Strange question, but I feel like you are the go-to person for this. Is there any official lore to how lolthsworn drow treat transness? I imagine it would be very terf-y, like amabs arent allowed to transition into a matriarchal caste, and afabs would be disgraced for transitioning to male.
Oh gosh I love drow stuff but I don't think I would even remotely consider myself an expert on their lore, I've only read wikis and scraped the surface of the books. I might page @rukafais though!!
I know there are some trans drow characters, though the only one I can think of right now is Fel'rekt, but as a Bregan D'aerthe member he's more sworn to that than Lolth.
It has always been my personal impression, and thus what I reflect in my RP (my bg3 tav is a trans woman "lolthsworn" who started the game looking masc and as the game progressed became more her desired self), that Lolthite society is very rigid with its gender rules and bioessentialism. Their entire social structure hinges on the matriarchs and priestesses maintaining power, and there's an entire book series about how Fucked Up And Weird they get if anything happens that threatens that order (and the irony of living by such strict order while worshipping "chaos" is lost on them). Much like gender expression being a threat to fascist ideals in real life, I think they would see any kind of gender fluidity as antithetical to their ideals. If men could just suddenly call themselves women, what's stopping all the mages from doing that? What kind of message does it send if one of the matriarchs decides to become a "patriarch"? Where would "agender" fall on the power structure? No. None of that. You are whatever we guess you are based on anatomy at birth.
Additionally, Lolth's hatred of Corellon, an elven god that straddles masculine and feminine, is burning. Elves blessed by Corellon are able to change their physical gender at will; it stands to reason that a goddess determined to be their opposite would revoke such freedoms in her society. She also loves suffering snd giving her own people more reasons to feel at odds with one another.
I think there's room for nuance in individual characters, but from a baseline worldbuilding standpoint I can't imagine lolthite societies being anything but horribly misandrist and by extension against anything that loosens the definition of "man" and "woman".

I had this idea while watching lotr.....
A little au where Stephen is an elf :O
@indoraptorgirlwind
You hit one of my favorite things!! I love LOTR, I used to rp on here as Arwen so much <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were an elven princess of a beautiful and serene kingdom deep in the forest by a gorgeous waterfall. You stood on the balcony in a light green strapless tulle dress. Your hair was in a half updo and your silver circlet sat atop your head. You watched a few horses entire the kingdom and you made your way down to the courtyard to join your father. You made it there and stood beside him as the three visitors dismounted their horses.
The three were elves from the kingdom of Faewood, an enchanted elven kingdom filled with magic. You recognized the insignia on the horse's saddle. The male elf in red and black approached the two of you and bowed. "Greetings, your majesties. I am Sorcerer Stephen Strange from Faewood. My men and I come to speak to deliver some scrolls from our king." The man said. Your eyes were on him, observing his robes and his long black and white hair.
He was quite handsome and powerful looking. Your father nodded and the men walked with him into the palace. Sorcerer Stephen Strange walked over to his horse to grab a few things and stopped when he saw that you were gently petting his horse. He smiled as the horse seemed delighted at the touch. "He likes you." Stephen smiled and you turned to him and smiled.
It was then that he finally got a closer look at you. Gods...You were gorgeous. Stephen felt his cheeks heat up at your beautiful gaze on him. It was like he forgot how to talk so instead, he gently took your hand in his and kissed your knuckles gently. You blushed at this and smiled bashfully.
"My lady...Forgive me for staring...It's just...I have never seen a goddess before." Stephen said smoothly.
You blushed more and giggled softly, "Thank you, Lord Strange..."
You were about to return the compliment when you heard your father call for both of you. "May I escort you?" Stephen asked softly. You nodded and he walked with you up the stairs toward the entrance of the palace.
Stephen decided at that moment that he would have to extend his stay here so he could spend every minute of it with you.

Okay so starting with my first D&D character: Odgerel Muunokhoi.
A bit of an odd step forward for me getting into the 5e system, I decided to make a Lawful Evil character. Okay now don’t come at me with torches and pitchforks already, I haven’t even explained why-
So I was no stranger to TTRPGs or written RP by any means, having previous experience with Runequest and other more freeform systems, but I never dared to touch D&D-lites. I remember being very against the idea of playing class-based systems but then I joined a new group full of CR fans. We picked up Hoard of the Dragon Queen as a starting module not knowing that it sucked balls; however, the selling point was that we had to stop a cult from establishing the final connection with their goddess and that was good enough for me to start thinking about a concept.
The idea of Odgerel proceeded from a mix of samurai warrior combined with mongolian pillagers, and the culture of her homeland was one obsessed with conquest and plunder. The people of Odgerel’s city were devout to the god of control, Menahirin (which honestly now that I think about it, it might have been a homebrew god since I haven’t read about them in the canon). She came from the bond of an elven Menahirin priestess and a lowly human peasant, who decided to give in to their romance and sacrifice the lives they had at the city and escaped to somewhere safer.
In her youth, Odgerel was obviously confused by the decision to abandon the city and then decided to go back there searching for a good enough response. In her investigation she managed to find out that the High Priest of Menahirin had her same last name, turning out to be her grandfather. Her grandfather looked at her in disgust, knowing the story behind her, and promptly revoked Odgerel of her previous last name. Her new last name was Muunokhoi (Wild/Violent Dog, in a despective manner), and claimed that if she was to try and reclaim her heritage, she would have to give cult to Menahirin in a most peculiar way.
“He covets acts, not words- Take this dagger and rust its blade with the blood of our foes... When the rust grows the blade to that of a sword, your name will be as valuable as the one you were born.“

Discord RP Server: E Telda Dagor
Tumblr media
Throwing this out there for any mutuals who are interested in joining a medieval-fantasy RP discord server where you can play a variety of different species and write with some amazing peeps. Some of the species are dragons, demons, shifters, vampires, and fae... If you are interested after reading the premise, please send along a DM to either myself ( @arcane-appetence ) or @jonvandernoorde :)
One World, Two Planes of Existence
Gather around, young souls, and let me weave a tale that will stir the depths of your spirits. Behold, the saga of Atani Palurin and Rauko Palurin, lands forged by the divine hands of The All Great One.
Once, these lands were kept apart by an impenetrable barrier, a veil that denied passage even to the most skilled wielders of magic. It was a separation that held sway over the inhabitants, an enigma that whispered of mystery and forbidden secrets.
In this realm, The All Great One sculpted two twin goddesses, Shayla and Sai, each destined to reign over their respective dominions. Shayla, the paragon of benevolence, held the throne of Rauko, her gentle sway ensnaring the hearts of dragons, vampires, and elven folk. Sai, the harbinger of chaos, resided in Atani, where humans, wereanimals, and demons paid homage to her capricious whims.
To avert the clash between these divine siblings, The All Great One cast a formidable barrier, a shield that sealed the goddesses and their followers from crossing into one another's realm. But as time passed, the omnipotent presence of The All Great One waned, weakening the very fabric of this ethereal wall.
