it’s the way the dr. owens gay subtext scene (the one with el in s4 sorry i should probably specify) was literally put in there to POINT OUT TO THE AUDIENCE the way that el treats max as her person her main concern her focus her motivation her girlfriend what’s literally driving her to willingly face her trauma and risk her life and keep on fighting and it CONTINUES throughout the season where el is ready to try ANYTHING to save max and SHE BREAKS OUT OF THE CHOKING VECNA VINES BECAUSE SHE LOOKS OVER AT MAX and she CHOOSES to fight NOT because her bf said to but is SHOWN that she LOOKS OVER AT MAX IN PAIN and THEN SHE FIGHTS????? HELLO????

it’s the way they not only put ALL the subtext and relationship building in bUT THEN make sure to SMACK THE AUDIENCE IN THE FACE WITH IT and have characters DIRECTLY POINT IT OUT and still NO ONE GETS IT I-

El and Lucas both probably love to watch their girlfriend do more and more crazy tricks on her skateboard while trying to impress them. They probably also spend a lot of time begging the barista's to let them mess with the music (where I work we get to choose to music. Some places do it differently though) and then put on the worst songs possible.

I didn't mention in the original post, but El definitely eats a bunch of pastries while she is at the coffee shop. She get's at least two muffins every time she is there. So her partners will always snag her favorite pastry if they see it while they are there and she hasn't arrived yet.

This is barely related to the coffee shop, but El probably get's cold easily so Lucas always donates his coats and sweaters to El when they are outside watching Max.

Max's memories are forshadowing: ElMax & Lumax

Inventive foreshadowing creates a sense of unity in a story even when the audience may not be consciously aware of the foreshadowing and payoff., David Trottier

Sort of. The happy memories actually give us the basic structure of Max's character arc in regards to relationships in Season 5. (As far as there is scene material because I think there's something else.)

Now the first thing is Lucas & Max from S4, but then they start to show us several scenes but completely out of order.

Lucas "I'm right here" (at her bedside - S4 or 5?), Swallowing the red Skittle/the ghost like Pac-Man mid flight ("You were wearing that yellow benny's burgers t-shirt and it was so big it almost swallowed you whole")=consumption of a ghost, followed by the linking sequence, going back to S2 apso out of order, the boys meeting the killer & Lucas and Dustin teaming with Max, the ghost trap, photos of ElMax, like frozen in time (Doctor Who=single moment in time). Lucas and Max when he calls her Madmax (like Mad Max Rockatansky), again ElMax together ....

...even Mike appears (a talk between him & Max like Kota and Lucy having a conversation?), foreshadowing the movie date, ElMax hugging, Lumax not unhappy and, Highfive! Winners.

Oh, and the movie date scene is a basic story writing technique: a promise. And this needs a payoff. The question isn't IF but HOW. (And how you get abilities is been established in Season 4.)

It's you and me won't be unhappy.... Promise, progress, payoff.

So, they made a promise, are now (with the revival) in the process of a progress which will be added through the way how Max will wake up....

...and this will get a payoff. Simple. Right now, most can't imagine how, given the circumstances even though the writers gave us the rules for doing it and every foreshadowing possible that will lead to a payoff. Max can't feel nor see - both! So, either both will be mended or none. Excluding one is bad writing. - So, its both. We learned how, therefore it's not a Deus ex machina, and we will learn why. Max only needs to take his, I mean her medicine. Darn pronouns.

That payoff is only possible through ElMax and note how they use sequences with them in which they are physically close to one another after the mall scene in which they link, like they are...inseparable.

Hi, Anon! Well, I'm not certain that Elmax are endgame per se, and I do genuinely think Lumax is very sweet. Lucas is such a good guy, and he really deserves to be happy. You can tell he really loves Max.

That said, I have to wonder if El had been in Hawkins during the events of S4, maybe Max would have coped better with the death of Billy? Idk, I just feel like she'd be more open with El about her feelings. Also, El is more intimately familiar with death in a way that Lucas wasn't (until Max 😭).

I was rewatching the S3 finale the other day and something about showing Max alone in her room by a window at the end like they did (it might have been near a scene of El by a window?) made me think she was also depressed about losing El in addition to Billy. Maybe Will and Mike weren't the only ones hurting in that way.

Did El and Max ever keep in touch? Why or why not? I don't expect this will be answered, but it was a question I had.

The way that El's Lenora date was so clearly all things Max would've enjoyed.....that was a perfect Elmax date and you can't tell me differently! Not for Milkvan, unfortunately.

And Max would've had the perfect comebacks for Angela and her cronies. I think Elmax would've been untouchable together, and Max would've definitely backed her up in a fight.

The way they filmed the school hallway scene where it cuts from El to Max, both feeling adrift and alone in their respective environments. They needed each other!! Much the same way that Byler needed each other.

Arghhh I know Lumax is so cute and they have the movie date planned and everything. I've written before how I feel about Lumax vs. Elmax and how if there was a way for Elumax to happen, I would be so down.

Idk though, whether it's endgame or not, I still see the romantic potential of Elmax so clearly. Whether romantic or platonic though, the clearest thing of all to me is that El and Max needed each other in S4.

my girl literally came back from being a lab experiment and was closed off from society her whole life and mike was the first person to show love to her, and then it follows with traumatic experiences together. that is a misinterpretation of platonic affection and a trauma bond.

she was far too unfazed about being his sister to like him, she loves mike and he made the first move, so she thought that this is what her platonic love must mean and went along with it.

because of how much she loves mike and because he was the first person she's ever loved since the lab it makes complete sense for her to mistake that as romantic.
