The young man walks down the hallways with a puzzled expression, it was bad enough he had to argue with the guard outside to let him through, but the guy didn't even give adequate directions as where to even go. However, He had peaked into Shauntal's battle room, and upon noticing her absence, he went into the main building itself to continue his search. "Arceus this place is huge..." he mumbled to himself, shuffling along, hoping to avoid any passing security. His hand hovered over his pokeball holster, ready for a battle with any stuffy guard that might try and stop him from his mission. -Mission: find-Aunt-Shaunie-in-this-big-ass-building-and-hopefully-not-get-kicked-out. It was wordie, but he would work on that later. -TheTravelingGymLeader (Nox)
((OFFSCREEN POST))
It was late at night, later than Grimsley usually stayed at the Pokemon League headquarters. The other Elite Four members had gone home not too long ago, leaving Grimsley to do one last check around the large building before he locked up and headed back to his own home.
He wasn’t really expecting to find anything in the dark halls, so one could imagine his surprise when he noticed the sound of footsteps echoing in the otherwise silent halls.
He narrows his eyes, hand hovering over the Pokéball containing Celeste, his Bisharp. He waits, listening intently as the footsteps grow louder.

Yonaga Clan
Tumblr media
The Yonaga Clan is another one of the ancient hero families who have been around since the dawn of heroics-- underground heroics being their specialty. They are of Afro-Asian descent. The clan are descendents of the first Nox and as such carry the Quirk Tsukuyomi in their blood.
How the clan is run is that when a member comes of a certain age (usually late 30s to early or mid 40s), they are called to join the inner clan. The inner clan is made up of the older, more elite Yonaga members and from there they oversee the daily life of the other members, business affairs, and more.
Like any other family, their trademark feature is that they look like cosmic entities.
History
During the early days of heroics when people like Mother Nature and Susanoo basked in the sun, there were so few heroes who operated at night much less did underground work. Enter Nox I, who wanted to deviate from his peers and forge his own path. As a result, he did underground heroics and is considered the father of the branch.
Nox I operated at night, which was useful considering his Quirk. As time went on, he became a legendary figure in the rising underground scene and even after his death he remained an icon for all future underground heroes.
It would be his son, Nox II, who would establish the Yonaga clan. He knew that their name was legendary in the branch and that this was the kind of heroics meant for them, even seeing it as a birthright.
Notable Members
Umeji Yonaga | Nox XI: Umeji is the son of the previous Nox, Nox X, and the father of Kureko Yonaga (who will become Nox XII). Having fully recovered from the tragic suicide of his previous wife Suki, he turns his attention to his hero career and taking care of his son. Later on in the continuity, he remarries Stellara (Hoshimi Sorakami) and eventually fathers two children with her in addition to her children from her previous marriage.
Kurobi Yonaga | Nocturne: Kurobi is Umeji's sister. She operates in America due to how much she's been compared to her brother growing up (which annoys her to no end).
Kureko Yonaga: He is the son of Nox XI and the late Suki Yonaga. Kureko is 11 years old and is currently being homeschooled by a tutor the family hired. In the future, he will become Nox XII, succeeding his father.
Trivia
Yonaga, the family name, means "long night". Fitting to their nighttime Quirks and nighttime operations.
Nox I never operated in a proper agency, instead doing so in a clock tower that would later by passed down to the next Nox.
The Yonaga clan is the first family to have a hero name that is passed down as a title.
Most of the members married either Black people or other Blasians to keep up their lineage pure.
As always, my mutuals are allowed to make more members

What's the difference between AMO and UCRT? In what situations does Unity deploy one or the other?
AMOs (Agilely Mental Operatives) are a term used for any of Unity’s Ment field agents. They usually work either solo with an MIV (aka remote strategist), or in a small team. They have “facenames” that reflect how they fight:
K is Nox, because they prefer nighttime missions and blackouts.
One of the options for Sally is Delphi, because she predicts the future.
Gray’s facename, before he inherited the role of Fortitude, was Deflect. For deflecting bullets. (AMOs get to pick their own facenames, and Gray is not the most creative.)
UCRT (Unity’s Crisis Response Team) is a seven-member team filled with elite AMOs who have additional training to act as their own MIVs. They have more freedom in making calls during missions, and are sent to deal with the highest level Ments or any other crisis considered too dangerous for standard AMOs. UCRT takes on global missions, whereas most other AMO teams stay local.
AMOs usually need to have a Pollard Score 8 or above, and most UCRT members are 9s and 10s. UCRT members also take on face names and team roles that have been passed down (although not usually from father-to-son like John and Nick). These names reflect why they fight instead of how: Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, Hope, Equality, Peace, and Integrity.