As the barrier's strength waned, the long-separated sisters caught sight of each other once more. The fears that haunted The All Great One's heart became manifest as the goddesses clashed, their celestial fury igniting a cataclysmic war. Years turned to decades as the battlefield ran red with the spilled blood of their followers, until the fateful day when they vanished without a trace, leaving behind a shattered barrier and five portals that bridged the realms.
Two hundred years have since stained the annals of history, and yet the brutal symphony of carnage continues to echo through the land. This world has become a savage playground where survival is etched in the code of existence, where the choices are stark: kill or be killed.
So, dear children, immerse yourselves in this harrowing tale. Witness the clash of gods, the clash of worlds, and the clash of souls. For in the crucible of this conflict lies the untold secrets and the fates yet to be revealed. Are you prepared to navigate the treacherous paths that lie ahead and carve your destiny amidst the chaos?

Kerillian, Vermintide 2. (Handmaiden)
1. Warhammer Fandom is welcome with open arms... but be chill. I don’t tolerate toxicity here and the fandom at least in 40k has a metric ton of annoying neckbeards. It’s a parody that’s so dark that you’re not supposed to take it seriously, you’re supposed to be as over the top and edgy as possible for at least 40k. That or be something like the Orks.
2. Warhammer is dark and then 40k is extremely dark to the point it’s a literal intended parody. And I will not rp the deep lore of Slannesh or any aspect of chaos other than maybe live consumption from Kerillian’s corruption verse. Blacklist the tags ‘elven handmaiden’ ‘shape feaster’ ‘40kay’ (I don’t want this in the main tags of 40k tumblr lmao).
3. This has two characters in one with separate verses and pathways. I thought it’d be neat since the game also gives different pathways for the professions.
4. I have a different voice for my Kerillian for a more elegant elven fighter and for the 40k verse/corruption verse for both. As the distortion combined with a scottish accent and slang.... does not sound pleasant as I experimented with it.
5. Her voice reference is Pisha from Vampire, the Masquerade game. Or better known as Motoko Kusanagi or the ‘Major’ from the anime Ghost in the Shell. Granted Pisha is slightly different. She will still have the same sassy dialogue and some manner of speaking. But expect more of hrm, a honed feral elegance. I have no problems with the VA but I don’t recall other wood elves being scottish, it just is a bit odd for me is all? Along with the distortion I tested making it sound even stranger. I think it’s fine for the ingame and I like her personality however, just what I intend isn’t suited for it.
6. Kerillian’s eyes are pure black and that of a void, this is not normal and a blessing and curse from the goddess Lileath. She has these eyes regardless verse depending on her form, as she does get canonic visions I will say is from the future on events and such. It’s fine to insult her about them or to antagonize/accuse her of such. The only reason Saltpyre doesn’t probably is because they’re friends but also most people haven’t seen an elf at least in Warhammer.
7. If wanting a certain verse? Be sure to read EVERYTHING regarding that verse listed below as added notes. As I had to tack on a lot of things for this bios.
8. Kerillians default verse is her ‘elven handmaiden’ tag that’s a fantasy verse. For it to be sci-fi for its canon AU is 40kay added onto it or the other tag that’s ‘shape feaster’.
9. I know 40k lore better than Warhammer lore but I don’t need to know much to rp this exiled character and I can just read stuff up/plot it out if someone wants to pursue something specific.
10. Warhammer I will try to be flexible on, but it tries to be semi-more realistic in terms of power-scaling/what’s physically possible before you die. Kerillian’s powerset reflects as such, but ultimately she could be throttled by an overscaled anime character for example. Though I can adjust as her power-scaling is hero level to near but not quite demi-god for her verse.
11. I am aware that Eldar cannot become Daemon Princes, but I will be taking liberties and that Kerillian’s weakness to Slannesh. And the Chaos Gods ever evolving and changing? That it becomes a new, concerning and terrifying evolution for Slannesh to offer a new way to save themselves. But also become immortal and apart of Slannesh as a corrupted soulstone adorned to the Chaos God’s body that’s offered through a ritual. Kerillian becoming the first of many... as the Dark Eldar and a few Eldar join the ranks of Slannesh for self-preservation.
Character Reference (Uncorrupted): It is the handmaiden class, then her new voiceclaim is Pisha from Vampire, the Masquerade.
Tumblr media
Do I want them to die: Kerillian can die, this is Warhammer or potentially 40k, no one is safe but Major Gods or the Emperor on the Throne. We can just make a new rp but keep in mind she isn’t a pushover. I do want to plot her death if it’s to happen. Will I have/get icons: Yes I do, for corruption verse and noncorrupted. Tag: elven handmaiden (Default Fantasy Verse) | shape feaster (Corruption Verse) | 40kay (Sci-Fi Grim Dark Parody Verse) Age: Several Thousand Years Old most likely, doesn’t age however. For her Corruption Verse? She’s hrm, I will say it’s so far into the future she’s eons old and considered a seasoned Demon Princess/Prince. Sex: AMAB Gender: She would be considered trans female in human society, but is merely considered a woman in her own. Is fine with she/him and multiple terms. Race: Wood Elf (Uncorrupted) Wood Elf Daemon Princess/Prince  (Corrupted) Sexuality: Pansexual. Personality traits: Sassy, sarcastic. Prideful, hates humans. Hates dwarves. Hates what she considers to be not elegant. Granted, she can still befriend all that was mentioned. Caring subtly. Loyal. Can fear death at times. Likes the thrill of the hunt. A bit cold. Elegant though a touch feral. Joking. Arrogant. Observant. Intelligent. Wise, though it’s left her jaded. Can be loving once she gets close, though is more physical than with words, but her words are pretty strongly-said when she does say them. Poetic. Artistic. Playful. Selfish. Extreme Willpower. | Corruption Verse: Lustful, Degenerate. Sadistic. Masochistic. Hungry. Indulgent. Murderous. Mental traits: Elven Perception. Her willpower extends to her mental state, this allows her to keep her free will and sentience even when corrupted. As she’s corrupted yes, but ultimately chooses still as she did prior along with having her personality. Akin to Magnus the Red but ultimately a different person rather than warped entirely. Physical traits: as all elves in warhammer, she is around 6′3 and has black void eyes, this is notably not normal. Other than that? She just has white hair and long ears. | Corruption Verse: she is around 30 feet long and much thicker with six-arms as a Daemon Naga that is faceless, then a seamless line on her mouth that opens up to reveal her two maws of teeth and a circular hooked, long tongue. She then has the faces of all her victims revealed on the purple parts of her scales that she’s consumed for their shapes that’s ever shifting, moving and moaning in pain, pleasure and torment. She can assume her original form if she so desires, but usually only to infiltrate and corrupt. Her white hair is replaced with white snakes and she has a wingspan that can extend, grow and change in size. Her faceless visage can contort and change to that of a draconic snake-head when eating, she usually just chooses the faceless visage and perhaps wears a face when she senses the other’s desires/what’s appealing to them the most. See below for her corruption verse visual reference. Powers: Note: Presume in the 40k Verse that any powers that involve magic or otherwise involve Psionics or Psyker Energy. I will simply be incorporating her class’s talents as it doesn’t really make sense that someone part of just four people can take on literal armies of Skaven and or Chaos Soldiers.
