8 - No Strip Poker

"This isn't just a game for fun, Jesper," Kaz grumbled as he separated the cards into seven piles. He kept the remaining cards in a stack by his hip. I guess he decided he was going to be the dealer, and no one interjected. "Everyone has a 'tell', you all know that. We're playing this to observe others' reactions and then call them out at the end of the game."

"So we're gonna point out each others' flaws in order to suppress them during a negotiation or a fight?" I asked, my voice dripping with mockery, the idea seemed smart, yet damaging. Kaz nodded to me, he seemed to want to glare at me, but you could say he suppressed it.

"So this is not strip poker?" Jesper asked with a whine. I laughed a bit as almost everyone objected. Nina seemed pretty on board with the idea though. With all the usual shenanigans out of the way, the game began.

Everyone picked up the deck dealed to them, inspecting their hand. I had a pair of sixes, but that most likely wasn't good enough to win. I knew if I lied during the game my lower lip would quiver, giving me away. I have to say nothing if asked, but I need to seem confident to fool.

"Give two cards, darling," I said to Kaz with a smirk. He passed them to me as I discarded my useless three of clubs and ten of hearts. I now held an additional six and a joker. Holy saints, four of a kind and an ace. That ranks me above a full house and under a straight flush. I suppressed my glee and stared down at my cards blankly. I was aware that everyone was darting glances around the room, attempting to spot an awkward movement of someone else.

Matthias huffed and threw his cards onto the table, "I fold," he said with a boiling rage. Nina gave him a soft kiss on the cheek before looking back at her hand. When Kaz nodded, everyone placed down their luck.

Inej had a three of a kind, of kings. Very good.

Jesper had nothing.... What could have been a royal flush was ruined by a single two of clubs.

Wylan had two of a kind, of threes.

Nina had two sets of two of a kinds.

Finally, my gaze fell off Kaz's hand. A straight flush.

I bottled up my frustration as Kaz reshuffled the cards and Jesper complained. I felt my competitive spirit shoot through my veins. Poker was a weekly event back on the ship, it was the only way my father respected me. Now, I felt the need to win every time. But I also wanted to win to beat Kaz Brekker.

I looked up at the pale boy with scarred lips, he ignored my stare- well, my glare. I finally spewed out words driven by a lust for winning, not testimonial thought,

"Let's make bets," I said, with a sweet undertone in my voice. It was like mixing honey into warm tea. Everyone turned to my direction as I broke the tense silence, I guess we all were competitive. "Information is much more valuable than any coin. Whoever wins each round gets to ask a question -that must be answered—, to anyone here." I spoke with enfaces on each word, a smirk dancing on my plush lips. Jesper and Wylan smiled, and Nina let out an approving giggle. Kaz nodded, but did not show a sliver of opinion.

"Well, let's see how confident you are, Y/n," Kaz rasped, but there was a hint of amusement in his gravely voice. I looked at my hand, just a two of a kind, but it was of Queens. I asked for three cards, and others needs followed in suit. My hand now consisted on two queens and two kings. My bite was going to be underwhelming compared to my bark...

Everyone revealed their hand, darting gazes past the other cards laid out in. Nina won with a royal flush, which caused my body to soften on the inside, at least Kaz did not win after the spectacle I made. My competitive nature often got in the way of my judgement. Nina made a humming sound as she leaned against Matthias before looking directly at Inej.

"What's the weirdest thing you've observed while spying..?" She inquired with deep curiosity igniting in her eyes. Inej laughed softly before thinking for a moment.

"One time I saw a woman singing opera to... maybe 12 chickens sitting on her

couch-," the Waith could barely keep a straight face as she spoke, smirking at just the thought of the sight.

"I would pay to see that, the women could get rich of Kruge," I remarked with a giggle. Inej smiled at me with glittering eyes, and the game resumed.

A few rounds past before I won, but no alarming questions had been asked yet. Everyone seemed to just be dipping their toes in the shallow end of a deep pool of secrets. As I looked at my new hand of cards, I had a perfect full house, but everyone would know my deck was perfect if I didn't draw cards for the first time. I have to risk it. My anxiety spiked slightly, but I had to keep my heart rate steady, Nina would know if it sped up. I asked for one card, and luckily it was a joker. I could replace the card I had just discarded.

