End of Year Fic Recs
Thank you @sallysavestheday for the tag and the kind rec 💕
Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).
Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).
Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Five WIPS from 2023:
we will make this place our home by @leucisticpuffin. 200k, AU, kidnap fam. The loveliest softest 1970s AU! It feels like reading all my favourite cozy childhood books and the characterisation is impeccable (Maglor my DARLING). Cannot recommend enough.
seabird by @welcomingdisaster. 24k, AU, russingon. "Give me a quick russingon prompt for smut week," Lena said. I obliged. This happened. Anyway the dynamics are so so good and the characterisation is so so good (Maedhros you little IDIOT) and the suspense!! is so good!! Everyone go and read it immediately.
ashes, ashes, dust to dust — the devil's after both of us by @that-angry-noldo. 9k, AU, Finarfin and Maedhros and Maglor. Maedhros and Maglor come up with a plan to capture the High King of the Noldor in return for the Silmaril. SUCH good m&m (I am a single-issue voter ok!) and incredible Finarfin/Eonwe dynamics as well, I cannot wait to see where this fic goes next.
Atandil by @eilinelsghost. 105k, canon compliant, Finrod/Bëor. The best worldbuilding, THE most gorgeous flowing heartrending prose, absolutely incredible characterisation... I am so so obsessed with this series you can't imagine. Still weeping over part 14 a month later.
And Love Grew by @polutrope. 8k, canon compliant, kidnap fam. A newer WIP, but I'm already so hooked! So far the characterisations of all the Fëanorians have been delicious and there are SO many compelling OCs as well.
Five one-shots from 2023:
Sea-Bells and Sunlight by @actual-bill-potts. 4.5k, canon compliant, Finrod and Lúthien and Beren. Lúthien finds both Finrod and Beren in the Halls of Mandos. LOVE the shifting dreamlike nature of Mandos here, and my darling Lúthien is so so perfect. Also all the Finrod feels... aahhh.
Somewhere To Return To by @searchingforserendipity25. 4k, canon compliant, Maedhros and Maglor, russingon. Just the softest loveliest most heartbreaking post-Thangorodrim fic. LetMaedhrosNap2k23.
the world to come by @arrivisting. 4k, AU, Fëanor/Nerdanel. A chilling imagining of Arda Remade, featuring some incredible Fëanor characterisation and the most gorgeous beautiful prose.
Quicksilver by @clothonono. 26k, AU, Indis/Míriel. Beautiful beautiful writing and wonderful characterisation. One of the fics that made me adore Indis.
What Will the Kinslayer Lord Do Next? by @tanoraqui. 3k, canon compliant, Maedhros and Maglor. Ok this is a spin-off of The Minstrel and the Star which you should also read because it's excellent but. again. SINGLE-ISSUE VOTER. and this is a top-tier m&m fic, all that tenderness and grief and bitterness and some delicious musings on the Oath and Silmarils.
Five older fics:
and one man, in his time, plays many parts by @lintamande. Canon compliant, Maglor and his younger brothers. One of my favourite Mithrim-era fics.
seven years of holidays by @jouissants. 10k, AU, kidnap fam. Elrond and Elros find a strange elf in the woods. Excellent kidnap fam dynamics and absolutely beautiful prose.
A reason to live (a reason it is not permissible to die) by Chestnut_pod. 27k, canon compliant, Eärendil/Elwing. Absolutely incredible Sirion worldbuilding and a wonderful depiction of Elwing.
elves, once by @ceescedasticity. 43k, canon compliant. THE most horrifyingly plausible theory of how orcs came to be. Both heartbreaking and fascinating.
It's the New World, Darling by @avantegarda. 107k, AU. A truly delightful 19th-20th century AU of the silm. Nothing makes me laugh as much as Victorian!Fëanorians.
Five self-recs:
The hard bit!
Ilimbë. 15k, canon compliant, Fëanor/Nerdanel. I still think this is the best thing I've ever written! Check it out if you're interested in Greek mythology, or in baby Fëanor making an idiot of himself.
the fairest stars. 78k, AU, Maedhros & Maglor, russingon, Beren/Lúthien and more. Probably my favourite of my fics, if not objectively my best. I know I love to hate on tfs for being completely insane, but I'm also pretty proud of it. It's got some of my best m&m, a rather in-depth exploration of the nuances of the Oath of Fëanor, and SO SO MANY cliffhangers. A silly bullet point fic that is also somehow the one I've put the most thought and effort into over the year.
in the breaking. 2k, canon compliant, Maedhros & Maglor. Still very fond of this one.
Inflection. 9k, canon compliant, kidnap fam. A very difficult one to write, but I'm proud of the result.
The Stranger. 928 words, canon compliant, Maedhros and Maglor. A very tiny little ficlet, but I like how I captured the post-Thangorodrim dynamics here.
Going to tag everyone I mentioned here, if you'd like to share!

Ruin on the Mountainside
The Feanorian forces hadn’t quite been willing to give up their place in the war, even as the Armies of the West pushed them further and further to the eastern front. They fought on, and they kept the eastern flank clear.
The day the dragon crashed down on the mountain, their tattered encampment threw a celebration. The survivors were evenly split between Feanarian faction Noldor and Northern Sindar, with a handful of Laegrim left with them, and more than half of their force was former thralls, at this juncture.
A celebration was certainly in order, for the destruction of the Iron Hells. A bonfire, a few treats people had been saving away, good wine (which had probably been begged, borrowed, or stolen from the Amanyar), and it was never hard to convince Maglor to play.
He played a couple of old dancing reels, a jaunty number of his own composition about the fall of the dragon, and then handed his harp off to a willing volunteer and went to find his brother.
Their General wasn’t celebrating with their troops. Maedhros stood, looking north in the moonlight.
Maglor slipped his right hand into his brother’s left. It was the first time in what felt like years that he hadn’t been holding a sword.
Maedhros brushed their shoulders together, acknowledgement and welcome, but kept his eyes on the ruin of the mountain.  It felt strange, to be without words, but he had no idea what to say to his brother in this moment.
Maedhros saved him the trouble. “I appreciate the irony.”
Maglor made a curious noise.
“That the Mariner wore a silmaril when he crushed the Pits,” Maedhros said. “And also that one of his own creations destroyed the place.”