I haven't been active much or involve with og fan cont lately for personal reasons. Writimg for TF gets really overwhelming for me and my cont wasn't all that interesting, which is true I'm afraid.
So, I'm going to post and reveal major spoilers I had for this cont as chances of writing are unlikely:
1. The Thirteen Primes are different with my own interpretations for this cont rather than the canon version. Vector Stigma is not a Prime but more of architect to create the Vaults for the Primes to hide their secrets and artifacts.
These Prime are:
Lux Prime (warrior of Light), Solus Prime (warrior of Flame), Onyx Prime (Guardian of Beasts), Obscurus Prime (Guardian of Outliers), Zosmius Prime (Alchemist Healer), Clio Prime (Archivist and Storyteller Guardian), Logos Prime (Guardian of Time and Space), Nox Prime (warrior of Night), Arachne Prime (Guardian of Insecticon), Zinta Prime (Guardian of Warlocks), Scientia Prime (Guardian of Science), Froya Prime (guardian of Shieldmaiden), Nexus Prime (Guardian of Titans).
Any talks of the Thirteen Primes are considered as a myth and anyone would get into trouble with the Functionists on questioning the Emperor’s motives or openly discuss about the Thirteen Primes.
2. The Quintessons do appear in this, but they are not squid creatures. They take on heavy inspirations of Reapers from Mass Effect, and while in history there mentions of Quintessons mysteriously wiped out, but the truth is? They were repurposed and reformatted into dangerous sentinet machines served as the fleet with Emperor Zeta Prime as its leader to command.
The Quintessons were responsible for Earth's destruction to an apocalypse state and the extinction of humans. Only 20,000 cyborg humans were left alive and taken refugees on Hedonia. There was supposedly other transport evacuation ships leaving Earth but sadly the ships were caught by the Quintessons.
3. Minerva is actually Quintessa... The Quintesson Empress and sorceresses. Her original body was destroyed and in ruins, leading to Zeta having to rebuild her into a techno-organic. This is the reaspn for why Minerva has a human form due to the dna imprinted into her for appearance. She wears the mask to hide herself.
4. Red Energon exists as the counter to Dark Energon. Red Energon is the sole reason how Roxie survived Dark Energon infection caused by interrogation under Rung's electrocution. Deadlock used his greatsword onto Roxie to save her life.
5. At some point in story when the mask breaks and exposed the Empress' identity, Roxie get the shock of her life and questioned Minerva's deep connection with her. The truth is... Minerva is technically Roxie's mother through human DNA. It occured when she absorbed dna from Minerva's after Deadlock discovered her existence and brought her to life.
6. Deadlock has the matrix of Lux Prime. The matrix was the sole reason on him sired Roxie through spark donor.
7. Roxie is a warlock, like how Minerva is a Sorceress. Her powers were awaken after coming in contact with Zinta Prime's artifact within the vault on Hedonia after Ravage lead her to it. Ravage became her familiar.
8. Windblade will discover who betrayed her and her coven resulting in her being the last cityspeaker and Caminus outlier. Lightbright is her sworn enemy after Lightbright sold the coven out to the Functionists. Windblade wielded the Staff belong to Mistress of Flame. Windblade carried the matrix of Solus Prime.
9. Perceptor had a complicated history and an on/off relationship with Pharma. Perceptor was a professor at the academy knowing to refugee outliers not discovered by the Functionists. Perceptor carried the matrix of Scientia Prime.
10. The main lineup will be separated away from Decepticons to pursue on their main mission to assist Roxie and Deadlock on finding the vaults. They went to infiltrate the Functionists' HQ on Hedonia to steal a ship so they can leave for Earth to resume their mission. Galvatron and his reinforcements helped out by distracting the Functionists to allow the main crew to escape.
Said main lineup were: Roxie, Deadlock, Windblade, Perceptor, Grimlock, Ravage, Shatter, Slipstream, Knockout, Soundwave, Chromia and Elita-One as the crew's leader.
11. Elita and Damus had history together as the famed gladiatorial warriors.
12. Shatter seeked retribution onto Overlord due to the massacre of her own clan by his hands. She was the last surviving member.
13. Slipstream was left to dead after her Seeker crew were killed in an ambush, making her the sole survivor. However, Starscream was missing at that time.
14. Starscream was declared MIA by Galvatron, when in truth... Starscream was shadowplayed and became Jetfire.
15. Deadlock was another victim of Shadowplay.
16. Knockout was a victim of minibot trafficking within her home city. She wanted to pursue her own dream to become a medic but was promised false lies by slavers about helping her achieve dream career. Knockout was rescued by Cyclonus and was trained by Nickel as a medical assistance. She is now the main CMO of Elita's team.