Kerillian Hand Maiden Powers and Training (Default Warhammer Verse): (Power Scaling Hero to bordering Demi-God but not quite as Warhammer and 40k Warhammer is more realistic in possible feats but I will be using all her talents and class abilities. Think like an Elite Hero Soldier capable of holding the line if put with other Elite Soldiers or given a small squadron)
Phase Dash: Kerillian can phase dash through enemies instantly in a rather long distance but it’s a straight line. This ability leaves her the choice of inflicting massive bleeding onto her enemies and leaving her allies untouched. Then feeding off of the pain? She can process the power into an empowered strikes that she usually utilizes to take down on armored/dangerous targets but dissipates shortly after about 15 seconds. And while she goes invisible for this time? It is not true invisibility, it merely makes her invisible to outside perception for around two seconds. She may strike during this, but it takes her out her phase dash along with blocking much earlier than normal, it can be useful situationally however. She can use this ability every twenty seconds or so.
Wraith Walk: Kerillian can temporarily go incorporeal for a second in well-timed reflexes to avoid attacks entirely, but she cannot spam this. Using this makes her acrobatics slightly faster and her reflexes as well, it can become more fervent but has limits. Her ability to dodge is also supernatural in terms of the distance she can do a still jump to the side or otherwise, along with acrobatics and balance.
Handmaiden Physical Enhancement: she is much heartier than the normal individual and can block rather easily. Her strength also allows her to carry more ammunition compared to the average person, along with being supernaturally strong. (Have you ever actually carried arrows? They’re pretty heavy). Her self-enhancements also improve when stimulated or provoked into operating under strain, such as increasing in reflexes or swiftness of her strikes, along with being able to heal off the deaths of her enemies. She is capable of fully blocking a Troll’s strike or Chaos Spawn’s strikes though she still experiences being knocked around, this is usually used in a pinch or to save an ally.
Handmaiden Healing: using her innate magical enhancements? Kerillian can also share some of her healing when healing or being healed with nearby allies. And using her innate healing factor, she can seal the wounds of her allies more when stabilizing them back to their feet. Even healing them a bit though only a little.
Relentless Fervor Aura: Kerillian bestows an aura that rapidly replenishes the energy of her allies to keep them able to keep fighting, unable to grow tired. This radius is about two-hundred feet or so.
Elite Elven Warrior Training: she is a Grand Master in martial combat, along with training, fighting style being that of a strong, deadly, but elegant elven warrior.
Elven Senses: Kerillian has exceptional elven senses such as being able to see in great detail from even one hundred paces or her reflexes and acrobatics are abnormal. It is surmised that Kerillian's eyes are pure black due to a curse, so it is fine to take note of it and even remark about it. The curse itself goes to the soul and it's a permanent one. I have it as a blessing curse more than anything by her Goddess Lileath who blesses her with visions among other things, along potential outcomes of the future... and one of them being with Slannesh and another with Lileath. Perhaps it is inevitable, yet perhaps there's a deeper need for it to which she does not understand and only Lileath does. I will be keeping this vague until or if ever info about her eyes is ever revealed, though I will tie it into the corruption verse for the sake of it.
Combat Equipment: Elven Mithril Armor crafted in honor of the Moon Goddess Lileath, along with her insignia on her Mithril Tower Shield and Mithril Spear. She uses a Longbow. Usually has a haste potion, healing drought and... usually refuses anything like a bomb or considered inelegant but she may take one if she thinks she needs it.
-
40k Differences to note (I wasn’t sure what to make her to be honest, but this was the closest thing to her moveset in terms of wargear): Kerillian is an Eldar Autarch in her 40k verse and is much more brutal and merciless compared to her Warhammer version, though is still considered merciful by 40k standards. She uses a Forceshield mounted on her wrist, then a Star Glaive. For her ranged weapon? She uses a Reaper Launcher. Then for armor: heavy aspect armor and swooping hawk wings to dodge, fly and the ability to take great hits. I realize this makes her significantly stronger in this verse? But I think overall there’s nothing that translates well to Kerillian other than this.
In 40k, she still uses some of her wargear. It’s just corrupted.
For her canon 40k verse since she’s getting attention for it? I will be open to using her with Sci-Fi or more niche, odd Fantasy characters in general in a more neutral universe of the Eldar scattering from their own arrogance and perfection at being perfect beings, causing their own fatal flaw with infighting over control. So while her power scaling is compared to that of a Primarch as a strong exiled Eldar Autarch: things like Cyberpunk, Star Wars, Star Trek, Final Space, Rick and Morty are all fine to use with my Eldar AU as she can serve as a companion, leader or otherwise that can drive a lot of plots forward since she’s a lot stronger in that verse utility wise and in terms of tech and powers that’ll lean toward being a mysterious bounty hunter. (40k is a parody that goes over neckbeard’s heads to begin with so I’m not going to take it TOO seriously) She is one foot taller since she’s supposed to be tall for her race to begin with and the taller Eldar tend to be the same height as Space Marines. Below is the chosen armor for her as a faceclaim for that verse:
Tumblr media
-
Corruption Verse for Warhammer and 40k Powers and Differences: I will be making her a six-armed Naga Daemon Princess or Prince (for the 40k verse since that’s gender specific but will still stay her gender and pronouns/physical sex etc). This is based off ‘Dechala’ if instead she was a favored champion of her Dark God. Slannesh has been proven to be her most ‘hated’ god when uncorrupted and I have it that they are the most tempting for her in the Warhammer verse and also 40k is rather obvious due to that. 40k will be somewhat different as she’ll be different from most daemons due to her being built for Warhammer Fantasy Corruption rather than 40k.
Very graphic content below for horrific powers info involving live consumption: Her powers remain relatively the same but are enhanced beyond belief to that of a demigod-minor god to match the other champions and daemons who can take on entire armies/small armies by themselves with little issue unless compromised of counter-measures. Her dash is like that of lightning strikes, her strikes deadly and brutal and made to inflict pain to its utmost extent along with pleasure. It is relatively the same powerset, but just empowered to that of a god power-set, then the added few powers below.
Her function and title: She is ‘Kerillian, the Shapesfeaster’. As she steals the shapes of other people by consuming them as a skilled, lightning fast duelist and incapacitates them to be either killed and eaten or eaten outright while alive. They are then absorbed after being brutally digested alive or merely absorbed if killed, though when alive are also are bit into by the many masks that form within her body and under her scales that moan, scream in a cacophony in pained pleasure that deafens her victims yet the vibrations of the sounds so intense that their vibrations torture the victim before they finally die, only to join along with them in that eternal, but wonderfully tormented existence. These faces disappear temporarily and have a new one take its place before being placed back by a different mask from her endless victims, as she is a funnel directly to her dark god in consuming them for their endless hunger and lust for souls.