"I gotta' fold," Jesper whined, his gambling addiction seemed to be having a low this round. The remaining players placed their cards on the table. Everyone's eyes were glued on my hand; my perfect hand; the winning hand. Kaz didn't show signs of frustration, but I knew he was. He was so close to winning, just like I had been the very first round. My competitive advantage bubbled in my throat, my ego boiling over. I smirked and turned to Kaz,

"Why do you were gloves all the time?" I asked with curiosity lined with amusement. Everyone in the room seemed to tense up, we all most likely knew very little, but we had heard the rumors.

Brekker's hands are stained with blood that can't be washed off.

Dirtyhands has sharp fingers like the devil.

Kaz's hands are scarred beyond belief, the fate of his work.

Kaz clutched his cane tightly and stood up, his tall form towering over my hunched body.

"Choose one of the theories of Ketterdam's voices. They're all true enough," he responded. And with that, he began walking outside, opening the cabin's door. He stopped at the doorway, his strong posture framed by the blistering white outside. "I've learned enough from this game, you all need to improve your sloppy skills, especially Y/n. The quivering of your pretty lips will get your teeth knocked out."

As the door slammed shut, we all sat in silence. The tension from the game lingered as the quiet in the room festered. I couldn't help but feel embarrassed, Kaz was cold and bitter, but he was important. I had to value his feelings, or at the very least, his reactions. My cheeks grew red, but I sighed and attempted to keep face. When in doubt, become seductive; desire trumps all.

"Soooo, now that the party pooper is gone, maybe be could play strip poker-,"

"Please play without me, dolls, I'm going to reason with... the party pooper in question," my voice was a soft purr, one that drew in the most modest of people. I lifted myself with grace, sauntering out the door into the cold, but not before slipping on Kaz's jacket.

The bitter boy had not made it far in the short time, he was just a hundred or so paces ahead of me, limping his way into the cold. I wasn't sure why, but I assumed it was to clear his troubled mind.

I finally made my way to his side, and without acknowledging me, he continued his brooding trek.

"Did you just come out here to suffer for fun or did you want to escape my question?" I made my tone extra clear, my honeydew voices melting the cold feelings. Kaz said nothing for a while, his jaw clenching slightly.

He halted and cocked an eyebrow. His head turned and his high stature caused him to crane his neck in order to make eye contact with me.

"We cannot escape our pasts, Y/n, all we can do is carefully cultivate a collection of present actions to allow the world to assume our upbringings," he voice sounded choked, strained, but he still held himself with pride. I noticed how he said 'we', including himself in the population of whom made the decision he described.

I sighed softly and narrowed my eyes, peering through my eyelashes at the Kaz. I didn't apologize for my question, I didn't need to, but I gave Kaz a looking of understanding.

"These personas we create may be true enough, Kaz, but they're simply an escape from the hell we're stuck in." I stepped closer to him, my stare hardening. "You have your tells too, Kaz Brekker, you may have a perfect front you present to the world, I'm guilty of it as well, but you're still just a scared kid."

Kaz stiffened as I inched closer to his face, taunting him. I stood on the tips of my toes, our noses nearly touching. I didn't have to use my Grisha abilities to sense his heartbeat quickening.

"We met before, didn't we?"

Can be less emotional than the other 3s.

Mista isn't really great at noticing when you're feeling dysphoric specifically, but he can tell when you're upset. He'll usually come up to you and wrap an arm around your shoulder and pull you into a hug or embrace of some kind.

"Hey, you good?"

It doesn't take much for you to give him a hint about why you're feeling so terrible.

"Well that's just shit!" Mista spat. "I'm going to shoot your dysphoria in the face, I swear to god."

He takes to your room and brings you things that you say you'd rather look like, and even gets you binders and gender affirming clothes from his own closet. He'll buy you something if he thinks that it'll make you feel better about how you look.

"I think you look handsome all the time, but hot damn!"