17. Chromia was a former member of the Wreckers, a neutral aligned subgroup at first. Sadly, the Wreckers allied with the Functionists and branded Chromia as a traitor and Kup was forced to retire from the position as the leader due to conflicts.
18. The main crew will find Trypticon or Omega Supreme, who was reformatted, and disguised into a warship on Earth. Trypitcon/Omega Supreme's awakening had ruffled Zeta Prime's feathers. Their power would wipe out the Quintesson fleet.
19. Way later into chapters would see Roxie get captured by the mercenaries: Arcee, Cliffjumper and Tailgate. Tailgate insisted on wanting to keep Roxana as a 'pet' but Arcee favoured the high demand rewards by giving Roxie over to the Functionists for credits and get rich. Damus and the Division arrived to collect Roxie, but discovered that the mercenaries were holding back in the delivery. Mostly because a techno-organic with human dna are so rare, and the mercenaries, after Tailgate's desperate begging and obsession, decided to change their minds and keep Roxie for themselves, they hidden her away. This forced the Division to attack the mercenaries and search the place apart by force. Roxie did escaped from the mercenaries but she was eventually caught by Damus in a cat-and-mouse chase and sang a lullaby to prevent her escape. This would had counted as the most frightening experience for Roxie to endure on her own.
At the same time, Deadlock was in anguish over Roxie gone missing and the crew began to search for her tirelessly, only for Soundwave to successfully tracked her through a tracking device that Perceptor left in her hearing aids.
20. The main crew will discover the truth about the Allspark within Cybertron core locked away by Zeta Prime was a fake and Zeta used the matrixes of the fallen Primes to forge Cybertronians into their own image. The real Allspark was well protected and hidden within a secret vault.
21. The Division members are Warrior Elites, and some are actually Phase Sixers. They are fiercely loyal to Empress Minerva, more than Zeta Prime, to no fault.
22. Grimlock would avenge their Dinobots and Predacons fellow beastformers by seeking retribution onto Scorpnok for experimenting on them.
23. After prologue, Minimus Ambus had crossed the line with Minerva and was revealed as a spy for Zeta Prime after going against her orders. Minerva opted on executing him but instead she had another idea in mind for punishment was domestication.
24. Zeta Prime is Unicron. Unicron is not a planet-eater... they are infact a God deity.
that’s all I have got with major spoilers ideas.

WIP Page: [Page Still In Progress]
Tumblr media
Concept:
Super-powered humans have always walked among us, from the beginning, and they will until the end. The year is 2041, and the International Academy of Superhumans controls the day to day life of these extraordinary beings. Those who stand with the Academy are your heroes, the ones who save the day. They protect normals from the villains, those who have turned their back on the organization and are hell-bent on destroying humanity as we know it. As tensions rise, and alliances form, the lines between hero and villain begin to blur.
Basic info
Setting: NYC, 2041, Alt. Earth
Genre: Action/Adventure, Futuristic but not really, some sci-fi, some fantasy
Number of Characters: ~14
Current Stage: 1st Draft
Representation: POC, LGBTQ+, polyamory, Islam, Brujería, Paganism, Women Doing Cool Science, mental illnesses
TW: Death, murder, gore/injury, fighting, fire, telepathy, homophobia/transphobia, panic attacks, anxiety attacks, bones, plague masks, more that I’m probably forgetting
Main Characters:
Topaz Roberts, aka FireBall [wip]
After the death of Goldenson, the Academy needed a new model hero, one to follow School Teacher’s every lesson and command. FireBall soon filled the void, stepping into the shoes of his father and taking his mantle, and the fire powers that came with it. He stood up against and eliminated the notorious Árbol Terror and Quantum Rift, and with NightSong at his side, still protects humanity from the wrath of Hueso Blanco and Morpheus Nox.
Topaz Roberts was never meant to be the hero. They weren’t supposed to find the mask of their late father laying on their desk, two days after his death. Fighting what seems like an endless war has made them bitter and cold, they’ll admit, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. If they can finish their senior year of high school at the elite Westmoreland Boarding School, they can escape the grasp of their controlling grandfather. However, as they get assigned a job they refuse to complete, an opportunity pops up, an enticing offer from the very man they’re trying to kill.
Martin García-Flores aka Hueso Blanco
Hueso Blanco was expelled years ago, for spreading propoganda against the Academy. He then joined forces with his ex-partner Árbol Terror (formerly ÁrbolTierra) and the murderous Quantum Rift to tear open a black hole in the space-time continuum, and wreak havoc on the planet. After the death of both Árbol Terror and Quantum Rift, Hueso Blanco joined forces with the new owner of Quantum Rift’s mantle, a young villain by the name of Morpheus Nox. He’s proven to be stronger than the Academy ever anticipated, with Hueso Blanco at his side. Currently, FireBall and NightSong are working on tracking down and putting an end to the duo’s wrath.