Shapeshifting: she can flawlessly take the shape, memories and scent and even soul signature of the victims she consumes. She uses their shapes to infiltrate and plant the seeds of Slannesh in their corruption and absolute pleasures.
Infesting Corruption of Pleasures: Kerillian can corrupt other beings through sexual contact, physical contact and often plants these seeds as an Agent planted within communities to disrupt it from within. Mostly in order to bring in the endless dance, thirst and lust her Dark God demands and to bring more followers into the fold to empower them.
Call of Pleasure: all of Kerillian’s masks in her body and underneath her scales all call out at once in a deafening call to action, along with Kerillian herself in a beckoning, distorted draconic roar. Commanding all her sleeper agents she’s corrupted to her cause to act and begin the worshipping frenzy of their Dark God in a carnal rampage of lust. This causes uncorrupted weak-willed victims within a mile to become dazed and revealed to her followers as objects of Slannesh’s designs or are outright corrupted in some cases. They are dazed and stunned for around ten minutes to thirty minutes, then dazed otherwise if strong-willed. Those who survived are often deafened or even blinded depending on how close they are to Kerillian, her followers and allies meanwhile are unaffected.
Immortality: Kerillian like all daemons even if killed, may reform at another time or more quickly if ushered in back to do their master’s work.
Sexual and Sacrificial Rituals: Kerillian lacks magic other than her extreme inane enhancements bestowed upon her to be a predator to feast on Slannesh’s enemies and corrupt the ever-endless vermin of mortals as she parades herself as one of them. She can do ritual magic if need be for a specific cause as a Daemon Prince. Though it is to note that to not confuse this with her innate ability to go back to The Realm of Chaos.
Flight: Similar to Morathi, Kerillian can also fly with wings on her in a similar fashion when she extends them out, then coupled by her own levitation enhancements.
Size and Power Difference: she is 30 feet long and much thicker and bigger in this form, she is capable of going into her old form if she desires and to some extent? Kerillian's will has retained a bit of her old self, but she is without a doubt corrupted, but more or less for her own freedom and wishes, no longer binded. So while she could easily swallow someone? I will not do that unless a bad end is requested even if it's apart of her character to take the souls and faces of people. And any bad ends will be moved to the sideblog under a readmore for explicit horror and graphic reasons. She obviously dwarfs her old self literally in terms of power and size by leagues worth.
-
40k Corruption Differences: (Keep in mind I have to take creative liberties here but I’ll try to fit into canon since only humans can be Daemon Princes. As there are no real Eldar Daemons from what I understand but it does not mean it’s impossible probably)  Main Things to note: She is capable of Warp Travel to go across time and space as a daemon, granted only in places capable of warp travel that’s not past the great barrier. As I’m considering the Psionic Wall the Imperium has around it, then her Corruption into a Daemon Prince is a concerning and a terrifying evolution of Slannesh. Using an Eldar Soul Stone that is absorbed by Slannesh to reward those corrupted that fall to chaos with immortality and to become a Daemon Eldar Prince if proven worthy of being more useful than simply as ‘food’. She is still what she was previously for 40k verse, but receives a vision and promise from Slannesh in her great campaign to create an endless cycle of pleasure, success, dance and a graceful dance for herself and her dark god.
Motivations: Default Fantasy Verse: To survive. To possibly end her exile. To be free. To be happy. To find love. To have a good fight. To possibly have friends. 40K Verse: To conquer, but reasonably so. To pursue the interests of the Craftworlds and deal with the looming problem of chaos in the background. To perhaps... one day mend alliances should the chance ever present itself, granted, she sees it as a slim, near impossibility with the rampant doctrines and xenophobia of the Imperium of Man. To destroy the Dark Eldar. To destroy all threats to the Craftworlds. Corrupted Verse: To serve her Dark Master in the Great Game and to reach an endless, never-ending cycle of her Dark Prince’s designs, this is mostly as an eternal debt she sees for her freedom, immortality and massive power she’s earned as she maintained her free will through sheer will power, for that is what marks a true Daemon Princess/Prince. To indulge in all lustful things and passions, to create new goals and ambitions now that she has an eternity of immortality to do with as she pleases and whatever unfortunate soul befalls her faceless, hungering maw. Backstory: follows canon, merely look for her on her wiki. Granted we can just do adventures in any fantasy setting, I don’t mind. Then the corruption verse is pretty straight-forward. Look up any Daemon Prince or Demon Princess of Slannesh and how they serve their dark god and then combine it with her own goals. I am fine to use her Elven Verse and Daemon Verse in any settings that relate to your character in question or the other or corrupting someone to her will.
Corruption Verse Daemon Form Visual Reference: granted she’s lacking the two extra arms but I suppose just imagine they’re there like the rest or simply are those. Then far larger than the human that’s draped around the tail. She wields three spears in different hands, then wrist-mounted shields that are made to be more akin to bracers.
Note: the og artist is on twitter @virlandil. These are merely heavy edits I did to the purple body. Wings, eyes, then the added snake hair. They are very talented and did an excellent job drawing this design they drew for someone. I just happened to get lucky that someone had wanted basically what I needed as a base.

Jun does have supernatural abilities that link them to the Gods and Goddesses of their world. Their varied abilities come from a Goddess known as Che who gave them all of their own abilities, marking Jun as the NEW GODDESS of Time and Nature
Extreme Temporal Control
They can travel through time at a whim while simultaneously existing outside of time as a whole.
Control Over All Flora
Another of Che’s gifts. Jun is able to grow plants in an instant with the smallest bit of energy expanded. They protect their forest, the plants under their control.
Flight
It is uncertain if this is another gift of Che’s or one that came natural to the young divine, either way they can levitate/fly and often levitate rather than walk.
Transformation
Able to transform his appearance in any way they say choose, as long as they stay human.
Appearance
Their less than human qualities include long slanted ears much like any fantasy elven character and beautiful sheer, pink wings. They are easily mistaken for one of the fae, although this is entirely inaccurate.
NOTE(S):
These abilities were given to Jun through various rps held elsewhere.

Hey there! Saw your tags about Claude out-barding a bard and it made me wonder, if the Golden Deer had a class DnD game what do you think they'd each play??
I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Ignatz doesn’t have a character because he is the DM. He and Raphael played it as kids with some other merchant children, and they where reminiscing about it one day after class and Claude overheard and thought it sounded fun and convinced everyone to try it at least once- even Byleth xD. So Ignatz made a really simple one shot, thinking no one was going to really like it much so didn’t plan beyond that, but they all got really attached to their characters and into the game and now they play at least once a week asjdfk Ignatz is unsure about his dm’ing style but everyone seems to like it so he does his best, and he’s p good! He draws all their characters and important NPC’s and finds lots of inspiration from their battles.