He'll go out of his way to make sure that you have at least one thing you like about how you look, and will go through drastic measures to get you something.

Mista compliments you insistently, but in the most bro dude way.

rewrite of the villains of valley view part 1: concepts

now I know this looks weird here but I don't hate the show I just think it's a bit generic for such a unique concept

First the most unimportant part I think this would have been much better as a cartoon the series could have taken a much more creative route with the humor and action but being live action doesn't make it boring to the contrary the costume design specially for the super suits is excellent .

I think one issue lies in the concept and how the show potrays it you see this is a show about villains in hiding so the characters hardly use their powers in interesting ways and they don't do anything villainous ever even in the Christmas episode where their still supposed to be villains.

this is an easy fix simply have the have the episode A plot be a problem and a B plot be flashback with a similar situation showing the difference in how the characters would react then vs now, in the original show the b plots would be pointless shenanigans not even funny just pointless this is much more fun and interesting cause get to see more powers and the characters actually being villains

One thing the show does is potray both heroes and villains as a sperate set of species, no I'm not making that up their are lines in the show that make it seem like this is the case, in the mid season finale of season 2 they act like villains are being treated like second class citizens not that it's their motivation but like their a race that's just different, this makes no sense because supervillains as we know them are criminals there's even joke about that but they gloss over it

They can't have a scene like that because we don't know what a villain is in this world cause all villainous things we see come from onyx and his daughter who we only see chase the maddens so it's clear they expect us to have a basic definition of heroes and villains so they wouldn't have to explain it

To fix this I suggest just having an umbrella term for people with powers so there's no confusion and motivations of characters are their own

Lastly I kinda like the way the show potrays heroes at first it looks kind like their going for something similar to boys specifically with starling but later we see starling helping Jake and she says that's what heroes do, to often do shows with "bad guys" as the main characters fall into making the good guys monsters but this show doesn't do that I like it and am putting more enfaces on it

  In the most bare bones explanation you could give about Tim was that he was your neighbor, your doors directly across from each other, and you two would spend time together sometimes. Though if you wanted to be more honest, it was more than just hanging out. But that would only be implied than anything if anyone were to notice the hair’s width of enfaces on the words ‘hanging out’ whenever you said them. You honestly couldn’t say anything about Tim himself if someone asked though. All you knew was some guy living in a bland mid apartment complex. But you had your theories. 

  Whenever you asked him about his life before coming to the apartments on the nights that you’d spend together, he’d just say that it wasn’t important or that it was nothing to concern yourself with. But there was this atmosphere brought on by how quickly he would say those words and the feeling that he was trying to light his cigarettes faster that gave those words the opposite meaning. He never makes friends with anyone. Always keeping people at the cut off of acquaintance, unless it was something like a boss or landlord. Pretty sure you were the only one who even managed to over step that cut via only having one foot past the line, but still being forced to keep your other foot at the acquaintance line. Honestly, you were probably only allowed to be one foot ahead because he wanted some type of company. 

  So the best theory that you had was that Tim was someone running away from something and making friends would have it catch up. What it was, you had no idea. But you guess Tim didn’t like it much since he’s possibly went and ran from it. There was the question that that brought on was why he felt like he couldn’t make any friends because of it. Which brings a new question.

  “Do you like it here?” you asked, breaking a silence that usually comes up touched after doing what hanging out with Tim typically meant. “What do you mean?” he responded. “Do you like it here,” you repeated, “Is there a reason why you’re here?” you add. “Do I need a reason to be here?” Tim asked with a tone that twisted it like you were saying he didn’t belong. “Not really.” you respond. “But a guy as attractive as you would usually have a a bunch of friends. Yet here you are, only giving people nods when they greet you and mostly keeping to yourself.” you remark. 

  “I don’t enjoy making friends.” Tim said. “No use.” he muttered under his breath. “And why is that?” you taunt. “Stuff happens when I make friends.” he said very vaguely but still sounding blunt, somehow. “And what ‘stuff’ would that be?” you remarked, not believing that this so called stuff was anything serious.