“Both are neat pieces of work,” Maglor agreed. “Eru has a sense of theme.”
Maedhros laughed, a sound Maglor heard so rarely now. “I’m trying to decide how hard to blaspheme,” he said, still smiling.
“Please do not,” Maglor replied.
Maedhros bumped their shoulders together. “You have to admit, not every theme of the Song has been quite so well composed.”
“When your soloist is enough of a diva to try to steal the show, the composer can hardly be blamed,” Maglor retorted, gesturing at the ruined mountain with the hand not still tucked in his brother’s.
Maedhros inclined his head. “True enough.”
“What now?” Maglor finally dared to ask.
“There’s nowhere left to hide,” Maedhros reflected. “He’ll come forth soon enough, and the Powers will take him down.” Then he shrugged. “After that it’ll be a mopping up campaign,” he predicted. “It’ll be slow and terrible, probably, trying to clear up all the creatures.”
Maglor looked west, seeing the fires of the encampment of the Host.  “You think they can beat him?”
“They sent Eonwe,” Maedhros answered. “They’ll send Tulkas too if that’s what it takes.”
Maglor hummed. Then he turned south, towards the slowly-encroaching sea. “And then?” he asked softly.
Maedhros looked down at him, moonlight catching on his scarred face and making his eyes glow. “Then we take what’s ours,” he answered. “And then we’ll see.” And he looked away from the mountain for the first time, following Maglor’s gaze south. “A new world,” he said quietly.
Maglor leaned into him. “That sounds nice,” he murmured.
Maedhros kissed the top of his head. “Maybe it can be,” he replied.

So I was thinking about Eonwë
(as you do, especially when the Lil Birb is celebrating his week).
And I remembered how in the early writings he's the son of Manwë and Varda. So, he's got a star-themed parent and a bird-themed parent.
And we know who has the same pattern of parents (gender reversed): Elrond and Elros. (+obligatory mention of kidnap fam, but let's ignore them for now)
Therefore: Eonwe should have a brother, also with a name starting with E sister, also with a name starting with E, because why not, we need more ladies!
(Yes, my logic is "those characters have similar theme in one place so they need to be similar in one more place. It is a very valid logic. :D )
So, the question is:
No, we aren't making her to be dead just to give Birb more angst, we don't fridge characters! (But the mail-lady is canonically dead so that's an exception.)
When her job is decided, we can work on the name and other details.

Hey, were you the one who posted how Maglor himself thought the oath and kinslayings were such evil acts? If so, how come there are those who still believe the second and third kinslaying is justified when Maglor himself thought it to be such an evil deed? I really need like a solid reasoning cause I was talking to someone who still believes the kinslayings were justified/needed and doesn't take my "murder is wrong" thing as a reason lol
That was indeed my post! If we're thinking of the same one. I've definitely made a post like that.
I mean I don't really know what to say besides "murder is wrong" lol If we can't agree on that um. I don't really know where we go.
The argument in favor of the kinslayings that I've seen usually boils down to property rights. Because the Silmarils are the rightful (and that's honestly debatable) property of the Feanorians, anyone who keeps the Silmarils from them deserves what they get, basically.
Which is. Kind of bonkers as a moral philosophy, even if you DO buy that the Feanorians have an uncontested right to the Silmarils. #1: We're punishing theft or conversion with DEATH now? That's acceptable to us? #2: The harm the Feanorians caused went far beyond the individual who possessed the Silmaril (Dior in the Second Kinslaying and Elwing in the Third). Even if Dior had taken that Silmaril right out of Maedhros' hand and spit in his eye on the way out it wouldn't justify the wholesale slaughter of an entire kingdom. They literally murdered children over things. Items. Stuff. Magical cool stuff yeah--but they valued it over lives. Does anyone honestly think Tolkien would have written a story agreeing with that as a moral view?
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." (Thorin's final words, The Hobbit)
I don't know how you look at Maedhros and Maglor--the ONLY two of SEVEN sons to survive through the Third Kinslaying--and think THEY think they did the right thing. Five of their brothers have now died in assaults on other Elves which they began. Maglor argues for breaking the oath there, he resists Maedhros' drive to the Fourth Kinslaying (until he doesn't), and at the end of it all, he throws his precious Silmaril into the sea. Maedhros kills himself over it. These are not the actions of people who feel GOOD about where their lives have gone and the actions they've taken. Tolkien is so blatantly obvious about the Feanorians being in the wrong it's always a little wild to me that the KINSLAYINGS get defended.
On the note of the Fourth Kinslaying, let's not forget that: That after everything, after the War of Wrath is over and everyone is ready to go home and see their families and be at peace, a whole group of Elves get murdered by Maglor and Maedhros again over the Silmarils. A group--Eonwe's guard--of people who had survived a war with MORGOTH die because Maedhros and Maglor weren't willing to break their oath.
An oath which Tolkien casts as wicked from the very start--something that was always likely to bring them to evil acts.
"Then Feanor swore a terrible oath. His seven sons leapt straightway to his side and took the selfsame vow together, and red as blood shone their drawn swords...and many quailed to hear the dread words." ("Of the Flight of the Noldor," The Silmarillion)
Furthermore, as Dior points out in some versions outside Silm proper, at the time the Second Kinslaying is committed, Melkor still has two of the Silmarils. Even if Dior had handed over Luthien's Silmaril--to the people who had kidnapped and attempted to forcibly marry and presumably rape his mom; and also tried to murder her and his father later on--the oath is still not fulfilled, because Melkor has two.
The fact that the Feanorians choose to pursue Luthien's Silmaril with violence and bloodshed rather than make a go at the two that Melkor has has always revealed their hypocrisy to me. They chose Luthien's Silmaril because they knew it would be easier to get than the ones that Melkor has. Easier to kill other Elves if they don't give you what you want, than to attack or infiltrate Angband. Even now, when they know it's possible--because Beren and Luthien did it, and they had FAR fewer resources at hand than the Feanorians (and for the record, Fingon also successfully infiltrated Angband; Gwindor and others have successfully escaped from Angband)--they choose to slay other Elves instead. Say again the Second Kinslaying was "necessary"?