Raphael is a half-orc barbarian- he just likes fighting stuff and doesn’t want to worry about magic or anything lmao he just wants to punch and punch h a r d
Claude is playing a half elf, half dwarf warlock. Warlock bc he thought the backstory of the class was fascinating with having to make a deal with some powerful being in exchange for power and your servitude and he really wants to know what loopholes he can find in the deal. (are there loopholes? Can you turn it back on the patron? How many patrons can you have?) And a dwelf bc, well, he thought it was funny lmao. And, of course, since most Warlock spells use charisma so he WAS going to make that his highest stat, but Leonie dared him not to so now it’s his third highest but you know what? He still out charms the bard constantly. Whenever he rolls for charisma fate is just like “It can’t n o t roll well, its freaking Claude von Riegan What am I supposed to do?? Not let him be charismatic?? Absolutely not.”. He has never rolled below a 10 for charisma checks and the bard is convinced he’s cheating.
Byleth is an Aasimar for sure and maybe a rogue. When Ignatz was helping her roll her character and read the description of an Aasimar, Byleth immediately felt an odd connection and immediately picked it, causing Sothis to get v e r y upset she didn’t pick a Dragonborn and kept nagging her to change xD not seeing what Byleth found so interesting about Aasimars. (Byleth promised her next character would be a Dragonborn so Sothis stopped bothering her to change and is now really invested in the Aasimar ajslkfj “QUICK DIVINE PULSE SO WE CAN REROLL THAT DICE” “I’m not going to do that that’s cheating-“ “HE MIGHT D I E BYLETH WE CAN’T LET THAT HAPPEN!” “Oh so I can’t divine pulse teatimes but you can to save a fictional character.” “My divine power I do with it what I want.” Byleth has never actually divine pulsed to reroll, and Sothis denies she ever said to use it in such a frivolous manner afterward, but at least once a session she will suggest it alsdjflsjf.) When Ignatz asked her who she wanted her god to be Byleth panicked and said Sithos (which is just Sothis backwards alsdjflsjf).
Marianne is a half elf Druid- she felt connected to half elf’s often not fitting in to either of their parents world and being isolated, their entire existence feeling like a burden. Also she likes being able to talk to animals and really likes the personalities Ignatz gives them, saying they’re close the real thing. She has a deer animal companion named Dorte. She is really, really attached to her and everyone else’s characters and is the first one to start crying if it looks like someone might die. She really enjoys the RP, finding it fun to be someone else and is invested in helping her character work out her problems.
Hilda is a human cleric. Like Raphael she doesn’t really want to deal with how confusing magic can be (she was going to be a wizard but once she saw how you have to keep track of components and such she peaced), but also she doesn’t want to be a big strong fighter because she’s delicate even in imaginary games and she refuses to be anything that would need to rush into battle. So she ended on cleric bc she figured it was a happy medium with spells less confusing than wizards and sorcerers and being able to heal which is nice and Delicate but turns out... being the team healer is STRESSFUL. She quickly became the teams Tired Mom who stresses about heals and never uses her last spell slot just in case someone needs healing and she constantly worries over the more fight oriented characters like Raphael and Lorenz. Really her mom friend personality jumped out even harder than usual A very aggressive mom friend lmao Raphael fricking keep your character near the group or Hilda will NOT rez you again she swears to the goddess
Lorenz is an elven paladin and he plays it 100% lawful good. He likes being a character of importance and role plays heavily. He has the second highest charisma technically, but like the bard, Claude just keeps outrolling him and it really bothers him but only for diplomatic moments because HIS character is the one who should be dealing with all this high class stuff, NOT the warlock with no previous connections to anything >:(
Leonie is a human ranger. Simple, easy, closest thing to a mercenary or hunter. She always tries to be better at Byleth’s rogue since a few of their skills over cross alksjf
Lysithea plays an elf sorcerer. She picked the most adult, tall, serious class and race in her opinion to show she IS all those things herself, and she does play it well. Though she does have moments of childishness that her character probably wouldn’t have but she can’t help herself lajdkf
Now the big question- Who Is the Bard Claude keeps cucking outrolling???
Sylvain.

i would legit love to know ur answer to all of those dnd questions tbh
so many gfsljgf thank you antonia i love ask memesputting #13 up here for the anon who requested it and the rest below the cut!13. Introduce your current party.I currently DM a few games! School is hectic and I don’t get to play very often but all the characters are GoodI have one group campaign titled “When the River Bleeds Red” (which is probably news to you, Antonia, and everyone else who plays, idt I ever mentioned that slkfjglfskj) that has a blacksmith (half-elven cleric, @the-idiot-who-stood-still) named Brigitte Faestrum, a pumpkin farmer (halfling druid, @beesgnees) named Cathal Headrig, a former stage performer (fire genasi sorcerer, @merrigold) named Emelia Sparks, and a former mercenary (gnome fighter, @jacqmutiny) named Nyx!I also DM one-on-one campaigns for @merrigold (who plays an aasimar druid named senua tasked with undertaking journeys on behalf of the gods in “The Glacial Erratic”) and @fictitiousbees (who plays a kenku wizard named scribbles called to the service of a high dragon in “Luck of the Draw”)Everything else below the cut!
1. A favorite character you have played.
I’ve only played two characters! One was Carran Warset, who is my Son and like the bulk of the reason I know I’m trans, and one was Chim from your one-on-one campaign. I rly like both of them tbh but Carran is my child gkjlsfgjs
2. Your favorite character that someone else has played.
Excluding anything I’ve DMed, Sivarna by @pluviance!
3. Your favorite side quest.
In the group campaign we played in together, there was one session that idr if you were able to be there for but we like,,, went into a forest and bought a really ugly belt from a stoner for zero plot reasons and I count it as a side quest in my heart
4. Your current campaign.
Well, you know everything about all my current campaigns that you’re allowed to know rn, but for anyone who might be reading who isn’t in them:
The group campaign is being used as scapegoats in the brutal murder of an ambassador’s daughter and is fleeing a city through secret tunnels -- we last left off at Cathal becoming a giant badger and burrowing upward
In the solo campaign with Senua, she’s attempting to deliver a large, magical object from the goddess of earth deep inside a mountain, and she’s facing down a basilisk with three NPCs
And in the solo campaign with Scribbles, he’s just played a card game that was really more of an interrogation, where he found out a high dragon has taken interest in him, and he is, in unrelated news, taking a package to the local apothecary
5. Favorite NPC.
Of someone else’s, I love Lucy from the Chim campaign!
Of mine, I will never stop loving Mr. Kretever Tatell. Kret is a goddamn idiot but he’s my goddamn idiot
6. Favorite death (monster, player character, NPC, etc).
Carran once killed an evil poison merchant by seducing her in an enemy king’s bedroom and stabbing her when he went in for the kiss gkfsljgfsj. Then he and Sivarna wound up hiding with her corpse under a bed discussing the concept of threesomes in whispers while the king wandered around his room. Not as like, a possibility. Just because the topic came up
7. Your favorite downtime activity.
S,,,hop,,,,,,, money tiem $
8. Your favorite fight/encounter.
I liked the fight where I balanced the combat correctly lkgsflkjskljg, the one with guards in the tunnels
9. Your favorite thing about D&D.
Storytelling!