  “It’s none of your business!” Tim suddenly snapped, genuinely spooking you. “Okay,” you say upon recovering from that brief surprise, “Sorry for wanting to know why you keep to yourself so damn much.” you mumble. “Don’t worry yourself about it.” he commented, saying the same thing he has on usual nights. “I was just asking to get to know you. That’s all.” you mutter. “You don’t need to know anything,” he remarked, “I’m just here. That’s all to it.”. 

  “And me?” you ask. “What about you?” Tim asked back. “If you’re just here and don’t like being close to anyone, then why do you need me to keep you company.” you explain. In the most blunt way Tim has ever talked, almost as if it was a response he had packed in his mouth, Tim responds to you with “I don’t need you to keep me company.”. 

  You don’t know what you were expecting but for whatever reason, that sentence hurt a bit. He didn’t need you? Even though so many times you two hang out it’s because he asked to. Just like tonight. So what? You’re a fix? Is that what you are.

  “Well, okay then.” you simply remark. But judging by Tim’s reaction, you sounded upset. “That’s fine.” you say getting up from your spot. “Wait hold on.” Tim said trying to find something to say. “No, no. It’s fine.” you said as collected your things. “I get what you mean. Don’t worry. I get it now.” you remark, not really bothering to stop whatever you’re doing. 

  And you honestly didn’t. You didn’t stop. You just grabbed your stuff, not really having to walk of shame since you live right across the way.

Now I have not done one of these in a good while, as I have been in a kdrama slump and I have been taking a bit of a break from kdramas lately, aside from slowly getting myself through Alchemy of Souls. But you know I am a sageuk fan and one of the more promising dramas in the early 2023 lineup was Our Blooming Youth despite it looking and sounding, based on the title and the posters alone like more of a fluffy, rom-com period drama than the more serious or darker/moodier stuff that I prefer in my sageuks.

So it was a pleasant surprise when I watched the first episode and the tone of the whole thing had a lot more enfaces on mystery and the dark past of the crown prince and just the overall serious mood of it all. I did not expect the leading ladies entire family being poisoned and she being on the run trying to prove her own innocence. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t watch the teasers or read too much up on things.

The drama moves at a brisk pace (for now... I also could have said the same about Alchemy of Souls until that one hit a lull in the pacing) and introduces us quite early to the main conflict, the inner daemons of the characters and all of that without too much info dumping or anything.

It sure does feel like a standard sageuk with romance to it, that has not yet started to bloom... which I enjoy actually. It does not feel too cute or too airy but mature

I guess I could expected that since I knew that the drama was written by the person who did Romance is a Bonus Book and that one did have a good dash of romance and then more serious and mature tone to it. I remember I enjoyed the character arcs and the tone of that one really well.

I don't want to harp on a 'strong female character' or a kickass female lead thing, because I have mention it before that those types of measurements that is often given female character (but we never talk that way about male characters because they are all automatically interesting... right?) just because she fights a couple of guards and seems to be capable to land herself on her own feet and take charge of her own live as she figures out who killed her family and why.

But I will say that I enjoyed the time we have gotten from Min Jae Yi and she feels like a well rounded, interesting character who has her own story to tell within the narrative... which is all a character needs to be in order to be a 'good character' really. And even if she was not all that, even if she didn't fight anyone with a sword does not mean that she isn't a interesting character. Not every male character is a strong fighter, stop expecting every female character to be that way or else they are boring. 

The crown prince feels very much like the standard male lead with a tragic backstory, but I enjoy it. The background character are all quite standard... or what I expect from these sort of stories but it’s a well rounded cast and there are enough quirky characters and enough serious ones to make it work.

I very much enjoyed those first two episodes. I think it's a good choice of drama that could potentially kick my kdrama slump in the butt and I am excited about this murder investigation unfolds and how it all ties together to those inner demons of that cursed crown prince.