This is how Tolkien describes the attack on the Havens:
"And so there came to pass the last and cruelest of the slayings of Elf by Elf; and that was the third of the great wrongs achieved by the accursed oath. For the sons of Feanor that yet lived came down suddenly upon the exiles of Gondolin and the remnant of Doriath, and destroyed them." ("Of the Voyage of Earendil," The Silmarillion)
Does this description sound like people taking justified action? And let's not forget, in this battle, the Feanorians' own troops are so horrified by their actions that they turn against them.
"In that battle some of their [the Feanorians'] people stood aside, and some few rebelled and were slain upon the other part aiding Elwing against their own lords...Too late the ships of Cirdan and Gil-galad the High King came hasting to the aid of the Elves of Sirion; and Elwing was gone, and her sons." ("Of the Voyage of Earendil," The Silmarillion)
Members of the Feanorians' own people find their actions so terrible they cannot simply join those who stand by and refuse to attack the Havens, but they actively join the fight on the side of the Havens. Moreover, the heroic Gil-galad arrives intending to stop the Feanorians and aid the Havens. Sure, he arrives too late--but his intent is made clear: the Feanorians are the villains here, who need to be stopped.
And I don't think it is uncontested that the Silmarils belong to the Feanorians. For one, they were created entirely and only by Feanor; none of his sons had anything to do with it. And for two, the universe itself has deemed by the end that the Feanorians no longer have a property right in them, when the Silmarils burn the hands of Maedhros and Maglor because of all the evil they've committed. The jewels themselves will not be touched by these people who have done so much wrong. Eonwe tries to warn them about this before they even commit the Fourth Kinslaying.
"And they [Maedhros and Maglor] sent a message therefore to Eonwe, bidding him yield up those jewels...But Eonwe answered that the right to the work of their father, which the sons of Feanor had formerly possessed, had now perished, because of their many and merciless deeds, being blinded by their oath, and most of all because of their slaying of Dior and the assault upon the Havens." ("Of the Voyage of Earendil," The Silmarillion [emphasis added])
Like...I don't know how the book could be more clear that the Kinslayings were wrong and that Maedhros and Maglor were in the wrong.
I think fans are so invested in the Feanorians they're willing to bend over backwards to find some view where they didn't actually commit horrific war crimes and were in fact in the right. But that's just not the story Tolkien wrote. Also, you can like them and still admit they did horrible things. You are allowed to like characters who are in the wrong!

More headcanons about Vanyarin culture
The Vanyar split into numerous clans once they settle in Valinor. The clans are mostly autonomous. Ingwe, as "chief of chieftains", mediates any conflict between them and has absolute authority, but rarely uses it. He focuses on official relations with the Valar, Noldor, and Teleri, and on managing his own clan, which consists of the royal family plus whoever they choose to bring in.
The Maiar are pretty much like cousins/best friends to the Vanyar. Aiwendil will randomly show up to Elemmire's place to dance to her newest composition. Ingwion has called Eonwe his brother multiple times.
There are quite a few half-Maiar half-Vanyar elves running around Valinor. Luthien gets to meet some of them.
The Vanyar love creating art, but as a philosophical/spiritual practice, they will often destroy their most beloved work after a time. The Noldor are appalled by this, as are Aule and Yavanna. The latter two however come to recognize the value of this tradition after the Darkening, although they still don't approve of it.
The Vanyar keep Cuivienen in their collective memory. They practice many of the old rituals and tell the Valinor-born generations everything about Middle Earth, the good and the bad. This prevents them from idealizing/romanticizing Cuivienen like the Noldor do. This is also why Fingolfin and Finarfin aren't impressed by Feanor's speech in Tirion.

1, 7, and 16 for the violence asks?
thank you dear 💖
1. the character everyone gets wrong
caranthir. oh my god it's caranthir. i swear the narrator specifically hates him. the parts about the haladin basically go:
-green elves: told them to fuck off, not chastised for running people out of the area, whole thing is portrayed with a neutral tone
-caranthir: brought his people to the haladin's defenses and offered up land for them if they wanted to go a bit north, and the narration slaps "and seeing, over late, what valor there was in the Edain" on him for it
-doriath: initially told them to fuck off even though the iathrim didn't actually live in brethil, and finrod had to talk his great-uncle around so they could stay. they had to pay rent (read: guard a river crossing) as part of the bargain to live there, and however that agreement was phrased caused her to go 'they killed my father and brother, what, do you think i'd be friends with the orcs? elves are weird if you think that's possible.' (honestly that response makes me laugh, but wow.)
i don't take anything the narrative says about him at face value, particularly the bit about him and dwarves, specifically because of this. because if the narration is going to put the sort of spin on a situation that makes the only one who actively helped them look bad, then how can i trust that the rest isn't just wildly overblown rumor and bad faith takes? he definitely got into an argument with his cousin, but in that same meeting maedhros called thingol an ineffectual loser and somehow came out looking good. so. -shrugs-
to bring this back to the actual question: that ^ is what canon says, and a lot of people seem to take it at face value that caranthir is the evil, mean, bad-tempered one of the bunch. even though he is also mentioned as an influential trading partner (you need diplomacy in order for trade to work). even though HE didn't forment any coups, or try to keep anyone prisoner, or directly lead to any of his cousins dying horribly. even though he largely minded his own business, he gets written as the mean one
i'm not bitter
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
okay, i gotta preface this by saying i dont hate him, i'm just. tired of his face
maedhros. he's fine??? i just don't think he's all that much more interesting than the rest of his family, and i feel like everything that could be said about him kind of already has been?
also since i know fandom at large is never going to stop talking about him, ever, i wish folks would back off of the (imo baseless) third-parent thing and spend more attention on his cheeky-bastard aspect. telling the king of the continent he sucks at his job is one of the most interesting things he did, even if it wasn't particularly advisable, diplomatically-speaking
16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
i do not understand diva!maglor characterization at all. the self-obsession part of it in particular. this boy's entire thing is that he is so stupidly loyal he followed his family into exile, an inadvisable oath, and kinslayings, plural, because he loves his family. he was so against going after the silmarils in eonwe's camp that there is a recorded argument about it with actual direct quotation, but he went in the end. because his brother asked him to
this goes against the prompt a lil because i've only seen it a few times and i don't know that it's all that popular, but each of those instances stands out in my mind because, again, it makes absolutely no sense to me. any sort of characterization where he thinks of himself first over his family or his people goes directly against his actions. he's specifically the one mentioned as having a personality closest to his mother, lady "desired to understand minds rather than master them." he has the most moments focusing on his emotional state of anyone in this book (i don't know where the post went, but someone did actually check this) and it's usually about being grieved and tired and wanting to go home. notably, the word "cherish" is the one used to refer to how he treated elrond and elros
i literally have no idea how you get "vapid and snobby diva" out of that. i do not
ask game here

For some reason, my brain decided to think about Knock at the Cabin at the same time as kidnap fam, and I'm making it y'all's problem.