Martin García-Flores is a workaholic, to say the least. When his parents were murdered by Academy enforcers (members of the Academy without powers), Martin dropped out of high school to take care of his younger brother, Elias. He’s done all he can to protect and cushion Elias from the Academy, but they don’t seem to understand that Elias is a citizen in this fight, having had his mind erased of Martin’s role by the ex-villain Mind Killer. As all seems hopeless, and the Academy closes in, Martin makes a last-chance offer to the very hero trying to kill him

Zagrie Grjene
The Zagrje Grjene: the Zagrjene are a technologically advanced, space traveling species, insectoid and multi-limbed, with two legs and four arms, and some minor cannibalistic habits. Zagrjene is often used for conciseness. Due to their interstellar and interplanar travel, there have been occasional skirmishes between Githyanki and Zagrjene exploratory vessels. Githzerai have occasionally exchanged information and educational advances with the Zagrjene, though these instances are far and few between. Where exactly the Embracers come from is uncertain.
Technologically advanced, though they prefer melee combat, they have great ships capable of interstellar and interplanar travel. Their primary weapons tend to be four swords, with common variations being two swords with spears, axes, or maces in the secondary set of hands. For those who do prefer ranged, throwing knives the size of what would equal daggers for most other races, dual long bows which generate their own arrows, or for those who prefer being able to hide things, small compact energy pistols the size of hand crossbows which pack the punch of heavy crossbows.
They have wings on their back, inside wing casings similar to locusts or grasshoppers, and their faces are gaunt and long, with six small eyes in place of two, and no protruding nose. Their mouths are hybrid of mandible and mammalian masticating mechanisms. The average height for a Zagrjene is 6 ft 5 in. The birth-givers, known as “davarojn”, tend to be half a foot to a full foot taller and then the fertilizers, known as “voj-gno”. Their reproductive cycle is not unlike a hybrid of human and insectoid in which one carries the fertilized egg internally and then gives birth to live young, typically 7-15 at a time. The reason the davarojns are so much taller, is due to the incubation chamber being so large, able to hold up to 15 Zagrjene young at a time. However, one notable difference is that an egg can be fertilized then injected into a host at which point it will change its genetic makeup to be that of the host species but still retain many Zagrjene qualities. These include enhanced speed, enhanced strength, and a tendency towards melee combat. If the implanted race does not have either wings or 4 or more limbs, the Zagrjene, mutate so that their body does, though the additions will be retractable so that the Zagrjene can blend in with the host race. A grouping of Zagrjene young is referred to as a brood.
The strange and most interesting aspect of Zagrjene reproduction is the Nox. Nox are very rare, very powerful, genetic variants of the race, often possessing supernatural abilities for energy manipulation, even greater speed, and strength, as well as a passive ability to detect the thoughts of nearby Zagrjene. The Nox are their commanders, their spies, their most powerful and elite members. Whilst all Zagrjene speak Common, the Nox speak all languages fluently, able to pick up languages just by being nearby other individuals, with a less intense psychic connection. This also means that they tend to pick up speech practices and accents from those nearby when they first learn a language. This also comes into effect the first time they come into contact with a native speaker of a language that they have learned through study or innate ability, so a Nox may have an accent from another planet due to them being the first contact point for common or some other language that the Nox knew inherently but had not yet made a native speaker. (So, a Nox who has not been around any other creatures that speak Common crash lands into the Deep South, and they will most likely end up with an intensely hick accent when speaking Common)
The other strange thing about The Nox is their birth process. The Nox are also known as “The Deadly Stillborn”. This is due to the fact that, due to their importance, they have evolved to subvert the growing up process. Whilst new Nox are born rarely, more often than not, a Nox birth is due to a Nox being slain or dying of natural causes, and their soul is searching for a new body. In this state, they will inhabit the most recently formed Zagrjene fetus within a couple hundred lightyears and will be carried to term by the davarojn or injected host. They will be born much like any other of the race carrying them, until they open their eyes some five minutes after they are born. For Nox in the process of rebirth, once they open their eyes, the first sapient that they make eye contact with will die. The Nox will cause their brainwave activity to cease, and replace its brainwaves with the Nox’, effectively replacing its thoughts and mind with that of the newly reborn Nox. At this point the infant body will cease all biological functions and be sent to the recyclers, or “rezjkon”. The Nox don't care if a body has been injured by time or age, for they can heal these things, so it does not matter to The Nox who they are replacing , and in fact they are unable to stop this process even if they wished to. Therefore it is commonplace for elder Zagrjene to be the ones in charge of midwife-esque duties and attending the newborns, so that if any Nox are born, it will hopefully not be somebody of inordinate significance that gets replaced and killed. There is no way to tell if a davarojn is carrying a Nox or another normal Zagrjene before the birth which is why they have this protocol. If it is the nearest fetus, a Nox will go into an implanted egg that is not a member of The Zagrjene species. Once fully formed and ready to be born, said Zagrjene will rapidly age to the point of maturity for said race, in the span of about six months, regardless for the normal rate of maturity for the species.
