Remember when Bernie ran on nationalizing energy companies? Seems relevant.

Just in case this is relevant to anyone in the UK:
If your energy company tries to switch you over to a prepayment meter, your answer should be no.
Prepayment meters generally charge you a lot more, and if you run out of credit you have no electric (or gas) which means no heating and throwing away everything in your fridge and freezer.
You may still get charged a daily standing charge even when a prepayment meter has no credit.
Citizens Advice has information on grounds to refuse a prepayment meter, which includes asthma, arthritis, some mental health and mobility conditions and use of electric-powered medical equipment.
If you have a Smart meter, this makes it easier for the energy company to switch you over to prepayment. If you don't have a Smart meter, don't get one.
According to Disabled People Against Cuts, energy suppliers may have been installing prepayment meters illegally and the Good Law Project is asking people who've been notified of a switch to a prepayment meter to get in touch.

I am beyond fucking around now, this ghoul is driving us all into the dirt so Shell can make £32bn of profit. I’ve been dealing with mould all fucking winter because I haven’t been able to have the heating up beyond the bare fucking minimum and I am actually now sick because it, I keep coughing and wheezing and it’s because there is a huge patch of damp right by where I sleep and work. Please can we stop arguing about dead fucking failures from the 20th century and can we Kill These Fuckers, they are waging war on us and we have to act like it. Everyone is on strike and they are settling with no-one in the public sector because they want these disputes to lose so they can break the unions.  We need a general strike to force these fuckers out and then chase them from the very earth

so the UK energy cap has been drastically raised, which means from October we're going to be paying 3-4x as much for gas and electric as last year* - and this winter we'll likely get blackouts too, which means most people's heating won't work either (even gas heating needs electric to work). There will be a load of deaths, I predict - and we can only hope for a full on winter of discontent and general strikes and finally ousting the Tory cunts - but what are the alternatives now? Nationalisation needs to happen asap though
*and that includes the standing charges being raised 2-3x, which is a fucking outrage - like it doesn't suddenly cost 2-3x as much to do fuck all to maintain and improve the infrastructure so you can rake in maximum profit

Fellow Brits, this link was posted by Martin Lewis over on Twitter. You put in your annual usage and it tells you roughly what your monthly direct debit should be.
Mine was way out. They wanted to charge me £450 a month, the calculator in the link above estimated £136 a month. It was so far wrong that I queried it with Martin (he kindly confirmed that it was correct), and then ran my own figures which came out at £113 a month. Armed with this information, I went to my energy company who couldn't justify their figures and reduced my direct debit to £150 a month.
£300 a month saved. Well worth the couple of minutes it'll take to put your figures into the calculator.
The energy companies are screwing us every which way. Don't let them get away with it!

UK Energy Crisis - Reduce energy bills
I recently received a complimentary grant for home upgrades that could potentially save you approximately £580 per year. This grant is available to both homeowners and tenants receiving benefits, including those on Universal Credit. The installed boiler is a Worcester Bosch, which typically retails at £1,580, making it an excellent choice for those with boilers that are over 10-15 years old. The best part is that it won't cost you anything! If you're interested, you can apply for the grant via the link provided. Additionally, there are many other energy upgrades available for free, including insulation, which I also opted for. You can check which type of boiler you prefer on which.com, but I highly recommend Worcester Bosch.

UK energy bill payers:
-Don’t forget there’s now another energy price rise forecast for January, of about 13%.
-This means if you can fix your price at less than 100% increase (no really) it may be worthwhile doing this. Some energy companies are offering price fixes with no exit fee as well.
-If you intend to reduce your energy consumption over winter, don’t accept increases to your direct debit. In fact, the best thing to do MAY be to cancel your direct debit and pay bills as they arise (these will be more expensive in winter months).
-If you are a vulnerable customer, remember electricity companies cannot cut you off, make sure your electricity company is aware. There is also some help out there for some people who need electrical equipment to keep them alive.
-If you raise a complaint with your energy company, they cannot cut you off whilst that complaint is being resolved.
-If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll know you get cut off as soon as it runs out. You should be able to switch, even if you rent, as long as you’re not in debt to the energy company. Do check if it’s worthwhile for you to switch (e.g. if you have a fixed price on your electricity) BUT there are some estimates suggesting the average home on prepayment meters will need to top up £50 a WEEK in January, which I know most of us can’t afford!
Finally:
If you live somewhere where you’re not responsible for the energy bills but you do pay rent (e.g. uni halls, sheltered accommodation etc) be aware these are NOT covered by the price cap, and you may unfortunately see rent rises to cover the very high energy bills you may face over the winter. I don’t have advice as to what to do about this, as there doesn’t seem to be an easy solution, but just be aware it may happen.

There's been a bunch of nonsense talked about the Don't Pay campaign, but it's confirmed today that the average energy bill will go up to £3549 per year. Cornwall Insight say the cap will be over £6000 by April 2023. Most working class people cannot afford this and nobody should have to.
If you are not on a prepayment meter, there is no risk in signing up to this campaign. They won't go ahead unless they get a million participants and in any circumstance, you don't get your energy cut off right after missing a payment. You get at least 28 days to pay your bill, and I used to routinely delay paying for months. You can buy extra time by sending a meter reading when you get an estimated bill, by changing your tarrif, etc.
The power to withhold payment is the only power we have in this situation.