Expecting Better

• underweight is better than overweight for pregnancy. It is important to maintain exercise

• research shows a few alcoholic drinks is ok, just not excessive, and a cup of coffee a day is okay. Personally I wouldn’t risk it

• kegel exercises make pushing easier

“A Passion for Ignorance” and for Denials and Negations with Professor Renata Salecl

Renata Salecl is a professor at the School of Law at Birkbeck College, University of London and Senior researcher at the Institute of Criminology at the faculty of Law in Ljubjana, Slovenia.

Firstly, we need to understand the premises of Salecl’s reasoning behind her introduction of the understandings of the Psychoanalytic Theory and Social Attitudes. This describes the mechanisms of our ego defences which serve to protect the individual against external and internal threats.

Sigmund Freud proposed physic could be converted into energy, taken from the concept that heat can be transferred into mechanical energy. Our lack of awareness for our unconscious wishes, results in driven or self-defeating behaviour. According to Freud personality is based on the dynamic interactions of three components.

Id – which Freud believes is the source of psychic energy present from birth. Aspects of personality that give us our instinctive and primitive behaviours. Ego – which emerges to realistically meet the needs and wishes of “id” and Superego - (our conscience) is our moral justification of societal rules which forces the desires and demands of the sub conscience to be met not only realistically but morally.

Salecl suggests we “embrace ignorance and denial” either through passive or active behaviour to convince ourselves that the information we receive is not relevant to us. Is ignorance our alibi or a useful unknown? A defence mechanism to protect ourselves from harsh realities and situations that our minds can not process such as wars and acts of violence. Passion for ignorance a term Salecl refers to, taken from French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan who described how his patients avoided acknowledging the causes of their anguish, although they came to him claiming to know what lay behind their pain.

Salecl gives examples of our choice to ignore what is going on in the world around us, some from her own experiences. She believes that we have become disillusioned in our own belief that nothing can change or will change regardless of what we honestly believe.

People are disillusioned and divided. With the rise of misinformation and media campaigns it begs the question; “Are we drowning in information but starved of knowledge?” (John Nesbitt)

Types of farming including the spread of Ebola in nature through enormous plantation farms, where the virus jumps from wild to domestic animals, mass cutting of rain forests in South America which is causing a change in the flora and fauna. Salecl suggests we may want to make changes as individuals but without working as a group we have no political power to make this change. She believes that we face extreme economic problems and less equality within society as a direct result.

Salecl also suggests we put too much enfaces on forensics and live in the belief that, if we find even a shred of forensic evidence it will lead us to the criminal. In America, the misapplication of forensic science contributed to 52% of wrongful convictions in Innocence Project cases and false or misleading forensic evidence contributed to 24% of all wrongful convictions.

Salecl believes we should embrace doubt. I believe we should stand up for what we believe but for most of society, this is too far removed from our realities.

Scans from Group 2 showed a significant reduction of artifacts (p=0.01), compared to Group 1. Statistical significance was assessed by a two sample t-test with an alpha level of 0.05.ģ0 diseased eyes were imaged (15 per group). The superficial retinal layer slab of each scan was analyzed with this metric, and the average displacement across the image was used to compare the two groups. Given that in dense OCTA cubes neighboring B-scans have similar vessel morphology, a custom algorithm quantified vessel jaggedness by computing the normalized cross-correlation and lateral displacement between consecutive B-scans. 14 normal eyes were scanned using both LSO configurations while the subject was asked to repeat a systematic eye motion pattern during acquisition. In addition to the higher resolution LSO, Group 2 also used an improved version of the FastTrac TM algorithm. Diseased subjects were imaged using one of two acquisition settings:ġ) Group 1 (n=15): An LSO with 50µm x 40µm tracking resolutionĢ) Group 2 (n=15): An LSO with 25µm x 25µm tracking resolution PLEX ® Elite 9000 (ZEISS, Dublin, CA) with LSO-based tracking was used to acquire 3x3mm OCTA scans, centered at the fovea, on normal eyes and eyes with retinal disease. We analyzed the effects of fundus tracking resolution on these common artifacts. Errors in such corrections can lead to artifacts in the OCTA enface image, visible as vessel jaggedness. Line Scan Ophthalmoscopes (LSO) are commonly used in Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) systems to image the fundus of the eye in order to track and correct for motion.