(bear with me, I promise it'll be okay)
Let's say at the end of the War of Wrath, Sauron escapes, and is making his way through the wilderness. Completely by chance, he happens on an abandoned settlement where Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond, and Elros have been staying.
(For context: the twins are young adults, have won several sporadic arguments over the years about how they ought to leave, and have hung on after all the rest of the Feanorians have had to scatter, and Maglor and Maedhros have not yet heard what's going on with the Silmarils.)
Sauron decides to have some fun with them, and disguises himself as a Maia of Namo before presenting himself to them. He claims that the continental instability they've been noticing is a prelude to a coming apocalypse, and that one of the four of them has to sacrifice themselves to prevent the end of the world.
Naturally, they don't initially believe him - less because they really think at this point that it would be beyond the pale for the Valar to require this, and more because they're not convinced any of the Valar are paying that much attention to them. But Sauron's very good at manipulation, and the earthquakes are getting worse, and the ground is cracking open in some places.
Maedhros was already a little suicidal, and tells Maglor that it should be him, that he should die/be killed just in case. Maglor is horrified and shuts the notion down. Usually, he's slightly more inclined of the two of them to trust the Valar, but not for this, not if it means sacrificing his brother. The only thing they agree on in this situation is that they need to keep the twins alive and well.
Meanwhile. Neither Elrond nor Elros wants to die, particularly since it would mean leaving the other one alone, and since they're not positive what happens to peredhil. However, they a) don't want either of their adoptive fathers to die, for the normal reasons and also in case they would go to the Void/not be reembodied, and b) are mostly sure that they can sing their way out of Mandos as Luthien did. So with that logic, they're starting to look like the best options if someone has to be sacrificed.
Maedhros and Maglor overhear them discussing this, and realize the situation might get more urgent. They hide all possible means of death-dealing about the place. Maedhros reiterates that it should be him, that Maglor is less broken and the one the twins are closer to. Maglor tells him not to be an idiot and that the twins love both of them, and that his lesser brokenness might make him better able to handle the Void if it comes down to that.
And of course, in between the assorted arguments, Sauron's coming around to each of them and stirring things up with a stick, alternately convincing them that they should be the one to die or that they can't be. Any way that it goes is fine by him: if it's Maedhros, Sauron will have finally destroyed his old victim; if it's Maglor, Maedhros will be so tormented with grief and guilt that he might die anyway; and if it's one of the twins, that might be what finally drives a wedge between Maedhros and Maglor.
A lava chasm opens up just outside the settlement. Maedhros decides to take matters into his own hand, discreetly locks Maglor and the twins in the house, and goes out to jump--
--and runs into Eonwe and others from the Host of Valinor, who are on Sauron's trail. Maedhros realizes what's been going on, and also that his brother and sons are alone with Sauron. They speed back to the house and the Host takes Sauron prisoner. While everyone is distracted with him at the camp, someone pinches the Silmarils sans murder, and the Oath is fulfilled. The Silmarils might burn Maedhros and Maglor a little, but not as badly as in canon, and Elros and Elrond are there to talk them down from doing anything drastic.
And so they all four live, and stay together. Which, ironically, would mean that Sauron accidentally made things better by showing up and messing with them...

Arvo for the ask meme hehe
Finarfin for the character ask game!
Thank you so much for asking! @thegreatstrongbow
One aspect I love about Finarfin
Different from his brothers he can admit that he’s not the best at something. I think that’s also what makes him a good king, he is able to pull himself back when necessary and assign the right people to the right tasks.
One aspect I wish more people understood about him
This is a little knit-picky but I want everyone to remember that he didn’t turn around because he saw his wife’s family get slaughtered. He turned around because he feared the doom spoken onto them. It’s not the actions that made him turn around, it’s the consequences (as you can see, I’m a strong advocate for all characters being allowed to be terrible people every now and then).
One headcanon I have about him
When he was younger, he hated his blonde hair because it made him feel like an outsider. All of this siblings have the same dark hair his father, it’s only him who has his mother’s hair. For a long time he thought that was what made everyone overlook him. He even used to cover up his hair with dark headscarves just to fit in with the rest of his family. It’s only after he notices that Indis always takes extra time to brush and braid his hair that he starts to like it. It’s his little special connection with his mother. After Finrod and Angrod are born, both with blonde hair, he adopts it as a sign of his House.
One character I love seeing him interact with
(Arvo, you interact with people?) I think just like he and his mother, he had the closest relationship with his youngest daughter Galadriel. I imagine him carrying her around everywhere, super proud and smug. He was also the first one to greet her when she finally arrived back in Valinor.
One character I wish he would interact with (more)
Maybe a little niche but Eonwe! I wanna know how they worked together during the War or Wrath, especially with Finarfin’s hidden distain for the Valar (he’s a Finwean after all) and Eonwe’s mistrust towards the line of Finwe. What conflicts did arise between them? Did they overcome them? Did they fu
One hc that involves him and one other character
So, I headcanon Finarfin to be younger than Maedhros, not by a lot but by 3-4 years! They pretty much grew up together and used to play together a lot because there weren’t many children their age around them. This is also why it pains him the most when he hears that Maedhros and Maglor had killed the guards and stolen the Silmarils. He wanted to bring back his friend to Valinor with him and welcome him back into the family (Can I write one of these without angst? No :))

In the Tinwe captured early verse, her not feeling well before the second kinslaying so her and Caranthir staying back and both of them living instead of Caranthir dying.