10. Your favorite enemy and the enemy you hate the most.
Homebrew enemies are coolest imo but hard to balance; the giant gemstone ant I had you fight would’ve been my favorite if it’d been able to get more than like two attacks in gskjgksj
And insect swarms are very annoying to fight
11. How often do you play and how often would you ideally like to play?
How often I play is whenever every single one of the stars align and ideally I would play like every other day fksjglskfjg
12. Your in game inside jokes/memes/catchphrases and where they came from.
God the current ones haven’t gone long enough for those yet really and I’m blanking on most from the group player campaign
I do remember Carran was 1000% convinced basil was poison at one point and his pet rat killed an evil, powerful sorcerer by chewing his ear
14. Introduce any other parties you have played in or DM-ed.
Just the group player campaign with Carran, which didn’t get to the heavy plot stuff before it ended tbh, and then the solo one you ran with Chim in what was rly a Very cool world concept of like hellish Las Vegas that I’d like to steal at some point
And then you ofc know this but for anyone reading who doesn’t, I’m going DM a maybe-oneshot, maybe-a few more than oneshot post-apocalyptic campaign for you and @fictitiousbees, set in a world that’s been destroyed by fast growing invasive fungi which is like. only The sexiest apocalypse scenario
15. Do you have snacks during game times?
Yes, religiously. Game time snack time
16. Do you play online or in person? Which do you prefer?
I’ve never played in person other than a single test game for new players! I prefer online tho; you can look things up and type if you’re shy
17. What are some house rules that your group has?
I have a rule about only two players being able to try the same sort of check, but that’s it for us so far that I can think of
18. Does your party keep any pets?
Not yet! Cathal has a way with animals though
19. Do you or your party have any dice superstitions?
I Do
20. How did you get into D&D? How long have you been playing?
I got into it bc Critical Role made it look super super fun, and I’ve been playing off and on for two years now
21. Have you ever regretted something your character has done?
I’ve regretted everything any character I’ve controlled has done I think that’s just dnd
Realistically tho, big yes for a lot of what Carran did, most notably snooping on another player character who had cast Alarm on her room
22. What color was your first dragon?
Haven’t had one yet!
23. Do you use premade modules or original campaigns?
100% original babey
24. How much planning/preparation do you do for a game?
3% planning 97% “oh fuck I need to have an idea Now” babey
For DMs
25. What have your players done that you never could have planned for?
Everything, it’s why I never know what I’m doing
I never expected Cathal to become a large badger and dig out of the underground, how do you prepare for someone to, in all seriousness, tell you they’re going to become a badger and scrabble to the surface
26. What was your favorite scene to write and show your characters.
I really tend to enjoy the one-on-one scenes; I think my favorite was having you roll that insane wild magic surge and detailing What Happened At The Theatre
27. Do you allow homebrew content?
Yes if it can go in DND Beyond
28. How often do you use NPCs in a party?
In group campaigns, not often, although we have two with us right now. In solo campaigns, if you want combat you’re getting an NPC party, at least for a bit
29. Do you prefer RP heavy sessions or combat sessions?
Personally I love RP heavy sessions; combat is fun but I crave Story
30. Are your players diplomatic or murder hobos?
I think mostly diplomatic with a dash of murder hobo
For Players
31. What is your favorite class? Favorite race?
I’m so so so boring but I love humans gksfjgsk
Humans, elves, and half-elves are my favorite
And then I Would Die For Every Rogue, it’s hands down my favorite class
32. What role do you like to play the most? (Tank/healer/etc?)
Rogue role
Lemme stealth and steal and stab
33. How do you write your backstory, or do you even write a backstory?
For Carran it was,, A Whole Process
I came up with a basic idea, then journaled as him several times and wrote and rewrote until I had what felt Right, and then I kept toying with it and adding more details throughout the campaign -- I love playing and would really like to again but the obsession with expanding upon his story made me realize I need the freedom of worldbuilding that goes along with DMing; I don’t think I could be a player without DMing a separate campaign bc I just try to take over
34. Do you tend pick weapons/spells for being useful or for flavor?
Both!
35. How much roleplay do you like to do?
So much, I usually use old acting techniques and get fully into character
thank you again antonia!!! these were fun

14. Introduce any other parties you have played in or DM-ed.
Oh god. Oh no. The LONGEST LIST…
The Historical Preservation Society of Fandolin - My first ever dnd party playing Lost Mines of Phandelver! This was a bunch of years ago and I still have very very fond memories. We got our name by a scheme that managed to get us a 1v1 fight with a necromancer and then later an invitation to see some bugbears but that turned out less good. Comprised of Flint the Dwarven Cleric who 100% started a table-wide superstition of warhammers never hitting their targets, Taris the Half-Orc Paladin noble who originated the scheme, Tilwynn Syrr (Mr. Sir)- my wood elf rogue- who continued the scheme and butted heads with Taris repeatedly, and Eileer- a wood-elf beastmaster ranger who we called Grandma for her age and general personality. It was a wild few months.
Ghostbusters - A hard-scrabble group of idiots fight off supernatural threats and actual cannibal Shia LeBouff in the Magic The Gathering setting of Innestrad. The first campaign my girlfriend and I got to play together, and her first campaign! Comprised of her Ness (a Hunter Ranger with RIDICULOUS damage output), my Vermillion Kade (assassin and group dad), a Fighter that died to a Shambling Mound and came back as a Bagpiping Bard whose names elude me, Nessnemo (Nemo for clarity- a barbarian whose outfit consisted of primarily straps and little else), and Anders (A druid who caused the tablewide joke of ‘Bear in a Banquethall’ whenever players do something Very Ill-Advised because they missed a detail of description). We also saw a character named Chrodechild in this game while I took over for a Birthday Two-shot DMing stint.
OG Sendra - The first attempt at a full-length campaign. Comprised of Chrodechild the enchantress that eventually face-heel-turned into a villain, Lorelai Elffei the thief from a town of children who died and came back, Nemo (once more, but tiefling this time), Eseka the Halfling Monk/Bard performer in a circus (I THINK to melil, actually) who died and was restored, and Feverfew- the Drow Warlock of the Archfey. It had a pretty high character-swap-and-death rate. Feverfew the warlock died and became Patrin the Dragonborn Paladin who was then ALSO killed, and Kanseif the Human Barbarian Warrior Princess came about to replace him. Chrodechild turned evil and was replaced with Rhadha the crippled tiefling warlock who had made a deal with hags and had a long contract full of stipulations. Brill had to depart after character moments occurred and came back as Sylvienne Ghost- an Aasimar druid and Therapy Dog. There were further character swaps later on, but by the time they occurred the campaign had begun to grind to a halt.
