Friends and family, this week Mike shared that he has been diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma), after visiting the doctor for what he thought was a routine scan for an injury. He recently began chemo, and although the outcome is very positive, he has a long road ahead of him. Mike will be out of work during treatment for the next six months. We would like to show our love and support to Mike, Marcela and their three boys (Marko, Franco and Valentino). If you feel moved to help by donating, any amount will be appreciated. Our hope is to help lift some of the financial burden so that Mike can focus on his health and recovery. Please continue to keep the Coutu family in your prayers for strength, comfort and peace. We thank you all so much. God bless.

I missed another IV I am sick and tired of being a bad stick I want to be able to help patients this way but I can't and I'm sick of ppl saying oh everyone misses a stick once in a while no I miss ALL OF THEM! I HAVE A PROBLEM! And I can't fix it because no one believes me! Sometimes I feel like it's just luck and I drew bad stick out of the cosmic hat and will always be one but I don't want that!
Do any healthcare people know if there's such a thing as IV remedial? Is there a class or a job where people consistently come out really good?

The feeling when you get a life saved. Taking a person who is barely breathing and is unconscious, turning purple, to awake and talking.

Sometimes I wish I would get shot or stabbed or something
Some physical wound that people could see me heal from
I want to be the superhero on TV that stitches themselves back together
And people see, and acknowledge
I don't want to heal in silence anymore
I just want to have never been hurt
I feel like I've almost made it out
Some days I think that I have
But then I wish something horrible would happen and I know I'm not quite "normal"
Maybe this is as good as it gets
Maybe that's enough
At least for now anyway

Who called for backup?! Best part of 2022 was graduating from the @BayArea_TrainingAcademy accelerated EMT program, and then on the verge of tears blowing my own mind and passing the NREMT in one go! I can only describe the learning as being a Cliftnote doctor, and having to pass all the tests with no medical background…phew, I haven’t studied that hard in decades! I am now a hired EMT in San Francisco in an effort to beautify our city and clean up the streets, helping with the OD’s and fentanyl crisis, the psych wards, 911 calls, Covid surges and assist our stressed out medical workers. Enough b*tching and NIMBism, more doing! 🤜🏾 Thank you to my sweet angel Laura Hedli @StageSynapses for her redunkulously massive heart, support, love, and patience. And as well as the words of encouragement from my SF Brothers, my cool and quite young classmates, BATA Professor and incredible human being Steve Albright, and dedicated CEO Nicky Bahr who all had my six through this wild summer. And a big thank you to my talent agencies for your amount of patience! #Frontlines #EMTlife #FirstResponder #EmergencyMedicine #CalFire #CovidResponse #ParamedicLife #EMSlife #SFbay #BayLove #YayArea #BayAreaTrainingAcademy #Covid19 #SFFD #SFFire #Firefighter https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm0jJU2uK0T/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The time of the swim is fast approaching!  This morning’s practice swim was a cool 2.2km, so just about 1/3 of what I’ll need to do to meet my swimming goal.  As for the fundraising goal, that comes from folks like you, in whatever amount you can spare.  Right now we’re at $225 and the fundraising minimum is $350 - that could be $13 from just 10 people.  I know it’s hard these days, but this money is being raised to support the only critical care air ambulance in Maine - a profoundly essential service for anyone who lives, works, or plays in the Pine Tree State.

weekend highlights
-okay so stuff did pick up a bit
-but only a bit
-took this one dude three times in as many days. every system has a few "frequent flyers" and he is ours. poor guy.
-oh and shoutout to the provider who didn't want to give ativan to an alcoholic with the DTs because then "all the alcoholics will come to the ER asking for ativan when they run out of booze" a real class act yes much standard of care very compassion.
-so there are blood tubes and there are urine tubes and the urine tubes look exactly like blood tubes except a bit bigger and different colors and really, they just look like tubes for different kinds of blood tests, so like a good little amateur phlebotomist, I filled all the tubes with blood, and then the lab called with their collective underpants in a wad because they can't run their test, and I had to grovel a bit and promise to manage bodily fluids appropriately from now on. I'm a professional I swear.
-on the bright side I seem to have turned a corner with IVs. veins no longer explode if I look at them the wrong way. and no, it was not a lack of confidence, I was full on doing it wrong before, preceptors.
-this place still has an unacceptably low call volume. idk. I kind of want to start moonlighting somewhere so that I can get more patient contacts but I'd have to clear it with a bunch of ppl.
-I mean if nothing else I can rely on at least one person to call an ambulance almost every day......

Need to vent to the void real quick because it’s not enough to tell someone (maybe lol) but enough to urk me a lot
Fuckin ems workers can be so selfish
“Oh well too bad I picked all my shifts at x, should have told us sooner not to do that” AS IF YOU CANT CANCEL
but now because I was working the weird ass hours I was and yes partly my fault for not doing it after work tuesday but I’m annoyed they couldn’t sacrifice one of their three shifts so I could have AT LEAST ONE at one of the main trauma hospitals in the WEST like fuck dude why are you selfish and apathetic to other students trying to get the same quality education as you???