Oh god yes. I want Caranthir to survive so badly bc tinwe deserves good things after going through so much shit.
On the other hand, here is a little draft I wrote when I couldnt sleep a few nights back lol. Like what would happen if he did not survive for whatever reason :)
Ranyatinwë dismounted. Her mount pawned the ground and she took some steps towards the camp.
Upon her and her brothers' arrival, the guards stood at attention, hands at their weapons and ready for attack.
She gave them a bored look. "You could not even draw your sword before I have you choking on your own blood," she said icily. "Where is the white-livered coward that led you here?"
She was met with silence.
Scoffing she took a few more steps forward.
The flap of a tent opened and out walked Arafinwe and Eonwe who had been in deep discussion about how to progress from this moment henceforth.
Arafinwe stopped when he saw Ranyatinwe, armed and armoured. "What a lovely surprise," he said mildly.
She looked at him. "I would rather hear it from someone whose family was not at the forefront of saying I would not see my majority and my masteries being a waste of resources because I would walk into Lórien before long."
Her eyes fell to Eonwe. She held out a hand. "The Silmarilli, if you please."
The maia looked at her. "As known to your kin, your right to the Silmarilli is void. They shall go to the West now from whence their light came."
"I have suffered for these jewels for five hundred and seventy years at the very hands and whims of your brethren while you brought your master tea and bread. Only to then lose my twin to the svum of doriath, too. To those who kissed an ainu's feet. Your kin did this. You cannot claim innocence either. Do you sleep well knowing you could have prevented it? Or do you wonder how much you could get away with? With being Manwë's herald I wager you could take a whip to my back like Sauron has done often and none would bat an eye."
Eönwe's face twisted into one of wrath and the air around them seemed to crackle with tension.
Behind them, her horse snuffed and threw its head.
She gave the maia a bored look. "You need to look like a Valarauka to scare me. Try again, perhaps with a flaming whip. Having had to fight them for entertainment leaves you quite devoid of respect for the likes of the Ainu."
She wiggled her fingers. "The Silmarilli. I will not ask a third time, seeing as you will never give me the third Silmaril either."
Upon being met with stoic silence, she giggled. "Very well. We shall be going. Would you like the twerps' heads on one pike or on separate ones?"
That recieved a reaction.
The peredhil gasped and squeaked "what" where they were seated on their own mounts beside Maedhros and Maglor.
Several guards gripped their weapons and Eonwe's face turned more wrathful.
"You will not harm them."
Ranyatinwe giggled. "The only reason I have not killed them and finally ended the Line of the egoistic manics Lúthien and Beren is that they were counted amongst children. As of a few months ago, they are counted amongst the adults. I do not murder children, but I murder adults. You will be finding their remains somewhere."
She turned and walked back to her mount.
"No," said Eonwë.
Stopping, she looked over her shoulder. "I will be getting the Silmarilli, then," she said boredly. "My fathers stolen jewels in exchange for the stolen boys. Until then they are ours to keep and mine to kill."

You're still accepting request right? I have a complicated one here for you. I didn't know how to write this one for myself, so I'm passing the mantle on to you to write. >.< forgive me.
Reader is Maedhros wife from the years of the trees and came with the host of Finarfin for the War of Wrath and along with Eonwe and Maglor, was able to convince Maedhros to return to Valinor and accept his punishment - that way they could be together again. Years after he did his time, he was the first to leave and reunite with his wife. His wife obviously forgave him.
If it's too complicated to write it's okay, you can omit and change it up to your liking to make it easier to write. 🌻🌻

fandom tolkien- the silmarillion
a/n i loved this request so much - i couldn’t stop thinking about it
warnings angst, little spicy especially towards the end, sadness, forgiveness, small violence, arguments
You didn't know what to do— just continued staring at your husband.
His flaming red hair over his shoulders, freely flowing— standing so tall and handsome about 5 feet away from you.
His fiery blue eyes glimmered— and you realized he was holding back his tears as much as you were.
When your mother-in-law said there was someone here to meet you, you never expected it to be your husband— your long lost husband — the one that you even thought had given up on your marriage— considering the way he spoke to you last— as if dismissing you for good.
For a moment your mind replayed the day of your wedding— just before the year of the trees of Valinor— that day you thought the sun was shining its brightest.
You stood hand-in-hand— you in a shimmering white dress with sparkles of silver and gold— while he stood there as your prince charming and husband-to- be— promising each other the brightest of futures.
When completing your marriage that night— he whispered all and everything into your ears as he made love to you— sweet and tender, pulling his name from you and kissed you with the utmost passion you thought would collapse in his arms— that nothing shall come before you and it was your comfort and heart that mattered the most to him.
He promised you everything and more as he held you close, skin to skin and with your souls intertwined.
But all that and more vanished when he swore under the oath of his father— alongside his brothers and nephew.
It was like you were speaking with another ellon on the shores of Valinor as he was ready to depart with them— you begged him not to go, to stay with you.
He raised his hand — but he stopped seeing the frightened look in your eyes, he trying to cup your face but seeing you react negatively. . . deep down he knew it was only the beginning.
Maedhros sighed and left you on the shores, with his mother and Curufin’s wife.
You stayed put as instructed to do so — but during the War of Wrath you no longer cared what Maedhros had told you — you set out to fight putting yourself in as the host of Finarfin even if your kin had disagreed with you.
But you had to go. You had mainly joined to see your beloved again — to comfort and hold him for just moment and promised Nerdanel to deliver her prayers to her last two lving sons.
Silently thanking him for the years of training your Maitimo had given you, fought your way through battle — even as the fire breathing beasts joined.
You kept fighting through — with the one goal of wanting to see your husband again — you didn’t care for the wounds, ache, blood and mud on you. You kept fighting through, even when tears flowed down your face and rejoiced as Manwe’s eagles came.
When the battle was over and with the defeat of Morgoth — you tried to face your husband. But Eonwe and Maglor was already there by the time you found him.
Eonwe was right they had to summon themselves to justice for everything they had done.
You never witnessed the two brother break into a heated argument— the oath had broken apart this family more than you could ever imagine.
When Maglor had made the point of Manwe or even Varda being able to release them from the oath you had jumped to agree — that’s when Maedhros froze and it broke your heart because your beloved husband had only noticed you now.