The primary significant trait of a Nox, is that they do not lose memories whenever they are reborn or killed. This means there are Nox that have memories from near the beginning of the species, or at least once they had developed to the point of becoming the Zagrjene that are known today. This is what makes the Nox so incredibly valuable to the Zagrjene, before and above all else.
The Zagrjene also abide by strict code of rules that dictate how they handle different situations. For example, if a prisoner has challenged their captor to a fight for their freedom, both parties are considered in a duel, up until the actual event takes place. Therefore, if at any time either side dies before the actual physical contest, the other side will be declared the winner by default. Normally, it is not the Zagrjene that dies outside of the duel, if nothing else they have time to wait, frequently living at least two centuries, Nox living until something external takes them out.
As a society they are vaguely matriarchal, similar, as some have pointed out, to humanoid evil bees or wasps with a queen, known as the Etherea, that is both a davarojn and a Nox. The rest of the structure largely depends on what the Etherea decides is important and necessary at the time, creating structures and substructures and dissolving them as they see fit.
The Zagrjene have no real concept of gender other than the physiological differences between davarojns and voj-gnos, everyone being equal aside from the Etherea and the Nox. The physiological differences between the davarojns and voj-gnos have not led to any psychological differences, other than the davarojns being able to tell exactly how much time until they are going to give birth. The voj-gnos have no such mental ability as they do not have any time sensitive biological functions. The main identity or differentiation for The Zagrjene come from their role in their society and their function. A scientist will be of higher stature than a janitor or a foot soldier, for example. Most of these stations are assigned at birth, as often reproduction is not done for sake of perpetuating a family legacy or name, but because two Zagrjene have features that the Etherea wish to combine in the offspring.
Pronunciation:
Davarojn: dah-vah-RONE
Etherea: EETH-ear-EE-uh
Nox: knocks
Rezjkon: ray-zuh-con
Zagrjene: Zah-grain
Zagrje Grjene: Zah-gray g-RY-un

i saw you have pokemon ocs, do you have plans to design your own region? :0
i actually already designed my own region - well, two, actually, since i have way too much free time on my hands haha. they’re known as the fairel region and the ordela region respectively; they’re opposites of each other in the sense that fairel is deeply enrooted in history and overflowing with nature, whereas ordela is home to technologically advanced metropolises and is overrun with crime and general disorder. fairel was created out of my long-held desire to experience a true open-world pokemon experience, chock full of beautiful locations to explore to your heart’s content without having to adhere to the same, linear routes and overall lack of content... and ordela was created solely so i could write a darker plot, similar to that of pokemon colosseum.
here are the gym leaders + elite four members for both of the regions!

Some Facts
The Noxraa sector is a strange one, it has a staggeringly high psyker birth rate, so much so that psykers make up a very significant portion of their armies. Additionally, it has a certain breed of abhumans called Tacticians that are tolerated due to their absurdly high tactical intelligence and unique psychic abilities This is allowed and overlooked because the sector is a war zone in constant need of reinforcements, and within its heart lies the ancient Forge World Nox Factoria, which produces Titans, Power Armor and Power Weapons. Taking away their psykers or Tacticians would cripple their army and freely give this Forge World to the enemies of man, as well as a Warlord Titan in its final stage of construction.
Meria keeps a good bond with her adoptive father, Graron Hanmar, a decorated veteran commander. Her Adopted mother, Seharen Hanmar had died peacefully of old age.
Meria is a biomancer who happens to naturally use blood as a resource and a weapon. Though in the Noxraa sector this is called blood magic, it is not actually a dark chaos power, despite the raised eye brows of many inquisitors.
She is known to have made temporary alliances with Xenos against common enemies on many occasions, as well as non-aggression pacts, she even has a reputation of keeping her word in these situations
Meria has a number of quite visible and serious scars, here’s a list of them and their stories (this post is in league verse, but essentially the same happened in 40k verse)
She has a tattoo on her right shoulder, the stylized head of a ravenous wolf from the side in black ink.

