It's December 28th. 🦋 On this day in 1973, US President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act into law. This act is considered to be one of the most significant and influential environmental laws in American history. At first glance, it appears to be no more than a federally-maintained list of animals on the brink of extinction, but it goes much deeper than that. This law supports federal agents, activists, and everyday people in their efforts to save endangered species.
The Endangered Species Act provides for the conservation of threatened and endangered plants and animals and their habitats – from iconic creatures like the Bald Eagle to lesser-known critters like the Island Night Lizard. The US Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency charged with enforcing the Endangered Species Act, currently lists nearly 1,500 endangered and threatened species in the US. The law requires all federal agencies to ensure that their actions don't jeopardize any endangered species or their habitats.
There have always been conflicting views of the Endangered Species Act, and the Supreme Court has often had to intervene to settle disputes. Conflicts have often involved non-governmental conservation groups like Greenpeace and their tireless efforts to block potentially damaging actions by real estate developers, fossil fuel companies (oil spills, strip mines, pipeline routes, fracking, etc.), and the military (national security issues such as Navy sonar vs. whales).
The US currently suffers from growing political extremism. The Endangered Species Act is barely strong enough right now to safeguard our animal and plant populations. We need to make sure it's able to continue protecting our biodiversity and natural habitats into the foreseeable future because the danger of mass extinctions is real and looming.
We can do this. We succeeded in bringing the whooping crane, gray wolf, monarch butterfly, grizzly bear, American alligator, and so many more species back from the brink of extinction. This isn't our first rodeo. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Don't interrupt this very important meeting, it looks like they're about to *seal* the deal...
These Hawaiian monk seals may not be great at business but they can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes and dive more than 1,800 feet! Hawaiian monk seals are only found in the Hawaiian archipelago, endemic to these islands. They are protected under the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and State of Hawai'i law. (Photo: Paulo Maurin. Only ONE DAY left to make our voices heard and demand that the gray wolf is returned to endangered status. Please click the link in my bio or go to www.relistwolves.org and click on the right hand box at the top of the page which says, "Take Action". It literally takes one minute to write to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (@USFWS) Wolves and other legislators. Wolves have lost their protected status and laws encouraging the slaughter of wolves have passed in a number of states. Lifting nearly all restrictions on their killing threatens the very existence of this species. A slaughter of wolves like this hasn't been seen in a century. A review to reestablish their protected status is open for comments on an emergency relisting with @usfws. It has only 50,000 signatures and closes this Monday, Jan. 31. Please, comment now and spread the word. We did not bring this species back from the brink of extinction just to have it slaughtered once more. @wolves_of_the_rockies has advice on what you might write about in your comment. Visit relistwolves.org today to act. Please also reach out to a letter to @secdebhaaland who can use her powers as head of @usinterior to put in place an emergency listing of Wolves to the Endangered Species List to protect them during the 230+ day review period by US Fish & Wildlife. They need protection now. 1849 C Street, N.W., Washington DC 20240, Phone (w employee directory); (202) 208-3100 #relistwolves @usfws @secdebhaaland #wolves #endangeredspeciesact @rene.hersey @leonardodicaprio https://www.instagram.com/p/CZXLvQvFu8j/?utm_medium=tumblr