The entire time Maedhros had kept his back to you and he tried to turn but he stopped himself — and strictly dismissed you.
“This does not concern you, Y/N.”
That was definitely not ellon you once knew — he spoke to you with a gentle and loving words and with a tone that made you float.
No — this rough edged voice. . . it shocked you.
Your Maitimo has changed — after watching his younger brothers die, take the precious lives of others and tortured under Morgoth. . . he had changed completely.
You reached for his hand — you did not care for which one — it didn’t matter to you because you had hoped at least your touch would bring back the ellon you knew before.
You looked up at him.
“Maitimo, vero, please listen to us. We can stop this now. We can be together. We do not need to take anymore lives. Please just accept your punishment and then. . . we can be together again. . .” (husband).
“Together?”
He glared down at you — then roughly yanked away the arm that was missing a limb from your hand.
“Together? And what? Have everything my brothers died for come to nothing? Everything brothers and I have done become nothing? We have done so much and been through so much, Y/N!  — And what the fuck do you want to do? Throw that all away? Do you even understand what you are asking me to do, you foolish girl?”
“Vero. . .” (husband).
His eyes twitched like a madman’s.
“If you do not understand what any of this means to me — then you shouldn’t be my wife at all!”
Maedhros suddenly raised your sword at you — almost shocking and scaring the life out of you.
Maglor had jumped in — quickly pushing you out of the way, making you trip and fall onto the ground and held back his brother.
You sobbed on the ground in seeing you have completely lost your husband to the oath.
From that day you had never stopped crying —wondering if Maedhros wanted to break off your marriage then. Then when hearing Maedhros and Maglor has stolen the silmarils — Maedhros throwing himself into a volcano with two of them and Maglor casting his into the sea you had never known.
You simply returned to Nerdanel in heartbreak and utter loss.
Living there almost like a soulless dying elleth, wondering if your marriage was over and when or if Maedhros returns, would he search for you?
Over the years — you brought yourself out less and less —only meeting Nerdanel, Curufin’s wife or Maglor’s wife unless absolutely necessary — otherwise you locked yourself away in your own world.
“Veri . . .” (Wife).
Maedhros’ voice quickly brought you back to the present.
He has taken a step closer.
“Please say something. . .”
He begged you — the whole time he watching you as shifted into your mind’s eye.
After all this time. . .
“Am I still your wife?”
You whimpered — wondering what you meant to him.
“Of course you are!”
He didn’t hesitate to answer you.
Then — he suddenly lifted you onto the table — you gasped as he did — he wanted to look into your eyes without causing strain on your neck or his neck.
He carefully and slowly cupped your face  — he had scared you so many times and it was eating him apart —he kept punishing himself for it.
While taking the oath he had broken all his promises to you.
“If you will still have me. . .”
He whispered — tears pooling his eyes when he looked into your eyes.
You noticed how he sometimes forgot how he has both hands when he tried brush away your own tears.
“. . .Because Eru knows, am not deserving of fair loving maiden like you.”
You let out a sob and placed your forehead against his forehead.
“Of course, Maitimo . . .- of course I’ll still have you. I was so . . . - so scared you wanted to break off our marriage.”
“No.”
He immediately shook his head.
“That is not what I wanted, melda. I want you. . . I want us. . .”
“Then prove it to me. . .Make love to me. . . Renew our wedding. . .”
You whispered to him.
Maedhros didn’t need to be told twice —he lips quickly smashed onto your lips, latching on and immediately lifted you, wrapping your legs around his waist.
Your husband was on you —pressing himself to you and kissing you deeply as he made his way over to your once shared chambers.
He delicately placed you on the bed as if you were fragile thing.
He pulled back to look into your eyes, still looking for permission and when you nodded he dived back in — littering kisses all over you.
Maedhros harshly pulled down your dress and his robes and took you in his arms, his hands roaming every inch of skin he could find.
Years —centuries had he waited for this and this time he planned to keep his promises to you as he pushed himself in and out of you with tenderness, marking your skin with his kisses and whispers sweet nothing in your ears.
“I love you . . .”
He whispered delicately into you ears.
“I love you too, Maitimo. . .  — but don’t you dare break my heart again!”
He chuckled, but still placed a loving kiss on your forehead and still buried deep inside you.
“I promise, veri. . .never. . . I do not plan on losing you ever again.”

Halbrand can't be Sauron, as can you even imagine Sauron being a blacksmith? He was ruler and mage, the one who made decisions and great plans, will he make a sword in a forge?
One can make great plans and have those plans involve being sneaky and forging swords. Thats what he did with the rings after all! Also the job of 'blacksmith' has pretty religious connotations in middle-earth given that A Valar and in particular Sauron's Valar is a smith. It's really not that wild.
But most importantly, the whole conceit of Saubrand is that we're seeing a Sauron who's closer in character to his repentance at the end of the war of wrath. Like this guy might as well have JUST prostrated himself before Eonwe and begged forgiveness, 'some say in earnest' or whatever the phrasing is. But in essentials Saubrand at this moment is GENUINELY trying to be good, like this isn't a plot he's hatching really, it likely IS but he's trying to make it NOT, and smithing is a part of that. He is trying to return to his old life and ways, he SWORN he would not go back! What do you know of darkness! I AM SORRY FOR YOUR BROTHER!
The fact that this will not work, and that it will be in part Galadriel's desperate need for Sauron to exist as her enemy, as the icon of all her pain, as a creature to battle against because peace feels more frightening than war, THATS!! Oh that's so juicy, I can literally taste it it's so good.