The Trifarian Legion
List of the members that I have mentioned so far, they might appear in RPs where Meria is with her troops (this list is from her league verse, but it works)
Meria and her lieutenants are all fully equipped with power armor and power weapons. Due to the sector’s high psyker density, they have their own pattern for this equipment that is able to channel the user’s psychic powers to improve protective and offensive capabilities.
Meria’s two best lieutenants are Vernan and Merdo. Vernan is a Tactician and he is the true mastermind behind many war plans, while Merdo is a living monument to indomitability, often mistaken for a Space Marine by those who never saw one
The elite of the Trifarian Legion often consider each other family
Meria is not the boss who watches over the training and throws orders out from behind the battle. She is the leader who personally fights her troops in training and leads the frontline’s charge. She is the friend who drinks with them and plays dice, who goofs around and laughs with them at dinner. She firmly believes that outside duty, everyone is the ‘same rank’ until proven otherwise.

Lore-building
Meria’s parents died before she could remember them. She lived a few weeks on the streets of Trifaris’ capitol, scavenging, stealing and hiding from the older street kids. One day, General Graron Hanmar visited the capitol to discuss the future of a military operation with other high ranking leaders. On his way back home, a group of screaming street kids ran out an alley, bloodied and wounded. He waved to his body guards to follow with caution, and went to investigate the danger, finding a beaten child, laying absently on the crimson-sprayed stone, circled by animated tendrils of blood. Graron approached her as his bodyguards dispelled the “magic”, and took her to his ship. When she came to her senses, he questioned her. She didn’t remember how she scared the kids away, nor how she got so bloody. Seeing as she unknowingly had a dangerous gift, had no family, and he was unable to have children, Graron took her in.
Under Graron’s arms, Meria prospered. She grew to display skills in both combat and tactics, and as such, started to train as a warrior. Eventually she discovered her psychic gifts as well, and learned to make good use of it both in combat and outside it. Refusing to accept any level of mastery as ‘good enough’, she rose through the ranks through display of earned merit and honed talent, and eventually became a general in the Trifarian Legion.
The day Graron came

[fic] professional development expenses [day 1: learning]
Pairing: Aranea/Luna Rating: G Summary: When Aranea and Luna first meet, Aranea's on the job.
Additional Notes: For @ffxvrarepairsweek. EDIT: Now at AO3!
So, being an Elite Imperial Officer with a special commission from the Chancellor of Niflheim himself had both its perks and its downsides, Aranea had decided.
Sometimes, the job was cushy. Sometimes, the job was a drag.
Sometimes, it managed to be both at once — and right now, standing at ease just inside the door of the white marble-floored parlor of the penthouse suite of Fenestala Manor above the cloud-covered valleys of Zoldara Henge, it was one of those times.
The older Fleuret was off having a pissing contest with the Chancellor again. She'd just happened to be in-between missions, all her subordinates were off on pass; the Emperor had been all like sneer sneer someone to guard the Oracle slime drawl transport her keep her safe snide snide she is in your hands when she'd reported in, and so now Aranea —
— Aranea was watching over the kid, who was curled up miserably on the white leather couch, her eyes rimmed red and her nose pink, half-heartedly fluffing her pet dog behind the ears as she pored over a datapad with an itinerary for the Oracle's next tour on it, and —
— and she was starting to feel almost as awful as Lunafreya Nox Fleuret looked.
She wrinkled her nose and adjusted her weight to her other foot.
The day was dreary outside the tall crystal-glass windows, sky a flat shade of blue-slate with just a tinge of silver light to the west. The lofty corridors inside were cut off from the stifling summer fog, but stuffy nonetheless — the air in the grand manor was cool and scented like flowers throughout, but slightly stale, and the rooms were in need of an airing-out. If it had been up to Aranea, she would have cracked open a window or the doors to the balconies. But the Oracle, it seemed, caught chill easily.
Lunafreya for her own part had barely noticed Aranea coming in the door, and she still barely seemed to notice her now. The girl had grown up around guards and probably thought of them as more furniture than anything, Aranea reasoned. Aranea had taken note on her initial check through the spacious flat of the flatscreen television — off, and dust-free in the corner — and the alcove full of old books — half of one of shelf was partway through being packed into a crate, maybe time for a stock rotation? — and the kitchenette, clean and with just enough space to make some coffee and biscuits. There was a beautiful old wooden writing desk in the corner, massive and polished and ink-stained; next to that, an easel, palette and brushes and little pots of unopened paint, and envelopes of thick stock paper. Speakers sitting in a nook in the wall were presumably wired to play music from a datapad, though nothing was playing now. There was always the buzzer for the servants, set in a gold-plated panel next to the door.
Plenty to do on a day in, and plenty of room to enjoy it all.