Shards of the Past - A campaign run by a friend. The party was gathering the broken fragments of a rod of Manticores to fight back against the northern Empire. We were contracted by the queen to do so and BOY we sucked at it but we sure did win the war! A human paladin (whose name escapes me) with a lion-steed named Balthazar, Kestral the human Ranger-assassin (who had bird-themed names for her whole family it was rad), and my gnome Wizard Sullivan Orren du Ghislain-Ameritte III, who slowly descended towards lawful evil as the game progressed. It was a WILD romp.
ThreaTTT - My second stab at DMing! The players awoke in prison after a night of wildly out-of-hand carousing and had to pay off their debt to society in service to Drann’s public. Mostly monster hunting and character-driven, the first introduction of The Timeless and Sliver of Moon! Party consisted of Tor (half-elf half-dwarf bard who was locked in an endless one-sided rivalry with Fortesque D’artigan- another half-elven bard), Risc Taxis (an assassin from the Talons, the southern Thieves and Assassin’s guild in Sendra, and an addict to Celadon- a opiate that stains fingers blue), and Atonement/Toni- an Aasimar Archfey warlock who was fleeing an engagement and was beholden to the whims of her 12 year old patron. They more or less made a thrash metal band by level 5, and Cera- a merfolk enchantress prostitute- joined up with them after a trip to the Stormlashed Sea. Her name didn’t fit the scheme, but she was loads of fun.
Pile of Idiots/Fortune’s Favor/Dumb Luck - You know this one, Muffin. ;P Comprised of a Fireball-Happy Endlessly-Curious sorcerer, an Extra As Shit 4 Elements Monk, the Queen of the Sea herself, The Worlds Best Bard, Smol Druid with Smol Doggo frond, and Beefest Lizard Tank, these idiots try and save the world- or at least get by.
Trees Beneath the Seas - A campaign that got very away from us, and where Moon received most of his character development. It was a huge party, which I think detracted a bit from the potential RP fun, but I got to be RECKLESS. We had Damon Pyre the Half-Elf-Half-Dragon Sorcerer, Durieal Durnam the OP monk that was killed by the weapon he carried, Saneva Amailo the hexblade warlock of Garagos and certified Edgelord Supreme, Quv the gnome-turned-elf rogue that left and whose player came back with Rue the Pumpkin Queen the human druid, Amaya Arissius the wood-elf Horizon Walker Ranger (who died and was reincarnated as a human), Verath the Dragonborn bard, Persephone O’Dougal the Canim forge cleric, Braugen Rowcron the dwarf barbarian who came back later as Satsuss the yuan-ti artificer, Arlow Rathers the paladin of Illmater and best baker the world has ever seen, Waruk Flamesong the half-orc wizard/cleric who sank the world, and finally Sliver of Moon who robbed, lied, and smooth-talked his way into and out of worlds of trouble as a swashbuckling rogue-fighter-paladin-sorcerer (we got to lvl 30 shit got WEIRD).
Harder Than We Thought - Thrush’s game! We played on the continent of Sivaan- slowly coming under siege by a power called The Parody that wanted to make the whole world just a liiiiiiiittle more interesting. Evelynn Mercado (Parsippany Olapieros) the half-elf blade-bard with ten tons of swagger in a ten ounce body who was looking for her father and making her own name in the world, Thrush Marigold the endlessly sunny sun-soul monk who was learning about his tiefling heritage while looking for his mother, Sir Tim the Halfling Hero For Hire Paladin who was making his tiefling lover and his son proud, Dune the bloodhunter with a Big Problem with hags, ‘The’ Wothe the more traditional halfling bard who was potentially about to be Thrush’s uncle by marriage, Perryn the Air Genasi Beastmaster Ranger and prankmaster general, and a dragonborn sorcerer I cannot recall the name of with terrible eyesight.
Punk! - A portal-fantasy run by our Innestrad DM, with a fantastic set up where he said he had to take a call during our session 0 and walked out. We then all got messages at the table saying he’d been replaced and to not trust him, and when he came back his whole body language was changed and then ‘sucked us into a portal’ via his tome of handbooks he got rebound into one HUGE book. We all played ourselves but better, and it was wild.
Umber Wilds/Aspiring Cryptids - One I’m currently running on mondays! A group of adventurers Doing Their Best. Audhilde Stoneforger is the Eldritch Knight and Battle Goddess who can leap up to 170 feet because I’ve broken my own will. Larken Delmare is the human shadow sorcerer who used to be an elf and came back wrong, she’s got ties to the first lands of Thielle and is dealing with Coming Back Wrong as best she can. Yseult Brighton is a water-genasi grave cleric with both Selune and Shar claiming portions of her soul, she’s been dubbed the World’s Okayest Cleric and is basically a fishbowl made of friendship. Lastly there’s Ekaterina Sheralova, a drow Gloomstaker Ranger with the most flamboyant fashion and cat-like personality whose family is probably going to wind up killing her or trying to.
17. What are some house rules that your group has?
BIG CRITS! You max your primary damage die and then roll the second, so you’re always hitting big when you get that nat 20! I have to beef so much health because of this.
Flanking - Instituted around the In-Person table: when you flank you get a +2 to hit, not advantage. It’s less OP that way.
29. Do you prefer RP heavy sessions or combat sessions?
Usually RP heavy sessions are my favorite thing, but sometimes you just want to hit something. XD I’ve found I really like a healthy dose of both, but I love it when the combat functions to fuel RP, so RP is probs my more favorite kind.
30. Are your players diplomatic or murder hobos?
They’ve trended more diplomatic! I’m grateful for it, and it’s neat seeing what pushes characters into ‘murder’ when they start out with diplomacy.
31. What is your favorite class? Favorite race?
Oh golly, probably Rogue or Paladin for favorite class, but Bard is up there too. I love versatility, and Rogue and Bard are skill monkey classes that are super fun. Paladin’s whole ‘strength from your belief in an ideal’ is also hella fun tho, I like it when paladins draw power from belief not in a god, but in a principle that guides them. Favorite race is harder, I don’t really have a favorite- but I know I dislike playing as Dragonborn, Aarakokra, and Lizardfolk personally. They’re just not for me, I think.

Looking For
All sorts of connections! Friends, enemies, patients, fellow Druids and Alchemists, but over all, plot. Also looking for Druids that wish to join the Circle of Dusk! I’m happy to do something long, or short-term, just send me a pm and we can start to chat! Those seeking romantic relationships should know that I prefer slow-burn with a nice build up, no rushing into a one night stand here, please.
RP Hooks
Healer; need a medic? Injured in the wilds and need someone with knowledge of toxins and venom? N’enia is an alchemy-based healer with basic triage training. She can set bones, stitch wounds, stop major bleeding, among other medical services.
Trained Alchemist: N’enia has a vast knowledge amassed on the topic, as well as a storied background in herbalism. Outside of her home in Ashenvale she grows a sprawling garden of plants that can be used in a variety of potions, poisons, elixirs, and poultices.