anywayy ive been thinking abt eonwe <3 what are ur general headcanons for him (if u dont mind sharing!) for me im torn between the light and bubbly blonde blue eyed 'good' maia image of him but i also really love the idea of eonwe being dark and broody. like he's the most skilled with weapons in all of arda and i lowkey imagine him being dark-eyed, dark short wavy hair and super broad and serious (and antithesis to mairon's blonde 'angelic' appearance when they were in valinor) but yeahhhhh
GOSH I've had a l o t of thoughts about eönwë hehe, love the thought of him being a bit brooding and it kinda ties into my personal hcs for him. So basically, eönwë, in my head ( and how I write him on this blog ) is:
- long, straight white hair, neatly kept, he sometimes put it in a high ponytail
- tall, a little broad but not too much
- deep brown eyes, or grey. given that maiar can change their appearance he probably alternates depending on his mood
- HUGE ! white wings, he gives me major archangel vibes
- very work orientated, takes his job very seriously, strong sense of justice. he doesn't really like blurred lines, it's either right or wrong and that's it
- seems very intimidating but really he can be a real sweetheart. he can be quite oblivious about a lot of things outside of work
- gentle with birds, just like his vala
- trains the other maiar, he's very well versed in weaponry so he takes on that stance along with teaching them different battle tactics and such
- most likely spoils the other maiar as well, so much big brother vibes, he's protective as hell over them
- most likely has named his sword and treats it with immense respect. urges others to do the same as swords should be so much more than just weapons
- surprisingly, knows how to cook, and he's great at it too
- secretly fanboys over manwë in a mentor sense, ( "that's my vala! look at him! we love him!" )
- honestly a little frightened of námo but would never say it ( apart from the time he told mairon and somehow it got to námo's attention, who then concluded he would only be harsher with eönwë as he did not inform him 😤 )
- speaking about mairon, his best friend and no one can change my mind
- does shit like sits on clouds while sharpening his sword and humming along with the birds

Recently I'm not in the mood to write fix-it fics,(& even though I know fix-it fics are not necessarily due to the authors not liking the actual ending but sometimes just an alternative, happier ending, I love the bittersweet endings of Tolkien too much to write fix-it fics. there's nothing I'd like to change about it. they’re perfect, & I'm content to think that Maglor became a myth like one of his ballads & "some can still hear his voice on the shores singing songs of regret" & Maedhros, in time (a really, really long time) began to heal in the Halls of Mandos but never got rembodied.) but if I were, they would go like this:
Scenario 1: the peredhel twins somehow realize what an utterly stupid plan the Fëanorian brothers have. They overhear it or Elrond foresees it or something. So they get themselves to the camp of Eönwë when the Fëanorians get there. The Perehel twins, as the heirs of Dior, Elwing & Eärendil claim the Silmarils as their weregild. Then they look Maglor & Maedhros in the eyes, with a look of "trust me." in their eyes. Maglor immediately accepts. But it really comes down to the lord of the House. Maedhros holds eye contact with a bit of uncertainty in his eyes for a bit longer. But eventually, he assents to it. Eönwë accepts. The twins get the Silmarils & when they're asked if now everything is good between the houses of Fëanor & Eärendil they answer: everything is perfect. In fact, I'm going to give the rocks to the Lord Celebrimbor in token of how perfect everything is now between our houses!
So, the Fëanorian brothers are released from their oath. They thank the Peredhel twins. Maglor gives Elrond his harp. The Peredhel twins tell them to now go to their mom in peace & wish them a safe journey. Elrond says that one day, he will see them again. Elros just grins and jokingly tells them that when they got to Valinor, as a sign to them that they've reached the white shores safely, burn the ships. Somehow the Fëanorian brothers know why he didn't say that he'll see them again. They've somehow known it deep in their hearts since they heard about the choice the twins were given. So their farewell to him is more final & their looks more lingering. But eventually, they say their farewells & get abroad to go to their mom in peace.
Scenario 2: they're not complete idiots. Maglor wins that final argument with Maedhros. They assent to what Eonwe said. They get to Valinor. Then, when they're about to be judged, Nerdanel steps in. She claims the Silmarils as her inheritance of her late husband. She has the right. So the brothers can shut up about their Erudamn oath. Just like the previous scenario the brothers do face judgment but their life is eternal so...(I think it would be better if they have to do social service. All of the Fëanorians are so talented & beneficial to society ... Carl Marx will haunt my dreams for the previous sentence.)
Scenario 3: Finarfin who is on the camp of Eonwe hears of his nephew's request, he also overhears them talking so reluctantly about the Silmarils as though the only thing urging them to regain them is their oath. Finarfin knows his brother's family & knows what will happen & doesn't want more bloodshed. Also, he's kind & these two eldest sons had always really looked like such kind kids & even in Beleriand, he's heard great tales of them. It was a pity to see them in such a state. Maybe it wasn't so late for their redemption. They should have been given a chance. So the next day as the King of the Noldor he claims the Silmarils as their Cultural Heritage. & Finarfin, as Fëanor's brother, is Fëanor's kin.
what is important to consider in these scenarios is that I don’t think the sons of Feanor personally wanted anything to do with the Silmarils (it’s said numerous times that they went after it with reluctance. Maglor doesn’t seem the least bit bothered when he sees the Silmaril in the sky. and the jewels took everything from them: their grandfather, their father, their brothers, their home, their mother, even the people they themselves used to be.) And what I understood from their laat conversation was that the oath was thr only thing keeping them from going back to Valinor. and also I don’t think the oath would really do anything to them had it remained unfulfilled. as I explained here in the last long-ass section of that long-ass post.
Scenario 4: well this wouldn't really be that much of a fix-it fic since it's set after the 4th age, except for that: 1. Canonically Fëanor stays in the halls of Mandos until the breaking of the world. And the other Noldor were threatened that they won't be forgiven, too. I'm not sure if Mandos will let the sons of Fëanor out of his creepy basement. 2. Maglor is never seen among people & honestly by the 4th age & with that mental condition I think it's very likely that he has faded. 3. I'm not really sure Maedhros would choose to go to the halls of Mandos.as I've explained what I think of the possibilities after his death again, here in this very long-ass post in the last long-ass bullet point. & in this fix-it fic, I'm going with the "he had a very life/death changing conversation with Elros' ghost" version (the Marvel urge to reference previous works & just expect everyone to get it.)