A little mid-week #conservationoptimism |Repost @ilcp_photographers | The black-footed ferret was thought to be extinct twice in the 20th century due to human and natural threats. The last surviving population of black-footed ferrets was found in Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1981. Since then significant efforts have been made to recover the population and there are now over 300 animals living wild in North America. This is an example of the impact of the U.S. Endangered Species Act and those who helped create it like Nathaniel Reed. @worldanimalnews_ #Repost @worldanimalnews_ —— The National Marine Fisheries Service (@NOAA) recently announced that it would begin a status review to determine whether the highly imperiled Atlantic humpback #dolphin should be protected under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct. 🙏🐬 As previously reported by WAN, Atlantic humpback dolphin populations are in serious decline, and the species is already recognized as #CriticallyEndangered. Scientists estimate that no more than 3,000 Atlantic humpback dolphins remain in fragmented groups. They are at “an extremely high-risk of #extinction in the wild,” according to the IUCN. A 60-day comment period seeking public input is now open. 🐬 🚨Please leave a comment to support protecting Atlantic humpback dolphins under the Endangered Species Act & READ MORE: 🌍👉WorldAnimalNews.com (LINK IN OUR BIO)👆@worldanimalnews_ @peace_4animals #WorldAnimalNews https://www.instagram.com/p/CXYm5g3qGMQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Atelopus Survival Initiative The forests and streams of South and Central America are speckled with the colors of the rainbow, thanks to #HarlequinToads, known as the ‘jewels of the forests.’ But since the ‘80s, a deadly pathogen, exacerbated by habitat destruction, pollution, invasive predators and climate change, has pushed 83 percent of the 94 species assessed by the IUCN to the brink of extinction. More than 40 organizations came together this week to commit to protecting and restoring this incredible group of amphibians. The new #AtelopusSurvivalInitiative brings together the resources, expertise and passion to prevent the extinction of harlequin toads (or Atelopus) wherever they still survive, and to serve as an effective model for conserving other groups of threatened species. @rewild

Today I bring you another update on the gray wolf (Canis lupus) situation since they have been removed from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Species by the Trump Administration. As of January 4, 2021, they no longer have the protection of the Endangered Species Act, and that means states are entirely in control of the fate of wolves within their borders. The good news is that Colorado is already moving to make good on the promise of proposition 114 and reintroduce gray wolves to the western part of the continental divide ahead of schedule. The bad news, however, is that the states of Montana and Wisconsin are both working to push legislation that could undo all of the work done by conservationists to restore critical gray wolf populations in the contiguous United States. https://youtu.be/LSskqoS3Ruw #graywolf #wolfconservation #canislupus #environmentaljustice #conservation #colorado #wiconsin #montana #savethewolves #endangeredspeciesact #endangeredspecieslist #gothgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/CKjirvglANR/?igshid=pdxs8y862ke0

Why now? The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) just announced it will reclassify the humpback chub from "endangered" to "threatened"... while the National Park Service (NPS) just announced that introduced predatory brown trout are appearing upstream from the largest humpback chub population in the Canyon... and Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) just announced they are going to begin stocking introduced rainbow trout again. Both rainbow and brown trout eat chubs, though browns eat a lot more per fish than rainbows. • Humpback chub are surviving in a few tributaries of Grand Canyon, but they remain isolated by unnaturally cold temperatures in the Colorado River, thanks to Glen Canyon Dam. A catastrophic event in one tributary, the Little Colorado River, would wipe out the vast majority of the humpback chubs. Scientists still don't understand the main drivers of humpback chub survival and growth. • NPS is worried about the spread of undesirable non-native species in Glen and Grand Canyons and creating a plan to deal with them. So, why now??? • PC: Kim Reinhart-Mora Shown: the mouth of #Havasu Creek, which supports a small population of humpback chub thanks to an NPS relocation effort. • • #waterislife #protectgrandcanyon #coloradoriver #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesact #grandcanyon #grandcanyonnationalpark #humpbackchub #rivertrip #fish #river (at Grand Canyon National Park)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week proposed listing the 'I'iwi under the Endangered Species Act, which would help focus additional resources and conservation efforts on this once-common Hawaiian bird. The 'I'iwi has suffered drastic population declines as a result of habitat loss and avian malaria. From an ‘American Bird Conservancy’ Annual Report - Red Knot and chick. (Pic by #gerritvyn ) Efforts on behalf of the ‘rufa’ #redknot paid off in 2014, when the species was listed under the #endangeredspeciesact . This action will help to ensure adequate measures are taken to protect the species. Look at that little chick to the right.
