannon airport and will continue to, because yesterday the motion to stop that was voted down 83 to 50.
other governments have done much more but somehow people still act as though ireland is the ultimate palestinian ally and exempt from criticism on its handling of palestine bc it was once colonised, even though that past experience clearly isnt being taken into account by the irish government when creating policy.
i live here i know there’s a lot of public support and sympathy for palestine, which is great, but that isnt reflected in government, and i think ireland should be treated like other countries whose governments have done nothing.

Results of the recent Northern Ireland local elections This marks the first time that nationalist parties gained a greater share of the vote than unionist parties, with Sinn Féin becoming the largest party in local government.

Since the presidential elections for the US are happening this year, I’d like to give just a little reminder.
Not everyone on here is from the US. It’s so aggravating to be harassed with messages and anons of people demanding to know why you’re not posting about it, or reblogging info, or making it known who you’re voting for… no one… I’m not from and have never been to the US.
And you wouldn’t think this would have to be said, but only people with US citizenship can vote in your elections. So no, people in Ireland, etc. don’t vote for your politicians.
I’m not even joking when I say tourists come here and ask who you’re voting for/ encourage you to vote for ___. I’ve seen Americans write “vote Trump” in the dust in cars. They walk around in their MAGA merch and insist on talking to you about American politics like you are involved. And idk maybe that’s just a symptom of dumbass trumpies, but I’ve had democrats say the same to me.
You also get the asks that acknowledge that it’s not your country’s election, but still think you should be posting to “raise awareness”… girl everyone in the fucking world knows every bit of info about your elections. It is shoved in our face constantly. Because the internet/ media operates as if America is the entire world.
It’s insane. Like people in our own country will know more about American politics than our own! Americans don’t post or even acknowledge other country’s elections, so why are we obligated to do so for yours?

so wait, since i was just reminded of the recorder thing donna talked about in the giggle, i now have a question for uk ppl: do yall learn the recorder in school? like in a music class? and like how much do yall have music class over there?
#this is a very interesting topic for me as a music educator from the us#ik a guy from ireland and he said there was no music class in schools for him and like not the same country BUT same island#(as northern ireland. not the others in the uk but still)#and its so wild and fascinating music education is a fascinating field and the way we do it in the us seems to be largely vvv unique to us#for clarification on how things are different so ppl have a better idea on how to answer my question lol:#in the us music class is standard in elementary schools and most places have general music until abt 5th/6th grade (year 6/7)#(general music = basics- music games learn recorder SOME notation-reading; often classroom instruments eg boomwhackers claves maracas#orff instruments if you're lucky/from a school district that isnt poor. also some world music)#its less standardized after that and not every school will have music after middle school but concert bands and choirs are both huge here#choirs start right on the heels of general music classes (sometimes start earlier + students elect to be in choir instead of general music)#bands USUALLY start in 4th grade (year 5) but sometimes can be later 5th/6th (year 6/7) or even 7th (year 8) (WAY less common)#depends on the state generally 4th is most common i think (choirs start at around the same time i think so probs 4th but choir isnt my area#orchestras are weird bc theyre a lot less common but can commonly start younger bc of one of the big approaches to music ed (suzuki method)#so like maybe 3rd grade (year 4) maybe 4th w/ band (year 5) but i have a friend who teaches at a private school#& said they have 1st/2nd graders (year 2/3)!! orchestra is also not my area though#also marching bands: vv common! usually just in hs (starting 9th grade / year 10) bc it supports the football team at games#but starting in 8th grade (year 9) is also common (sometimes even 7th / year 8)#theres two different styles: collegiate/show band and competition. former is very rah rah pop music etc; competition is more abstract#show bands are clearly designed to entertain whereas competition is designed to be more impressive and tell a story#so more impact moments abstract shapes/lines on the field and has movements - opener ballad closer (fast-slow-fast)

#OTD in 1969 – Bernadette Devlin was elected MP for Mid Ulster, standing as the Independent Unity candidate; at 21 years old, she was Britain’s youngest ever female MP and the third youngest MP ever.
Devlin was born in Cookstown, Co Tyrone to a Roman Catholic family. She attended St Patrick’s Girls Academy in Dungannon. She was studying Psychology at Queen’s University Belfast in 1968 when she took a prominent role in a student-led civil rights organisation, People’s Democracy. Devlin was subsequently excluded from the university. She stood unsuccessfully against James Chichester-Clark in the…

Over the past few weeks I've seen people praise the Irish Government's response to Israel's actions in the Gaza strip, and while I think saying the Irish government's response is better than the US or the UK's response isn't untrue, it is worth reminding everyone that the current Irish Government has been stonewalling both the Occupied Territories Bill and the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill. The Irish people might have solidarity with the people of Palestine, but that is at best only pandered to by our current government.

1918 Irish General Election
by u/kaioone
Interesting map showing the last general election in Ireland before the creation of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland.
Note those areas which did not receive what they wanted:
(Some of) Dublin voted for Irish unionists, wishing to stay in the UK.
The Tyrone area (Dark green in modern day Northern Ireland) which voted for Sinn Fein, wanting to leave.
The area to the west of the above, in light green, which voted for home rule, but not independence. Now part of the Republic.
Area south of the above, - voted for Irish unionists, wishing to stay in the UK. Now part of the Republic.
Waterford, in light green in the South, which voted for home rule, but not independence. Now part of the Republic.
The 1921 Irish elections would yield similar results but used a different not geographical voting system, with:
Southern: 124 Sinn Fein seats and 4 unionist. Northern: 40 Unionist, 6 Sinn Fein, 6 IPP (Home Rule).
I guess it’s important to remember the areas that were put to one side or the other without the people’s wishes.