But anyways this scenario goes like this:
After Arwen's & Aragorn’s death, Elrond & Celebrian obviously go through a long era of depression. one day, when Celebrian comes back home from a long, helpful talk with her mother and sees Elrond sulking alone (Elwing & Earendil do all they can, of course.) she suggests that Elrond finds a way to go after Maedhros & talk to him. Elrond doesn’t usually talk to Celebrian about the Feanorians. because they killed both her paternal & maternal family. he never told her that he’d love to meet them & even though his mind told him that Maglor had faded by now, his heart still made him search for Maglor before he sailed. but Celebrian knew him well, he understood even the things he didn’t say. when Celebrian suggested it, Elrond took the chance,
He's been working under Estë in Lorien since he got there & he's endeared himself to Estë. (but even if he hadn’t, Este “the gentle” was kind enough to help him.) So when he asks her for a favor, which is getting him a meeting with her husband, she grants it. She of course sings his praise for Irmo. I imagine that Irmo would already like him. Since he has the gift of foresight & he uses them for good, & translates people's prophetic dreams for them (which are probably the signs Irmo sends them.), & I imagine that he liked the Fëanorians too because they were "visionary". & I think Irmo must be very kind. So when Elrond asks him to somehow get him to have a mind-to-mind/soul-to-soul conversation with Maedhros, Irmo grants it. (He kinda asks for permission from Namo after he's done what he wanted to do & when Nienna joins him in saying that it's good for both of them, Namo gives up.)
It was just supposed to be a conversation at first. But then when he talked to Maedhros, he realized he can't let him go.
After Aragorn's & Arwen's death, Elrond is so done he doesn't even care who he has to throw hands with anymore. If there is a loved one he can still get back, then by Eru, he is going to get them back.
Maedhros doesn't want to come back. Even though he told Elrond that he had seen Elros & saw him off & they had a helpful conversation and since then he's started his healing process and is doing better, he still has a long way to go. In addition to that, he believes that he won't have a very nice reception among the Valinorians if he comes back to life, and he believes they have every right to not forgive him. & he doesn't have the right to ask for recorporation and force his presence on them. And what an awful, isolated life it will be for him among them. & even if he seems to jump at any opportunity to roast Fëanor & every time speaks to his father and or looks at him there's venom in his voice and eyes (even if he allows Fëanor to help him heal & prove himself to him again) he insists that he won't be reincarnated if Fëanor is not. His father was not worse than Morgoth & Sauron who got a second chance. His problem with his father is personal but Fëanor is still his father. & especially the Valar, who drove Fëanor to madness & Mandos who doomed all their efforts don't get to have a say in his fate. Fëanor who so far had lost the hope of ever getting back in Maedhros' good graces & thought that Maedhros had no love for him anymore is shocked in the best of ways and warmth spreads through his heart. But he asks him "but what about your mother?" & Maedhros answers that he doesn't think she'll want to see him again. To which Fëanor replies that it's nonsense. "Your mother and I didn't love you for your upstanding morals to refrain from loving you for the assumed lack of it."
But they don't want to be a Finwë to him so they don't insist anymore. But Nerdanel goes to Irmo too, and he grants her wish too, (Mandos has given up), and talks to Maedhros. And boy, did he need to see Nerdanel.
For the longest time, he just cries long-dried tears in his mother's embrace. (& I'd cram in a Fëanor/Nerdanel scene here too, cuz Fëanel 5eva)
And finally, after a while, he decides to come back for Elrond, Nerdanel, Fingon, Mahtan, and his wife(Maedhros' grandmother) (they didn't go to Mandos but when they talked to him he could hear)
He comes back.
And because Eärendil was weary with his travels, and Maedhros didn't and couldn't be among people who weren't his family (or even some of the ones who were) & the Silmarils were his responsibility, he takes Eärendil's burden and Eärendil is allowed to set foot in Middle-earth for a time and come back to Valinor. He travels all around Middle-earth. Sees the land of his descendants and meets his great-grandkids. Then he thinks about Elrond and how much he loved his foster father and how much he has lost and the pure joy on his face when Maedhros got reincarnated after the lengths Elrond went to to get him back. And how if it wouldn't have been for Elrond's efforts in getting Maedhros back, Earendil wouldn't have been free now. And after all, Maglor raised his son and gave him the love he couldn't give-even if Maglor was the reason Eärendil couldn't give them that love. But really, Eärendil wasn't home for his sons even before that. In searching for the parents who went to the sea and left him behind, he became the parent who went to the sea & left his children behind. He could do this one nice thing for Elrond now. And Maglor had done enough penance. Eärendil knew how it felt wandering around the world trapped in your own mind away from people and weary from life.
So, after a lot of searching, he finds Maglor, and after long talks and a bit of much-needed unprofessional therapy from each other that continued in the journey to Valinor and resulted in them becoming unlikely but good friends, Eärendil ends Maglor’s catholic days and takes him to Valinor back to his family. Elwing understands.
Some places were forever empty and some wounds had left marks, but there was healing, there were other loved ones, life was volant, they were living it, days brought new wonders, new chances, and life was good.

Honestly with how the oath is written, wouldn't it also apply to those who they suspect or were implied to matching the conditions? With Elwing's age during the second kinslaying it's not like she was the one carrying the Silmaril out of Doriath.
(I’m assuming that this ask is a response to this post? Which pointed out that the text of the Oath of Feanor doesn’t call for the retrieval of the Silmarils but attacking any who come into contact with it, with Feanor and his sons vowing to pursue with vengeance and hatred to the ends of the World Vala, Demon, Elf or Man as yet unborn, or any creature, great or small, good or evil, that time should bring forth unto the end of days, whoso should hold or take or keep a Silmaril from their possession.)
I think it would absolutely apply: the Oath specifies that it’s about any creature, not just nobles with names. And lots of people, mostly unnamed and/or non-noble, die at all the Kinslayings. In the Third Kinslaying, it’s notably Elwing and the people of Sirion who refuse/demur to answer/ask for more time when the Feanorians send their demand, not just Elwing alone, so the people of Sirion are just as much a target.
However, I don’t think the Oath is actually supernaturally compulsive and that it’s less the text and more what the Feanorians think it means that guides their actions? I do think there’s a case to be made that at least some of the Feanorians think the Oath does call for retrieving the Silmarils, what with all the multiple requests Maedhros & living brothers send people asking them to yield the Silmaril(s), but even there, looking at the conversation Maedhros and Maglor have before they steal the Silmarils from Eonwe’s camp, it’s clearly more than just retrieving those Silmarils.
But imo the interesting takeaway isn’t what the Oath demands the Feanorians do, whether or not it is compulsive, but that they swore it in the first place.
