This placenta is so beautiful. I always say women are magical, but this brilliant organ really drives it home. We have been blessed with so many placenta clients this summer, including one that we had to fight hospital policy to get released. Why would anyone consider this gorgeous creature medical waste? The realness of postpartum depression. Kudos to @themanifestingmamma who fought her PPD and did not let it consume her. Though not everyone has the same experience. Please, if you are feeling like something is off, tell someone. Speak up. YOU MATTER. . . . . From @themanifestingmamma: This is a picture I most likely will not keep up for very long. This is me, at the peak of my postpartum depression. I asked Shiloh to take a picture of me, so I could remember how far I’d come, if I ever came out of it. I was lower than low, I wasn’t even myself. Looking back at this photo I remember perfectly the pain I felt, the dread in waking up everyday, the physical pain that engulfed me from thoughts in my brain. I had never known consuming, mind altering emotion such as this that flooded every fiber of my being, making its way through my veins like a plague. This is what postpartum depression looks like, or at least what it did for me. I didn’t want to leave this life, but it seemed like the only way that would rid me of the pain I was in. I didn’t ask for it, it wasn’t welcome. But there it was, and I kicked its fucking ass and beat it to the ground before I let it consume me, or much worse, take my life. #thisisppd . . . . #ppd #postpartumdepression #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #overcomingppd #mentalhealthsupport #communityovercompetition #stopcensoringmotherhood #motherhoodunited #motherhoodrising #motherhood #takebackpostpartum #momblogger #empoweredbirthproject #mindfulparenting #mindfulmama #consciousmotherhood #motherhood #tribedemama #birthofamama

#Repost @carriagehousebirth (@get_repost) ・・・ Please sign @empoweredbirthproject petition to @instagram to allow uncensored birth images! 💓 __ This beautiful photo series is now the most liked and engaged media EVER on the history of this page @empoweredbirthproject. It is clear there is a huge audience that appreciates this content. However, @instagram censorship policies have thus far inhibited our work in sharing uncensored, educational images of physiological birth. __ I believe we can change this and find a more productive solution than censorship. I’ve written a petition to @nickyjcolaco, Instagram’s Director of Public Policy (and someone i have met personally and worked with over the last 2 years to restore birth accounts that have been taken down). Nicky has been a huge advocate for the birth community and i believe she can assist us to further our cause. This is what I propose: __ 1. Recategorize all birth related content as educational material, in its own unique category if necessary __ 2. Allow our community to post graphic images of physiological birth with the images blurred or greyed out, so users can tap to see the images and choose whether to view them. This gives the birth community the freedom to share more meaningful content, and the users of Instagram control over what they see. __ 3. Continue to provide additional layers of protection to birth related accounts and work with influencers and users to restore content and accounts as needed __ The only way we can begin to change the way society views and appreciates birth, is to stop categorizing it as offensive material and start allowing our community the freedom to share uncensored images and information. Birth does not belong in the same category as pornography, graphic violence, profanity, etc. __ Click link in bio to join this cause! Share this post and the petition all over the Internet! Let’s do this! __ Love, @katievigos __ #IGallowuncensoredbirth #empoweredbirthproject