Lunafreya hadn't moved in hours.
Hadn't gotten up for a stretch, for a glass of water, for a sweater, for the bathroom. Aranea was supposed to be standing at attention, but she was feeling fidgety just looking.
That was some inhumanly intense focus. Either that, or the girl was just feeling too awful to leave her spot.
As Aranea watched, Lunafreya coughed delicately, pressing her knuckles to her mouth. Then she took a deep breath, bent slightly, and made a truly horrible hacking noise that didn't sound like it should've come from a human being so tiny. The dog jumped a little under her palm.
Aranea shifted uncomfortably and cleared her throat.
"Uh, hey. Kid." She probably shouldn't be calling her that. Did the Oracle have a title or something? "Kid, you okay?"
Lunafreya looked up, blinking, bright-blue eyes like searchlights hunting for the source of the noise. Aranea waited patiently for her to conclude that yes, the lamp was speaking, the lamp being a five-foot-five leather-clad Imperial airborne division commodore working overtime.
"Ah," Lunafreya said, a tad embarrassed. She ducked to her work again, swiping something on the pad. "Yes. I apologize. I've — I've had a bit of a cold."
Lunafreya didn't seem exceptionally bothered about being spoken to. Aranea figured she could push her luck a little.
"I thought Oracles were supposed to be healers," Aranea said.
Lunafreya looked up again quickly, flushed, and Aranea was sure for a dismayed moment that she'd gone ahead and crossed a line of some sort.
But Lunafreya merely opened her mouth and said, defiantly, "This is nothing. Many are worse off. My discomfort is nothing in the face of the suffering inflicted by the Scourgfffchoo — "
Aranea gave up standing at attention and lunged to fetch a box of tissues from the coffee table.
"Thank you," Lunafreya whispered, muffled, and took the proffered box delicately.
Aranea sighed as Lunafreya blew her nose. With her knees to her chest, the girl looked — really small and kind of helpless. It made Aranea nervous for reasons she couldn't put a finger on.
"Listen, can I get you something? You want like a tea, or..." That was about the extent of what Aranea could offer here. "There are servants around here, right? Hey," Aranea said, cracking the door open and craning her neck to see if anyone was in the hallway outside. "Hey!"
"No, no, please don't, they needn't — " Lunafreya looked like an anak calf in headlights as she struggled to her feet and turned her offended dog off her lap onto the floor. "I wouldn't be able to enjoy it anyway," she said.
Aranea frowned. "Soup? Blanket?"
Lunafreya hesitated. "I haven't — there are blankets in the closet down the hallway," she said, voice catching.
Aranea strode down the hallway like she knew where she was going and called back over her shoulder. "Soup? What do you like, tomato? Mushroom? Eusciello?"
"Tomato," Lunafreya admitted. "I don't want to bother — "
Aranea was already poking her head back out in the hall. "Hey, can we get a pot of hot tomato soup for the Oracle?" She could feel Lunafreya glaring at the back of her head, but the staff member passing by with a cart in the hallway outside looked gracious enough about it. Aranea tightened her jaw resolutely. "Two bowls, two spoons, pepper and grated cheese — bread rolls, a basket of bread rolls maybe? And butter and jam? Thanks."
Lunafreya looked furious when Aranea withdrew.
And there was the closet; Aranea ducked inside before the girl could try to chew her out and break into a coughing fit instead.
"You didn't have to do that," Lunafreya said faintly from down the hall.
Aranea ignored the feel of her ears reddening at the tips as she rummaged through a chest of throws and knits. Some items looked like actual fur, folded neatly and never touched. It was incredible how everything here looked both brand new and like it cost more than Aranea made in a year. "You heard me, I ordered for both of us," Aranea said. "I wanted some too, just — just, uh, take it from my paycheque." She pulled out a silver-and-periwinkle wool throw that felt heavier than looked and shook it out. No dust. Obviously.
She re-emerged to find Lunafreya sitting back on the couch with a wince and a stretch, pad set aside on the coffee table, her dog curled beneath her ankles. The creature was really... really well-behaved.
Aranea handed the bundle of blanket over. She settled on the armchair adjacent as Lunafreya gratefully draped it across her lap; the dog sniffed and prodded the corner of it, then slipped underneath.
"So. Busy?" Aranea hedged, nodding at the pad.
"Yes," Lunafreya admitted. "I have an upcoming speech needs to be approved by public relations by the end of the week."
"Nobody drafts those things for you?" Aranea's maybe heard one of them, and probably tuned it out halfway, but wow. She did recall it being less... Imperial, than she would've expected. Better than the tripe the Emperor spat out on national television every quarter. Less repetitive, less empty, less insulting.