Ex-member of the Cenarion Cicrle: Having joined their ranks soon after women were welcomed into the fold, N’enia learned much under the tutelage of the Shan’do’s. Though after a difference of opinions she left the Circle, and attempts to continue a friendly relationship with it’s members.
Druid of Dusk (formerly Rot) [Ask before using this one!]: When faced with her own mortality, N’enia happened upon a secluded sect of Druids collectively known as the Circle of Dusk. These men and women are considered outsiders even among their own, as they embrace death and normalize it’s part in the life cycle of all things, even Kaldorei. (learn more about my headcanon Circle here)
Availability
I live in the Eastern Standard Timezone (UTC - 5) but likely to be online at odd hours with a tendency to be on at night or early morning. what is sleep?
I prefer in-game (Moon Guard or Feathermoon US servers) or discord rp, and will be up for RP as long as I’m online and don’t have the ‘do not disturb’ icon up!
Add me on Discord!: hierophant#6079
Style/Preference Notes
I lean towards paragraph response and dialogue, though I’m working on short and quick sentences! While I like to think I’m pretty well versed in WoW lore, we all make mistakes and exceptions! This character is heavily influenced by a headcanon of my own and if you don’t feel comfortable RPing a possibly non-lore conforming scenes, maybe N’enia isn’t for you! I’m alright with lore-breaking and headcanons as long as they have some sort of explanation, the more creative, the better.
Themes: Will RP most anything with the exception of rape and death.

I finally got around to cleaning the calendar which I’ve used to keep track of our RP since like 10th campaign. It is pretty much as accurate I can get it, so I consider it canon-ish (also bc no one as far as I know, has contested me with their own one :P), but I might tweak it every now and then. I’m putting this out here now, mainly for the ease of accessibility for me and our other GMs, since it seems we have started to run into more questions of “when did this happen?” -kind as of late. I’ll try to update this at least once a campaign.

A Few of My Favorite Things
Hullo, gentle readers. Once more into the Den! This time, our article idea comes from Tumblr’s own @FatherFlesh, who suggests, “Maybe some of your personal favorite events or characters you experienced as a DM?”
I’ve been DMing for 38 years, so I have many, many favorite stories, but I will try to keep it to article length.
One of my favorite things as a DM is when I get surprised. Since it’s my world, and I know all the behind-the-scenes type information, getting surprised by an element of the campaign usually comes at the hands of the players. Luckily, I’ve been blessed with many great players over the years, and they’ve thrown plenty of surprises my way.
My husband, in particular, has a penchant for coming up with solutions I never considered for a problem. I gave the example a few articles ago of his wizard who wished his alternate reality self to become real in his own timeline, so that they didn’t have to duel each other to determine who’s reality would win out. I wrote a scenario once where the players were supposed to kill some renegade duergar to make a temple safe for Asmodeus to take it over (a favor owed to the archdevil by the party’s Warlock). Once they had wiped out the duergar, my husband’s cleric called in a divine favor to consecrate the temple to his goddess instead. That threw a crazy monkey-wrench into things, and the very lawful evil Asmodeus couldn’t argue that they had fulfilled the letter of what he had asked. Well played, o my husband.
My friend Neil, who sadly now lives several hours from my house, was also excellent at surprising me. A number of surprises came to me thanks to his character Mundunugu Nobuanga Snakedancer, a wild mage he played many years ago in one of my early D&D campaigns. His willingness to wild surge spells always made for some pretty intriguing results. One time, a wild surge he cast created two snakes, “I am a father!” he cried in delight, and he caught the snakes, training them to hunt mice on their spelljammer ship.
After one long hiatus away from their ship, I thought it would be funny to give him a surprise, so I described a number of smaller snakes slithering around when they boarded. “I am a grandfather!” he cried, and he began to capture and name the snakes things like Umbuntu-Ung the Strong and Rekuru the Wise. When one of the other players revealed he had caught and concealed one of the snakes, Neil stared at him in shock. “Why have you…? He is Lo-Tubtub the Hidden!” He said it without missing a beat, cracking us all up. It was one of those golden RP moments that you get once in a blue moon.
I also enjoy it when I surprise myself. While running a LARP, I played an entity called the Gourmand, who had vast stores of information. The players were asking for the location of Hargrimm Djal, an evil NPC from the campaign. In a flash of inspiration, I said to them, “You don’t want to know that…that could change tomorrow. What you *should* ask is, what is the threat he represents?” They mused and agreed, and, once they’d fulfilled our bargain, I revealed that he had essentially a psychic neutron bomb. It would leave every physical structure alone, but everything would be lobotomized, perfect for Djal to make into his undead army. The looks of horror on their faces was marvelous.
The thing was, I’d just made that up, virtually on the fly. But, based on what I knew of Djal, his resources, and certain things that existed in the campaign, it made total sense. Of course, then I had to go back to the rest of our plot team and explain. Luckily, everyone loved it, and that was the big threat of the ending of the campaign.
Another thing I love is when the players put together the pieces of elements of my campaign and figure something out. When they realize that the reason the sentient elven ship they fly in shares a name with the dead daughter of the elven king, it’s because her soul is housed within it. When they realize that the “White Lady” referred to by several different cults is actually the paladin’s cousin, a fallen cleric. Or when they realize that the reason the dark elf ranger in the party’s skin is slowly turning less dark is because ALL elves were dark elves once, and only removal from the Underdark’s peculiar radiation changed their skin color over time. These are all mysteries from various campaigns I’ve run that the players worked out, and it was so satisfying to see.
Another thing I love is when the players figure out something entirely wrong, but what they come up with is so compelling that I decide to change the plot to match what they’ve come up with, because I like it better. A villain in my 3.5 campaign was a vampire sorcerer who rode a black dragon. “Something’s up with that,” my husband said. “Dragons wouldn’t just be servile to anything, even a vampire. It’s probably in his thrall or something.” This led to me deciding exactly that, which allowed the players to help free the dragon, thus gaining an ally against a powerful foe.
As far as favorite characters, there are too many to name, both NPC and PC. I loved Eleniel, the childlike sentient elven spelljammer ship of my 3.5 campaign. I love Flishbok Shablehathy, the garrulous gnome cook, and his tight-lighted human friend Winther, to whom he ascribes all kinds of pithy wisdom, but who only seems to grunt. I love the Halfling tavernkeep Brandy Quietstreams and Drog, the good-natured half-orc bouncer, who have a deeper relationship than seems obvious on the surface. Outside of D&D, some favorite characters include Will deCanta, the barkeep bard who was secretly toting a gun and who had a degree in quantum mechanics, and his reincarnation into the spirit world, Cantus the Storyteller. So many characters past and future have special places in my heart.
All of the stories from my various campaigns feel like a myth-cycle that no one fully knows but me, but I do love sharing them with players and friends. I hope you’re making favorite memories in your own campaigns. I’d love to hear about them.