These two pioneers, obstetrician Michel Odent and doula Liliana have single handedly changed the landscape of birth for women for over 50 years now! 🤱🏻 . They have been tirelessly working to give back the power of birth to the birthing woman. 🤰🏻 Their inspirational journey is among the very pivotal aspects of my work both in the yoga classes and the MummyYoga Birth Preparation workshops. 🎖Along with other equally stalwart influences such as @spinningbabies 🎖and @leslie.kaminoff 🎖we bring birth conversations to our workshops like no other. . We are not restricted to any set or dates curriculum. We pivot, change, and are inspired by current evidence mixed with fabulous experience from a variety of subjects. That’s how we stand apart 💥 . That’s one of the biggest reasons why (and perhaps even commercial suicide) we refuse to narrow down our Birth Preparation content to just “🍋Hypnobirthing🍋” . As a new and expectant parent I want the whole story not just deep relaxation techniques! . I want not just physiology and hormones but I want the neuroscience, anthropology, sociology and cognitive science evidence to fully prepare for birth. . It’s this level of depth that I wanted to understand for my own births that we now bring to MummyYoga Birth Preparation 😁 . . Come along on Saturday 20th @beehivehealthcare to really engage with Birth. We only talk evidence, no heresy and certainly no judgements. . Birth workers really are amazing. __ Finally, all that iron! 🏋🏻‍♀️ weight lifting and resistance exercise during pregnancy can be an excellent way to stay active and prepare for birth, as @brittalbrecht shares: __ "Workout of the Day: Squat out a baby! I am pretty sure I PRed that one! Little man apparently wanted to win the Birth PR because he made his grand entrance fast! My water broke at 6:15am, when he punched the amniotic sac, and he came rushing into the world at 9:35am, all while I squatted him out holding the squat rack bar at home! The birth of Zara.
Saturday morning, the 24th of June I woke up feeling that my time being pregnant was coming to an end. I had a decent nights sleeps after celebrating my birthday the night before with friends. I was feeling tightenings from the moment I opened my eyes that morning and they were feeling different than the usual Braxton Hix I had experienced. Throughout the day, I nested. Putting on a slow cooker, cleaning up and making sure our home birth essentials were ready. I took a long nap and didn’t reply or speak to many people that day. As the day progressed so did the tightening feelings in my stomach. I knew the time had come, yet was still feeling that it couldn’t be real that the day surely hadn’t finally arrived. I had been waiting for this and was wondering what it would feel like. Would I know for sure when I was in labour? How long would it take to intensify? Questions that really did not matter. The only thing that mattered was to be in the moment, with each contraction. I remember thinking about all the books I had read and the breathing techniques I had practiced. I needed to surrender to each contraction. Relax my face, jaw and shoulders and allow it to be. We called my amazing Midwife and just hearing her voice put me at ease. I would call her later when things were moving along. George started to set up the pool and made sure I had whatever I needed. He put the TENS machine on and made sure it was working and was on the right settings. As time went on and the feelings and sensations intensified, I realised that I needed some strong women around me. I called my sister Alana and my best friend Caitlin to join us. When they arrived, I felt relieved. Although I was already questioning myself. Did I call them too soon? This is a big lesson that would come up many times during the rest of my labour. We were all together and I felt very loved and supported. I started feeling nauseous and let out everything in my stomach. I felt better… for a moment. I hopped in the shower and Caitlin sat with me and was timing my contractions. I didn’t want her to leave my side. When I got out, everything was cleaned up. Alana held my hand and talked me through the feelings. She knew what to say and when to say it. I walked a lot during this time. Pacing around the house. Up and down the lounge room, breathing deeply. I would grab onto George for comfort and support. I have never felt so close and in love with him through the entire experience. Everyone was making sure I was drinking plenty of water and I tried to eat a protein ball, which lasted one bite. I threw it down when a contraction hit. We decided to call my Midwife when my contractions were 2 and half minutes a part and were getting quite intense. I was happy to know she was on her way. I felt very close to my midwife, she understood exactly what I wanted for the birth and I held so much trust in her. Throughout my pregnancy I felt very privileged to have her and knew she would be exactly what I needed when birthing my baby. When she arrived, I felt her comfort right away. I remember commenting on her sweet smelling perfume and hearing her reassuring words. We decided it was time for me to get in the pool, which gave me instant relief. The next few hours were tough, i doubted myself a lot. I felt fear, anger, that i was loosing strength and that I couldn’t do it anymore. Again, I was questioning myself, my ability and my strength. I was transitioning and it lasted quite a while. I remember looking into my sisters eyes for her loving and guiding support. I saw tears in her eyes and I knew she was feeling everything I was feeling. She knew more than me of what I was capable of doing. She believed so strongly in me. Ive always felt so close to her but this was on a different level. I found some strength in the pool and my baby gave me some extra time in between contractions to rest. I felt relaxed for those few minutes before the next surge began and I was really breathing deeply and calmly. I started pushing which felt great but began getting frustrated when nothing was happening. I hit the side of the pool with frustration and yelled to my midwife Cate for help. We decided I needed to get out of the pool and I asked Cate to check me. There was still some cervix left and she pushed it over my babes head. This was the point where I needed to get fierce. I pushed with everything I had after Cate giving me a pep talk. I screamed and let everything out. I heard myself at one point and didn’t know I could make those sounds. I felt my baby come out and go back in and I felt disheartened with this. I was questioning myself again and didn’t know how I was going to get her out. Even though Cate had told me several times that she was going to do this so I could stretch. I could hear Caitlin’s words when they could see her head. She gave me the encouragement I needed. She told me about her full head of hair and showed me a photo she had taken, so I could see how far I had come. What amazing support I had. I gripped onto George and he wiped away my sweat. I kept moving into different positions, trying to find what was most comfortable. Leaning onto my partner, feeling his support behind me helped. I asked Cate to break my waters as I felt it would relieve some pressure. The last few pushes were done with a fierceness I didn’t know I had. I looked up and saw my niece was in the room. What an amazing thing.. only a little over a year before I was watching her emerge earth side. I breathed her head out, she turned and with the next surge we had our baby girl Zara. Tears were running down George’s face. I couldn’t believe what I had done. I birthed our baby girl, in our loving home, with my amazing supporters by my side. Welcome baby, Cate said in Greek as we held our girl for the first time.

From Home Sweet Homebirth on Facebook:
Raise your hand if you’ve never seen a cervix before?? 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ Many women have not, because let’s face it, unless you’re a medical professional they are difficult to get a good view of 🔭
This is what a cervix looks like way up at the end of the vaginal canal, and normal cervical/vaginal fluid. I like to show women their cervix with a mirror, and a speculum, if they want to see. Some are fascinated to see, others pass, but this picture captures it! That little hole in the center tells me this woman is not pregnant and has not yet given birth. A pregnant cervix is fuller, more vascular with a blue tinge. Even long after a woman births, it looks different - a bit more open and irregular. When pregnant and close to labor and as labor progresses, it softens, thins, shortens and opens to give birth. Now that is some superpower organ we are blessed to have!