"They have offered speechwriters. But I like to — speak to the people, when I speak to the people," Lunafreya said, sounding very tired. "I don't like to recite lines."
Aranea nodded. "From the heart," she said, jokingly.
"Yes," Lunafreya said, completely solemnly, and Aranea felt something inside her cower and wilt under the intensity of it.
Aranea scratched her neck. "So... should I... I guess I should leave you to it?"
"It's fine. It's in the best shape it'll be between now and then," Lunafreya sighed, leaning back. "Tell me about yourself. Commodore Highwind? How long have you been with the military?"
Aranea was caught off-guard for a second by the fact that Lunafreya even remembered her name. "Oh. Well. A while now," she said, floundering under Lunafreya's curious gaze.
A knock at the door interrupted her. Thank the sun. Aranea jumped up to retrieve both the meal cart and a shred of coherence, from wherever that'd gone.
By the time they'd settled in with the soup and rolls spread out on the coffee table before them, Lunafreya knew about Aranea's squadron, and her favorite foods growing up, and the difficulties in getting ahold of standard-issue armor her size. Aranea knew that Lunafreya did have a title, but to call her Luna instead.
"Luna," Aranea said. "What do you do for fun around here?"
Luna smiled, hands cupped around her bowl and blowing at the soup in a way Aranea was sure she didn't do at fancy dinner parties. "Read, mostly."
"Yeah?" Aranea snagged a third roll from the bread basket, which Luna hadn't touched. "What're you reading?"
"Many things," Luna said. "History. Biographies. Romances."
"No thrillers?"
"I prefer the realistic — or the idealistic," Luna said fondly. "Yourself?"
Aranea thought about saying she'd read the same damn book she'd taken on tour with her repeatedly over the last three years and never managed to let herself get to the end of it. "Not much of a reader," she lied.
"Oh?"
"I've been — meaning to get into it," she said. "More."
"I could lend you some," Luna offered.
Aranea winced at the idea of cracking the spines and dog-earing the pages of all those gold-embossed hardcovers. "Oh, no, I — I'd just lose them, probably."
"I have plenty more. Do you like accounts of air combat in the early Expansion Wars? Pirates? Knights? Murders? College students in need of rescue?" Luna paused. "Thrillers could be arranged. I have been ordering more." She nodded at the reading alcove.
Aranea felt her lips twitch up. "Maybe if come by again," she said.
"Please do," Luna said, brightening up a bit, and Aranea had no idea if she was just being polite or if she really would be happy to have the company. It was hard to tell.
"I — I guess I'll see," Aranea said, because she would've liked to say sure yeah, I'll see you around, but truth was, she couldn't know. This was supposed to be a one-off gig, and she wasn't sure anybody just called up the Oracle to hang out on a day off.
Luna looked guilty at that, like she was embarrassed to have presumed.
If it was an act, it was a good one. Aranea wondered if the kid had ever been able to let her guard down in her life. Or since she'd been twelve, anyway.
"Look," Aranea said, setting down her roll on a plate and taking pity (on herself, probably, and on whatever the melty feeling in her chest was supposed to be). "The television free?"
Luna turned to look at the flatscreen in the corner, surprised. "Oh," she said. "Yes. No. Well, it — it only has so many channels," she said, clearly never having really thought about using it.
"You don't know how to take the signal blocker off?" Aranea was incredulous. Did anybody in this day and age not know how to get around the censorship blockers?
Luna looked blankly at her, and Aranea rolled her eyes. Fucking Imperials.
"All right, where is it," Aranea said, getting up and moving towards the screen.
Luna peered over the back of the couch, dog joining her in poking her nose up over the edge. Aranea pressed a button on the remote and went to hunt down a screwdriver from a toolbox while the device started up.
Having retrieved the box, Aranea surveyed the screen, and then carefully pried it out from the wall panel. Once the wires were exposed, Aranea paused.
She brandished her screwdriver back towards Luna. "Pay attention," she said. "Learn to do this once, and you and that bitchface brother of yours can enjoy the wonders of satellite programming for the rest of your lives."
Luna grinned, tugging the blanket higher around her shoulders. "I did warn him that his face would stay like that if he kept making it," she said. "I told him."
"He should've listened," Aranea said ruefully. She went to work.
Hours later, with the Oracle dozing on her shoulder, an enormous pet dog curled up in a pile of fluff next to her on the couch, a bottomless pot of soup on the heated cart nearby and a badly-acted serial adaptation of Four Duchesses and A Thief's Honor playing out on the screen before them, Aranea thought that maybe being an Elite Imperial Officer working overtime on the request of the Emperor of Niflheim himself might have both its perks and its downsides.
This?
This was probably one of the perks.
